Using my USA 17" intel mac in Japan?

Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with bringing an US purchased intelmac up to Japan. I've read some forums saying that I don't need a converter. Some people and sites say that Japan's plugs are equal size holes (versus one big and one small), so I have to buy an adaptor.
I've researched a bit but just wanted more info so I don't have any suprizes once I make the move.

It looks like Japan uses the same kind of power plug, however I'm not sure if the iMac can switch down to 100V.
the Frequency may vary though, they say 50/60 hz on there.

Using MS UAM with Intel Macs and Tiger (10.4.6+)

I oversee 50 macs in a server environment. The servers are windows server 2003. About 40 of the macs are able to change their network password via the MS UAM. The remaining macs are intel 10.4.6 and above or intel leopard machines.
Goal: The ability of intel mac users running 10.4.6 and above (leo too) to change their network password.
Let me be clear about the problem.
I have no problem connecting to any share / volume on any server. All file sharing is working properly. The only problem I have is that my users cannot change their password that the network requires for authentication. So, when the password expires, they have to go to a windows machine or use a non-Intel Mac. (I am not 100% sure, but I think this is also happening on 10.4.6+ PPC Mac's...correct me if I'm wrong)
Searching for a solution to this problem was unsuccessful. I found that there is no easy way to get the mac os to use the MS UAM instead of the OS X standard UAM's.
I came across a couple of articles from 2006 (two years ago) that stated there was no fix for this problem, but that apple was working on it. I am starting this thread to renew the subject matter. Does anyone know of a fix for this problem yet? Has Apple stated awareness that the problem exists? Has Apple stated that a fix is in the works?

We have the same problem here --- a high school of mostly Mac clients and only Window Servers.
Hate to think that everyone has to be funneled to an older Mac or a PC in order to do password changes.

Using Windows Peripherals on Intel Mac running windows

Is there any resources online listing compatible USD peripherals while running Windows on an Intel based MAC.
I am about to finally migrate completely to MAC with purchase of a MAC mini to replace my old Tosh laptop. In the past year I have managed to minimise the use of this laptop. Its only function now is to run SKYPE with my Linksys CIT200 cordless skype phone.
Antyone know if I can run windows on an Intel MAC mini and successfully load up the driver for this phone?

As the title - What 32inch plus tv to buy in the UK to use with 1.83 intel Mac mini. It does not have to have freeview as I will be using tubestick. I do want to use the hdmi connection. Who's got a great setup, with no issues - model numbers appreciated £1200 ish budget

So everything is working normal except for screen saver? Hmm. That's odd. Perhaps your settings are such that shortly after the screen saver kicks in the mini is also set to go to sleep. That would cause the screen to lose sync and give the "no signal" message. Check your Energy Saver against the Screen Saver settings and adjust the sleep interval if need be.
FYI, running a screen saver on an LCD TV is not a good idea long term. An LCD uses a lamp as a backlight, and the lamp has a finite lifetime. Consuming it's limited hours of life by running a screen saver all the time (like overnight, everynight) will shorten considerably the service life of your TV.

PC Viruses on Intel Macs?

as far as i understand, you can use Windows on new Intel Macs. hence, i was wondering whether viruses that normally attack PCs could also affect a Mac? so far, i've never used any virus protection for my Mac and never had a virus problem. will this no longer be the case if i purchase an Intel Mac and operate it in the Windows regime?

the Windows side can't affect the Mac side, so your Windows could be crippled with viruses, malware, trojans, worms, auto-dialers and whatever crap you can put your hands on, , you still would be ok in OS X.

ARD, Leopard and Intel Macs

I can't get ARD to load on my intel mac. Works fine on a power pc mac but not on an intel. I am using the latest version of ARD. Is anyone using ARD with an intel Mac?

Many people are.
Did you migrate your ARD install from a PPC machine to the Intel machine? This is known to cause problems. Your best bet is to remove all of the various plist files and, effectively, start clean.

Does Waveburner work on Intel Macs?

I see that Waveburner is not a Universal app. Does it run reliably under Rosetta?

I've been using waveburner on my intel mac for the past 4 months with no adverse issues. works fine. no speed issues at all.
In fact I wasn't aware it's not universal binary. Are you sure it's not a UB? I just checked the app and i can't see any way to open it under rosetta.

I have OSX 10.5.7 on my Intel Mac. When I try to login using the correct password the screen goes white and just returns back to the login screen. It does not jiggle like when you enter the wrong password.

I have had a number of issues with my Intel Mac recently and had to reboot using disk utilities, safe mode, OSX recovery, but always come back to the login screen but when I type my password the screen goes white and returns to the login screen. My password is correct and the login does not jiggle as it would if the password was wrong. Please advise,

Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. There are ways to back up, even if you can’t log in. Before proceeding,you must be sure you can restore everything to the state it’s in now. If you’re not sure you can do that, STOP.
The procedure below may spare you the need for a clean reinstallation of OS X. If you don't feel comfortable carrying it out, don't. try.
Briefly, you need to delete the following file:
/var/audit/current
If you already know how to do that, you can skip the rest of this message. Do it, and try again to log in.
Boot in single-user mode by holding down the key combination command-S at the startup chime. If you’re using an external USB keyboard, it must be plugged directly into a built-in port on the Mac, not into a hub. Release the keys when you see a black screen with scrolling white text. In this mode, there’s no graphical interface; just a command line. Initially, you can’t make any changes to files.
When the text stops scrolling, and you see a line ending in a pound sign (“#”), type the following command:
mount -uw /
You must type the command exactly as given, with no mistakes. If you don’t feel able to do that, STOP. At this stage, no harm will be done if you make a mistake, but later, it will be. Press the return key.
Next, type the following command:
rm -i /var/audit/current
Press return. You should get the following output:
remove /var/audit/current?
If that's not what you get, STOP. Type the single letter N, press return, and try again. Otherwise, type the single letter Y and pressreturn.
Finally, enter the command:
exit
Press return. The text will start scrolling again, and then the system will reboot. Try again to log in.

Can I use OS9 as the start up disk on my Intel Mac?

I have a new Intel iMac. I want to partition my hard drive, install OS9 and run the old system. I know I can't use "classic" on 10.4.7 but I wonder if I could simply install OS9 and reboot my computer. I don't need to move between the two, meaning I don't need to work in OS9 then instantly click and be in 10.4.7. I can deal with the inconvenience of rebooting.
I'm having 3 problems
#1, I have an old version of Photoshop. I'll buy the newest Photoshop someday but the latest version wasn't made for Intel Macs and it is very expensive. $600. I wonder if it runs slow on Intel Macs. Maybe I should wait for the next version.
#2 I have a great Epson printer (875 DC) but Epson has not updated the print drivers for this model and probably won't. OK fine I can buy a newer better photo printer $550.
#3 I have a "Nikon Coolscan 4000" film Scanner $1,300. This scanner is great in OS9 but the thing never worked in OS10 and now that I have this Intel iMac I downloaded the latest software update and the thing still doesn’t work and if the computer sleeps while the Nikon software is open it won't wake up and I have to restart.
To sum everything up, can I run OS9 on my Intel iMac? I don't care if I have to work in OS9 then shut down and restart to work in 10.4.7 Can this Intel iMac understand OS9. If I try to restart using OS9 as the startup disk will I damage the computer? Will I screw things up and have to spend hours and days removing files and correcting problems?
I feel like this computer is a fresh clean new baby and I'm afraid that if I start messing around with it I'll regret it.

The problem here, is that the OS 9 environment / Operating System will only run on a PowerPC processor.
The only reason that OS X will run on either processor, is that it was specifically designed to do so from the beginning.
But, OS 9 and older were specifically written for the PowerPC / Motorola processors.
So, you will need a machine with a PowerPC processor to run OS 9.
Currently, there is one program that will enable OS 9 to run on an Intel Mac. But, it requires making a copy of the Power Macintosh ROM. So, it's legal use is questionable at best.

This program works by emulating the PowerPC processor. And, it is reported to operate at roughly 1/8-th of native speeds. So, it could be pretty slow for productive photo work.

If it is a Mac OS X version, then it will run on the Intel systems. But, yes it will be slower. Usable, but slower.
I haven't tried this program, so I cannot personally comment on it. But, even Steve Jobs admitted it was slow on the Intel Macs.

OS X comes with drivers for the Epson Stylus Photo 875. They are provided by the Gimp-Print layer. But, installed / select just like any other printer. So, as long as you can connect the printer using USB, then you can select the driver for the 875 and be fine (as long as this is the same printer).
Otherwise, some people have reportedly installed PowerPC print drivers without trouble. I haven't tried it myself.

As mentioned above, the only method currently available to use OS 9 on an Intel system is that SheepShaver program.
But, I would not expect good results with it for your uses. And, it's legal status would be questionable since you need to copy a ROM file from another Mac to use it (which goes against Apple's license agreement).
I feel like this computer is a fresh clean new baby
and I'm afraid that if I start messing around with it
I'll regret it.
Just make sure you have a good backup of everything before you start experimenting.

No. There is no "USB Target Disk Mode".
Just so we're clear, when you start your Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode (TDM - holding T on startup), do you see a FireWire icon on the Mac mini's display? IIRC, it's not required that the Mac mini be connected to a display for TDM, but it would help diagnose whether or not the mini is actually starting in this mode.

Using External Boot Drive with New Intel Mac Mini

I have a 1st Gen MacMini and use an external 7200 RPM Lacie drive as the system boot drive along with all the applications.
If I were to purchase a new Intel Mac Mini, is it possible to use the current external drive as the system drive or is there some conversion steps that would be necessary ?

You can use the hardware, but will have to repartition and reinstall the OS from the disk shipped with the new Mac Mini.

If you create a disk image of the Lacie on your Mini, you can later use setup assistant to restore users and applications from that image.

HT5271 What's the best Flash player to use with a (pre-Intel) G5 Mac OS 10.5.8 using Safari 5.0.6?

I'm using my wife's old G5 running OS 10.5.8 and Safari 5.0.6. Being denied access to streaming video sites like Netflix because of out-of-date flash player. Is there any newer iteration I could download that wouldn't be counterproductive (by disabling what does work now on Hulu and YouTube, etc). I gather that Adobe may have jettisoned the non-Intel Macs. I can't even find the specs on this G5's player. It doesn't show up as a plug-in on System Preferences' Network list, as it does on my MacBook Pro. Any options you can suggest would be appreciated. Thanks.

Clarisworks, you need Appleworks, which will only work with Mac OS X10.6.8 or earlier. See this tip if you must go newer. Mac Pros with newer hardware configuration than July 20, 2011 can't use Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier without this tip and then it would be Mac OS X Server. I'm not sure if the new black Mac Pro supports that configuration or not.
iPhoto, there is an iPhoto for all versions of Mac OS X.
iTunes, there is an iTunes for all versions of Mac OS X. Note with iTunes versions 11 and later, which are needed for syncing with iOS 7 or or later, you will lose coverflow, if you liked that feature. Sadly you can't run an older version of iTunes from within Mac OS X 10.9 or later.

Can an external Firewire hard drive be used to boot up intel based macs?

I was looking to buy an external HD for back-ups (finally) and it just dawned on me that it may no longer be possible with intel macs.
I know this is possible with non-intel macs.

I like the OWC enclosures. They have single and dual depending on your budget - you can do quite a bit with them, raid/mirroring etc. Do bear in mind that later you could add an Airport Extreme which supports network drives over USB - so you could wirelessly access the drive at home and then boot over fw if you needed to. Obviously would need USB and FW

As for the drives to put in them. I quite like Seagate drives. I know some here also like Western Digital. Haven't seen many recommendations for other brands of drive. Do bear in mind that manufacturers of complete external drives mostly don't make the actual drives, so a Lacie external may have a hitachi or other hard drive in it - I know they often use Seagates.
Latest Seagates are 7200.10 and are SATAII. No point going for IDE or ATA anymore.

Using two displays simultaneously on an early intel mac mini

I would like to connect my Apple display and an LCD TV to my early Intel Mac Mini using a DVI-D splitter and DVI-D cable to the DVI input on the TV. I don't know if this Mac Mini's video card has a single or a duel DVI output. I'm assuming it has to have a duel output to be able to have both displays on at the same time. Also, from what I've read previously in the discussions, I assume I'll have hook up the audio output also, assuming the video works. Thanks for any help.

I'm pretty sure that can't work for a variety of reasons. Primarily the DVI output on the mini has a single digital output, not two. It has been shown that it can output VGA analog and DVI digital simultaneously when booted under Windows, but the OS X driver for the GMA950 does not support that same trick. So I don't think you are going to be able to do what you want unless you run Windows.
You could try add-on hardware if you really have your mind set on this. There are USB-to-video adapters out there on the market. They are reported to work pretty well with the caveat that they can't be used for things like full screen video which requires more bandwidth than USB can supply. But for a mostly static display, like using a mail reader or a browser without too much animation, or a spreadsheet, etc., they work well enough.
