Using NAS Drive during editing.

Ok so I'm about to make a big purchase because I'm sick of Hard Drives failing on me.  I'm going with a NAS device that takes 4 HD's and then I can RAID half of them to be mirrored.  Only problem is, can I have my source clips on it's network while I edit on Final Cut Pro?  The drives would be 7200rpm, would I be able to hook a mac computer up to this?
What are some of the ways you guys efficiently edit without having to worry about TB's of clips on your external drives?

What exactly are you trying to accomplish?
RAID 1 (Mirroring) ONLY protects against drive failure. It does not help with file corruption or unintentional deletion of files because whatever happens to drive A in the set is duplicated on drive B.
If you are looking for data security, you need a three tiered storage system:
Level 1 - on line access
Level 2 - near line storage
Level 3 - off line storage
For Level 1, RAID 1 offers security. It is a relatively expensive option because you need 2x the capacity and additionally, your write times may be slower because the data has to be written 2x.
Better in my mind is RAID 5. This gives you the same data security with less of a hit for storage and write times. The downside is you need at least 3 drives in the set.
Then, for Level 2, get a set of hard drives and something like a voyager Q bare drive sled and use Carbon Copy Cloner to back up the contents. This is important to address the problem of file corruption or unintentional deletion where RAID 1 or 5 won't save you.
Still, you really need two sets of drives at this level to provide redundency so that if one off line drive dies (and you do not have the material currently on the RAID 5 drive) you have a backup.
For Level 3, you start looking at high capacity tape storage.
If you have a solid Level 2 strategy, you can probably get away with not employing any redundency at Level 1 (RAID 1 or RAID 5).
Best.

  • Need advise about using NAS drive for TM and other storage

I have 2 macs. One is running Snow Leopard and has a FW 400 drive connected directly to it for TM backups. I have another older mac (G5 PPC) running Tiger and I plan to update to Leopard so I can also do TM backups for it.
So, I'm thinking of getting the following NAS enclosure, adding a 2TB drive to it, so I can do TM backups on the old mac (and maybe switch the other mac to use it too).
    The questions I have are:
    1. is it fast enough to do it over the network, compared to the direct FW 400 connection?
    2. Can I partition the new NAS 2TB in half and move the TM backup folder over there and then tell my new mac that it needs to do the TM backup there?
That's all I have for now. Hope someone can help.
    Thank You!

That does not appear to be compatible with Time Machine.

  • Making sure FCPx uses proxy media during editing

I read the manual on this and it is vague, so . . .
The proxy media has been created (I've checked that the files actually exist.)  How do I ensure that these files are being used when I setup my multicam clip?
How do I ensure that they are being used while editing?
Anything special to do while exporting the final product to ensure best quality?
I've gone through the project properties and nothing jumps out at me as requiring a change except perhaps the render format.

    Rusty Rat wrote:
That was one of my concerns - how to ensure I didn't produce the final product from proxy media.  I suppose though that the proxy makes a good choice for producing a 'draft' version.
Yes, you can export in proxy as a draft version.
Render Format is in the Project Properties > Audio and Render Properties > Render Format.
Thanks. I had never noticed that. ProRes 422 seems to be adequate in most cases. Not sure about speed. In fact, in most cases you may not need to render at all. I always keep "background rendering" turned off and only render a section of the video if playback is not smooth.

  • ITunes Error when using Nas drive..Error occurred while converting the file the disk can not read from or written to

This is the error I get only when trying to convert a file to AAC.  I have my itunes library stored on a network drive it all works fine I can add files sync files with my devices exc.  Only when I dry to convert a flie from mp3 to AAC do I get this error.  Any one have any suggestions.
    Thanks
    Rick

I wonder if the disk being referred to is actually your iPod which is not plugged in. Maybe something has stuck thinking the iPod should be there.
Try completely removing all the iTunes related programs according to this method.

  • Using an "iTunes Server" on a NAS drive for several users

Like many others I'm trying to make a single drive containing my iTunes media serve different iTunes users round the house.
Will the following work? Comments welcomed.
Currently my iTunes Media Folder and media live on my main PC. About 130Gb in total.
I'd like to get a NAS drive that has "iTunes Server" functionality and put this NAS drive on our home network. Then I'd like to move my iTunes media folder location into the 'iTunes Server' folder on the NAS drive. I'd also like to transfer all the data files associated with iTunes to the NAS drive. I believe with iTunes 10 that shouldn't be a problem and that I can contunue to use iTunes on my main PC as I ever did....it's just the media and data files will now all reside on the networked NAS.
Now I'd like to point all the iTunes on the other PCs in the house to the networked iTunes Media folder and the networked data files. Then presumably they will boot up and be able to access everything just like my main PC.
I understand that if more than one PC tries to edit the data files and iTunes media folder then corruption will inevitably result. I wondered if this could be prevented by using access rights management to all the networked iTunes files so that only my main PC can actually edit anything, add music, etc.
That way I hoped that I may manage the library successfully, create playlists as required and have all the other PC users enjoy my work but without screwing it up!
Maybe an iTunes data file can't be read by two instances of iTunes at the same time? Perhaps a second PC reading the data files can cause a corruption, if my main PC happens to be editing those files at the same time?
In essence I want all iTunes related files on the NAS drive. I want all PCs(with iTunes) in the house to have full read-only access to the music, playlists etc. However I would like my main PC to remain as the sole machine that administers the iTunes library and related files.
Looking forward to any help. Like others I've spent many hours trying to ascertain the best way to share a single iTunes media store around the house.
I know I could leave my main PC on and have the other PCs get at the content that way. However the power consumption of my desktop setup is not insignifcant and we will have a NAS drive running 24/7 anyway for other duties.
    Hope that all makes sense.
    Cheers
    Geoff

I now realise that if what I propose will work then "iTunes server" is not required on the NAS. However if the iTunes Media Folder was placed in the "iTunes Server" on the NAS then other media players like the ROKU could access the files?

  • Use of a NAS Drive, iTunes, Movies and Apple TV - Help please

I have an IMAC and i have a number of movies stored there within Itunes.
My Mac is operated in a Wireless Environment and when using Apple TV sometimes the IMAC cannot be located despite home sharing being on both devices and when it can be located and I watch a movie that is stored there sometimes the signal drops off which interrupts the movie.
The Apple TV is connected in a wired environment.
SOmeone has suggested that I should move my Itunes library music and movies to a NAS drive and connect that to my router which is hard wired,
    Suggestions help and guidance welcomed

Update: I've found a work-around that lets me watch the movies, although it disables the iTunes Extras content (but it's not deleted).
While looking through the files for the Extras content, I noticed that for the two films I've had trouble with (X-Men Origins and Twilight), the Extras content was located in a separate folder from the actual mp4 movie files. For all my other movies that have the Extras content (and that were working), the content was in the folder with the movie. I tried moving the content into the movie folders, but that didn't help. Eventually, I removed the extras content from my iTunes library, without actually deleting it.
This caused the Apple TV to pick up the movies as if they were by themselves without the Extra features, and allows me to play them directly without going through the Extras menu. Something about the way that the Extras content was downloaded and associated with the movies seems to have gone wrong with those two movies, whereas for the others it worked correctly.
This is obviously not a long-term solution if you want to watch the Extra content, but at least this way the movie is streaming correctly on the ATV.
PS: for those two movies I mentioned above, the Extras content was listed separate from the movie itself in the iTunes library; whereas for the correctly functioning movies with Extras, the content was listed as another "track" under the movie.

  • How do I use Time Machine with a NAS drive?

I was hoping to use a USB drive with my new Netgear router to do Time Machine backups, but I have since learned that the router only supports Windows or FAT formatted drives.
Will a NAS drive work with Time Machine?  If so, can someone give me a crash course on how to set one up and use it?
    Thanks!
For the record, I have a Netgear N300 DSL Modem/Router combo, and I'm running 10.6.8 on a Macbook Pro.
Here are links to two drives I was looking at:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136745  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822165198

I don't think Time Machine is supported on anything other than Time Capsule. That being said, TM works fine on my WD 2TB MyBookLive NAS. The specs on the one I bought specifically said it would work with TM. Neither one of the links you posted mentioned TM so I would be leary.

  • Best way to import large CD collection to external NAS drive using iTunes

I am planning to re-import a large CD collection to an external NAS drive with iTunes. Previously I imported using a WAV encoder, but now realize that none of the music was tagged and attempts using a tag from file name script proved unsuccessful.
Can anyone advise me on the best method and codic to do this with iTunes? I was planning to use either AAC or MP3 set at 256 or 320kbps. Both of these encoders, I am being told, will hold the ID3 tag. Any other recommendations on this process is welcomed.
Also, once I have the music imported to the network drive, how do I get the itune library to be recognized on another computer on the network (not the computer that was used to import)?

All of the iTunes compatible formats will accept tags, except for WAV. Most people nowadays use either AAC or MP3 at 256 kb/s. But if your ears and your audio setup require the extra fidelity of a lossless format, go with Apple Lossless or AIFF.
Before you start ripping, go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced, and set the iTunes Media folder location to the NAS. Then any files that you rip from CD will go straight to the NAS.
Also, once I have the music imported to the network drive, how do I get the itune library to be recognized on another computer on the network (not the computer that was used to import)?
iTunes does not have any folder watching capability. Once the files are on the NAS, you can manually go to another computer's iTunes to add them (File > Add Folder to library) or you can get 3rd party folder watching software such as iTunes Folder Watch.

  • NAS drive recommendations for use with MPB, PS3, APX and time machine?

    Hello,
I am looking to get a 1TB NAS drive and then partition about 400mb for time machine and the other 600mb will basically serve as a media/itunes server.
Wondering what recommendations you have and anything to look for in the product details? Is bittorrent an important feature? usually I just use the client on my computer and save to an external drive but maybe thats inefficient.
I don't need raid, try to keep the cost down
    thanks

Hi Rhett, if you post this in the 'Time Machine' category, you might get faster response and plenty suggestions.

  • Using external NAS drive for Time Machine and multiple Macs

I just installed an external NAS drive from OWC's sister company Newer Tech. It is 500g with ethernet and usb2.0 connections. It works very well with easy setup with Time Machine with no hassle.
However, in very fine print that I missed in the ad, it supports 20 computers but not for Mac only for PC. OWC customer service said I could return it but I'll keep it anyway since it works well but only for one computer at a time in read/write mode.
Anyone know of a way around this? Are there any drivers from other vendors that would allow this to be used with the multiple Macs on my home network?

Very doubtful, but even if there is a workaround, you do not want to take that kind of risk with your backups.

  • Using an exteral hard drive to edit movies

    Hello,
I need some help. I have a iBook G4 and am running OS X 10.3.9. I have a lot of footage that I want to import and edit in imovie. I do not have enough hard drive space on my laptop to do that. I would like to buy and external hard drive to edit on, but I don't know which to purchase. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My camera is fire wire and I don't mind downloading and then moving the projects to an external hard drive but I need to be able to edit from there. I have firewire 400 and USB 2.0 plugs so I could use either to plug into my machine. Any help on choosing a modle of hard drive would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you in advance.

    Huart,
One thing to consider is how many Firewire ports does your Powerbook have? Since many only have one, people often try to hook their Firewire drive into the Laptop then daisy chain the camcorder off the back of the drive. While this can work, often it does not.
And sometimes it will half work. As an example, in the beginning, I daisy chained my Sony off the back of my drive. For importing this worked great, never had any troubles importing several tapes. However when I got to the point where I was ready to export my first completed project back to tape, I found it wouldn't work right. Turns out exporting through the daisy chain was a no go. I then moved the camera to directly connect to my eMac with the drive also connected directly to the eMac and it worked fine. Since then I have always imported and exported with both tied directly to the Mac. Note, there is no problem going to and from the external hard drive directly.
So with a one Firewire port Laptop, if you have trouble with a daisy chain connection, you basically have two choices.
The first is to simply import to your internal drive, unplug camera, plug in drive, then copy back out to the ext drive. Same thing in reverse when you need to export back to tape.
The second is to invest in a PCMCIA Firewire card. They are not very expensive and now you should be able to run both devices at the same time, one into the Laptop directly and one via the card.

  • Using a Buffalo Linkstation NAS drive on the Airport Extreme 802.11n

I used the Buffalo Linkstation NAS drive on the previous Airport Extreme. I just upgraded to the new Airport Extreme and cannot get it to work. Buffalo support, after a two hour wait and and a 40 minute conversation, decided that it wouldn't work. If it worked on the older Airport Express, I think it should work on this one.
Does anyone have any idea how I can get this NAS drive hooked up to the Router?

  • Anyone tried to use TC with A Nas Drive attached in a windows / Osx enviroment?

    Hello There
I'm interesting to use TC in a windows/osx enviroment where i already have a network ..
At the moment there is a NAs drive 4tb attached to the switcher  and all the windows computers making a backup into this drive..
    So my question is:
I just bought a couple of macs and one TC 3TB..
In fact i want to backup every computer on the network I want to attach the NAs drive to the TC for more space and both windows and osx computeras making the backup into the TC and the NAS drive..
Do you think its going to be slow the network?
does the TC support NAS drives to extend space?
    Any suggestions are welcome
    Aris

I would have not bought the TC as many NAS have time machine extensions you could have just kept using the existing NAS. Anyway..
As long as you setup the TC in bridge.. ie go to internet tab on airport utility select connection sharing.. bridge.. then it will work as a plain switch and WAP.. with internal hard disk. You can plug it in anywhere to the system and it should be fine.. the ports are all gigabit so no slow down there.
does the TC support NAS drives to extend space?
Not 100% sure what you mean by this but no, it doesn't support anything.. there is a USB port on the TC.. but it will not recognise or backup to anything but a usb drive. there is no internal rsync or anything else. The TC is not a NAS. It is a backup device for files stored on the Mac. It is design pure and simple for TM on the Mac.

I have one device with iOS7.1.2 and iPhoto (iPhone 4) and one device with iOS8 (iPad). When configuring iOS8, I switched to iCloud Drive.
Now I can not share new Web-Journals or edit the existing Web-Projects.
Is there any way to delete the existing Web-Journals from iCloud??
I tried to delete the Web-Journal in iPhoto, but the Link also exist.

You can only delete the published journal in iPhoto on the device that created it:
iPhoto for iOS (iPad): Share your web journal as a webpage  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3156
And iPhoto can only be used with iOS 7.
