Using my external hard disk as storage for itunes

I am using a Powerbook with 80 GB internal HD and it ist getting quite stuffed with my 30 GB of music. I copied my complete iTunes folder from the PB to my external firewire drive (300 GB) and erased the itunes folder from the internal HD. In settings i changed the root for the itunes folder but itunes does not seem to recognise the folder. The bibliothec stays empty. Who can help me?

This is the recommended way to move iTunes Music.

What are the iTunes library files?
The main thing is just consolidate your iTunes Music folder to the other HD. Leave the iTunes Library file & iTunes Music Library.xml file in the iTunes folder in its original location.

I followed the instructions from the link you offered. All my files/music,games etc. showed up on my new external hard drive, however there is no iTunes itself, just the files. Can you offer more assistance? Thanks.

  • Using External Hard Drive as storage for iTunes Library - Problems

I currently use an external hard drive to store my iTunes music, does anyone know why when I copy folders to iTunes library, duplicates appear - sometimes 2 or 3 copies of same song, same artist, album everything. A trud copy. Also, when you are setting up your music folder on the External Hard drive, would you copy from C: the entire iTunes tree - ie. iTunes/iTunes music/iTunes library or just have one folder called iTunes library? Also, when specifying location for finding music in preferences, again would you use entire tree of just iTunes music library.

See Dave Sawyer's post here - it's the easiest way

  • HT201250 if I used external hard disk for backup time machine, is it possible to use that external hard disk to save another else from diffrent computers?

If I used external hard disk for back up time machine, is it possible to use that external hard disk to save another else from diffrent computers?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can do this, but you should make a new volume on your external disk. Time Machine needs a volume that is only used to store backups, so you can't store other data in the same volume as the one you are using for making backups.
If you want to create another volume on your external disk, use Disk Utility to do this > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html Anyway, you should get another external disk to store other files, but if you don't want to, you can create another volume in it

I have bought a time capsule to use as time machine device. Until now I have used a external hard disk. How can I transfer the the old time machine datas to the time capsule?

This is really difficult to the point of not really worth it.
Keep the old TM backups in archive.. and start afresh on the TC.
Time Machine has a different way of backing up on Network drives cf Local drives.
Pondini does have a method to do it... but I would not recommend it.

  • I have transfered all my library on an external hard disk and lost the itunes library files.

I transfered all my library on an external hard disk and lost the itunes library files. Itunes created new ones but I lost all the playlists.
How can I copy the playlists presents on the Iphone directly on Itunes ?
If I want to syncronise now, I lost all playlists datas.

    Hi,
I did the same XP to Windows 7 upgrade about 18 months ago.   I decided to keep iTunes permanently on the external drive than the c drive to save c: drive space.
ITunes database has pointers to MP3 files located in Artist's directories.  If you want to use a different location than the default C:\ drive for iTunes, then you need to recreate the Itunes database by deleting all songs in iTunes, then change the default location for iTunes files to your external drive.  Then import the MP3 files from the external drive into the empty iTunes database through the iTunes import facility.
If you screw up the timing of the import and find you have multiple iTunes directories (instead of just the default location), then iTunes has a new feature to consolidate all iTunes MP3 files back into the central default location.  In iTunes, FILE, LIBRARY, ORGANIZE LIBRARY, then CONSOLIDATE FILES.
To change the default directory for MP3 files, in Tunes go to EDIT, PREFERENCES, ADVANCED and then CHANGE the location to where you want the Itunes MP3 files to be located (including the iTunes subdirectory under which all the artist directories are held.  Mine are on the F: drive or whatever your computer states is your drive assignment for the external drive.
Note iTunes 10.5 has many problems that Apple hopefully are working on....we seem to have gone backwards on working components in this iCloud based release.  So maybe keep on using old computer until 10.6 is released.

  • Is it safe to keep downloaded movies in the Macbook Pro or do I need to use an external hard disk for those ? Please suggest.

Is it safe to store the downloaded movies from iTunes in my Macbook Pro or do I need to store those separately in an external hard disk ? Please advice.

It will be no better or worse than any other video file and should not be responsible for any system instability.  As I alluded to earlier, video takes up a lot of space and you can quickly use up that 200 GB of space.  Download a few files to you MBP and see what impact it has.  I have a couple of external HDDs dedicated to video files (and backups of same) due to the large file sizes.
If you find that space is getting tight on your MBP, then get an external for the video files and another one to back them up.  I have a couple of external HDDs dedicated to video files (and backups of same) due to the large file sizes.
    Ciao.

  • What is the best way to share music wirelessy at home using a external hard disk?

We would like to find the best way we can access wirelessly our music track stored on a external hard disk at home?  We would it to be able to access them by using MAC, PCs, iPads, Android and iphones.

Personally, I use MobileMe and let my family watch the movies on line. It is easy to share this way. I share the movie in Large (960x540) or Medium to iTunes. Then I share to Mobile Me.
For personal viewing, I use the Apple TV.
You can also burn a data DVD of your finished movie, and let them copy the file to iTunes from their data DVD.
You can upload the movie to other video sharing services such as YouTube or Vimeo.
You can burn a blu-ray disk if you have Toast and a BluRay burner. You can burn a short movie to regular DVD media using Toast and a regular DVD burner that is playable on most BluRay Players.

  • Is it possible to use an external Hard disk to install Windows OS (7 or 8) for bootcamp?

I have recently got a Macbook Pro with Retina Display 13" late 2013, with 120 GB of memory. I want to install a Windows OS on my macbook but i dont want to take up the sace on it, so instead i got an external Hard Drive with 500 GB with the Mac OS Extended (journaled) format and i was wondering if i can use that for installing Windows and access it using BootCamp.
I dont want to use my macbook storage for windows... so any ideas?

    Macologist250,
to use Boot Camp, Windows must be on your MacBook Pro’s internal disk. You could try a virtualizer such as VirtualBox or Parallels Desktop if you’d rather have Windows on an external disk.

  • External Hard Drives & Online Storage for Photographers

I would like to purchase new external hard drives and am also looking into online storage websites. I am wondering if some external hard drives are better than others when it comes to storing photos. And would also like recommendation for online storage.
Are there certain photo saving "rituals" or systems that you would recommend for keeping your photos safe and backed up.
Lastly, please recommend your favorite portable external hard drives when you are mobile.
    Thank you

I have two 4TB Drobo's that are my primary storage of my digital files. My Aperture libraries reside on my Alu iMac internal drive (more on this later). My 2008 Aperture library contains about 35,000 images, all referenced to image files stored on a 2nd Gen Drobo. I don't think it is the fastest solution out there, and surprisingly it seems slower than a USB 2.0 transfer. Having said that, when I am actively working in Aperture on a project, I rarely notice a delay. From this I have concluded that I am very slow or at least the speed of the 2nd Gen Drobo keeps up with me.
As a bit of warning on Drobo. In December, I was keeping my library on the Drobo and it was taking forever to open (5-20 minutes) and eventually the library became corrupted. I rebuilt it and a few days later it become corrupted again. This is the only time I have ever had problems with my libraries. After the second time, I repaired the library and moved it to my internal drive and it has been fine ever since. Also, I noticed that on occasion Aperture would tell me that an image was an unsupported format and NO program would open the RAW file. If I replaced the RAW file from a back up copy, then Aperture was fine and could open the file. I also noticed that there would be stretches of files (5-20) sequentially named, that became corrupted so no program could open them. ( I was operating the Drobo's with Firmware 1.2.2, I think. After considerable discussion with Drobo I upgraded the Firmware to 1.3 and they also replaced the offending case with a new one. After the upgrade to 1.3, I have not had any new events of corruption since upgrading to 1.3. I could readily copy the corrupted file to another drive without evidence that the file was sick.
But contained in this story is an interesting puzzle. Historically, I was managing backup of my image files by using SuperDuper copying from one WD 2 TB drive to another WD 2 TB drive. In this scenario, the corrupted files would have been copied and my image files effected would have been lost forever. I really don't know how the vault would work in this situation.
With this thought, I have changed my strategy for backup. I work on the project with the image files residing on the Drobo. Once done, I export the pictures usually to a JPEG format for the client. IF the initial RAW is corrupted, I am warned as to which files could not be exported. If everything goes fine, then I know my primary image files are ok. I then export the project to an another external drive (I all it xxxxxx ARCHIVE) where I keep a separate library and I then import the project into that ARCHIVE library; Once imported I relocate my masters out of the library into my finder based folder system.
I also generate a temporary project file as soon as I import into Aperture and store that temporary project file on my ARCHIVE drive.
    Hope this provides some insight.
    Regard, steven

  • Using an external hard-disk with both mac and XP

I would like to use an external USB hard-drive to use with both my XP desktop and Macbook. This is mainly to store photo's and music. Am I right in believing this is possible so long as I format the disk in FAT32 first. Is there a file size limitation?

    Hi,
I was planning to buy the Western Digital 'My Passport Essential 160GB USB Portable Hard Drive'. If I formatted that as FAT32 - would that be ok. Also can I use it as my ITunes 'base'?
    Yes and yes.
But be aware that you can encounter difficulties with USB-powered external HDs, since such drives generally need more power from the USB port than a Mac and/or PC usually can deliver.
My personal choice would be to get a power supply for the external HD.

  • How to use external drive as extra storage for itunes (tv shows primarily)

I have bought quite a few tv shows and started downloading them on ITunes but realised but I dont have enough space....what is the best way to deal with this. I have a HP pavilion tx1000 with vista....PLS HELP!

    That's easy to fix.
At pretty much any computer store, you can find
external hard drives with a variety of disk space,
ranging up to 750 GB or even more. For example:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8294017&
    st=externalharddrive&type=product&id=1172277308443
Sometimes it's also possible to get just the drive
without the outer covering, which you would have to
    buy and assemble separately.
Anyways, with that all set, connect it to your
computer's USB port and you can now use it. If your
computer is out of space, then you'd probably want to
move the movie onto the external drive instead of
just saving a copy there, since that won't save you
space on your normal computer drive. Now, once the
file is in the external drive, double click it to add
it to your iTunes' library, and you're all set.
One thing to watch for is try to keep the external
hard drive's name consistent. If you first opened it
as drive J, but when you turned it on the next time
you already have drive J as another jump drive, then
the external drive will have no choice but to adopt
another name, like Drive K. This causes a problem
because iTunes only recognizes one pathway for the
files, and you'll get a message saying "cannot find
file would you like to locate it". If you don't have
a lot of movies, that's fine, because it wouldn't
take that long to locate it manually. But if you have
a lot, it would be frustrating. So just try to keep
    the name the same.
And since you already have an external hard drive, I
would recommend backing up your music and library
too. Copy, don't cut, the folders as they are into
the external hard drive for back up files. And go to
File and Export Library... in iTunes to back up your
    library.
What you are saying makes sense but I think I need more details - I am pretty new at this....
How do I move just the TV shows from my laptop to the external drive? Or should I just move my whole ITunes library? When I am done, can I use this drive with my other computer too?
    thanks!!!!

  • How do I use an external hard drive as my primary itunes library?

I am trying to move my primary itunes folder to an external hard drive to free up space on my C drive.  I moved all applicable folders and made the appropriate changes so that all the music and movies would play from their new location.  But, when I shut down and then restart itunes, it recreates the folders on the C drive and makes me reestablish the links all over again.  Can't I make it start up using the external drive folder as its primary location?

The most effective way to do this is to copy the entire iTunes folder from the <User's Music> on the C: drive to the root of your external drive, without making any changes to the iTunes Media folder. You would then press and hold down shift while launching iTunes so that you get a prompt to choose or create a library. You click choose and browse to the new copy of the library on the external drive.
If you have ny iOS devices their backup still get stored within your profile folder on the C: drive.
You should also consider backing up the library to another drive.

  • Using an external hard drive to house my iTunes library

I have a Western Digital external hard drive plugged into my black macbook and had it set up to have my itunes default library to be on the hard drive. I select it when it is plugged in and have had to transfer all of my music over to it and went through the process of keeping the files organized as iTunes prompts, however I am working on a laptop and unplug the external to go to class or take it somewhere that I wont be needing music. I plugged it back in after and added music to it as I would buy a cd and rip it and unknown to me it hadn't been adding it to the hard drive's iTunes library but it recreated the iTunes folder on my computer that I had trashed when I moved everything over. And when I plugged the external in, it made me redo everything and said a bunch of the files couldn't be found.
Is this even a possibility? Or do I need to keep it plugged in constantly for something like this to work :/

    From here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
If you move your library to an external drive, you'll need to power up and connect the drive *before starting iTunes*. If you don't, iTunes will prompt you to either locate the library or to create a new library (which will result in an empty library).

  • I cannot continue to use my external hard disk which I used with windows. OS 10.8 can read it but declares the disk as "read only". Is there a way to change this?

    Hallo everyone,
I just tried my external disk on my Macbook air and I cannot save data to it any longer. This external disk was used with windows. Now i want to use it with macbookAir as I have changed my computer. It seems that OSX.10.8.5 can read the data on this external drive but when I try to save new data to it (pdf documents from the web for example) it refuses to save the data ans the message I get is that my drive is "read only". Please is there a way to change this or do I have to format the re-format the external drive?
    Thanks for your help

You will have to reformat the drive for use with a Mac.
Mac only: Format as MacOS Extended (Journaled)
Mac and Windows: Format to MSDOS
