Using My MBP

I have a few questions about my New Mac, they are all over the place so i figured this would be the best spot to ask, so please just bare with me.
Frist off I read that Post yesterday about reseting the PMU, Im not going to try this but, what effects does this have on the computer/batt. After the reset do I need to callibrate the battery again, will it shorten the life? Improve the life? As well while im on the topic my mAh is about 6800 for my MBP 17 does this sound right? But I only get about 2 maybe 3 hours of life and this is just using wireless and surfing the web then stopping for a bit and coming back.
Next, I would like to copy some of MY dvds to my ipod video I have found a bunch of free software online to do so but I just dont want to go downloading anything, anyway i can check to make sure the software isnt bugged? Could i download the .dmg file to my PC scan it with norton and then copy it to the mac? On that note does anyone know if handbreak is legitimate?
As well is norton needed or can i get away without, one of the reasons why i got a mac was because i knew it was safer or under the impression i wouldnt really need anti virus and spyware protection.
Thanks,
sorry this is kinda all over the place,
Mike

0. Resetting the PMU will not reset the calibration of your battery; your battery has an internal microcontroller, which is what gets calibrated. The PMU is on your computer's logic/analogue board. It probably won't hurt to recalibrate afterwards, but it is unnecessary.
1. Scanning anything for the Mac with a Windows virus scanner won't detect Macintosh viruses, obviously. In my experience, Windows-based virus scanners won't be able to read the contents of the DMG disk image.
2. HandBrake is fine; I use it myself. Just make sure you get it from the official site.
3. You don't need to get Norton or any other antivirus for OS X at this point. Maybe in the future there will be some more trojans or viruses. The virus risk is remarkably overblown (usually by the antivirus companies); Even under Windows I have only downloaded one infected file in twelve years.

  • Is it safe to use the MBP in closed clamshell mode?

I've connected my MBP to my LCD TV and started to use it as my desktop.
I'm deactivating the main display of the MBP by putting it into sleep mode and moving my mouse, so it wakes the computer up and shows image only in the TV, keeping the main display turned off.
I'm constantly monitoring the temperatures of the MBP with iStat Menus. It seems that the temperature is always the same, no matter if the main display lid is open or closed.
So, based on these 2 articles:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1778
Is it really safe to use the MBP with the display lid closed?
If I decide to run a heavy load application (like a game) and the MBP starts to get warm, would it damage the display, because it is too close to the body of the MBP?

Yes it's perfectly safe and designed to be used that way, 90% of the time this one's used in a similar configuration. The only time the fans come on 100% is when I watch Flash-based items from YouTube or similar. I've never run it for any extended length of time with the fans at maximum I must admit but as long as the air flow is good there shouldn't be any problem.

  • Im making a photo slide show using imovie. how will i make a dvd copy that can play in both pc and dvd player.  i dont have an idvd anymore. m using a mbp early 2011 osx 10.8.5

im making a photo slide show using imovie. how will i make a dvd copy that can play in both pc and dvd player.  i dont have an idvd anymore. m using a mbp early 2011 osx 10.8.5.
after making the photo slide show, i clicked share>export movie.  after which i burned using toast. the file became a .mov.  i tried playing it in my mac and it worked. my fear now is will it also play in a regular dvd?... i read from google that mov files won't run in dvd players.  what format should i convert it to so it'll play in a dvd player.  can you suggest a faster way i can burn my projects for it takes me almost an hour to export.  im going to make 28 slideshows for my kids in school. *=( if i need to do this process 28 times, i may not be able to finish it on time.  please suggest a software or an alternative as to how i should do this... m more comfortable using imovie than iphoto.  thanks and i hope to hear from someone soon *=j

Thank you QuickTimeKirk...used toast to burn project... my project was in .mov, i tried to play it a dvd player, it did play... will try again tomorrow using another dvd player just to be sure it'll will really work with dvd players.  thank you again for your reply *=)

  • Use the MBP as a display

    Two questions:
    1. Is there a way to use a MBP (or even a iMac or just a PC monitor) as a display for an XBox 360 using some sort of cables and converters.
    2. I have an old iMac G5 running Panther and is there a way to just use that as an additional display. (I am already using a secondary)

    Hi,
As far as I know, you need a video-input card (or more commonly known as a TV card) to do this. You might want to have a look at the EyeTV products (http://www.elgato.com/).
Be careful though, there are two kinds of TV cards: one which uses hardware compression, and the other which uses software compression. Software compression uses your computer processor to process the video signals. Hardware compression does the video processing knick-knacks on the TV card hardware, which frees up your computer while usually giving better video quality, especially on older computer systems. However, the downside of hardware compression is the lag time to show the video on your computer monitor, which is a no-no for gaming systems like the XBox360.
    Hope this helps.

  • Trying to watch full screen and still be able to use the MBP Desktop

I have a 2012 MBP currently running OSX Mountain Lion. I have had no issues connecting my MBP to my HDTV, however, when I watch a TV show or movie in Full Screen I am unable to use the MBP desktop. Is this possible, and where can I change the setting, so that I can still access the desktop while using the extended or mirror display with the show on my HDTV?

    Play the movies with VLC.
    <http://www.videolan.org>
In its Video preferences, uncheck "Black screens in Fullscreen mode" and set "Fullscreen Video Device" to your external display.

  • Can I use my MBP while in flight?

Can I use my MBP while flying?
Tech specs say maximum altitude is 10,000 feet - does that mean I cant turn it on at 30,000 feet?

I have used my MacBook Pro at 30,000 feet many times, and I have never had any problems.
Cabins are pressurized at 8,000 feet, so you are well within the limits.

  • CS6 lags when using brushes (MBP, Intuos)

    Hello!
I'm using a MBP (Late 2011, i7, discrete ATI Radeon 6570m) with 16 Gigs of RAM, a 256GB SSD Samsung 830 and a Wacom Intuos5 tablet. My secondary screen is a Dell U2711.
Ps is already updated to 13.0.1
Everytime i use a brush tool (healing, cloning, etc.) the % of cpu usage goes up to 90-140, Temperature goes up to ~80 degrees, fans going to full power.
When i don't stop to use the brush, Ps is freezing for a few seconds (5-30).
Mostly, when i switch to another app (Firefox, etc.) and back to Ps, i can use Ps again.
Is this a known issue or a problem with my hardware (graphics card, tablet, etc.)?

Instead of switching to another program if you use Edit/purge/all does it have the same effect?
Of the 16 gigs how much is dedicated to PS?

  • Using a MBP running OS X Mavericks to access a NAS

    Hi all,
I have an old Buffalo Linkstation LS-GL500 that until today has worked ok. I needed to reboot it and got some error beeps. After hours of web surfing it would I appear I have accidently now put it in to 'EM' mode. After reading up on this it would appear I need to update or 'flash' the firmware. All tutorials on this say it can only be done from a wondows PC which I don't have having made the switch to a MBP.
I am not bothered about getting the LS up and running again as I have ordered a new Synology system, however I want the data off the drive. So my question is how do I get the LS out of EM mode using a MBP or how can i get the data of the drive without sending it away to an expensive recovery company. The drive is not broken as far as I know, it's just locked in EM mode.
    Thanks for any help!

    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The first step on your new computer is to install the latest version of iTunes:

I personally use the option to backup to an external drive first .... because it protects your current library in the event you ever have to install it again.
I use the same external drive to back up my Mac with the Time Machine software built into the operating system.

  • USB portable ext. HD for use with MBP & FCE????

I've seen a 120 GB USB portable external Seagate HD for $117. Would this be usable as a scratch disk for use with my MBP 2.0 and final cut express HD 3.5. Are there problems with using USB externals? FW external hd's seem to be a good deal more expensive.
This may belong in the FCE forum but I thought someone here that uses an MBP might have specific experience with it.
    Thanks.
    Maurice

I use a Seagate 160GB 2.5" 5400 external as mirror/scratch partitions and it works OK however, if I'm capturing at high res I usually write to the internal drive (that's running at 7200) to avoid any frame loss ...

  • Has anyone tried using a MBP with TD at two different sites?

I just got my TD at home and at one at work yesterday.  While I love the display and the docking ability it provides, I have encountered an issue that I haven't resolved, I was wondering if anyone else had noticed this.
At home, the TD is positioned to the left side of the MBP, so I was able to orient the display preferences accordingly.  At work, I have to position the TD above the MBP.  The starting position for the TD is above the MBP. I am wondering if the MBP can recognize that these two TDs are different devices and position them accordingly.  It appears not.
Another interesting quirk:  At home, the MBP recognizes the built-in mic and speakers and calls them Thunderbolt audio, I believe.  At work, it calls them USB audio.  I am wondering what other strange differences I'll see.
    2011 17" MBP
    TD
Snow Leopard (hey, I still run XP under Parallels 6.0 - I like my SW to thoroughly soak before using it)

Here's an update:  The Thunderbold Display user interface is broken.
I made sure all the software/firmware was up to date (now they both label the TD audio as USB, interestingly enough - was the shipped firmware with one of the devices newer than that on the web site???).  On days when the Moon is full, the MBP comes out of hibernation with the only display on the computer, on cloudy days, the computer comes out of hibernation with the only display on the TD.  From 10 minutes after the hour until quarter to the hour, both displays come up, but open Finder windows randomly are placed on one display or the other.  On Thursday mornings, the icon locations on the desktop get shuffled like the display resolution was reduced to VGA and then restored.  While both the TD and MBP audio and camera work and I can set either to be active, the system has a definite preference to use the TD for audio and camera (except that Facetime only wants to use the MBP audio).
Did Apple let Microsoft get their hands on this?

  • Using my MBP for DJing.

    Good day,
I have a MBP C2D and I'm a part time DJ. Most of the time when I'm watching very high-profile DJs on television they're using their Macbook or Macbook Pro when they're DJing. What I would like to know is what are they using it for and how could I do it if I wanted to. I'm still doing it the old fashion way but if I could figure out how to use my MBP for DJing it would be wonderful.

Ableton Live 6 is good, but I find the user interface to be a bit cumbersome and not too exciting. I personally use Native Instruments Traktor 3 and love it! Combine that with the brand new Vestax VCI-100 Professional DJ MIDI Controller and it is absolutely amazing! Goodbye CDJ's or turntables and mixer...hello the next evolution of digital DJ'ing.

  • Nyone using the MBP 13 for music recording?

    Hi all!
Anyone using the MBP 13 for music recording?
I have the late 2008 MBP but is considering the new MBP 13.
I wonder if the MBP 13 can handle Logic pretty well or using it live for VSTs.
    Thanks!!

    Glenn,
I just bought the 2.4 so i shall answer your question from the perspective of a macbook 2.0(1stgen) owner.
I spend almost six months a year gigging in europe.
My "Books" are my life line to creativity.
    My 2.0 had 2gig ram&7200 rpm 100gig HD.
In logic pro the last song recorded had 32 audio tracks, 8 virtual synths, effects on each channel and also effects on the stereo outputs. ALL were recorded on the internal drive. I also carry a 7200 rpm 100 gig SATA 2.5 drive and ext fw800 case. This i bought from owc. I do suggest you replace the 5400 ext&case. The firewire 800 was the #1 reason i bought this new machine. Hope this answers your question, jeff www.jeffreyabbott.com

  • Hello. I've Apple TV 3rd gen and MacBook Pro 2013 all with latest updates. AirPlay works fine till I don't start streaming videos from YouTube. After that AirPlay icon from MacBook menu bar simply disappears. Could some help. I'm using 2 Mbps Internet

Hello. I've Apple TV 3rd gen and MacBook Pro 2013 all with latest updates. AirPlay works fine till I don't start streaming videos from YouTube. After that AirPlay icon from MacBook menu bar simply disappears. Could some help. I'm using 2 Mbps internet connection.

Same issue here- I can airplay my amazon prime library just fine from my iphone 5 but on my macbook- (mavericks, 15 inch 2013 retina with quad core i7, nvidia 650 M and SSD) it just sputters and lags.
I have noticed web video is considerably worse than local content, giving me pauses of up to 2 or 3 seconds in which video stops but audio continues in the amazon player. Youku video, however, seems relatively stable. Our subscription speed is 25 mbps, so that should be plenty to stream SD video from Amazon and doesn't account for why it would be nice and stable from the iphone, but not the mbp.
Playing light, locally hosted steam sidescrollers  like Limbo is better but gives periodic drops in framerate on the Tv. when mirroring the framerate remains steady on the MBP screen.
Games airplayed from my iphone seem relatively stable, though with a noticably lower framerate on the TV than on the phone.
It seems these issues have abated considerably since yesterday's Apple TV update, but are still curious nonetheless and I'm not sure that the update yesterday was specifically meant to address those issues or if I'm just getting a time with less network interference now.
Comcast recently installed a new router/modem/phone combo, replacing our old separate modem and router setup. I'm going to test if putting the network on a different channel helps.

  • I have a mid 2009 13'' MBP. I got the battery replaced in Apple store, It then stopped displaying the battery status LED. After some months of use my MBP died. I got it checked in Apple verfied Service centre and was told that logic board was to blame

I have a mid 2009 13'' MBP. I got the battery replaced in Apple store, It then stopped displaying the battery status LED.
After some months of use my MBP died outside USA. I got it checked in Apple verfied Service centre and was told that logic board was faulty.
After I came back to US I took my MBP to Apple store and was told that there is liquid damage in the system. My question is that if there was liquid damage why did my MBP stop displaying the battery status right after  the battery was changed secondly why didnt the apple verified Service centre tell me that there was liquid damage afterall I paid them the money for diagnosing the problem.
Is there a process i can followup on this problem

These are question you would need to ask that service center.
