Using nested styles to break blocks of text into different pages

Hello everyone,
I'm treating data collected through a Google Docs form and I've already set it up so that the questions appear on the left and are followed by the respective answers sequentially so that I have a simple way to copy paste the whole information to Indesign. Then I'm going to use nested styles to define individual styles for the questions and answers.
What I can't do, however... and I'm not even sure if it's possible, is how to tell Indesign to break text that is laid out sequentially into different lines or to break blocks of text so that they start in the beggining of the next page without having to resize the text frames by hand.
As a visual example this is what the data I've exported out of excel looks like:
Question 1 (tab) Answer A1 (line break)
Question 2 (tab) Answer A2 (line break)
Question 3 (tab) Answer A3 (line break)
Question 1 (tab) Answer B1 (line break)
Question 2 (tab) Answer B2 (line break)
Question 3 (tab) Answer B3 (line break)
(and so on in groups of 3 questions)
And I want to turn it into:
Question 1 (turn the tabs into line breaks)
Answer A1
Question 2
Answer A2
Question 3
Answer A3
(and then start at the beggining of a new page)
Question 1
Answer B1
Question 2
Answer B2
Question 3
Answer B3
I can't define the size of the text frames so that the next group of questions+answers starts at the beggining of a new page because some of the answers are multi-line fields and thus the number of lines of the answers are variable and they can come short of the text frame edge or pass it.
Can anyone share some insight of how to do this (or if it is at all possible)?
Thank you very much!
MACC

Thank you very much for your input.
I'm trying to automate this process as much as possible because I don't want to have to crunch the data manually myself later on, instead just teach someone else how to do it.
The first search and replace action seems basic enough but regarding the second one I would have to manually assign that paragraph style to the line where the data would break because one can only assign character styles in nested styles, right?
Also I've heard that ID CS5 automatically creates new pages based on a template when you paste information inside the first page, is that so? That would be great because that way the person wouldn't have to manually create pages and link the contents throughout the document but instead simply open my template and paste the information within the first master page. That's not possible with CS4, is it?
Thank you very much!

  • Most compatable file type to use when copying and pasting specially formatted text into html pages?

    Hello,
I have a simple web site at http://www.psychicmeatloaf.com which is an online poetry journal site. I use files people send me (mostly .doc or .docx) and cut and paste the text from those files into html pages in an older version of Dreamweaver and some of the text has special formatting (like this page: http://www.psychicmeatloaf.com/Chang-poetry.htm ). The best way I have found to maintain the special text formatting is to open the .docx files and "save as a web page" in Word and then open the web page from Dreamweaver and then "Preview the page" in Explorer and copy and paste from the preview into an html page in Dreamveaver. Even using this method, some text will not maintain it's special formatting and for those I just save the page as a .jpg file and use that, because I have no other choice.
My question is, is there a better way and is there a better file type to work from other than .docx?
    Thanks a milliom,
    George

That's a lot of steps to get to a single end that could be done with a simple copy & paste of the text into code. Like Photoshop and Fireworks, Word writes some very bulky and dirty code. I wouldn't recommend it for direct copy by the method described above.
I personally copy the text and paste it into code view. It takes a little more work, but I don't get dozens of lines of inline styles added with it and using a preformatted post div (saved and hidden in the code (<!--post block code goes inside-->), I can quickly put title, date, byline and links up with a cut & paste.
    That's just my $0.02 worth
Also, since nearly EVERYONE will use a different formatting in a Word doc, putting a bunch of differently formatted posts into a page will make it look like one of those ransom notes made of cut out text from different newspapers and magazines.  Better to keep everything in a single format (your format) so it doesn't become an eyesore.

  • Bolding all type before en space without using nested styles

I'm trying to have all the words before an en space in all paragraphs made boldface without using nested styles. The nested styles work great for print, but don't seem to do the trick for epubs, such as this project.
    For example:
    Car Ferrari GTO
I tried doing a find/change for all the text formatted with the nested style, changing the nested style to no char. style + Bold. But for some reason the nested style stays attached, and if I delete the character style that is called for in the nested style, the text loses its bf.
    Thanks for any help!!

Silly me -- that trick uses another sort of workaround.
I meant to point you to Harbs' script ApplyNestedStyles: http://in-tools.com/indesign/scripts/freeware/ApplyNestedStyles.zip

  • [svn] 3148: You can now use CSS styles to set the default text format for TextView.

You can now use CSS styles to set the default text format for TextView. It no longer has any formatting properties. It supports the entire set of Gumbo text format styles.
SkinnableComponent and Group now also support all these styles. However, skins such as ButtonSkin, TextInputSkin, and TextAreaSkin continue for now to specify instance styles on their TextBox, TextGraphic, and TextView, in order to give them a Gumbo look rather than a Halo look. So if you try setting, for example, the fontSize on the Application, it doesn't yet affect the text format of a Button, TextInput, TextArea, etc. unless you remove the instance style in the skin.

  • What is the best way to split large blocks of text into smaller blocks?

Hello, I have several pages with 2,000 word articles of text. As you can imagine these pages are not terribly interesting design-wise, something I plan to change.
The first thing I need to do is split up these blocks of text into much smaller blocks so that they can easily be moved around and independently manipulated. What's the quickest way to do this in Muse?

You can create different text frames and copy the text, which if you wish you can group them together which will help in moving them around on page.
    Thanks,
    Sanjit

  • Breaking up the weblogs into different categories

It will be really nice to break up the weblogs into different categories based on technical areas(kind of like forum but not that many categories). There could be one category where all the general discussion weblog could be posted. I think this will generate more traffic towards weblogs. Right now lot of the technical weblogs are getting lost among the general content. Just a suggestion. Love to hear back from SDN members.

    Hi Sing,
Once in a while this request comes up and I have the same reaction as Craig has. It's there, just select Topics and every one of them has it's own page.
For example here is the EP page:
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/sdn/weblogs.sdn?blog=/weblogs/topic/22
Your latest Weblog still on top although there were many other posts on the most recent weblogs page.
It makes me think how we could better make it available to people. The weblogs as well as the link on the main EP page is directly to this page.
Not sure what else can be done, besides a Weblog pointing it out again.
    Best, Mark.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.<br /><br />

  • Using Nested Styles for Prices

I wish to easily plug in Prices and have them automatically edited to fit the style I want.
For example:  If I typed $3.59. . . .I would want it to show up as automatically.
I am mainly concerrned with being able to apply Superscripts and Subscripts and erasing the decimal.
A step-by-step explaination would be amazing!
    Thank you,
    - Jack

Sorry, you can't do this with styles. Styles can change formatting of text, but cannot add or delete. For that you need to run find/change.
You can search for (\.)(\d\d) and replace with $2 and set the change format to your superscript (probably with a local override rather than a style, as will become clear in a moment). It would be nice to limit this to only prices by adding a lookbehind for the dollar sign and dollar amounts, but lookbehinds cannot have varable length strings, so you would have to do one for each possible number of digits, like this:
    (?<=[$])(\.)(\d{2})
    (?<=[$]\d)(\.)(\d{2})
(?<=[$]\d{2})(\.)(\d{2}) for 0, 1 and 2 digits in front of the decimal.
You'll need a second query to add the "ea" if you don't type it, probably find \d with the find format set to superscript and change to $0ea This will leave the "ea" also in superscript, so you'll need a second query to fix that: (?<=\d)ea with the find format again set to superscript. Leave the change field blank and set the change format for normal position.
All of these queries can be chained together to run in one operation using tools you'll find at http://www.kahrel.plus.com/indesign/chain_queries.html
I WOULD use an ordinary nested style, however, to style make the prices large and orange. That would be None up to 1 $ and then your big orange style through 1 word (this may at first only make the $and dollar portion of the price big and orange, but once the decimal point is removed it shoould fix itself. If you add a space before the "ea" you'll need to apply the style through 2 words.

  • Add style to large block of text without affecting existing styles within that text

    Hello! First post here.
I have a long document of text that mostly does not have text styles attached (this was a mistake). However, there is a large number of areas of styled text within.
Is there a way to select all the text and apply a style to only the unstyled text without affecting the existing styles?
Doing this by hand text block by text block would take a long long time.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    THX!

Obviously, as seen above, I'm doing something wrong or Live View does not do all the functions that Design View use to do.  I realize I can still access Design View in non-Fluid Grid Layout documents and that is my current work-around.  I copy from my Word file into Design View available in non-Fluid, then copy that code into my Fluid Grid Layout document, not real efficient use of my time.  And, even that work-around may not be available after the next upgrade.

Hans thank you for your reply and attention to this matter.  Moreover, with your steeped expertise I do not, in any fashion, intend to be flippant or capricious.
However, I do not believe the reply is on point since I'm not discussing the insertion of an HTML tag/element; but rather, the placing of complex formatted text into my various web pages.
Design View and  2014.1 Live View seem to serve different functions.  That is, Design View, for us, serves as a highly sophisticated HTML5 code generator that allows us to properly display complex formatted text that originally is created as a Word docx file.  As I noted in my original post, the complex formatted text from the Word file is then pasted into Design View and thus properly renders on the web page.  I invite you to try this yourself.  Simply copy my properly formatted text in my original post (that can be found at "Using Design View the web page rendered this way:") to a Word file, and it will retain the complex formatting, then copy that Word file text to both Design View and  2014.1 Live View files.  Please apprise me of your results.
Discussion has been had in at least two separate threads on the Design View disappearance in Fluid Grid.  In https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1597260 staff member Lalita wrote "It would be helpful for us if you list the issues you are seeing with fluid grid live view editing."  And in https://forums.adobe.com/message/6807088#6807088 staff member Subhadeep wrote "If you can list down the workflows you are trying while editing in Live View & the issues you are facing in doing so, it will help us understand what is amiss & suggest alternative workflows to do the same."  I believe I've pointed out issues when attempting to use Live View for functions or work flow that customarily had been done in Design View.
Being a CC subscriber, if someone can provide me with a workflow using other additional Adobe products to get my complex formatted text from Word ultimately to my Dreamweaver web page, be it an image insert or whatever, I would take the suggestions.
The difference in the coding of my example in my original post is as follows.

It is readily apparent that Design View is a much needed code generator in the Dreamweaver product.  Live View serves completely other, and needed, purposes.  Therefore, I still, after all the forum discussions, do not understand why Design View has been removed from Fluid Grid.
Again Hans thank you for your reply.  But unless I'm missing something, citation to the links you provided does not solve my problem.  And that problem is this: If Design View is on its way out and thus will be completely removed from Dreamweaver at some point, then how do I provide my information (i.e. complex executive job descriptions) on my website?
Apparently a vote is taking place https://forums.adobe.com/ideas/3922 on the issue of placing Design View back into Fluid Grid.  I do not understand why the need for two rather disjunctive functionalities are at the mercy of the democratic process.  These are matters of engineering principles not "town hall gatherings".

  • Inserting text into a Pages document with Applescript

I want to create a Pages document from a custom template but be able to insert text at various points in the document (inputted data under headings etc). I would like to use Applescript but cannot get insertion points to work, is this possible? As usual, all help gratefully accepted.

I have made a Pages template that contains tables and I want to enter text into sections of these tables
That's a completely different story! But that's still possible using GUI Scripting. Here's an example:
    tell application "Pages"
        activate
select table 1 of body text of front document
tell application "System Events" to tell process "Pages"
set theWindow to window 1 whose role description is "standard window"
click button "Table" of tool bar 1 of theWindow
            keystroke "Cell A1"
            keystroke tab
            keystroke "Cell B1"
key code 125 -- down arrow
            keystroke "Cell B2"
            -- and so on
        end tell
select insertion point after table 1 of body text of front document
    end tell

  • EPUB 3 - block of text overlapping the page

    Hi.
I'm trying to complete an Epub (school book).
The challenge is, for exercises, to have the answer ready to be displayed when you hit a button (or the question iself).
I could do it, using java and the 'display:none' / 'display:inline' toggle.
BUT, if this text comes to the end of a chapter and a new page has to be created and it is not; we the loose either a portion of the answer, or portion of normal text.
That leads to question 1: is there a way to allow the chapter expands to one (or more) page(s) dynamically (and be reduced as well, of course, when needed).
OR (second challenge and question 2): is there a way to have this answer coming as a popup, a box of text on top of the current page.
I could do make this work in a 'normal' browser (z-index:200), but nothing happens on the Ipad, OR the blocks is displayed ... at the very beginning of the file (start of chapter; possibly several pages ahead ...), depending of value for 'position', either 'relative', or 'absolute'.
All this is Epub3, of course, read with IBooks.
Thanks for your valuable help !
    Joel

Moving the center raises the first line of text... that would work, if all my text could fit in the lower half of a frame...
The problem is that I cannot start with text anywhere in the top half of a the frame--that I know of.
Similarly, if I enter text that falls onto two lines, the first line is centere vertically, while the second sits below it. If I want both lines centeres, I have to MOVE the center of the frame. It doesn;t make sense to me that there is not a way to vertically center EVREYTHING I type.

  • Using eprint to print photos with email text on one page

I have been using Presto eprint services for several years for my Dad, and I really like how it works and allows me to print the email (from, to, text in the body of the email), plus any attachments, all on one page using full letter size paper  However, my parents would like to get rid of their land-line phone, so I'm looking for options to replace the Presto printer.  I was thinking that HP eprint might be a good option, but based on some initial tests with a friends printer, it seems to just print photos as full page images, without the email content.  Is there anyway to confirgure the HP eprint function to print the email text and photos or PDF file attachment on one page?  Thanks.

    Hello @Joseph_TX ,
    Welcome to the HP forums.
I understand that you want to know if a way to configure the HP ePrint.
    I would like to help.
Unfortunately there is no way to reconfigure the ePrint.
When you send an email to the printers ePrint address, it will print the body of the email and any attachments.
It will not print the subject line or who the email is from.
Also the ePrint feature will not resize pictures sent.
What you send is what you get.
You can get more control over ePrint with the ePrint app, but I don't believe that will suit your needs.

  • How to use that arrow/plus sign to expand text on a page...

    Hi all,
I'd like to learn and find out how to use a symbol or icon or
whatever to expand text on one of my pages. We've all seen it but I
have no idea what they're using to do it, in fact I'm not even sure
what the correct name is! I was going to do a view source to try to
figure it out, but I can't seem to remember any sites where I've
    seen it.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks.

Take a look at the SwapClass tutorial from Project VII:
    http://www.projectseven.com/tutorials/navigation/swapclassmenu/index.htm
Their demo uses SwapClass for a menu, but you can adapt it
    for exactly what
    you're talking about.
