Using my drive on another mac while mine gets repaired

Hi! Something is really wonky with my Macbook Pro's screen (about 1.5 inches on the right side of it the pixels are really distorted and jerking up and down), and I have a feeling it will need to be sent in for repairs when I take it to the apple store. I have no idea how long repairs take as I've never had any problems before, but my laptop is vital for all the design and business work I do.
I've backed up my Macbook with Time Machine to a USB external drive, and am wondering if it is possible to move the backup to a family member's iMac we have here and work from that computer during the repairs, but without erasing the data already on the iMac. While I was researching this question I found people discussing the Carbon Copy Cloner as well, and since it's free I can try using that if it would work better.
Is there a way to do this? (In layman's terms, please!) Thanks so much.

Don't wait until the problem returns to make a bootable backup/clone. If you do, you might not be able to do it. One should always have one that's kept up to date, especially before updating or upgrading. See these for details:

  • Is it possible for a G4 to use optical drive of another mac over a network

Well, is it? For some reason the optical drive on my G4 won't read certain CD's that are read by other Macs I have, but I can't see those drives over my network?

You can connect to it with file sharing, but you won't be able to use it as an installation source. In other words, you won't be able to reboot the G4 and see that drive over the network to boot from it.
If your G4's optical drive is consistently problematic, you could replace it quite easily and cheaply (if it's a desktop), or you might look at external optical drives.

  • I'm trying to clone a internal hard drive from another mac using a usb connection.

I'm trying to clone a internal hard drive from another mac using a usb connection to an external drive so that I don't lose the file before reinstalling the software but I keep on getting a message:
    "Restore Failure
Source volume is read-write and cannot be unmounted, so it can't be block copied."
Any advice on how to make a copy of this internal drive?
    Thanks!
....also the internal hard drive i am trying to copying run on a mac os x 10.5 and i'm reinstalling the software because the computer is not starting and only shows a grey folder with a question marks inside.

I've had my Maxtor external OneTouch 250GB for about 18 months now and it hasn't skipped a beat. I have hear of people having their Maxtor drive just up and die but you will probably find that goes for all manufacturers.
By the way, Maxtor is, amongst others, an OEM supplier to Apple.

That's exactly what I tried to do, but the iPhoto librry doesn't show up in the pulldown menu. If I click "Choose Folder", the iPhoto library is greyed out and unable to be selected.
For some reason, iPhoto is an option in the pulldown library on my older iMac but not on my MacBook Pro. What gives?

Not sure which driver you mean when you say "the driver in the Mac's list". Apple does not provide a driver for this device, so if you mean one of the default printers that are included with 10.6, like the Generic Postscript or Generic PCL, then these will only work if the optional PS or PCL print kits were installed in the machine. Given your inability to print then it would seem that you have neither kit installed. So this would require you to install the Canon UFR2 driver, which you can obtain via this link.
With the UFR2 driver installed, you add the printer using IP > LPD. Enter the IP address of the iRC2380, leave the Queue name blank and change the Name to iRC2380. Leave the Location field blank and in the Print Using menu, browse to the "Canon iR C2380/2550 UFR II (UK)". Click OK and then Add to complete the queue creation. You should now be able to print. Please reply if it does not work.

  • I take a .NEF file and a .JPG file with every click. When I transfer the files using a flash drive to another computer I never get all of the files to transfer. I get some of the .NEF and some of the .JPGs but not all

I take a .NEF file and a .JPG file with every click. When I transfer the files using a flash drive to another computer I never get all of the files to transfer. I get some of the .NEF and some of the .JPGs but not all. How come?

If you're exporting a project then you'll only get the images in that project. Also if any of the masters are referenced then you won't get those masters unless you check Consolidate masters into exported library
It might be best if you started from the beginning and explained what it is your are trying to do and how you're going about doing it. Also a description of you're hardware/software setup would be helpful.

  • I migrated a user from another mac and cant get any updates to install!

    Hi
I migrated a user from another mac and cant get any updates to install, for example it says iPhoto is intalled but its not, i never copied it from the older imac, and i cant download it to this one now
    any help appreciated

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • How to bring files from time machine (ext drive) to another mac?

Getting another Mac and need to install specific files from a Time Machine Backup of another Mac.
Has anyone done this without Time Machine doing a full restore on the new Mac? I'd like to bring over items such as: preferences, Mail files, Safari bookmarks, pictures, etc.
    Thanks.

I am not adverse to using migration assistant.
With your suggestion, among others I shall. However, I think it is better to load applications from my DVD's into the new Mac, then open and use the migration assistant. Don't you agree?
Otherwise, I think, the migration assistant on initial startup of the new Mac will migrate files that do not have apps already installed. Maybe that does not matte?? Does it will migrate over apps first? All shall come from my TM backup which I am concerned were from a Power PC G5, to now to run on an Intel based Mac, and I thought it best to load apps without any touch from the PPC.
Please, tell me if I do not need to install apps first and then run migration assistant. Thanks to all...

  • Can't mount as a disk on another Mac (not mine)

I'd like to use my shuffle as a disk and transfer files from my machine to another Mac. This other Mac is an iMac G5 and had iTunes 6.0.2 with OS X.4.4. Everytime I plug in my shuffle, iTunes starts up tells me
The iPod "ShuffleName" is linked to another iTunes music library. Do you want to change the link to this iTunes music library and replace all existing songs on this iPod with those from this library?
I, of course, answer 'No' because I don't want to lose my songs or download any songs from this iMac. I just want to access the documents on the data portion of my shuffle. As soon as I click 'No' the shuffle is unmounted from the computer and I have no access to it.
How can I use the shuffle for data on a computer without linking it to an iTunes library?!?
      Mac OS X (10.4.4)

but what if I want to get tunes from another mac on
my shuffle without removing all the tunes from my mac
    (on the shuffle)?
Reading through one of MacAddict's issues I remember
seeing them say it can be done, but they didn't say
how. I assumed it would be simply plug and play, but
like the original poster said, it wants me to switch
    links to the new iTunes.

  • Backup to external drive connected another mac?

Can you backup over the network to an external FW drive connected to another mac? I'm sure I've read that this is possible but not sure of the procedure. I can connect to the external drive over the network, it pops up on the desktop but Time Machine simply won't see it. Is there a trick to this? Thanks.

The other mac must be running Leopard, the drive must be properly formatted. If you are able to mount the other mac's volume to your mac, then you must have logged in correctly with the right account. Given all this, TM should then list the volume when choosing the destination drive in preferences.

Where did you buy it? Did you buy it 2nd hand? It could have been locked to another network & will need unlocking by them.

Please be advised that we are individual users just like you.  I understand and appreciate that you use your MBP in a vocational environment and evidently it is critical for you to have a functioning MBP at all times.  Unlike some car dealers, Apple does not have a 'loaner' program.
You may be able to talk the local Apple store to lend you one, but they are under no obligation to do so.  As BobTHeFisherman suggests, the only reasonable solution for the current situation and possible future ones, is to have a backup MBP, ready to be used if the primary one fails.
Even if you got a 'loaner', I question the practicality of setting it up and transferring data in a timely manner that would enable it to be used for your job.  The quick and temporary solution to you situation is to purchase an external DVD drive that can substitute for the internal one with the entrenched CD.  This should permit you to continue your work uninterrupted with all functions of your MBP still at your disposal.
    Ciao.

  • Can Leopard be installed from a Firewire Drive or Another Mac?

I have a Mac Mini with a faulty Super Drive. It's not really a problem since I only use it as a network appliance and rarely install software via CD/DVD. But now I don't know know how to upgrade it to Leopard. And since its my File server, I can't use it with Time Machine.
Is it possible to put the install on one of my Firewire Drives and install it from there?
    Any advice?

    Dear Cabak
You may have options, but I am not sure as I have only two days with Leopard thus far, but....
I am positive with Tiger it was possible to start the client computer up in Target Disk Mode and use the host computer to "upgrade", "archive and upgrade", or "clean install" the operating system.
You will actually start the HOST computer up with the install disc AFTER you have the client computer in TDM. You simply choose the client computer hard drive and select the type of install you prefer to do.
Remember to check the client computer for any offending files that will cause you to get caught in a blue screen freeze on startup. There are plenty of threads in the discussions about people having this problem. Read the following document if you are not aware of the situation.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306857
The beautiful thing about this (if there were one) is that you can remove these files easily while in Target Disc Mode. These are the files you should get rid of before the upgrade process...
    /Library/Preference Panes/Application Enhancer.prefpane
    /Library/Frameworks/Application Enhancer.framework
    /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/Application Enhancer.bundle
    /Library/Preferences/com.unsanity.ape.plist
I think you will be pleased with the outcome of your efforts.
