Using my iMac in the UK

I bought my iMac here in the US in 2008 but will be in the UK next year. Do I need to purchase an adaptor/alternator to use my computer in the UK. Any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Your system power requirements should be:
Line voltage: 100-240V AC
Frequency: 50Hz to 60Hz, single phase
So you'll need a plug adapter for the UK, but that's it. Google 'uk plug adapter' and you'll see several you can buy. Or you can buy the pricey (compared to a plug) Apple adapter kit: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB974ZM/B?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY . If you can't find one locally or don't want to order one, they are usually for sale in the Airport shops.

You need a network connection and a product such as ScreenRecycler. All such products require a bootable OS on the iMac.

What is the resolution of the picture that you are trying to print?
Go to Image>resize>image size, read the resolution in px/in, then report back, please.
Also, are you in a position to try printing with another printer in an attempt to narrow this down?

Is it possible to use an iMac as the display for a Mac mini?

iMacs late 2009 or newer can be used in Target display
mode.  Any older, no can do.
The only other way is via network Screen Sharing or
some otherVPN network like solution.  The issue here
though is that video performance will be pretty severely
    hampered.

  • Network printing problems using an iMac as the server

I am running an iMac OS 9 computer as a server. There are three computers (an iMac, an iBook both running OS 9, and a Powerbook G4, running OS 10.4) connected to the server via ethernet.
Here is the problem: all three computers have been printing from the network printer for over 2 years with no problems whatsoever. As of late, all three stations are attempting to print unsuccessfuly with a message stating that the document cannot be printed because the printer could not be found. The error message asks if you would like to cancel printing or try again. After trying again the document successfully prints (sometimes after one attempt, other times after several attempts). The chooser is recognizing the printer and all settings seem to be correct. I have notice that when selecting the chooser the printer icon does not show up immediately. There appears to be a bit of a delay before the network recognizes it. The printing funtion will work, it is just a bit frustrating that you must sometimes make more than one attempt to print. It does not occur everytime you attempt to print, only most of the time.
One more note, in conjuntion with this error, I have noticed that other applications running through the server will run lightning fast and then all of a sudden will seem to run very slow. When working within an application, windows will appear to freeze for a short time and them resume normally.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I personally use ElGato and it works great, and I too don't use the DVR functionality.

  • Using iMac and the display for MacBook Air

    Evening all
I'm trying to hook my MacBook Air up to my iMac in order to use my iMac as the Macbook's display.
I've just been out and bought a thunderbolt cable, plugged one end into my Macbook and the other into my iMac... pressed command +  F2 but nothing happens?
    I've also tried command + ctrl + F2...
    Where am I going wrong??
    Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately the instructions do not help me... They suggest that the target display should function provided that a thunderbolt cable is plugged in to each device... however, when I press Command and F2, nothing happens?
I've tried rebooting both computers, resetting the PRAM and nothing works?

  • Can I use my iMac as a wireless base station

    Hi Everyone
I would like some help on using my I5 Imac as my entry point to a wireless system. I have the ethernet connected to my Imac, I have gone to sharing and selected internet sharing so as to use my Imac as the unit sending out the wireless signal. First questions, with LION osx how do I password protect this wieless network I'm setting up?
Next I have 2 airport expresses. On is used to extend the range of my Imac signal and the other connected to speakers. Can someone walk me through the steps in airport utility to A - extend the Imac range using one of the airport expresses and B - connect to my powered speaker.
A lot to ask but any help would be greatly appreciated
    Cheers

  • Do I need to dedicate a computer such as a Mini to set up a server? Or can I use my iMac as my server for my 2 man company?

I was considering using my iMac for the server. Can I us it as my main computer as well as the server?
    Jim

As cpragman writes, more information helps tailor the answer.
As for the question posed, iMac will work just fine as a server and I know folks that use that, but a central consideration of any "repurposing" of a workstation for this is that servers deal with more than one person and usually with continuous access and comparatively few outages.  This for server-oriented services such as mail, DNS, Messages, web services, etc.  A workstation can boot and crash and be reconfigured or wiped and reloaded maybe not at a whim, but the workstation outages basically disrupt just one user.  Server outages can cause headaches for multiple users and uses.

  • Using 27'' iMac (2012) as extended monitor for MacBook Air (2012)?

Hi all, I'm trying to find a solution how to use my iMac as the extended monitor for my MacBook Air. I saw the video on YouTube >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bVOssjlsGY << but I am not sure if it is real or fake. I have checked the forums here and other sources, but I haven’t seen any official statement about the possibility to use thunderbolt cable for this purpose. Do you have any experiences with that? Or can you advice please?

Yes, you can use the 27" as a monitor with Target display mode.  Just attach the two with a Thunderbolt cable and press Command F2 on the iMac.  It will become a secondary monitor for the MBair.

  • IMac with the iPhoto application

Using an iMac with the iPhoto application. When trying to email a photo, the message appears to be sent. However, a popup box requests the Yahoo password. When entered, an error message occurs.
Is there a way to set the Yahoo! email username?
Firefox is set to Yahoo! mail.

doesn't yahoo mail need a plus service to be used in such POP applications??

  • Finding iBooks using my iMac

It would be great to be able to search the iBook store for books using my iMac. The big box book stores do this for their ebooks, and then you can save the book to a book shelf or a wish list which is available for later purchase and download. Apple assumes that everyone lives on their iPad. Sorry to tell them I don't. I am on my iMac more than my iPad. Primarily using it to read books when I go for medical treatments.

Dave, I am aware of the other sources. I received my iPad as a Christmas gift. At the same time the family members who give me the iPad gave my wife a Barnes and Noble Nook. So I have the Nook app on the pad along with the library app so I can borrow ebooks from the library. So far I haven't found the library books I really want but I'll keep searching.
I'll also check out the website.
I just hope Apple will take this idea to the next step.

  • How do I get messages to go back to an AIM account? It's only seeing the iPad's Facetime email address and not seeing the old AIM account name that is on my desktop. I am using my iMac using iChat to talk to a newer iMac that doesn't have iChat.

How do I get messages to go back to an AIM account? It's only seeing the iPad's Facetime email address and not seeing the old AIM account name that is on my desktop. I am using my iMac using iChat to talk to a newer iMac that doesn't have iChat. We had this working using Messages and Facetime (on the new machine) talking to my existing iChat account. One day last week, when Facetime rang, my kids answered on the iPad. Dang! Now it's all fouled up! The new iMac won't see my AIM account name and shows that I'm offline, because the iPad is off. We were able to call using "most recent call" in Facetime, but now I can't go and control that new iMac remotely to help with some email concerns the user is having. I'm trying to not personalize this too much, but it's grandkids talking to Grandma and Mom and Dad trying to solve new machine hiccups. Normally, I could just go in via iChat and control the other machine and troubleshoot, but I can't do it with Facetime only. My buddy list doesn't see  the other computer even though we are connected on Facetime right now. My name is not highlighted for the other computer. What could have gone so wrong?
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • My wife and I share the same iTunes account.  How can I setup a separate account for her iPhone using my iMac?

My wife and I share the same iTunes account. How do I setup a separate account for her? Can I do it using my iMac?
    Thanks

Using More than One iDevice on the Same Computer
This applies mainly to couples who are adding another device and do not want their email, messages, etc. being duplicated on both devices. To begin read: How to use multiple iPhone, iPad, or iPod devices with one computer. You need to establish a separate Apple ID and password for whomever will use the new iDevice. See Apple - My Apple ID and Frequently asked questions about Apple ID. The easiest way is to do this on the computer using iTunes: iTunes- How to set up an Apple ID within iTunes.
On the computer create a new user account for the person with the new iDevice. This will be the user account that person will always use. He/She will no longer use the other user account. This way that person will have a separate iTunes Library
Start by transferring the new device(s) to a new account along with all your data.  Save any photo stream photos that you want to keep to your camera roll (unless they are already in the camera roll) by opening your Photos app, tap on Albums icon at the bottom. Now, tap on My Photo Stream album; tap Select; tap on the photos you want to select;, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow) in the lower left corner; then tap Save to Camera Roll.
If you are syncing notes with iCloud that you want to keep then you need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself. Later you can copy and paste the text into new notes created in your new account.
Tap on Settings > iCloud > Delete Account (only deletes it from this device, not from iCloud; the person keeping the current account will not be affected,) provide the password to turn off Find My Phone and choose Keep on My iDevice when prompted.  Sign in with a different Apple ID to create your new account. Choose Merge to upload your data.
Once you are on separate accounts, you can each go to icloud.com and delete the other person's data from your account.
Note: The essence of the above was created by user, randers4. I
have made substantial changes to improve readability and syntax.
