Using my new Firewire drive

I just bought a miniStak V2 by Newer Technology. While the instructions for hooking it to my eMac were simple and straightoforward, nowhere can I find any information in the thin "manual" to learn how to use this device.
I purchased it to be able to back up files and apps and in case of emergency, boot from the miniStak. So, excuse my ignorance as I fumble through some basic questions.
When installing the software that came with the unit to back up files, do I insall that on the eMac HD or on the miniStak? There is also some disk tools, where is best to install that?
Can I install the version of OSX (10.3.9) that I am running on the miniStak? Can I then boot from the miniStak in case of emergency, or do I need to purchase SuperDuper (although I don't know how I will download it with this +%@# dialup...)?
Can I just drag apps and files from my eMac's HD (like iMovie and iTunes) and use those apps from the miniStak? Can I then delete the app and files from the eMac HD in order to free disk spaace?
Or, is there a complicated process I must follow?
Sorry for the questions, but the OWC Tech site did not contain much info about how to use the device, only how to troubleshoot problems.

Install the Data Backup program on your internal HD. Then when you make a backup to the external drive, the program will be there as well. Assuming the backup it makes is bootable, if you have a problem with your internal drive you can boot from the external drive and use Data Backup (executed from the external) to restore it.
BTW, I stopped using third party backup programs a while ago; I just use Disk Utility to do my backups. It's entirely a manual process (i.e. you can't schedule backups or incremental saves), but it works well for me and has be rock solid reliable where some of the other apps I tried occasionally failed to complete the backup.

  • Transfering everything to new firewire drive

Hi, I have an old crt imac upon which I intend to use a new firewire drive to run osX. currently i have the imac networked to a mac mini with another firewire harddrive, the old harddrive has everything set up the way I want it as far as programs, defualts, permissions, ect.. Would hooking the old firewire drive to imac under firewire target disk mode, hooking up the new firewire drive in a daisy chain, permit me to simply copy the entire drive onto the new firewire drive?

    Hello,
There is no need to use FireWire Target Disk Mode in this situation.
Since you are simply wanting to duplicate what is on one hard drive to the new FireWire drive, just plug the new FireWire drive into the machine with the drive you wish to duplicate.
If that machine already has all it's FireWire ports occupied, then just plug the new drive into the second port that is provided on your other drive.
Once the drive is connected to the computer, you can simply copy the original hard drive to your new hard drive.
You can use a program such as Carbon Copy Cloner to make an exact "Clone" or duplicate of the original drive.
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
Once the new drive has everything on it that you want, just disconnect it from the computer and plug it into the computer you wish to use it with.
    I hope this helps.

Just edited 20 film in FCPx all about 6 mins long all on 1 x 250gb flash drive
Now i have another 10 to do but have no room on that drive.
So i have been using my new 2tb drive to do the next 10 films with the footage on that drive, but i need elements from the first 20 films ie; graphics, common film elements etc to be added to the new 10 films.
So I have copied all the footage, events and project folders from the 20 edited films over to my 2tb drive in a separate folder - ejected the 250gb drive (as i only have 2 thunderbolt slots and one is used for a 27 inch monitor on my macbook pro)
.......my question is how do i load all of the 20 films into my project library so i can see all of the 30 films at once so i can copy and paste form one film to another - is this possible? and withlout messing up lol

// any reason, why you color your post to 'invisible' low contrasted colors?? //
    I'm confused:
by concept, there's Events and there's Projects.
Events and Projects can be internal or on any ext. drive.
You can use any Event in any Project.
… so, why is the 'location' of your files on any relevance for your Projects ??
    Or, do you want to re-import done-Projects as 'Events'? Export,Import, done… (??)
… sorry, maybe I'm just lost intranslation

  • Use of new external drive

I just bought an external dual-layer burner (with a firewire connection) and have it hooked up to my eMac, which has an internal single-layer superdrive. I want to burn dual-layer DVDs using this new drive, but I can't find anything in the DVD Studio Pro menus (or manual) that tells me how I can bypass the internal drive in favor of the new external one.
Did I just waste my money on the new drive?

    Welcome to the boards.
When you go to the build and format dialog, is the drive showing up in DVD SP as a device (should be in the pulldown at the bottom)? If so, you should be good to go (althouth there are other ways also of burning.) Just build the project and format to the drive (making sure you have everything else set properly for a DL disc, such as layer breaks)

  • How to delete a photo album from iPhone using a new hard drive & a later version of iTunes

I'm using the same computer but with a new hard drive and a later version of iTunes. I previously loaded a photo folder from my PC to my iPhone, but I inadvertently did it twice, giving each folder a different name -- "Photo Library," and "Widget Photo Folder." Of course, I also have the "Camera Roll" folder on my iPhone. I now want to delete either the "Photo Library" or the "Widget Photo Folder" from my iPhone. On iTunes in the Photo tab, I don't have the option of deselecting the folder in my PC that I previously synced. Apparently, iTunes recognizes that the privious sync was not done with the new hard drive? How, then, do I remove one of the photo folders from the iPhone?

You CANNOT delete photo album.  ALL pics synced to iphone are oin photo library.  Those exact same photos, NOT duplicates, can be accessed from the individual albums.
This is how Apple handles photos.
Just as a song is in a playlist and in the library ( there is only one song, simply two ways to access it), photos are in the library and the same photos can be accessed from the album.

  • Audio cutting out when using D2 external Firewire Drive

    Hi,
I have just upgraded to Logic Studio, using the following setup:
    Macbook Pro
    Motu 828
    AMT 8
    Logic Studio
    D2 Lacie 500GB Firewire Drive
As the MacBook's internal hard drive is not sufficient to record and playpack efficiently, I was advised to get an external Firewire Drive. Given that I have very little space on my laptop - (am running windows on a partition also) I am trying to save my logic files to the external HD. When creating tracks specifically using Audio Instruments, the playpack keeps cutting out.
I am connecting the HD via usb 2. I am also having to freeze the tracks in order to record more layers. There is lots of clipping and latency. I thought by using the external, this problem would be resolved.
The HD is not playing back the tracks fast enough, and keeps cutting the audio out. The audio cuts out everytime the blue light on the drive flashes.
I cannot save the files to the MackBook HD as there is notenough space.
Is there something very wrong with my setup?
any advice would be really appreciated.
ps. I am a bit of a newbie
    thank you in advance.

Connect it via firewire 800. USB2 is not good for audio or video streaming.
I have 3 D2's connected to my mac pro, works like a charm.
    good luck.

  • Need Advice On Using A New Firewire Enclosure

Just bought an external Firewire enclosure. I'll install either a Maxtor 250G HD or the original/shipped Quantum 20G in the enclosure.
I'd appreciate advice on when and when not to turn on or unplug the enclosure, OS installation, etc, etc. Will it show in Startup Disk Prefs and just boot to it when chosen? The Quantum has been my backup HD but it's corrupted at the moment and needs to be erased. It's a toss-up on which will be ext and which will be int. I'd like to utilize the capacity of the Maxtor, but I'm loath to use the Quantum as my 'main' OS drive. Thoughts?
And just some basic tips on using external enclosures would be most welcome!

do not ever hot swap firewire devices, ever. basically, put your harddrive in the enclosure, make the connections and then turn it on. use disk utility to format the drive, no matter what it is, even if it's fresh outta the box and claims to already be mac formatted. do that and it should mount automatically. when you want to turn off the drive, always always always eject it from the desktop (command-E) and then you can safely turn it off and unplug. when you want to remount it, plug it in if unplugged, turn on the enclosure and it'll mount on the desktop automatically.
i buy bare drives and stick them enclosures from OWC and i always follow these procedures and they've never let me down with so much as a hiccup. good luck.

  • After using my new firewire audio interface, my devices get electrostatic

I recently bought a Focusrite Saffire 24DSP which is connected by a firewire cable to my macbook pro (late 2010). I connect it as stated with my macbook of. Now there are moments (and unfortunately they are moment of surprise) that my macbook's case get all electrostatic. Not just a little bit but one that makes your hair rises. Also at that same moment the case of the Focusrite audio interface is also all static, also the back of my audio monitors/speakers (which is connected by xlr-cable to this audio interface), these last two devices are the worse, and even in some cases the metal case of my Novation Remote SL keyboard which is connected by usb to my macbook. You can understand that I sometimes getting nervous to touch anything once the audio interface is powered on... or at the end of my session to power my stuff off.
I first thought that connecting the audio interface to its own wall socket/adapter, instead of using it by powered from the firewire, would solve it, but not.
Even this morning, after powering off everything last night (though the firewire cable still connected), i got a shock when opening my macbook and 5min. later touching the audio interface. How can I resolve this? Is it a problem of my new interface, is it a firewire problem? or is it the macbook? ......
Would it help to put the audio interface on rubber feets.. or should I take care in what order I put devices on and off? Please any help or suggestions, since waking up this way is a terrible one

  • Windows 2008 Cluster question on using a new cluster drive source from shrinking existing disk

I have a two node Windows 2008 R2 enterprise SP1 cluster. It has a basic cluster setup of one (Q:)quorum disk and data disk (E:) which is 2.7tb is size. This cluster is connected to a shared Dell Disk array.
My question is can I safely shrink the 2.7tb drive down and carve out a disk size of 500gb from the same disk and use for a new cluster disk resource. We want to install Globalscape SFTP software on this new disk for use as a cluster resource.
Will this work without crashing the cluster.

  • Using a new external drive

I have new WD external drive. What must I do before using it.
    Thanks!

As far as Time Machine, it for backup. You can read about it here...
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/what-is-macosx/time-machine.html
You should always have a backup, so I suggest you either use SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner for your backups, or begin using TM.

  • New Firewire drive - how to hookup to G4 Dual 500 (with Firewire 400)

I know that I need some sort of converter cable ... but there are tons of them, with varying pins and male and female ...
I need to do this to backup files in order to have backup and move them to a Mac I will buy when I have the files moved.
This is an old Mac that won't let me update to Snow Leopard if that helps.

Hmmm, must be looking at the wrong port, the FW/400 port is this shape...
    The FW/800 is this shape...
Is that what the cable ends look like?
You should have 2 FW/400 ports...

  • Can't properly open fcp6 project on firewire drive on another computer

I have a long and complex fcp6 project that I have been editing with fcp6 on my piwermac g5 quad running leopard. The media and render files are each split between my boot drive and a second internal drive. I copy both drives onto a partitioned FireWire drive and then plug it into my macpro 3.1. The names on the FireWire partitions are exactly the same as the powermac drive names. The project opens perfectly on the 8 core macpro from the FireWire drive and I am able to render and other things much faster . However, I am about to outgrow the 1TB FireWire drive, so I got a larger one. I duped both partitions onto the similarly partitioned and identically named new bigger firewire drive....but when I go to open the project half the media filess are disconnected and even after I manually reconnect all kinds of error messages come up and the project is totally unworkable. So, why does the first firewiure drive work perfect but not the cloned nee FireWire drive? I even put an extra internal drive in the macpro and cloned the original FireWire to it but it does the same thing as the new FireWire, totally unworkable. I don't understand why things work perfectly with first FireWire but not with any other internal or external drive.  Any help would be tremendously appreciated.

The original fiteewire which does open on the mac pro was partitioned apple partition map.  The new FireWire drive that doesn't open properly is also apm, but I've erased and partitioned i GUID.  I've tried using both disk utilities and superduper for the cloning in the past.  I'm doing the cloning onto the guid partitions right now and will let you know if it helps in the morning.  At any rate I appreciate your help.

  • Using an external hard drive for music

Hi. I'm quite sure the answer to this question is obvious--I just don't know a lot about external hard drives.
I have a MBP, but I'm running low on memory. The majority is being used on my huge music collection. If I were to purchase an external hard drive and put all my music files on it, would I still be able to access them in the same way?
In other words, as long as the external hard drive is hooked up to my computer, will I be able to play them in iTunes?
I just want to remove all the music from my computer's hard drive, and place them on an external hard drive. But, I'm not quite sure if this is possible.
    Thanks!

I use an external firewire drive to store my iTunes library on. One thing to be aware of...
You need to go into your iTunes preferences, then to "Advanced", then select the location where you want to store your iTunes Music folder. In my case it is in a folder titled "Music" on my external firewire drive. The iTunes "Library" file is stored on your internal hard drive.
The thing that can cause you problems it that....if you forget to turn on the external drive before you boot up your Mac, the iTunes library file will look for your music folder and won't be able to find it. So a new iTunes Music folder will be created on your internal hard drive, with nothing in it. You'll see all of your songs listed in your iTunes program...but if you try to double click on any of the songs to play them, you'll get an exclamation mark saying "cannot find file".
If this happens, you need to delete the new iTunes Music folder on your internal drive (but not the iTunes Library file!), then quit iTunes, turn on the external drive, then relaunch iTunes....and it will find the original music folder.
It's a hassle that I have had to go though many times, I keep forgetting to turn on that drive before launching iTunes.
Oh, one other thing....about the way you worded your post. You aren't running short on "memory", you are running short on "storage"....they are two different things. Hard drives are storage, RAM chips are "memory" that run your programs.

  • Firewire drives not working in Audition 3

We have Audition v3 installed on some XP machines.  We've recently switched out our external USB CD drives and installed new firewire drives and are now unable to use the 'extract audio from CD' option.  The drive shows up in the list of drives but when selected everything in the window is greyed out.
The drive is an Other World Computing Mercury Pro Blu-ray drive.

I was thinking the drive might be the culprit because it's a Mac drive on a PC system.  I tried a PC dvd drive via firewire though and it behaved the same way so it must be Audition having a problem with firewire.
I tried going from XP SP 2 to 3, tried applying the Audition v 3.0.1 patch and tried installing the latest Adaptec ASPI driver upgrades.  I tried going into edit>preferences and switching between using ASPI or SPTI and neither worked.
I'm out of ideas.  It seems strange that in Audition I can open up the disc and see the tracks but it won't let me import the audio in.

  • Do i have to have a firewire drive to hold snow leopard

i plan on updating to lion.  presently i have snow leopard and am using a 250gb firewire drive as my backup.  rather than to go thru the partitioning process, i'll probably purchase an additional external drive to serve as backup and keep the drive filled with snow leopard when i want to boot it.
vice versa, i may want to transfer snow leopard to a 1tb usb drive i already have, and boot it when i need snow leopard.  thus, i would use the former snow leopard backup firewire drive as the new lion backup drive.  whew!
any suggestions as to whether or not usb would be ok?
    thanks,

lanny, not quite sure of your question but i believe this answers it:  4 usb 2.0 ports and a firewire 800 port.  also have a combination usb/firewire hub.
drives are firewire 400(with adapter cable for 800) and usb 2.
