Using my BT Infinity Broadband with Ethernet conne...

Hi there,
I am downgrading from BT Infinity to "simple" connection due to moving homes. Can I use my Infinity modem to connect via the socket as I realized that the cable doesn't fit in to the socket. Do I have to buy a LAN cabel and connect it to the port or do I have to get a new modem?
Many thanks fro helping,
Llewellyn

john46
if you had infinity then you must have the vdsl filtered socket and surely all you need to do is take the rj11 cable which connected to existing modem and connect to adsl socket on back of hub - no other filters required - or am I missing something?

  • Can't use my TC as bridge with ethernet

    Hi all --
Here's my set-up : I use my ISP box as wifi router. I added my Time Capsule wirelessly to the existing network.
Wireless network works fine : I can access Internet and the TC drive.
Here's the problem : I'd like to connect a PC via ethernet to the TC in order to access the web (the PC doesn't have wifi). I get no connexion...
I tried to connect my Macbook to the TC with ethernet and got the same result.
Here are some bits of info : the TC gets its ip address (192.168.1.21) via dhcp from my adsl box, BUT both the PC and the mac get a different IP address (i.e. 194.169.x.x) when connected to the TC via ethernet. Could it be that the TC is assigning ip addresses even though it's designated to act as a bridge ?
I am at loss. Thanks for any help.

on the summary screen, I have "wireless mode : join a wireless network" (may not be the exact wording since I'm on a foreign system), and the IP Adress is 192.168.1.21.
Again, the TC is NOT connected to the ISP box via ethernet but Wifi.
On the Internet tab, I have :
    - connect via : wireless network
    - configure IPv4 : via DHCP
    - IP Address : 192.168.1.21
    - subnet : 255.255.255.0
    - router : 192.168.1.1
    - DNS server : 192.168.1.1
    - Connexion sharing : off - bridge mode.
    Hope it helps...

  • How to use AE for wireless printing with Ethernet Printer?

    Hi all,
I have been using my AE connected to a printer via USB for printing but have now replaced my printer with another model that only has Ethernet connections.
Can someone please explain how to set up the AE so that I can print? I can get so far but seem to be doing something wrong somewhere. Here's my setup:
Mix of Macs and PC's using Airport Time Capsule for wireless network. Currently setup as 'Create a Wireless Network'
1 x b/g Airport Express - now with Ethernet connection between AE and Printer. Currently connected as 'Join a Wireless Network'
Via 'Add Printer' I have selected 'Internet Printing Protocol - IPP' as the Protocol and added the IP address of the Airport Express '10.0.1.10' as the Address. This seems to connect OK but all I get is printer paused.
Any idea where I am going wrong please?
    Many thanks, Mike

    Sorry you are having difficulties.
Suggest that you first get the printer working with your AirPort Extreme in case the configuration on the Express may not be quite right.
I'm not familiar with the Epson products, but I do use an HP ethernet all-in-one device.
The basic "must do's" on the device include entering the printers MAC address and assigning a fixed IP address that the printer will always will receive using a DHCP Reservation on the AirPort Extreme. My all-in-one gets 10.0.1.25 It sounds like you may have done this.
After installing the printer software from the disc, you go into the Mac's System Preferencesj > Print and Fax and click the small + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list. The HP printer appeared immediately as an available printer, so click it to highlight it and then click Add at the lower right. It's been flawless since it was installed about 3 months ago.
You'll need to Add the device for each Mac computer on the network. I don't use PC's but imagine that Add Printer or Add New Device would be the way to go here.
Sometimes it helps to call the manufacturer and endure the hold for 15-20 minutes waiting for the manufacturer's tech support people.

Yes, it is one of the things AirPort Express was specifically designed for.

  • How can I use my time capsule with Ethernet cable? How is it also possible to use time capsule as a normal external hard drive?

My problem is that I don't know how to use my Time Capsule with Ethernet Cable, as when I use wireless it is really slow.

Make sure that there is an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on your modem/wireless router to the WAN port on the Time Capsule
Click on the Wireless tab at the top of the page
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to Off (I assume that you do not want the Time Capsule to provide a wireless network since you already have a wireless network)
Next, click the Internet icon at the top of the screen, then click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click the Update button at the bottom and wait 30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart and display a green light
Then, you must power off your entire network...all devices....in any order that you want
    Wait a minute
Start your modem/router first and let it run a minute
Start the Time Capsule and let it run a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time until everything is powered up
If you are using Time Machine for backups, you will need to reset the connection because you have changed the way in which the Time Capsule connects to your network
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Open Time Machine
    Click Select Disk
Click the Time Capsule to highlight it
Click Use for Backup or, it might be Use Disk
Now you can connect your Mac using an Ethernet cable to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to back up using Ethernet. Be sure to turn off the wireless on your Mac before you start the backup.
If you want to backup using wireless, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the Time Capsule and turn on the wireless and connect to your wireless network. Your computer will now backup using wireless.

  • How can I use firefox with pro con latte extention on a linux OS that runs via a USB?

    What linux distro to use?
What version of firefox to use? (Since it has to be compatible with pro con latte)

Firefox tarballs from Mozilla Org use prefs within Firefox for updates. The "toggle" for not automatically updating - '''app.update.enabled''' and where to look for updates - '''app.update.url'''. The first needs to be '''''false''''' and the second could be a '''''null''''' string, do an update can't be found.
''I use both prefs to keep Firefox from updating by itself. I install each new version of Firefox as it is released, and keep the older versions around for reference purposes. Those prefs are the same since Firefox 1.5 came out.''
The versions of Firefox that are part of an operating system installation usually are that OS's own build of Firefox, and don't use the same update setup as Mozilla uses, in most cases. I am not familiar with Cent OS, but Ubuntu and Debian look for Firefox updates and from their own program repository servers outside of Firefox - as with the tarballs from Mozilla.

  • Help with Ethernet broadband please

Forgive me for asking what are probably simple questions - but I am having trouble with Ethernet broadband and I cant find answers anywhere ( including from my ISP ) . Thanks in advance for any help here !
I have a blue and white 700 MHZ g3 imac running OSX 10.2.8 and OS 9.2 . I recently had Ethernet broadband hooked up - it connects to the net for a couple minutes , then wont receive for hours, then works for an hour, then not, etc. The ISP says that the D-Link router they installed is getting a continously strong signal - that they cant see anything wrong from thier end . The guys who installed the receiver thing-ey on the outside of my house also configured the Ethernet setup . Should I re-set up all that ? What do I need to know from the ISP to do that ? Do I have to boot up in OS9 and set up the Ethernet there also ?
I dont have an Airport card but that shoul;dnt matter right ? I only have the one computer .

Please post in the CRT iMac discussions. Thank you.

  • Can I use the Ethernet Port for a computer when it is also used as a wireless network with an Airport Extreme as the access point for the wireless network

Can I use the Ethernet Port  of the A1264 Airport Express to connect to the Ethernet port of a computer that does not have wireless capability when the Airport Express is also used on a wireless network with an Airport Extreme 5th generation as the access point for the network?
    I have AE 5th gen
looking to buy (from ebay) the AEX A1264
Various computers, printers and hubs for the network
    Is this possible to do?

Bob, Thanks for the info. I have read different articles that said yes, but I wanted to make sure before I commit to buy. I have an older A1084 which I could not use the Ethernet port. I know at one point I was able to when I was on 10.4. Now that I am on an Intel processor and 10.8 I am going to have to upgrade some of my Apple wireless hardware.
    Thanks Again.

  • Has anyone used Ethernet Gateway and LabVIEW, communicating with Ethernet/IP protocol ?

I have a PLC system (Jokab Safety B20)  together with Ethernet Gateway (also Jokab Safety type E1).
What I want to do is to communicate with this unit using LabVIEW Ethernet/IP.
Read a couple of data and write a couple.
Has anyone anything like this with LabVIEW and Ethernet/IP ?
I'm completely new to using PLC's, but I have made a minimum PLC application, but can't get communication to work with LabVIEW (+ Ethernet/IP).

i generally use an OPC server to talk to he PLC and then use Datasocket to talk to the OPC server tags.
if that gaetway thing is an OPC server then you maybe abel to do data socket R/W via it.
Otherwise the NI OPC server may support that widget and (at the rate I bill out) is a good deal in the eyes of most of my customers.

Since the MacBook Pro currently works, you should put it next to the iMac and compare the network settings for AirPort in System Preferences Network pane Advanced. Also, if you want to start off with the default network settings, you can use Location drop down menu and select +Edit Locations+. Then click the plus sign to create a new location. Set up that new location.
On System Preferences Network pane, AirPort should appear at the top of the list (in the sidebar). To change the service order, click on the gear icon and select +Set Service Order+.
Some additional tests you can try, on top of seeing if it works with (1) WEP security disabled and (2) a direct wired connection to the router.
If you get it to work with either (1) or (2), be sure to run Software Update at least two times to apply any recent updates from Apple. See if that makes any difference to using AirPort with WEP back on.
    (3) Start up in Safe Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
I don't know if any third-party software has been installed on the iMac at this point, but Safe Mode will start up with only the essential Apple extensions and processes running. See if it works any better in Safe Mode.
    (4) Create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. Try connecting with AirPort in the new account.
    (5) Connect the MacBook Pro to the router with a wired Ethernet connection. Make sure its Internet access works. On System Preferences Sharing pane, set it up for +Internet Sharing+ so that it is set to +Share your connection from Ethernet - To computers using AirPort+. On the iMac, try to connect to that wireless network and access the Internet.
That last one (5) may be a good one to try first. It would at least show that the iMac's AirPort is working - you can even set it up to use WEP. If you have any questions about using the +Internal Sharing+ feature, please ask.

  • BT Infinity Broadband - stay away. Extremely poor...

Just switched to BT Infinity broadband. Unfortunately, I took the limited option as we do not download a lot but wanted the faster speeds. A big mistake. Regret going to BT. Issues that we have faced so far:
    1) Installation could not be done on the first day the engineer turned up. After sending an email and text every day for a week prior to the engineers visit to make sure that we had things ready it turned out that BT did not have their house in order and couldn't install it on the day. They had issued a notice to my previous broadband provider to disconnect, so ended up without internet for a week. BT provided a BT wifi-voucher but that was a world of pain as well with expiring vouchers, dropped connections, etc.
    2) Once the broadband was installed, we stopped getting signal in parts of the house. Never had a problem with my sky router. Called BT only to be told that we should go wired. Wifi has a limited range. I would like to think that my house is massive and wifi doesn't reach all places but unfortunately not. With the previous sky router, we would get wifi 3 houses away. Now - not even within the house. Tried to play around with channels but no luck. Finally ended by buying an extender!
    3) Usage cap: We used up 70% of our monthly limit in 2 days without downloading any movie, any video. Just normal browsing. Called BT and they said that they can't provide details of usage. If it says 70% then it is 70%. If it crosses the 40GB limit, then we have to pay £5/5GB. At this rate, potentially looking at a bill of about £200/month for normal browsing. This can't be right!!
    4) Tried to upgrade to unlimited only to find out that it means taking out a new 18 month contract without any offers. I had signed up to BT Infinity 1 with a 12 month contract at £15/month (£3 off regular price). If I switch to any one of the unlimited packages, then the £3 discount will not be available and it will have to be a fresh 18 month contract. HOW ABSURD! Never had that problem with any other provider. They always had an option to upgrade to a higher package for the remainder of the contract.
Over the last month, I have spent over 12 hours on the phone to BT, have spoken to at least 10 different departments and still an unhappy customer. So regret going to BT. Counting the days when the contract will end and I can move away. Only 352 days more to go.
    Regards
    Aneesh

    Hi there
    Welcome to the forum.
Sorry to hear you have had issues.
Just a few comments for you.
Point 2 - With the WiFi - is the new BT Hub in the same location as your old Sky router? If not, then even minor changes to the location can cause different behaviour due to signal variations.
Also, you could consider using your Sky router as a WiFi access point. I did that with my old Netgear router. Connected it via ethernet, diisabled the DHCP, gave it a new ip address and set it to just allow passthrough. Worked a treat.
Point 3 - Usage cap: You need to remember that *any* connection like web browsing, emails, streaming etc will generate data traffic which will be recored as usage.
Not sure if you signed up for "BT WiFi with Fon" but this will use a portion of your connection to allow people to use your WiFi.
I do not know if this is actually recorded against your usage, but I am sure other Forum users will be able to tell us.

  • I used to get infinity but now can't?

    Hey,
I've recently moved house and reluctantly said good bye to really fast and reliable net from virgin. However, before moving I checked to ensure I would be able to get at least some kind of fast internet. And yes I was, I could get upto 76mbps from bt infinity. Which is fine, before we went through with the offer on he house I asked the occupants what internet they had, and they said bt infinity and upto 76mbps. So great I thought, I can get decent internet.
I should probably say at this point that my wife requires a good internet connection for work and I love streaming films and gaming etc. so fast internet is important to us.
So I ordered my bt infinity to be installed the day after I moved in... 5th of April. An engineer was arranged to come out and set it all up for us. The 5th came and went, so I checked my online status, apparently I didn't need an engineer and could set it up myself. So I dully tried with no success, however before I could phone bt, they called me saying there was a technical fault at the cabinet, and it would take a couple of days to sort out. Ok fair enough.
So after a couple of days bt phoned and said they were still having problems with the line. And it would be another couple of days. Sigh... But ok.
Then I heard nothing, so phoned back and apparently my order was cancelled, so after much a do I had to reorder my infinity, for some unknown reason. And was told it would all be up and running in a couple of days. They were just performing speed tests, and then it would all be good.
So two days later still no internet nor engineer to set me up. So I phoned again, and they said "ah, there was a technical fault with their system" and it cancelled my order again! "We are working to resolve this issue in 6 days, we will get it sorted and I guarantee that it will be working at the end of that time".I was getting a bit angry now almost 2 weeks being in without internet for my wife to work! But I was assured it would be working.
So we come to today, 23rd of April. I received a missed call, a text and an email from bt asking that I contact them. So I did, and I was told that the order had been cancelled yet again. Now I was rather unhappy! And wanted to know exactly why it was getting cancelled, so they looked into it, and I have been told, that infinity is not available in my area!
Now I don't get angry very easily. But this took the biscuit, I am fuming. And demanded to know how It could not be available now, when I was told a month ago that I could get it, the previous occupants of my new house had it and many other people in the street have it.
To this they said I have been switched exchanges? ????!! And my exchange isn't fibre ready.
So I looked into that, and of course my exchange is fibre ready according to btopen reach, and not to mention my house used to have infinity.
I am at a complete loss as to what to do now? I have been offered regular broadband of 2mb, which I have not had to endure for over 14 years!
How is this possible? Does bt have a fault with their system or am I just the centre of some social experiment?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I said my wife requires decent internet for work, currently I am using my phone as a hotspot, so not ideal.
    Thanks again,
    Graeme

  • Sky Broadband with OS 8.6

Hi all, hope someone can help because I've run out of things to try!
My mum is using my old iMac G3 (333MHz) running OS 8.6. It still works fine, and she goes online via dialup. However, she's just signed up for the Sky TV deal which includes free broadband and a free router. Sky say this can't be used with any Mac OS before 10, but I insisted that it should work with 8.6 if we knew what we were doing (which I thought I did!)
Anyway, it DOESN'T work, and I suspect the cause might just be that the ethernet port on the iMac is broken (it's never been used before) but before giving up and telling her she has to either get a new computer or stick with dialup, I'm hoping to rule out all other possible causes. I've read back through this forum and spent a while googling, and although this did produce a few more things to try, none of them worked.
    Facts:
    1. The broadband connection itself is fine - my iBook works seamlessly with it, both when connected directly with ethernet cable, and when connected wirelessly.
    2. The reason I think it's a physical problem is that the light on the router which lights up when a computer is connected doesn't come on when the old iMac is connected, but it DOES come on if I connect my iBook directly. (The odd thing is that it DID come on the very first time I connected the iMac, but it hasn't since.)
    3. I've tried replacing the cable with one that I know works (and all the obvious stuff such as trying it the other way round and trying all the other ports on the router) - same result. Broadband fine with new iBook, nothing with old iMac. (And it's definitely not a crossover cable.)
    4. If I try to force the iMac to go online (to set the time etc.) it doesn't work, and the IP address that is assigned is the dreaded 169.254.xxx.yyy - this was the case after all the things I tried.
    5. Trying to go directly to 192.168.0.1 or 17.149.160.49 doesn't work either.
    6. The TCP/IP panel is set to Ethernet, Using DHCP server, everything else automatic except that "load only when needed" is unchecked. The configurations are definitely saved and active.
    7. The System Folder does have MacTCP DNR loose in it, and enabled. ObjectSupportLib is not on the computer (I used 8.6 for years and was very used to deleting it after every OS update!
There you go. If anyone has a brainwave that might be able to get my mum online, I'd be VERY grateful to hear it. Thank you very much in advance.

In an arrangement with a Router, there is no reason why Mac OS 8 and 9 should not be supported, except that ISPs do not want to train their people for it.
One possible difference is that your iBook may adapt to use either straight or cross cable, while the iMac needs the right one (straight in this case):
42717- Apple products that require an Ethernet crossover cable
Read carefully, the table is products that do NOT ever require a crossover cable, such as certain iBooks (like yours?).
The quick way to check for straight vs cross cable is to compare the color codes of the tiny wires, by peering through the \[non-clip] side of the connector. A straight cable has the same colors in the same order at each end. A cross cable has two pairs swapped with each other.
