Using music in Final Cut Express

I loaded music into iTunes. It's music written and performed by my friend. I'm editing a video for him.
In the old iTunes you could convert any song to an MP3 version. They you could import and use the song in Final Cut Express with no problem. Now I don't see that option. It's either not there on one of my iMacs or it's grayed out in another.
How can convert my songs to that I can edit and use music.

Ideally, you should use should use the original file instead of MP3/AAC.
And you don't use MP3 in Final Cut Express.
See this -> Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express: Convert MP3 and AAC audio files for compatibility before importing

  • Are we able to use music from final cut library on videos and upload on Facebook

Are we able to use final Cut pro music on Facebook and youtube?

All of the audio library content that comes with Apple Pro Apps (includes FCPX and Logic) are NOT copyright free.  Most of the audio is copyright by Apple, Inc. A good deal of the content is copyright by third parties like Detroit Chop Shop, Sound Ideas and various individuals.
ALL of the content is Royalty Free (there's a big fat hairy difference!!!)
You have licensed permission to use ALL the Apple Audio Library Content, for personal and commercial use *without* having to pay for that use in royalties.  (You've already done that — it's part of the cost of your software.) You cannot sell/resell the content; you cannot "cause the content" to be freely accessible to others (to my mind: this means that you may not use the content without alteration, without addition, or without "spoiling" a pristine copy of the audio [for example, with voiceovers].)  The license specifically states that you can use all of the clips to create your own compositions and/or original soundtracts (which heavily implies not using any specific clips as a "standalone" that can be potentially downloaded/copied.) [Logic Pro 9 and MainStage 2: Using royalty-free loops in commercial work - Apple Support]
You SHOULD provide credit for the audio you use within the video you create (especially for YouTube.)  When you go to select audio in FCPX, the copyright owner is clearly listed with the audio clip. To simplify your credits you could possibly get away with something like: Music/Sound Effects provided by Apple, Inc. If you specify "copyright", then get the owners right.
Apple audio content has been around for YEARS (Jam Packs).... Most of it has been used and reused by thousands of people on YouTube and with their content matching algorithms, your video is quite likely to be flagged for copyright violation. I know for a fact that if the audio is properly credited, you are not likely to receive copyright infringement notices (I'm 99.99% sure a human puts eyes on every video to make sure credit is given when there might be an issue — YouTube has to protect itself first.)  If you do receive a copyright "hit" and you've properly credited the source(s), then you have a leg to stand on for an appeal. YouTube knows about the licensing agreements that accompany Apple Pro Software. Be professional. Credit!
PS - once you've given proper credit to others who have contributed to your video, copyright the video (*your work*) to yourself...

  • Up loading music into final cut express

Hello, I'm new to FCE and have found that I can't use music that I have bought from Itunes in my projects. I have read that there is free program called "hear you music anywhere" that will allow this to work. I have googled this but just get sent around in circles. Is this program still around? If not what are the other options? Also, when I do try to import an itunes song, FCE will freeze my computer.

What's the difference between buying a cd and loading it onto your computer, or buying one song from Itunes?
When you buy a a song from the iTunes Music Store or a CD from any store, you're only paying for the right to listen to that music. Period.
When you want to use a song in a film, video, radio spot, etc, you must negotiate 'synchronization rights' from the copyright holder. If you want to reproduce the song (by itself or in a video, film, etc), you must negotiate 'mechanical rights' from the copy right holder. If you want to perform the song in a publicly accessed venue, you must have 'performance rights' from BMI, SESAC or ASCAP.
Bottom line, you did NOT buy the song, you merely bought the right to listen to it at your convenience.
Like it or not, that's the law.
But wait, it gets even better. When Apple wanted to start selling music online at $.99 a pop, the only way it would be allowed is if DRM metadata was embedded in the music files. So Apple, wanting to sell the songs online agreed to do so. And that's why the songs you buy from iTunes have DRM and the ones on the CD don't. All clear?

  • Importing music into Final Cut Express?

Got "file error/unknown file" message after trying to import music into FCE. The music source are tapes I digitized using Garage Band and are now saved in my "music" folder as mpeg-4 (m4a). What to do? Do I need to re-digitize the tapes to a different file type? Do I need to convert the files? Or is there a way to import that I am missing? (I tried "import / files" and I also tried just dragging the files into the project window. The music plays fine in itunes and are individual files.
ADDED:  I now notice that when I try to "import / files" all my other audio does show up correctly when I click to "sound files" except from the music I digitized from the tapes. So, perhaps when I digitized them, I saved them as wrong film format??

We can't say as this is against the terms of ASC use.

It is against the user's agreement for the iTunes Music Store (as well as against copyright law) to use copyrighted works in your video without proper licensing.

  • Using iPhoto with Final Cut Express

Most of my FCE projects point to photos within my iPhoto Library. I currently have an older project which I wish to update but the iPhoto application and library for that project is an older PPC application, prior to the iPhoto switch from Finder folders to a Package for containing photos.
If I open the older iPhoto library using a more recent iPhoto application, it is going to convert it to the new format. The problem is that the photos will be rearranged into a different “folder” structure and I assume that FCE will no longer be pointing to the photos and they will all go off-line. My thinking is that reconnecting the media will be a nightmare (it is a very large project).
Is there a way to reconnect the photos somewhat automatically?

    Hi isurvived815 -
In a nutshell the speed is down to several things. Processor speed, amount of RAM, Hard Disk speed and graphics card. The answer depends on what you can afford and what screen size you need to work with. These are the more logical questions you need to ask yourself.
You may find that editing movies and photographs would be better on a bigger screen. If so go for the 24inch. If cash is tight then go for the higher end 20inch as lenn5 suggests. I bought the top of the range model after considering the same questions. I work in Adobe CS3 applications such as Photoshop so a 24inch screen was important. I wanted the machine to last several years so went for the fastest that was available at the time. I also bought the maximum 4Gig RAM which I installed myself as Apple charges ridiculous prices for RAM and it's so easy to install.
You need to ask yourself these questions in a logical way and you'll reach your own conclusions.

  • PowerPoint Like Presentation Using LiveType for Final Cut Express

In LiveType, would it be a good way to present bulleted text like in PowerPoint?
Any suggestions as to how to make text appear one point at a time?

Help again. I thought I would be able to easily go into LiveType to figure it out. I am wanting the text to appear without background (transparent slide with text) on the right part of my FCExpress video and make it appear by points like in a powerpoint. This sounds easy but I am obviously missing something. Instead of the text being like a column, it is a sentence in a long straight line. How do I make it like in a half screen text column?

  • Can I sell Final Cut Express HD used?

    Hey Guys,
I have a quick question. Can I sell a used copy of Final Cut Express HD 3.5? The reason I am asking is because I know Microsoft is stingy on license keys etc. Can anybody clear up my confusion on how I can sell this used and the other person be able to use the software? Thanks.

Here's a link to a post on another forum detailing what I did to transfer the licenses.

  • Photoshop CS3 and Final Cut Express

I am having some issues trying to bring a .psd file into FCE as a sequence. Every book/site/thread that I read says that as a program default FCE will import .psd files as layered sequences; however, when I save the file and try to import it it comes in as a clip with no layer functionality. I have tried .psds with "Maximize Compatability" on and off, layered tiffs, .psd 2.0 and nothing has given me the layers I am looking for. Any thoughts?
    Using:
MacBook with Final Cut Express 3.5.1
Dell Precision with Photoshop CS3 Extended

Item number one looks very helpful... annoying but helpful.
I'll have to see what I can do to work around this. And Macs usually play so nicely with others...
    Thanks, I'll let you know.

  • Sorry, one more time, Final Cut Express

I know there are several threads about this program running on intel, but I couldn't find a specific answer to my question in any of them.
I just ordered a MB and plan on using the universal Final Cut Express 3.5. Now, I have an eMac, where I had originally started with FCE 1.0, then bought an upgrade to FCE 2.0, which is what I currently use.
My question is, when my new MB shows up, will I be able to install FCE 1.0, the 2.0 upgrade, then the FCE 3.5 upgrade and have everything work okay? Or will I need to, because of intel, just buy the universal FCE 3.5 (and spend an extra $200)?
Thanks so much for any help! -Reed

I would call Apple and ask them. I would be highly surprised if the version 3.5 upgrade would require a prior installation to be present, especially given the Intel transistion, although I would call to confirm.

  • After hiding Final Cut Express it won't return

After I use the "Hide Final Cut Express" option on the menu bar it wont return when I click on it. All other apps. do but not FCE. I have to force quit the app. This just started happening a few days ago.

Yes, tried both - nothing. It used to work until last week. I haven't upgraded anything or changed anything. There is a little triangle under the icon meaning it's active but once I hide the app. it's all over. Have to force quit and start again.

  • How do I render in Final Cut Express?

I installed Final Cut Express 4 yesterday.  I cannot render anything! When I try to render it says "Warning: Insufficient disk space for render. Please free up space and retry."  I have deleted preferences and it still will not render.  I have also made room by deleting files but it still will not work! What do I do?

    Hi
There are some major differences in how video-editing programs works.
Just to Start and get on with FinalCut is one of them. It doesn't store and keep material as iMovie any version.

  • Does Final Cut Express Work with Canon XF300 or Kodak Zi8?

Question... I JUST purchased Final Cut Express 4. Ihave a Cannon XF 300 and I have the XF plugin software but it doesn't to appear to have worked.
I used the same software at work..except work computers use Final Cut Pro and it works beautifilly... How did you get your Copy of Express to recognize your MXF files... or any files that came from your Canon XF for that matter?
While I'm on that note.. i alternatively use a Kodak Zi8 HD for vlogging and Final Cut tells me it can't recognize the files... ***?!? They're MOV files!  Isn't that a native to apple format?
Feels like I ****** away almost 200 dollars..

The Zi8 records to .mov files but uses an H.264 codec.   A QuickTime .mov file can be created using any one of a long list of audio and video codecs.  Just because it's a .mov file doesn't mean it's compatible with any & every app.
The XF300 records to MPEG-2 Log GOP
Neither can be used directly in Final Cut Express
Both will need to be converted to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec.   I suggest using MPEG Streamclip to convert your raw video to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec in order to edit in FCE.  MPEG Streamclip is free; but you will also need the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Component if you do not already have it on your Mac.  ($19 from the Apple Online Store)
An alternative would be to Log/Transfer using Final Cut Pro into QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec.  Then transfer the files to your Mac that has Final Cut Express.

  • Shake vs final cut express

    Hi all,
Is shake a comparable program to final cut express?? I just bought an apple iMac and I'm trying to decide what program to use for all my family video. It sounds like shake is a nice program. Is it made by Apple or did they sell it? If I wanted to not use iMove 08/09 because of quality issues, is Shake a viable program to use such as Final cut express?
    Thanks much

Shake and FCE are completely different applications.
Shake is designed for compositing (think of it as Photoshop for video) and does not have editing functionality. It also has a rather steep learning curve.
I would recommend FCE for what you wish to do.
