Using my playbook overseas

Just a quick question here.  My daughter took my blackberry playbook with her on her trip to the UK since it's so much less bulky than her laptop.  She has an adapter for the power plugs there, was having huge issues with it charging, and finally after much hassle managed to get it to charge.  Now however, it's crapped out completely, not because the battery is dead but it just quit working entirely.  Is this because it's being charged using a power converter for UK to North America power?

No.
The Playbook has a built-in power converter so all that doesn't matter.
What crapped out?
What's not working?

  • Using a MacBook overseas

I am thinking of purchasing a MacBook. Never owned a laptop before.
I may be using the MacBook overseas as well to do some work. Is it easy to do wireless connection to the Internet at an Internet cafe or hotel or private home with a MacBook? I somehow got the impression using a Mac at a hotspot might be more complicated than using a PC...
Obviously, I don't know enough about wireless technology yet. I have an eMac and DSL at home currently. I know I'll need to upgrade soon, so thought about getting a laptop.
    Thanks.

I also am worried about accessing any financial accounts I have, or any account for that matter (even e-mail), via wireless Internet connection from outside the U.S. How safe is it?
What kind of measures do people take to ensure secure access? Do you even dare access your bank or credit card account via the Internet when you're outside of the country (using wireless or not)?

  • Can i use my playbook as a GPS without wifi niether bridge connection?

can i use my playbook as a GPS without wifi niether bridge connection?
    please help me!!!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

@vanawful, the GPS capability comes from the TI WiLink 7 chip (WL-1283) that provides all the wireless capabilities for the WiFi-only PlayBook.
Although the jury's still out on whether different units may behave differently, so far it appears likely every unit *can* work, under the right conditions, but problems in the software (OS level) or possibly in the chip itself (nobody's saying yet) mean that it's quite unreliable.
There is no need to have WiFi enabled for it, and I've used the GPS frequently now with WiFi off and no nearby hotspots, no tethering (I don't even have a smartphone), and just the GPS running.
If you pick a clear day (i.e. no big rain clouds off to the south, etc), are out in the open without buildings or other things blocking the view of the sky, make certain you are not covering up the lower-right corner of the PlayBook where it appears the GPS antenna is, run the Compass app, and let it sit for 5-10 minutes (if this is your first time using it) so it can find and download ephemeris data from each satellite, you should see it start reporting lat/long positions after that.
If you do this, and it doesn't work, try again. Then try again. Maybe try another time. Preferably do this on different days too, and possibly after a reboot. Yes, it appears to be that flaky sometimes...
I've written my own GPS recording app (no fancy map... just records the readings) and done numerous tests at this point. The readings, when they arrive, are generally exceptionally good. The main problem is getting them to actually arrive and, so far, I've found nothing that can force the issue. Even with my own app, I sometimes have to start it up and leave it alone for some minutes, 4-5 times, before I get the first reading, and there are days I've just given up and moved on. The next day it will simply work. It's largely random.
The three single biggest things you need to remember to get any readings: be outdoors away from big buildings, don't pick a heavily overcast day, and do NOT hold the unit with your right hand covering the bottom right corner (when held in the default landscape orientation with the cameras on top, that is).

  • I am currently using an ipad overseas to put photos to icloud whilst travelling.  If I lose the ipad will i still be able to access the photos given I don´t have another mac device (but could use someone elses)? Thanks

I am currently using an ipad overseas with the hope that I can backup photos to icloud in case I lose the camera and ipad.  I don´t have another mac device but could use my girlfriends when I get home. Would it be possible to access my photos on her macbook using my icloud?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Assuming you are logged into your iCloud account and have enabled photo stream on your device, then any photos you take on your iPad will be added to photo stream and can be shared to any device that is logged into the same iCloud account.
If while away, you lose your iPad, then upon your return you would need to log into your iCloud account on your girlfriend's computer and enable photostream, by doing this you would then be able to download all the photos you added to photo stream whilst you were away.

  • HT4528 I receive a 4s after been use for 2 years in the verizon network and the customer upgrade to a 5.I will like to use the phone overseas but I do not use Verizon.

I receive a 4s after been use for 2 years in the verizon network and the customer upgrade to a 5. I will like to use the phone overseas but I do not use Verizon, how I can get this phone legally unlocked without having to add service because I'm with Sprint under a contract?
I can get the prior  owner of the phone info if you nedd to contac her to verify, just let me know thank you.
If the phone was used in the Verizon network for 2 years, is that not enough time to get the phone unlocked?

I have sprint phone and service without simcard, Sprint and Verizon use CDMA. But if I can get the Verizon iPhone 4S unlocked, I can use it let's said in the caribean, canada, europe etc.,  with a local simcard from the service provider and country that I visit . No to be use here in USA with Sprint or Verizon, only to be use with GSM-Simcard when I travel out of USA.

  • Using my BlackBerry Overseas

I'm going to Europe this summer for a few months and I was wondering how reliable blackberry messenger is overseas. Can I use it to talk to my other traveling friends while we're over there without a SIM card or do I need to get a card or something before we go? I'm also curious about internet access. Are there any browsers that I can use over there without a SIM card and still get access? I'm not interested in placing calls just using data, what are my best and more affordable options?

    No.
The Playbook has a built-in power converter so all that doesn't matter.

  • "Unable to Open" PDF attachment using BlackBerry PlayBook when message is received from Exchange 03

    Hello,
Recently I have found that some users are having an issue with opening PDF attachments on the BlackBerry PlayBook using their Exchange 2003 accounts.
I have isolated the issued to only users on Exchange 2003 using activesync.
To resolve/workaround you can select and hold the attachment until you have the option to "Open" or "Save As". Select "Save As" and rename the attachment to the same name but include .pdf at the end of the file name. This allow the attachment to open in Adobe and show the PDF document in the email message correctly.
Messages where being recieved as .null attachments with same file name but no extension.
    Hope this helps anyone.

  • I travel Alot and want to use my iphone overseas

I have been with Cingular/ATT for the last 4 years. I jsut bought my iphone because I do enjoy the use of safari while I'm on the run, since I run an ecommerce company. I have heard that we can not unlock our iphones if we go overseas, is this true? My Nokia's were unlocked, basically every time I travelled which ever company was the manufacturer, I would request a code and I would get it. So are we basically just stuck using the phone in the US, and get bent over on roaming charges and long distance when we travel? What about the people who are in the country I'm visiting they would need to call Boise, Idaho, to get a hold of me. What if I met a hot chick and she wasnts my number, then what, I gotta ask her to call me in the USA? Thats kind of silly, I'm hoping there is a way to unlock the phone, otherwise, I wont be using it for 50% of the time. Someone let me know please if we can unlock our iphones.

That's what I do. I don't want to lose my accessibility so I carry the iPhone and a cheap no-name GSM phone that I use with local prepaid SIM cards. People calling my number reach me while traveling, but I don't have to run up huge bills making local calls where I am temporarily located.
You can also purchase 20 MB and 50 MB per month roaming data packages from AT&T so you can use the data features traveling.

  • Using my Powerbook Overseas

I will be studying in the UK for about a year. I purchased the Apple travel adapters, but I am unsure whether it is still safe to plug my Powerbook into the wall with only the adapter. Does anyone have any knowledge in this area? Can the powerblock permit the amount of voltage in the UK?

Here is what is in an Apple knowledge base article:
Question 15: I will be travelling overseas and will be taking my PowerBook computer with me. Which adapters do I need for the power and modem?
Answer: The PowerBook computers can use 115 V and 230 V AC. You will need a power prong adaptor available at many electronic and travel retailers. Review the following technical document for more details. Document 129: "World Power Differences Can Limit International Product Usage"
It looks as if will work just fine with the adapters.

  • Can / will  Apple Unlock my iPhone 4 for use with an overseas SIM card?

I have purchased a second hand iPhone 4 which I want to use when I travel overseas using a local SIM card, will my local Apple store be happy to block it so that I can do that or do I need to find a third party unlocking company? I would rather do it through the manufacturer but I am not sure whether this is allowed or not?

If you have purchased the iPhone from someone else and you intend to use it on a differing network the ORIGINAL OWNER MUST DO THE UNLOCK BEFORE SALE as the phone iMEi number is tied to that account and network.
The system is the registered user contacts their Mobile operator confirms iMEI number and pays appropriate fee.
That Mobile operator submits the iMEi number to Apple.
Apple white list iMEi number on their iTunes server and confirms this back to Mobile operator.
The Mobile operator sends the registered user an sms/e-mail inviting them to sync phone via USB cable to their ITunes account.
Registered user follows on screen prompts (With registered sim onboard) until they see the “Congrat's .........” message
The registered sim can now be removed and replaced it with a sim from another supported network.
Caveat with some of the Virtual networks such as Giff-gaff /Virgin/Lebara etc........ you may have difficulty getting SMS/MMS to send due to the APN settings being wrong (They default to the actual network sighted).
Some of those Sims may give you access to a hidden menu feature that allows you to set the correct APN manually however others don't.
Those that don't may mean you only receive SMS/MMS messages.

  • Using BB Playbook with OS X Server CalDav

    Hi
Have OSX server (all updates installed) running, mainly for Wiki and Filesharing access.
Added a Calendar so to use Free / Busy times, resources / locations, etc.  Works fine on iPhone & iPad, and OS X (MacBook) but I'm trying to link a user that has a BB Playbook.
In the Accounts section of the BB PB I use Advanced Setup to select a CalDav account.  Where this differs from the iOS / OSX devices is that I'm asked for an email address.  So I enter the users registered email address, all other details as per the iOS devices - but it comes back with that either the server is offline or the settings are incorrect.
Has anyone any advice on how to get round this issue?
    Thanks
    Ian

    Thanks,
What I can see from the error logs is:
09:10:29+0000 [Uninitialized] [twistedcaldav.mail.IMAP4DownloadFactory#error] IMAP factory connection failed
    2012-12-11 09:10:59+0000 [-] [mailgateway] 2012-12-11 09:10:59+0000 [Uninitialized] [twistedcaldav.mail.IMAP4DownloadFactory#error] IMAP factory connection failed
    2012-12-11 09:11:29+0000 [-] [mailgateway] 2012-12-11 09:11:29+0000 [Uninitialized] [twistedcaldav.mail.IMAP4DownloadFactory#error] IMAP factory connection failed
The only things in the access logs are succesful iOS actions.
My server is a Mac Mini running OSX Server.  It uses a no-ip redirect, which doesn't prove a problem for the iOS / OSX devices.  I have tried accessing via IP address whilst on the LAN as well.
The setup is such that I am only running Wiki, file sharing and Time Machine.  I added calendar so that we could share events and see what we are all doing without the need to permanently share our iOS / OSX calendars.

  • Using Prepaid Freedom overseas

Could someone please clarify Prepaid Freedom use whilst overseas. I am currently a postpaid user but thinking of switching as for same cost i would get more call allowance and way more data on prepaid. But i dont understand if/how i can use phone overseas. On that prepaid Freedom plan, what charges would i be expecting if i took it overseas and made a call to an Australia mobile number, or a SMS?Also, can i keep my postpaid number when i change to prepaid (both Telstra)? Thanks

Last question first Does, yes youi can retain your number. I'd suggest that you pop onmto the following link, it offers a comprehensive summary of everything associated with the pre-paid Freedom plan and use, rates etc. both in Australia and overseas: https://www.telstra.com.au/content/dam/tcom/personal/help/pdf/cis-personal/mobile/personal-critical-information-summary-tpp-mobile-summary.pdf

  • Using my phone overseas

I am currently in England for the holidays, and I cannot get any service. I added Global/International  usage to my account when I bought the phone back in January. I specifically bought this model because I travel quite often. I was told (at the time) this would be the best phone for traveling.
I have the Motorola Droid Global 2 phone. I went into the settings and clicked on "Global"  I see from one of the posts that I was supposed to dial *622 BEFORE I left the US. I didn't do this, so I cannot dial it now as I have no service.
How can I now get my phone to work overseas if I cannot dial the number??

You generally need to call the International Service team to have your SIM card activated for global roaming before you can use it overseas.  They have an international contact number that you can find under "Contact Us."  If your phone needs any programming, they should be able to walk you through it manually.
