Using my digital camera as a webcam

Hi! I have a Fuji S5000 digital camera. Straight outta the box it is capable of being used as a webcam...but only on a PC. It uses a program called PictureHello. I've heard rumors of third party developers creating programs that let MAC users use their digital cameras as webcams as well. Anyone know if there may be such a program or where I may find it? Any guidance is appreciated.
Thanx!

Dave,Welcome to Apple Discussions.
iChat in Panther allows the use of any camera with a Firewire connection. This little piece of software says it allows you to do the same with any USB camera (which I assume yours is).

P.S. MAC = Media Access Control, you are using a Mac.

  • Can I use my digital camera as a webcam?

i know my computer has built in isight but its very limited to movement and angles, i was wondering if there is any way i can use my cannon powershot a610 as webcam? thanks!

Even if the camera can take video, I don't think so. This is because the camera has been programmed to save video and pictures to the memory card. Besides, even if you could export the video being recorded, I don't think any of the iMac's applications that use iSight will recognize the camera as a webcam.
    Hope this Helps

  • How can i use a digital camera as webcam?

the iSight camera *****. I have a 12mp canon digital camera, can i use that in lieu of iSight to use in iChat and Facetime?
if so, what's the procedure? i have a macbookpro on snowleopard 10.6.8

    Hi,
The External iSight camera has a 640 X 480 pixel picture as do the early internal ones.
Later versions of the iSight camera have 1.3mp resolutions and the latest are HD.
However iChat only sends a max size or 640 X 480 picture and that is dependent on your Processor and Internet Speed. (And to some extent that of your Buddies)
Using a Stills camera was a web cam can present some problems.
It is mainly about what input the computer accepts and what the camera has as output.
I have an older Kodak DC4800
In addition to the USB Output for transferring pics it has a RCA pin type socket that output TV signals which the camera software can change between NTSC and PAL.
I then used a DV Converter to input that over FireWire to the computer.
For iChat this had to be converted to DV as it only accepts DV or certain USB web cam formats that the Mac then converts for iChat (effectively it digitizes the pic).
My camera did not take Video it just had the Ability to output what the camera saw - basically you could use a TV as a super sized Viewfinder.
If the camera you have has FireWire and it can do video then you maybe in luck  (It will still depend if the Video format is DV (not mpeg, not HDV or any other format such as AVI)
If the Video it may do can be sent of USB that will need to be USB 2.0
Again the format will need to be the type that iChat uses (or the OS software converts).
For most Stills cameras this is impossible.

  • Using Consumer Digital Camera for the Vision System

I am evaluating, if I can use a consumer digital camera for the vision system. I wanted to see if anybody out there have done that in past? The other question is, do the consumer camera manufacturers provide the driver software in order to retrive the images directly from the camera to the computer ?

I think your suggestion is right, using a firewire camera is much
straightforward. But some consumer cameras have advantages too because
of the very high resolution, especially the newer models of digital
still camera. If the cameras support PTP protocol, then I have a
LabVIEW driver for them. Check out more details at:

  • Need to use a Digital Camera remotely from the PC

Hi I need to build an app that gives the user the power to control all the settings as posible of his digital camera.
I read that I need to use TWAIN or JTWAIN but this api, uses the interface of the digital camera. For example when I want to take a picture, I select my Canon Device, and then it open the canon UI to take the photo. I don't want it. I want to build an app to control the camera with my app, no with other 3rd part soft.
So Please if someone help me, please answer this thread.
I know this app which make all the functions that I need to do in my app, but I don't know in which language is developed.
    This is the web site:
    http://www.breezesys.com/PSRemote/index.htm
Maybe I need to develop this app in another language, so If someone consider this, tell me, because I don't know how to do it.
    Sorry for my english...
Thaks a lot... I hope someone help me...

You can download a fully functional version of Lightroom 2.3 from the links I show below. Once installed, you can use it for 30 days without a serial number, but after that you will need to purchase it otherwise it will stop functioning.
    Windows downlaod: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4360
    Mac download: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4359
Note that the 30 day trial palces no restrictions on use (i.e. you can edit, export, create web galleries or slideshow and even make prints).

  • Using a Digital Camera (like a Canon Powershot/Elph/Ixus) with iChat

    Hello
Anybody know if its possible to use a small digital camera like a Canon Powershot with video capabilites with iChat - instead of an iSight or built in camera like on the new Intel MacBooks?
    Thanks

My current camera on my G4 is a stills camera.
It is a Kodak DC4800 of some vintage now.
It has a PAL (or NTSC) TV signal that it can output.
From there I use a DV Converter to get it into iChat.
Effectively this means it depends on the Output and what you have to get it in to iChat.
If the camera can stream Video then it is better if you have a Firewire device.
If the Camera can be seen by iMovie but not iChat then try
http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/ as it would then have Mac Drivers if it has a USB connector.

Can I use the iPad 2 camera in man messenger as a webcam please

Which Msn Messenger app are you using? There are several in the app store. And does it support the iPad's camera? Info on the apps page should state that clearly if it does.

  • Using a digital camera with iPhoto 5

I have a nice Kodak camera that is 3.1 MP. It seems like I can only connect my camera to my computer via iPhoto or Kodak's software. I cannot browse the SD card from the computer directly.
Is there some way with iPhoto to browse the cameras images and videos, or do I always have to import the images and videos?
    John

    Hi John
you can browse the images and video with the image capture application. connect and turn on the camera before launching the application. you can then choose which to import. one other thing, does your camera show up as a removable drive? if it does, open it up as you would a folder.

  • Does Adobe have a product that archives existing photos by using a digital camera instead of a scanner?

Similar to what the app "Heirloom" does?

No, Aperture does not have Speckle filters. But your white spots and lines are not exactly Speckle noise. For a real Speckle noise (Salt and Pepper) you would have very dark spots as well.
In Aperture you could try to reduce the white spots and lines by applying the smoothing brush selectively to the darker areas, but that will only soften the spots, not remove them completely. Or use the "Repair" tool to remove the spots.
One filter that works well with small, bright spots is the median filter, but that is missing in Aperture. In Photoshop or similar external editors you can use the  filter "Expend dark areas" (I am not sure how this filter is called in the english version - my Photoshop has german menus). This will shrink the white spots and white lines by expanding the darker regions. You need to set the radius to half of the size of the spots.

  • Using digital camera as webcam

Well, it'd be nice to use my digital camera as a webcam under linux(I can do it under windows). The camera is a Nova DC-2L (finding info for it is a bitch). Well I'm wondering on how to get it working as a webcam under linux..
Under windows all I gotta do is set the cam to webcam mode on the camera then plug it in, and it's good to go from there..
Well I dunno what driver the camera uses as a webcam so I guessed qc-usb as it seemed to be the only one listed on the wiki page
sorta preEDIT: Ok as I was about to post the device info I seen that Zoran is what it came up as, so I looked it up and the module for it is zr36067, but when I try to modprobe it I get:

First of all, use udev. devfs is mostly useless if you want to use USB.
in udev rules, you need something like:
    #camera
    KERNEL="sda*" SYMLINK="camera%n"
    KERNEL="video[0-9]" SYMLINK ="video%n"
I dont like a zillion groups, so I change my permissions,
    sd*:root:users:660
    #camera devices
    camera*:root:users:0600
    usb/dc2xx*:root:users:0600
    usb/mdc800*:root:uesrs:0600
The problem with devfs prevented me from using my camera as a webcam and mounted storage device without restarting devfs and fiddling with the mounting of usbfs or whatever it was called.
    cat /proc/bus/usb/devices
should tell you what is being seen on the bus.

  • My ipad 4 will not sync my photos i took with my cannon digital camera, it worked 1 week ago and now will not??If in put it under video on the ipad i can not share or email.

Had an Ipad 2 from Christmas 2011, used a digital camera to record video, a cannon ELPH series, I put the video in my Iphoto on my mac book pro and WAS able to sync them to my photo on my IPAD. The little photo with the camera icon on it was great no problems.!!! Then I was not able to do this any more, I had to drop the video into the video icon on the ipad from my itunes accunt, however you can not send the video to any one from the ipad like you can under the photo Icon, the buffering was also bad.  I got a new Ipad 4 for Christmas and again I was able to sync video when i connected it to my ipad and video i recorded with the cannon camera from halloween showed up GREAT!!! This was stored on my Ipad under the Photo Icon and I can send an email, imessage, etc with the vieo. Fast forward another week put my Christmas videos on my mac book pro and when i plugged my ipad to my mac book to sync in it again did not work, it would not sync the video to my photos, though I JUST did it a week earlier and it worked (those videos are still on the IPAD 4 and work fine). Why can I not do it now, I can drop the video into the video Icon on the IPAD and watch, but you can not send it anywhere as if u had it stored under the photo icon.???

What is the file name of the video(s) you want to sync?
Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • Using a different Camera

I want to use a different camera to take a picture in Photo Booth. I connect the camera and the mac recognizes it. I can download pictures but I want to take a good quality picture with the effects. Any ideas?

    Hello again, dumbo275
Thanks for letting us know you found the info above helpful.
You probably cannot (or, at least, should not) disconnect your built-in iSight. Here are some alternatives that you can consider.
    (1) Unless you are an Apple Service Technician, trying to disconnect your internal iSight will likely void any warranty or Apple Care. Even worse, you might damage something while trying. There are no user serviceable parts for iSight. If you decide that you want your built-in iSight disconnected, see your Apple Authorized Service Provider. He can disconnect it for you in such a way that it could be reconnected should you eventually want to use your built-in iSight again.
    (2) Rather than disconnecting your built-in iSight, you could use the instructions in this article to disable it. (It is generally a bad idea to move, modify, rename, or delete any item outside your User > Documents folder unless you are an experienced OS X user.) Once your built-in (USB) cam is disabled, Photo Booth can use your Firewire cam. Because removing the QT component file disables every USB cam connected to your system, this workaround is only useful for users who have an external Firewire cam. If you decide to use this method to disable your built-in iSight, be sure and keep the file in a safe place so you can put it back when you want to use your built-in USB cam again.
    (3) If you do not need to make multiple pictures quickly, here's an alternative that does not endanger your Mac's hardware or software integrity. It doesn't use Photo Booth at all. First, make a normal image with the higher-quality camera of your choice. Then, if you used a digital camera, transfer the image to your Mac. Next, open the saved image and modify it using an image editing software application like PhotoShop (PS) or PhotoShop Elements (PSE) to simulate the Photo Booth effects you want. Although it is impossible to EXACTLY DUPLICATE a specific Photo Booth "effect", it is easy to use the various "Filters" and other menu commands in PS or PSE to make an image that most viewers would assume was made with Photo Booth. After a bit of practice, you can do this editing fairly quickly. Although never, of course, as simple as clicking the Photo Booth button, this approach may be worthwhile for those cases where Photo Booth image quality is inadequate for your needs.

  • Front Row Photos won't play digital camera videos

    Hi,
Firstly, I'm pretty new to Macs but have been finding my feet with most of my new toy's functionality. I've encountered one problem that I can't seem to find an answer to and was hoping someone here would be able to help.
I've used iPhoto to import all of my old photos/videos from my digital camera and have arranged these into a mixture of events and smart-folders. When viewing these via the Photos menu in Front Row, the automatic slideshows play back all my photos just fine, but any videos that were taken at the same time are just shown as a black screen. When I say videos, I mean little video clips that were taken using the digital-camera (640x480 and 30fps).
    A few other bits of info that may help with this;
    - The videos play fine in iPhoto.
    - The black screen appears for the same duration that photos are shown, rather than the length of the video.
    - I created a Movies smart-folder, if I hover the selection over this item within Front Row, I'm shown a slideshow of the initial frame of the videos contained within.
    - The camera is a Canon Powershot A700 which stores videos as AVIs using the MJPEG format.
Am I trying to do something silly? Should the Photos section of Front Row not be used for video playback? Its a shame if that is the case, as they're memories of that event.
However, the fact that Front Row shows the black screen where the video should be gives me the impression that it is attempting to play it. Otherwise I would expect it to ignore all non-image file formats.
Any help with this would be hugely appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Ian

    Hi,
    With a bit of additional searching I seem to have found an answer to my question. Unfortunately it's not the answer I wanted and this seems to be a known issue. The post I found that describes this is here;

I'll be raising it in the feedback form.
