Using my MB on a cruise

Does anyone have experience using their MB on a Celebrity Cruiseline ship?
I'm just wondering if I'll have any problems connecting (I already know it will be s-l-o-w). In particular we'll be on Infinity.
Thank you in advance for your advice.

Don't know a thing about Cruiseline. I can tell you that on Royal Caribbean it was pain to connect, and the cost was $2 per minute.

  • Using a PowerBook on a cruise ship

    Hi everyone,
    I'm currently on board Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas and frustrated because I can't use my PowerBook to connect to its WIFI service. I've found other frustrated PowerBook and iBook owners with the same problem and the help desk keeps saying the network is only for computers running Windows.
    I know from reading cruise-related message boards that other Mac users have been able to use the WIFI service. I'm hoping there is someone on here who has had success doing that and can post the network configuration, if they can remember.
    Thanks in advance!

    What are the instructions for windows users? we can
    start there and see if we can talk you through the
    set-up. There aren't windows only networks.. just ill
    informed network techs
    You also might want to try the airport forums:

    Don't let this ruin your vacation.. go out and get
    some sun for those of us here at work
    Thanks, Sandman, for the quick response but my Internet minutes ran out shortly after my post. I'm back on shore now and had a great cruise despite the inability to get my PowerBook connected.
    There were no instructions for getting online... they said launching a browser would automatically connect you to their WIFI service and you just had to log in.
    It was very frustrating for myself and two iBook owners who specifically brought our laptops after reading from other cruise-ship passengers who reported successfully they were able to use their Macs on board.
    The ship's IT staff repeated their system only supports Windows -- which is a crock, as you suggested -- and wouldn't even try to help out a Mac user. One fellow cruise passenger said the IT guy she spoke to had a look of horror on his face when "Mac" was brought into the conversation.
    No doubt Royal Caribbean does not wish to support Mac computers and therefore tells people plainly that their system does not work with Macs. It's ironic that its corporate web site is designed to work with Safari.
    Myself and the other Mac users that were on board plan to write letters/e-mail and complain about the lack of support for Mac users.
    Thanks again for your reply. I didn't even think to post my question on the Airport forum, which would've been more appropriate.
    Cheers!

  • Initializing a protected field in a subclass doesn't work

    Why doesn't this work? And if it shouldn't, how do I get around it?
    public abstract class Ship
         protected double rotationSpeed;
         protected aMethod()
              System.out.println(rotationSpeed);
    public abstract class Cruiser
         protected double rotationSpeed = 3;
    }I thought that when the method 'aMethod' it would print out '3' but it doesn't. I'm not sure why, I also tried this:
    public abstract class Cruiser
         public Cruiser()
              rotationSpeed = 3;
    But it didn't change it. How do I alter protected fields like this?

    happypigface wrote:
    Awesome, thanks, using super worked.You're welcome.
    Note that you don't need to use the 'super' keyword:
    class Cruiser extends Ship {
        public Cruiser() {
            rotationSpeed = 3; // this works too
    }but I find it clearer to use it.
    I didn't think it really mattered if I posted the code running it. I didn't really have one. The names of those fields and classes aren't real.
    ...IMO, it's best to post an SSCCE of the problem/question.

  • 10.1.2 Backward Compatibility in 10.1.3?

    I want to upgrade my development BPEL/JDeveloper install to 10.1.3, but I still need to support our BPEL applications running on 10.1.2. I know when I install BPEL's development system 10.1.3 it will replace the 10.1.2 installation. The question is:
    bq. <ol><li>Can I continue to support, compile, deploy the 10.1.2 BPEL Suitcase jars on the upgraded 10.1.3 development system to a 10.1.2 BPEL App. server?</li><li>Should I take my current BPEL suitcase jars and save them before I install 10.1.3, then redeploy them on the local 10.1.3 development server?</li><li>I also have a Solaris 10.1.2 install I use with Cruise Control to perform a complete build.  Can I</li></ol>

    Is there a better way?
    bq.
    bq.

    That approach seems good, however lots of changes when you deal with HW, adapters in 10.1.3.x
    AFAIK, 10.1.2.x is deprecated and all customers have moved seamlessly to 10.1.3.x, you would get support for 10.1.2.0.2, but no new patches/bugs will be fixed.

  • Bahamas roaming plan

    My daughter is going on a cruise for spring break, to Nassau and Coco Cay in the Bahamas. Does anyone have any advice on how to avoid huge bills if she takes her phone? A friend went to the bahamas on business, and came back with $6000 in roaming charges. His company paid it, but I don't have a company to pay if she incurrs anything, and I just got laid off from my job, so I can't afford any slip ups.
    I'd like to hear what folks here say, before I call Verizon, since I've read so many stories here of folks being told one thing by a Verizon rep, then getting told after the fact that ot wasn't true, and they owed huge amounts. Any help is appreciated.

    Hi TedKord. A cruise sounds great considering the weather outside my window! Your daughter will have the option to use her phone on the cruise. The cost will be more than domestic usage because the wireless network is owned by another company. There are a couple things that must completed prior to leaving:
    1. Dial *228 and select option 2 from the automated menu
    2. Contact Customer Service @ 800-922-0204 to have to "International Dial Allow" feature added to her line.
    I would also suggest having her disable her Facebook and/or Twitter accounts prior to leaving. Due to the constant streaming for these social media applications.Data and conversly the corresponding charges can add up quckly when using either Facebook or twitter. Using WiFi is a free option that still allows you to check your email and connect to the web. Plus it's the preferred option when traveling internationally.
    I have provided you with a link that will allow you to view the usage rates. Voice, Data and Message rates will be detailed once you select the destination and cruise line. http://businessportals.verizonwireless.com/international/traveling_to/index.html
    Have a great day!

  • DVD play in Asia?

    Hi all,
    I made a couple DVDs for my parents' 50th anniversary with iMovie and iDVD. They're taking them back to Taiwan to show their friends. Does anyone know if they'll have problems playing the DVDs with DVD players over there? Please help! Thank you very much!
    G4 iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    As far as region codes are concerned, these are they:
    REGION 1 -- USA, Canada
    REGION 2 -- Japan, Europe, South Africa, Middle East, Greenland
    REGION 3 -- S.Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Parts of South East Asia
    REGION 4 -- Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (including Mexico)
    REGION 5 -- Eastern Europe, Russia, India, Africa
    REGION 6 -- China
    REGION 7 -- Reserved for Unspecified Special Use
    REGION 8 -- Resevered for Cruise Ships, Airlines, etc...
    REGION 0 or REGION ALL -- Discs are uncoded and can be played Worldwide, however, PAL discs must be played in a PAL-compatible unit and NTSC discs must be played in an NTSC-compatible unit.
    There are differences in discs for NTSC and PAL TV systems. The MPEG video on DVD is stored in digital format, but it's formatted for one of two mutually incompatible television systems: NTSC or PAL/SECAM. Therefore, there are two kinds of DVDs: NTSC DVDs and PAL DVDs. Some players only play NTSC discs, others play PAL and NTSC discs.
    If you're in North America, Japan, Korea, the Philippines and parts of South America, you use NTSC. Most other areas of the world use PAL or SECAM. Brazil uses PAL-M. Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay use PAL-N. The rest of the world uses mainly PAL. If you're unsure what your video standard is, contact your local cable or broadcast company. Also, most video tapes and/or video tape cases will have information on them indicating what video standard the tape is. This is a good representation of what your video standard is.
    There are two ways to watch both PAL and NTSC DVDs. You can either view your DVDs on a multi-system TV, or purchase a NTSC/PAL or PAL/NTSC DVD Player.
    Presumably yours were made in NTSC format, but most PAL players can also play NTSC.
    Taiwan is in Region 3 and presumably uses PAL. A quick email to your parents should settle that!

  • PB G4 titanium will not boot

    Hello helpful people.
    I have an old workhorse titanium PBG4, until recently it was running 10.3.9.
    I recently obtained a copy of Tiger and installed it - full installation. It was going great, then a software update suggested I upgrade to 10.4.1. I did so, and everything was going smoothly until I put the PB to sleep over night.
    Now it's in limbo - won't wake up. There's is nothing on the screen (as if turned off) I have tried powering down with the power button, even taken the battery out and let it sit for a while. it doesn't seem to fully shut down or to boot up. The caps lock light and the works, but the numbers lock light does not.
    Stupidly I inserted a disc, iwork 08 installation disc... it went in no problem, and of course now I can't eject it.
    After reading another thread "won't boot...no chime except sometimes". I read this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88248
    and I identified which model PB I have (titanium G4 (gigabit ehternet), then located the PMU reset button, followed the instructions in this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
    to reset...
    No change in response from the unit.
    Any suggestions?

    To answer your questions:
    The machine ran well prior to update, from time to time it would have trouble waking from sleep mode, but sporadically, and it always resolved.
    After downloading the .1 update, there was the required restart ( I recall the software update also included 3 other software updates, one for java, one for ipod and I think the third was a security update. All chunky file sizes). Anyway, I did use the laptop for an hour or so after the .1 update. All seemed fine, nothing unusual happening, although all I used it for was web cruising. I put it to sleep unplugged from its power source, so operating only on battery power, sitting on the living room table. Between that time and when I found the problem, overnight, it didn't undergo any physical trauma, there was no one else around to touch it. In fact it wasn't moved in that time, it was where I left it.
    I've checked with my mate who loaned me Tiger, and it was indeed a retail version she bought a while after she bought her machine. it comes in its own box, still has the price tag on it...

  • How do I use my Iphone 4s camera while on a cruise, yet not receive texts and calls and ultimately , the charges?

    Hi!!!   My family is going on a cruise this summer.  I do not want to but any internet plan on board or through verizon, as it can get quite costly with
    two teenage daughters.  But, we will be using our phone cameras.  How do I block calls and texts, yet still use the camera? And does blocking them still result in no charges..roaming, international, on board, etc.?  Thanks for all advice and answers!!!

    Another option you may have is to temporarily suspend service...that would guarantee you won't have any charges for unexpected texts/calls. Might be a little more extreme then you want to do though. Contact VZW for more details on that option if interested. I would echo the idea of just using a camera versus your iPhone unless for some reason you don't own an actual point and shoot camera. You can easily put the pics on your iPhone when you return home from your trip if that is the reason you were really wanting to use the iPhone for picture taking.

  • I have an iPod Touch and am going on a cruise where I have been told that I won't be able to use Safari so I should download Firefox.  I found "Mercury Web Browser" Firefox at the app store.  Is this what I need? I'm leaving on Sept. 3rd.

    I have an iPod Touch and am going on a cruise where I have been told that Safari won't work on the ship so I need to download Firefox. My iPod said that Safari cna't download it from the Firefox website.  I found "Mercury Web Browser" Firefox, in the app store (free) and am wondering if that is what I need?  Help, I'm leaving on Sept. 3/12.  Thanks.

    - I never heard that but it may be true. It could be that for some reason Safari can't be used to log into the network. Once logged in, Safari should work fine
    - However, I see nothing that say the Mercury Web Browser is Firefox. I would contact the cruise line and ask if and how you use the ship's['s wifi for an iPhone or iPad (it will apply to iPod touch)

    I will be traveling to Hungary, Austria,Germany on a river cruise. Will I be able to use my iPad and if so what,if anything do I have to do before travel?

    Most hotels, resort, hostel & motel in Europe provide power plug adapter if you forget to bring one or couldn't get them, no worries.
    Also, most countries you are going do sell travel adapted in Apple Store & Apple Resellers.
    In addition, almost all international airport sell them as well if you plan to do a last minute shopping.
    By the way, you can lease or rent SIM / Micro-SIM card for your iPad in case you have an unlocked 3G model.
    Rates are pretty reasonable.
    This will allow you to Tweet/FB and download all your travel photos.

  • Anyone used an ipad2 with 3G on a Mediterranean cruise ship?

    I am going on an eastern Mediterranean cruise and would like to use my new iPad on the ship and in Italy, Greece, Turkey.  Can I purchase a prepaid sum card that will work foe all locations?  Wifi on board is costly. Thanks

    It would depend on which cruise line your sailing on.  All major lines have Celluar At Sea or a like service, which will enable you to use your phone, and probably your iPad 3G, on the ship. You do not need another SIM card while at sea as the cell services on the ship support both GSM and CDMA internationally. The ship's cell service is turned off while in port, so (theoretically) you would need SIM cards if you wanted to use your iPad 3G on land.
    With that being said whether you can use your iPad 3G depends on the type cell service that the ship offers. The service is very expensive, typically about $2.50 per minute plus roaming charges, even for voice calls. I really don't see how you would save any money using 3G. You would be better off buying one of the ship's Internet packages or better still, disconnect entirely while you're on your cruise. The ship's cellular data and Internet are pitifully slow and are very, very frustrating to use. You will waste a lot of minutes,(and money) simply waiting for email or and other data to download.

  • Using iphone on caribbean cruise

    what plan do I need to use internet on my iphone while on a cruise that supports wifi?
    Do I need to change any settings on my iphone while on the cruise?
    Will 3g be covered under my normal ATT iphone plan?

    what plan do I need to use internet on my iphone while on a cruise that supports wifi?
    More than likely internet access via wi-fi on the cruise ship will not be free. The cruise ship will have rates for wi-fi access that you can choose from.
    Do I need to change any settings on my iphone while on the cruise?
    If you don't want to receive or place any calls at international or cruise ship roaming rates and the same for SMS/MMS and be charged international roaming rates for data access via the cellular network, you can place your iPhone in Airplane mode followed by turning on wi-fi access. All other iPhone radios will be off except for wi-fi access on the ship.
    Will 3g be covered under my normal ATT iphone plan?
    No. International roaming or cruise ship roaming is extra for calls, messages, and internet access.

  • Using iPhone on a cruise?

    I want to avoid data charges on a NCL cruise. Can I use WIFi locally on the ship on my 5S 7.03 without triggering their internet charges? If so, how?

    Again, if you use the ship's Wifi  and they charge for it you will incurr charges.
    Depending on how the Ship charges, either by connection time, or by MB downloaded you may or may not incurr additional chargers if you are just transferring things from your Phone to the computer.
    Timed based Wifi which appears to be the one NCL uses will still charge you for time spent connected by your devices even if you download nothing from the internet.

    I have an IPhone 6 I'm going on a cruise and I won't be making calls or using data I'm just wanting to use the camera ...is there something I can do to to turn these off?

    All you need to do is turn on Airplane Mode. It's in the settings, or the easier way is to swipe up from the bottom to open the Control Center and turn on Airplane Mode there. It's the first button at the top, with the airplane icon.
    When you turn on Airplane Mode all of your data is shut off. You can optionally turn on just Bluetooth and Wifi if you want; for example, if you wanted to use the cruise ship wifi without turning on your phone radio, or if you wanted to use a Bluetooth speaker or keyboard. But if you don't need all that just turn on Airplane Mode and leave Bluetooth and Wifi off.
