Using my 17" flat screen for a TV.

I have cable TV and a cable modem for my DSL. I run the cable TV directly to my VCR and use that as the tuner to change channels. I can run the audio from the VCR through my stereo system so don't need the TV for sound. And the sound is so much better than way.
I'm wondering if there is a way for my to use my 17" flat screen monitor from my G4 tower as a TV. I don't use the desktop much. When I upgrade I'm thinking of just getting a new MacBookPro and a Timecapsule and doing away with the desktop. I'd like to repurpose the monitor as a TV.
Is there anything extra I'd need to do this? Would I need an Apple TV or a TV tuner?

I would imagine the only way you would be able to do this would be via an external USB/Firewire Video device that will allow video in connections to your MBP.

Screen sharing setup in 10.5, 10.6 are described by the links by operating system.  10.7 is fairly similar to 10.6.
And if both Macs have Firewire, you can setup a Firewire over IP network for fast communication between machines.  Note if you have two different Firewire ports a 6 pin to 9 pin Firewire cable does exist.  There are no Firewire to USB cables.

I´d like to hook up another computer to the 24" iMac. I know there´s no hardware way since it´s integrated but maybe by using some magic box over usb or something and a bit of software?
I´m looking to use it under Windows running Bootcamp.

  • Use iMac 21" as screen for Vista PC

    Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a new iMac 21" all in one unit. However I still have my Vista machine, and would prefer to keep both machines going.
Is there a way where I can use the iMac screen for the Vista machine. I know I will most likely need to purchase a new video card or something for the vista machine to do this, but I would like to know is it possible. If so, what do I need???
On a side note, I really don't think this is possible, however if I was to connect the vista machine to the iMac either via ethernet or router could I have a speedy way of complete control, therefore removing the need for 2 keyboards and 2 mice on the desk.
I have a fairly small house so space is limited hence why I would prefer not to buy some huge desk so both machine can fit on it.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks Stefan,
Forgive me for being a complete noob here....
So the best way for me to achieve what I am wanting to do is to connect the two machines via my router (faster then wireless for me) then run a VPN plus some type of remote control program (i am assuming that is a VNC?).
VPN http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vpn would only be needed if you use the internet to connect the two machines for the sake of security.
VNC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vnc would suffice if you can connect the two machines through your own home router.
The machine that you want to control remotely has to run a VNC Server, whereas the machine that controls the other runs a VNC client.
OSX has the needed software already included. It's called Screen Sharing.
Have a look at the OSX help for it.
On the Windows machine you would need a VNC Server program.
UltraVNC or TightVNC are free open source programs for that.
I have seen programs like VMware Fusion? would this be any good?
Fusion is a completely different app.
It enables an Intel-based Mac to run Windows (or other operating systems) alongside OSX by providing a 'virtualized' environment in which Windows is installed and runs.
It removes the neccessity to have a second Windows computer.

  • Qosmio G30-102 - Can I use it as HD screen for my PS3?

    Hi
I've got a Qosmio G30-102 and I wanted to know would it be possible to connect up my Playstation 3 via *HDMI*??? At the moment I can only use the AV cables which is really fustrating. If i can use the laptop as the screen for my PS3 using the HDMI cable please inform me in how to do this since I have tried all methods that i can think of.
    Thanks
    Mo

    Hi!
There is no software available for this because its a hardware limitation and this cant be solved with a software.
You have to understand that your notebook is equipped with a HDMI *output* port and not with an input port!! ;)
What you can do with a HDMI port? You can connect your notebook to LCD screen via this port. You will have a better picture quality as with other connection possibilites like S-Video for example.
For example I use the HDMI port of my notebook to watch movies on my LCD screen with HD quality or I watch my photos.

  • Can I use my old iMac as a second screen for my new one?

I have an old iMac (about 4-5 years) that I don't use anymore and a new iMac that I just bought a few months ago.
Can I us my old iMac as a second display for my new one? Its a slow computer now, but the screen is nice and big so it would be nice to be able to keep using it like that.
If yes, what cord(s) would I need to make this happen?
If no, is there any disadvantage to using a non-mac screen for a second display? (I'm a graphic designer, so little things like having the color exact on each screen are very important)
    Thanks for the help!

Is there any way to do it without lag? Right now it works, but its really annoying to have things so slow on the other screen.
Is there any way to hook them up so they work like an actual dual monitor setup (wired connection with no lag)?

  • Using Server X as a screen for inside network?

I searched for information on this and wasn't able to turn up anything useful, but it's possible I missed it, so pardon me if I'm bringing something up that's already discussed at length and just point me in the right direction.
I'm managing a small network that operates a radio station's automation software. It is the desire of the managers to keep this system isolated to keep it from coming under attack and to keep the music from getting stolen. (the automation computers and servers are PC WXP) However, I need to have some access to certain things on the outside, and I'm having trouble figuring out how to make that work. At this point, I have two requirements:
    1. FTP Server that is accessable from the outside, and from the inside without exposing the inside to the outside.
    2. Access to an online database (for song info, titles, etc, basically like CDDB), again without exposing the inside computers to the outside.
My idea is to set up a mac with OSX Server on it with two NIC and have it run the ftp server. Then to use it as a "screen" for accessing the music database, like a proxy server or something.
I hope what I'm getting at is clear here.
Any ideas, suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

VPN on the really simple side is a key system to a locked door. That door being the firewall. What is on the other side? Your whole network as if you where plugged in right next to your PC's except for LAN speed you get WAN speed, lol.
Now on the surface that may sound dangerous but VPN's provide a very secure way to get access to your network of PC's behind the firewall. On some firewalls they can be a bit tricky to setup but nowadays firewalls have it so a kid can set it up.
On the firewall you set the Virtually Private Network (VPN) up and you will in the process generate a "key". You then use this key w/software or OS add-on that will allow you from your home PC to get to the firewall and see the other side. Then you can connect to any local PC in the office that is setup to let you.
Hope that clears it up for you.
BTW, If at some later date you where planning on doing web-hosting for the office, e-mail hosting, database shares, Calendar collaboration, or any other type of server related thinks I would say get OS X Server cause it can do just about everything.

  • How can I enter "Flate rates for travel costs" with more than 2 decimals?

    Hi expert,
I want to enter flat rates for travel costs in table T706F.
I have a figure with more than 2 decimals (0,066), but I cannot save it, because only 2 decimals are allowed for EUR.
I don't want to change the decimals for this currency.
I found OSS note 446116 which is release independent. It is a note of 30.10.2001.
It suggests to create a new currency e.g. EUR3 and enter translation ratio's and exchange rates.
    This seems pretty drastic.
Do you know if there is another way to handle this issue?
    Thank you.
    Kind regards,
    Linda Verding

    Hello Christian,
I have checked it with consultants from SAP Brussels.
They confirm that OSS note 446116 can be used to create flat rates for travel costs with more than 2 decimals.
I will create a new currency (EUR3) with the description "for travel expenses only".
    Kind regards,

Scenario: We use a tabbed selection screen for an ALV report. We create a variant, make a selection field on the second tab mandatory & save it without a value. Having problems connecting iMac(late 2006) running 10.7.5 to a Samsung Flat Screen TV using separate audio/speaker cable and HDMI standard cable, mini-DVI to HDMI video converter.  TV displays generic Apple galaxy background and "some" windows (e.g. screen resolution choices).   It does not show Mail or Safari menus.  System preferences'  display "gathered" the Samsung and chose its resolution.  I did not find a way to select the Samsung as my display.
In addition to having old hardware, we have Verizon FIOS providing internet and TV access.  Is there any way to make this work for us?  We would like to stream video (Netflix) and view shows from the Web.  Do we need Apple TV to do this?  Or is it not possible with our old iMac?  My husband thinks that our Airport could be a factor.
    Thank you

Lately, I have been seeing a lot of posts with users trying to use their Macs/iMacs to mirror their streaming video from their Macs to an HDTV.
There are, actually, many alternatives to choose from than just from a Mac.
You need to have or invest in a WiFi capable router for all of these examples.
Apple TV only integrates with WiFi and newer Mac hardware. So, if you want to have total integrated experience, if you have a 2011 Mac or newer, you might as well pay the $100 for the AppleTV box.
If you have a older Mac, like I have noticed many users do, then you have other options.
If you want to elimate long cable clutter and having your Mac at the mercy of your TV all of the time,  you can still use the AppleTV box independently or purchase cheaper alternative media streaming boxes from Roku, Sony, Boxee or any number of electronics manufacturers that now have media streaming boxes and media streaming capability built into DVD/Blu-ray players.
These eliminate long cable clutter by being close to the HDTV where shorter, less expensive cables can be used.
Another alternative for iPad users is to use an iPad with the USB/HDMI video adapter and use your iPad as the streaming box. This ties up your iPad in much the same way as it does with your Mac, but again the iPad can be close to the TV and use minimal cables to the TV.
Another alternative to is to use a combination of an iPad and your Mac to stream content that is only available to stream online from a computer. In this case, you can use a desktop remote app on your iPad and Mac. A good and cheap Desktop Remote app is Splashtop Remote. This allows you to completely connect your iPad remotely, over Wifi, to your iMac desktop. The app streams both video and sound to the iPad which is still connected to your HDTV. The resultant stream video picture will be smaller than the size of your HDTV, but it will still be plenty large enough to watch. Again, if you own a iPad and an Intel Mac, this method also allows minimal cabling to the TV.

  • Trouble loading Mac driver for Display Adapter (connecting Mac to flat screen TV)

    Howdy:
I'm trying to connect my Mac (OSX 5) to a flat screen TV.  To do so I just bought a USB 2.0 to HDMI® Display Adapter w/ Audio (1920 x 1080). The mini CD containing the DisplayLink software drivers that came with the unit won't fit in my Mac CD drive. I then tried to download the correct driver from the DisplayLink website, "DisplayLink USB Graphics Macintosh Driver" which appears to be appropriate for OSX 5 (at http://www.displaylink.com/support/mac_downloads.php). This proceeds through the installation steps, then bombs out with the error message that "The following install step failed: run preinstall script for DisplayLink software. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
In the hopes of finding a compatible driver, I looked for an earlier version of the driver on the DisplayLink site, but couldn't find one.
    Help!

Your 20" 2007 iMac has a mini-dvi video out.  Forget about using usb and installing drivers and just use a mini-dvi to HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable instead.
    Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter
Then connect your audio line out (headphone) to your TV's audio in and you should be set to go.

  • Newest verison of FCP for pre-Intel G5? Flat-screen TV as monitor?

I have a pre-Intel G5 and I'd like to upgrade my FCP Suite. Which version is the "highest" I can use on my computer? I'm pretty sure the newest version is built around the Intel chips and will work slowly on my computer, so I want to get the version that will be best on my system. I'm producing a feature film (shot on 24p SD with a Panasonic AG-DVX100b) and although things are working now (I currently have FCP HD 4.5), I'd like the added bells and whistles of a newer version.
I'd also like to add a TV/monitor to my system because the video appears much darker on my monitors than on a regular TV (even after I calibrated them for video using a Huey Pro color calibrator). I currently have the captured video feeding from my computer through a cheap mini-DV camera via Firewire and then to the TV via RCA cables, which works sporadically, and I also have a SONY DVMC-DA2 analog-to-digital (and vice versa) converter box that works, again, sporadically. Is there a better way to set this up (I probably need to buy an editing deck), and has anyone had any luck (or would anyone advise) using a new 720p flat screen as a TV/monitor?
I have some other questions, but I'll ask those later. I appreciate any comments anyone might have.
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

FCS2 (aka FCP 6) is the last version for PPC machines.
If you are editing DV, keep your existing TV. Playing it back on an HDTV is not the way to go.
Use something like the Matrox MXO to feed the TV.
