Using my Macbook as a monitor for my telescope

Any tips for using my connecting my Macbook to my telescope and using it as a monitor for my telescope images, I have a meade with a video out, but I'm new to Macs, and am not sure on where to even start on setting it up.
Thanks

no, the macbook won't read that as an input. There should be software to utilize the USB port for the data if you like...
would be cheaper to use an old tv or a screen that has an RCA input as an input device would be over $100...
IF you absolutely want to do this, get the Elgato EyeTV Hybrid. It lets you watch TV, HDTV, record, & convert.
It also comes with the INPUT adapters so you can watch / RECORD a video / audio feed! The newest one has an FM tuner too. $150 retail. Elgato sells refurbs on their side about $50 cheaper.

  • Using a MacBook as 2nd monitor for iMac?

Hi. Got a shiny new 20" iMac with the 256MB graphics. I understand this unit can drive an external display without too much stress via the mini-DVI out. Question is, since the household is getting a Macbook soon anyways, and I'll only occasionally need a 2nd-display, is there a way to use the Macbook as a second 'dumb' monitor, simply displaying whatever is being fed to it by the iMac?
    Thanks!

Hi Duckman54: Congrats on the new Mac(s), but unfortunately the MacBook has no video input capability. You can however use another 20" monitor with the iMac.

Can I use my iMac as a monitor for my Macbook Air?

Without any knowledge of the year machines you have it's impossible to answer that question. iMacs adn MBA's have been around for many years now so we have no idea of the exact specs your machine have. Remember when posting you need to be complete and paint a picture for us as we aren't there to look for ourselves. Your question should be  posted something like:
" I have a 2011 27" iMac and a 2009 MacBook Air, can I use the iMac as an external display for my MacBook Air?"
BTW what you are referring to is called Target Display Mode. Apple does support that on some 2009-2011 iMacs. You can find additional information at:

  • Use 2008 iMac as second monitor for pc laptop

I have a 2008 iMac and wish to use it as a second monitor for my wife's laptop.  I originally bought a mini display port to vga adaptor cable and realized that it would not work.  I have to go back and buy the mini DVI to vga adapter cable to use it.  But in scouring the google links - I saw that it might not work.  It had said for 2011 and above it might, but did not mention earlier models.  I could use some direction.  If it not possible, I would rather not go and buy a new cable and try.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks  .

You need to set up Virtual Network Computing.

  • Using an emac as a monitor for a mac mini

    Hi,
Sorry if the question was already asked, but a quick search in the forum brought no answer.
I have an emac (OS9) and a mac mini(OSX). I'd like to use the emac as a monitor for the mac mini. Is it possible? How? (Both are G4, although I don't think that's relevant : I don't want to use them at the same time, only to use the Emac as a "screen")
    Many thanks.

I happen to know for a fact that you can use the internal screen on an iMac G3 333, and presumably also a 266 and 233. It has a fixed horizontal frequency so it will only display the resolutions that you can choose with it's motherboard installed: 640x480@117Hz, 800x600@95Hz, and 1024x768@75Hz. With DisplayConfigX I was even able to get other resolutions, as long as I stayed within the 60kHz horizontal frequency. If try to set it to any other resolution and refresh rate it will not work, so the best way to test it is to have another screen as your main screen so that you can set the resolutions on the iMac screen from there. I imagine that the screen in the eMac does not have a fixed horizontal frequency, so if you got the pinouts, you could probably get it working. However, I made a custom video cable for a slot loading iMac G3, and I couldn't get it to work.

  • Can I use my iMac as a monitor for a PC? If yes, how

Can I use my iMac as a monitor for a PC? If  yes, how?

That is called Target Display Mode and you are lucky it's supported in the late 2009 & 2010 27" iMacs. Apple had directions in:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924

  • To use imac 27 late2009 as monitor for macbook pro 13 rethina with thunderbolt cable

when i us a thunderbolt cable from mac book pro rethina to my imac 27 late 2009 nothing happen, even with command F2 i can not use the imac as monitor for the mcbook pro

You have got a problem: your iMac does not detect Thunderbolt cables because it has got Mini DisplayPort instead. However, you can use your iMac as a display for your MacBook Pro.
To do this, you need to get a Mini DisplayPort cable like this one and connect it to your iMac and the MacBook Pro. Then, press Command and F2 keys on your iMac and it will show up as a screen for your MacBook Pro.

  • HT1338 is there a way to use an iMac as a monitor for a Mac Book?

I want to use my new 27" iMac as a monitor for my MacBook Pro. How can I do this?

It's very easy. You just need a Thunderbolt wire and then connect your MBP with your iMac. That's it.

  • Using a 27" iMac as Monitor for PC

I am building a PC for Network Attached Storage (NAS) using FreeNAS:
    http://www.freenas.org/
Once it's all set up I'll just use the web/network interface to manage it.  But, as I assemble the PC I'll probably need a monitor to make changes to the BIOS settings.
I'm wondering whether I can use my iMac (iMac11,3) as a makeshift monitor for the PC.  Apparently it's possible to do this if the PC has a Mini DisplayPort.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924
My PC has the followoing video ports:
    - VGA
    - DVI
    - HDMI
Can anyone tell me whether I can use my iMac as monitor to a PC with one of these ports?
If so, can anyone recommend a cable to do so?  For example, this Mini DisplayPort <-> HDMI cable says it won't work for my purposes:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802 &p_id=5311&seq=1&format=2
"This device is not Bidirectional. It can only connect a Mini-DisplayPort source to an HDMI® display. It will not work in reverse."
I want to display my PC's VGA, HDMI, or DVI as the source to my iMac's Mini-DisplayPort, not the other way around.
    Thank you for your help.

But that one doesn't support the 27" screen, you need Dual-Link DVI if it's going to work at all...
Note:  This product supports single-link DVI. Dual-link DVI and the Apple 27" Cinema Display are supported by the GTV-DVIDL-2-MDP.
    Which is even more money...

  • Using Acer LCD TV as monitor for mac mini

    Hi
I'm trying to use an Acer LCD TV (AL2671W) as a monitor for my mac mini.
The only way I can get it to work is booting the mini when connected to a different monitor then plugging in the AL2671W - this then works fine. If I boot when connected to the AL2671W I receive a No Signal message.
Any help would be much appreciated!

If you have a second computer at your disposal that can be networked to your mini, consider establishing a VNC connection between the two. You can then remotely make a resolution selection on the mini while the Acer TV is attached to the mini, even in the absence of a useable screen being displayed on the Acer. Once you have remotely made the selection of your choosing that gives a satisfactory display on the Acer, it should stay that way permenantly.

  • Can I use my iPad as a monitor for my iMac?

I have an '06 model iMac running OS Lion.  Recently the screen gave up and it is difficult to see pictures.  I took it to the apple store and had it tested.  The good news is it is just the display, not the video card.  The bad news is I don't have another monitor I can use at this time.  I was wondering if there is a way I can use my iPad 3 to take the place of a monitor.  I want to mirror the image I see on the screen to the iPad.  I wouldn't mind if it were done while connected to the iMac as I prefer using the keyboard as opposed to the touch screen.  I just need a make shift monitor until I get a new mac (soon I hope).

Yes, there are a couple of apps that can do this. Read the reviews carefully, because none are perfect. Here's a writeup on one of them:
