Using Nano as thumbdrive

Hey there,
I have an iPod shuffle which doubles as my USB thumbdrive but I want to get a Nano. Can you use a Nano as a thumbdrive to store documents, etc as well?
Thanks.

Hi Paul,
Yes, you can. The following is from the "iPod Nano Features Guide" PDF.
"Using iPod nano as an External Disk
You can use iPod nano as an external disk to store and download data files.
Note: To download music files to iPod nano, you must use iTunes. For example, you won’t see songs you download with iTunes in the Macintosh Finder or in Windows Explorer. Likewise, if you copy music files to iPod nano in the Macintosh Finder or Windows Explorer, you won’t be able to play them on iPod nano.
To enable iPod nano as an external disk:
1. In iTunes, select iPod nano in the Source list and click the Options button.
2. Click Music and select “Enable disk use.”
When you use iPod nano as an external disk, the iPod nano disk icon appears on the desktop on the Mac, or as the next available drive letter in Windows Explorer on a Windows PC.
Note: Clicking Music and selecting “Manually manage songs and playlists” in the Options window also enables iPod nano to be used as an external disk. Drag files to and from iPod nano to copy them."
I have both a 1 GB Shuffle and a 4 GB Nano and love them both.
Hope this helps you make your decision to get a Nano!

  • Replacing my stolen Nano 2nd Gen with a used Nano 3rd Gen

Someone stole my Nano. My kind brother in law has offered me his 3rd gen nano to replace it.
How, precisely, do I synch this used Nano with my iTunes so I don't hopelessly screw up my music and successfully get it onto the new/used Nano?

    Hello Rick
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
First, you will have to restore it via iTunes. This will wipe all the content currently on it and set it back to its original default settings.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339
From there you will go through the basic set up process and configure your iPod to sync however you wish. Then you should be on your way and good to go.

  • Didn't set Gnome-session in CLI using nano to start with startx...

    (continued)
My screen now looks like this upon boot. http://uppix.net/d/2/7/176e2b840bbf0d35 … accd64.png
Is there a way for me to use nano still?
(note) I noticed before I went and rebooted and ended up like this, if I started x it would display a DE, but with aqua-esque color on what appears to be a title bar with CLI with me in root since I was in root at the time and a mouse cursor that I was able to move around.
If there is need for me to try to elaborate on anything, I will do so to the best of my ability.

  • HELP, trying to use nano on another computer

Hey, I just got the nano and i have it set up on my office computer but now im trying to put it onto my laptop, i downloaded the ipod disk that i got with it but when i look at my library of songsk, i can not listen or click on them. do i have to authorise laptop if so how.
    all my thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Are you looking at the iPod's library of songs through iTunes (the songs are on the iPod, not iTunes)?
If the iPod is automatically updating, you cannot play the songs from your iPod on another computer. You would have to manually update...

Or, are you trying to move the music from the iPod to your laptop? If so, try one of these options...
    YamiPod
    Using iPod with multiple computers
If you choose to go the software route, more options are available (Search the internet via Google).
If you are automatically updating the iPod now though, and the songs are not actually on the laptop, but just on your iPod (and you see the songs on the iPod through iTunes), then you will not be able to play them on your computer. You have to put them on your computer or manually update.

  • Using Nano as a player through PC

I have a Mac Mini at home as the source computer for my iTunes library and the song list for the Nano. I would like to use my Nano to play those songs through my PC at the office.
I realize the Nano is a one-way tool - it can only be updated by a computer and not the other way around. But, what I want to do is just play the songs from my Nano through something on my PC so I don't have to wear headphones while working in the office. I can see the library of songs and playlists on the Nano through the iTunes software on my PC, but I can't play any of the songs and when I try to play from the Nano itself, the sound does not come through the PC speakers.
Is there any way to accomplish this?
    Mac Mini & PC

If you can see the songs on the nano in iTunes on the PC, then you should be able to play them from iTunes on the PC. iTunes will have control and the nano will just be the music source.
To play music with the nano in control, don't use a PC. Plug a pair of (powered) speakers into the headphone jack on the nano and play away. Or invest in one of the many speaker/radio devices with an iPod dock in it.
I'm just envious that your work will let you take a nano into the office.

  • General query using Nano as a iTunes Library back-up

Just wanted know if I used my Nano 3rd Gen solely as a back-up for my iTunes Library (currently also back-up my Library to both an external drive & CDs), how would this affect the Nano's battery life?
I would backing up to the Nano once a week but using it for nothing else (purchased a Touch 2nd Gen recently) - going by Apple's battery recommended guidelines, iPods require at least one full power cycle a month.
Given this, would I be seriously degrading my Nano's battery life with such limited usage?

There's no way to know; theoretically, it should function like any other (battery operated) USB drive (which I wouldn't rely on for critical data). Why don't you just back it up on a different hard drive or burn it on a CD-R?? I actually back-up my iPod to an external hard drive and burn ALL my mp3's to CD-Rs.

  • Using Nano as flash drive...

I used my 2nd gen nano as a flash drive to transfer music from my PC to my new mac. I deleted the files once they were transfered but when my ipod is connected all the empty space still shows up full as "other". What is the deal with that? Is there any way to fix this without reformatting?

Delete items from the iPod "drive" then empty the Mac system trash to really erase them from the drives, of which your iPod is one of.

  • Transferring data from pc to imac using nano?

    Hi,
I'm trying to transfer 15GB of data from my win98 pc to my new imac. As a first attempt, I bought an external enclosure, removed my pc's hard drive, put the hd in the external enclosure, and hooked the external enclosure up to my imac, but my imac can't read the drive.
Someone suggested that I put the hd back in my pc and use my 8GB nano to transfer the data. How does that work? My pc has a USB port(old type) and no ethernet port.

    Hi,
I should also have added that Windows can't read the
HFS+ file system that Macs use and also, putting the
iPod into disk mode should not erase any data from
    it.
Format the iPod on the PC by restoring it, and you
can use the iPod on both platforms.
Sorry, I put this whole issue aside because it was too confusing, but now I'm trying to get the data moved from pc to my imac again. My situation is this: I have an imac with itunes and a win98pc that does not have itunes.
Enable your nano for data in iTunes
I did that by selecting "Manually manage songs and playlists", which will also allow you to use your ipod as a drive. If you do that, the ipod won't try to download your itunes songs, which apparently happens if you select Disc Mode, as explained here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61131
    EJECT it
    I did that.
and see if it shows up as either a removable drive or
USB Mass Storage device on the PC desktop.
On win98, it says a driver is missing. According to this website:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/consumerelectronics/ipodfaq/ipod-mac-and-pc-usage-macos-9-windows-98.html
"Officially, Apple provides no support for Windows 98. You cannot use the iPod with Windows 98, as the operating system lacks support for FireWire and USB 2.0.
However, with some work, you can use a Windows-compatible iPod with Windows 98. A forum posting from iLounge provides instructions on how to use a Windows-compatible iPod 3G with Windows 98 and FireWire, as well as some subsequent models, and Michael Hobot's personal page provides a driver and instructions on how to use Firewire-based iPods with USB."
I looked around on the internet, and I found my way to this website:
    http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/support/proassist.php?c=9899
which has a driver for ipod on win98. I downloaded the driver per the instructions, but when I directed win98 to look in the folder with the driver, win98 says it couldn't find an appropriate driver.
Even if that had worked, there were more potential problems in store:
"If your iPod has been previously used on a Windows 2000 or XP computer, it may already be formatted and initialized. At this point, you can try connecting to your iPod in Anapod. If it works, you are done with this page and ready to go.
If Anapod complains that it could not find your iPod, then you probably need to format and initialize the drive. Normally you could do this with the Apple Updater utility, but because it does not run on Windows 98/ME, we provide an alternative called Anapod Reinitializer that runs on all versions of Windows."
    and then there is this:
"As using an iPod with Windows 98 effectively is a "hack", EveryMac.com does not recommend it, but several readers have written to confirm that this method works."
    As for this advice:
also, putting the iPod into disk mode should not erase any data from it.
    that seems correct, but
Format the iPod on the PC by restoring it, and you
can use the iPod on both platforms.
    apparently will erase the data:
"Converting a Mac-formatted iPod into a Windows-formatted iPod requires the iPod to be "restored", and doing so will erase the hard drive."
In conclusion, it appears I have reached another dead end in trying to transfer my 15GB of data from my win98 pc to my imac. I previously tried doing so with an external hard drive enclosure: I took my drive out of my pc, slid it in the enclosure and connected it via USB 2.0 to my imac, but my imac could not read the drive.

  • Could any one tell me nano sim can be cut from Normal sim like micro sim. I heard new iPhone uses nano sim

    Hi All,
My friend told me he will get unlocked new iPhone on first week of launch .He is in Canada and i am in India. I heard new iPhone features nano sim. It is possible to cut nano sim from normal sim like we do for micro sim. iPhone releases in India only in November so if we cant get nano sim  from normal sim , then i have to postponed my new iPhone purchase

No one here knows Apple's plans regarding any new iPhone & what type of sim that phone may or may not use. As to whether a Mico sim can be cut down to Nano size, the answer is yes. I suspect cutters will appear on the market shortly after such is released.
The real question you should be asking is why, if you live India, are you looking to purchase an iPhone anywhere else other than India. iPhone warranty & support is country specific, only valid in country of original purchase. You purchase an iPhone in Canada, you prepared to physically bring the phone back to Canada for ALL warranty & support issues? You can't mail it back to Apple. Makes no sense to me.

  • Using nano with iPod dock -- no sound

I've seen lots of mentions that the dock connector on the nano is "standard". So I plugged the nano into my older iPod dock at home (came with my 40GB monochrome iPod). Power charging works, but with the nano plugged in I get no sound through the line out port on the dock. The 40GB iPod sound works fine through the same dock.
Is this expected or do I have a defective nano? Thanks in advance.

    Eric,
I noticed an odd behavior trying to use my nano with my friend's docking station the other day. I would get no sound out of the dock unless I reset the nano. In playing around with it, it seemed that plugging in my headphones caused the audio out through the dock connector to stop. lf I simply reset the nano before connecting to the dock (after unplugging the headphones), then the audio out through the dock worked fine.
It might just be something funky with my Sony headphones, but I didn't have my Apple buds with me to try.

  • Storage requirements for video using Nano, iMovie ( on mini Mac).

I recently acquired a new Nano with the video option. Took some video clips at a wedding and converted to a 7 minute video using iMovie on my Mac Mini. Included a few title pages. Required storage capacity 18GBytes. Seems excessive. Any comments on how I could get this figure down without reducing the length of the video etc.

Any other processes running on the mini at the same time?

  • Buying Used Nano but know nothing about iPod...Need help!!!

Hello, first off let me say I know nothing about iPods. I want to buy a used one. I was told that iTunes will only recognize 1 iPod. The person I am buying it from tells me that she is unable to sync both her new iPod and old iPod to her itunes. She gets a message stating that only one iPod can be synced to iTunes. I don't want to purchase this from her only to find that it will not sync to my iTunes.
Does iTunes have some sort of security feature that will prevent me from purchasing this from her and syncing it with my iTunes? If so can I reset an iPod back to factory settings?
    Please help???

I bought an ipod nano 5th generation used from someone in China. It is not showing up in iTunes, but it does show up on my mac desktop. I believe it was reformatted and is not recognized by iTunes. How can I fix this? Is there a way to restore without using iTunes? How can I reformat?
