Using Netgear Router - attempting to aquire WEP for additional computer

I have been using another internet provider at our previous home until yesterday when we finally got Verizon DSL here at our new  home.  I am using my router from my previous location and so far I have no problem with the two computers that were previously using it.
I am attempting to connect a third computer which has never had a wireless connection which means I need to obtain the WEP key from the router.  I have gone thru the usual channels to obtain it but instead of getting access to Netgear, I am forwarded to Verizon's welcome page which includes "Main, My Network, etc."
I cannot either wirelessly or even being hooked directly (with my laptop) into the router, access the Netgear page which in turn will show me my WEP key under security.
It seems the 192.168.0.1 takes me directly to verizon.  Any ideas?
Thanks much.  MIL would REALLY like her computer up and running.

If 192.168.0.1 takes you to the Verizon modem/router, then try going to 192.168.1.1 for the Netgear. If you have both devices hooked up, then they probably have different IP addresses. If this fails, find your "default gateway" on one of the working computers and that should be the correct IP address.

You know, this is just a thought.  I'm not sure the differences between the iq526 and iq770, but as I was looking around I found this article.  I don't know if it'll help, but you might want to take a look.  Evidently someone figured out how to use the HP touchsmart as an external monitor for his Dell laptop.

Did you have an Adobe trial running on this same computer before?  Maybe your previous trial was used for 3 weeks and then you uninstalled it?  If so, you're only eligible for a 1 week trial on this computer.

  • Portforwarding to multiple computers using netgear router? Is it possible?

    I have a NETGEAR WRG614 wireless router,
a G5 iMac 2.0 isight (wired) which is my primary computer,
    a MBP C2D 2.33 17"(wireless)
    and a iBook G4 1.33ghz (wireless).
I can use iChat no problem as far as text chats go on all machines. I can video chat with all computers on my network via bonjour, and i can video chat with other people on my iMac g5 which is wired. I couldnt on any machine untill i "Port Forwarded" the ichat port on my router. my router requires that i specify a IP address for what ports to forward... i manually had to configure my TCP/IP settings on my imac G5 so that way i can use the ports and video chat (its my primary computer) now its great i can use video chat and i love it, BUT i cant video chat to anyone via my laptop i tried to give my laptop the same IP that i forwarded the ports for but i get an error saying that its in use by another machine (my iMac) i tried to create a new set of forwarded ports on my router for another IP address but i cant, my router gives me an error that the ports i want to forward are already being used for another IP. so what am i to do? I can get the laptops to video chat individually, but i have to assign the IP thats forwarded and the iMac that usually uses that IP has to be off for it to work.
    sooo...
do i have to buy another router?
is there a way i can use all macs on my network and video chat?
    thanks in advance!!!!

The Port Triggering setting you have would need to change.
The trigger should be Port 5678 on UDP
    The In-bound ports should be 5060, 5678, 16384-16403
The single ports 5190 (both protocols), 5297, 5298 (both) and 5353 all UDP unless stated are needed to Log on to AIM and Bonjour
Also ports 5220, 5222 and 5223 on TCP are needed for the Jabber side.
(single ports equals Trigger and In-Bound)

  • Cannot use iTunes to transfer music files except for one computer login.

Info: We have 2 laptops in our home, both on Windows Vista SP2. Both iTunes 10.5. I recently got an iPhone 4 with iOS 5.0.1, on Verizon, 8 GB.
I have only one Apple ID as far as I can tell, but I do remember being forced to change my login name to an email address, and make my password more complex. During that time, I think my other laptop was inoperative. I had to install a new hard drive and reinstall Windows and all apps from scratch. The two laptops do not have identical music libraries.
Apps sync only on the first computer and user login I used the iPhone on. The other computer doesn't show the same apps and warns me that if I sync with it I might replace the apps on the phone with what's in its apps list. How do you ensure that either laptop can sync the iPhone without wiping the content off? I want to backup to both laptops.
I cannot transfer any of my music files from the second laptop at all. I get a cursor with the red slash circle. I can transfer files on the original computer, but I have to be logged on as the one computer user account. It's like every connection except this one computer account can maintain my iPhone properly.
Anyone else have a similar problem or have a fix?

Use only one computer as the mother ship to sync with a device.

  • Using two ipods on two Windows accounts for same computer

I am trying to connect and iPod nano but it does not appear in the Devices section of iTunes.  Rather, when I plug in my iPod to my Windows Vista computer, I get an error "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly.  Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software.".  It does appear in Windows Explorer.
Yet my daughter has her own (i.e. a second) iPod and iTunes functions properly for her when she accesses it from her windows account.
I have tried unistalling the iTunes software and reinstalling it but I still get the same error in my account.  I have gone through most of the troubleshooting steps in iTunes support but nothing has helped.  Is it not possible to manage two ipods with the same computer from two different accounts or is it something else?
    Any other thoughts?

Apple intentionally made the iPod to work this way to help stem the illegal sharing of copyrighted material which is what you are trying to do.
"i have tried to "transfer purchases from ipod" but this does not work either, even though i have authorised the computer."
Doesn't work that way. It wasn't your iTunes account that purchased the music.

  • Warning : Netgear router RP614

Problem solved that was caused soley by the RP614
I had replaced an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) with a Netgear RP614 because of the somewhat limited router capabilities of the AEBS. Apart from server access problems that could be solved with an update to v.6.1 (which Netgear have not yet posted on their website) our office experienced a DRAMATIC slowdown in the playback of Real Audio videos. The connection speed was max 300 kbps (we are on 1.5 Mbps broadband) and the videos would start to load, play back for 10 secs, stop, load for 10 secs, play again for 10 secs etc.
The problem is now resolved. I removed the RP 614 and replaced it with the former AEBS and we now have Real Audio connection speeds of 512 kbps, videos play smoothly again in excellent quality.
This makes it very clear that the Netgear router is the device responsible for dramatically slowing down our Internet connection.
I would prefer to return that RP614 router that has only wasted my precious business time.
I am still waiting for Netgear's response.
On the other hand I would be very grateful for a feedback from Apple users who can recommend a router that works well in an Apple wired/wireless network.
    Regards,
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)
      Mac OS X (10.3.7)

Thank you so much for your response.  I called Netgear (they were no help).  So, I read everything that I could find.  Finally, I did a search for the iPods WiFi requirements.  After all of the reading, I changed my security type.  I was using WEP.  That was the default setting, when I set up the router.  WEP wasn't compatable with the iPod.  Just as soon as I changed it & put my passphrase in, the iPod joined & has stayed connected.  The only problem was,  the 3 Tivo & kid's computer lost their connection.  I went in & ran the network set-up on each. They all work great on it, now.  It was such a simple solution.  It only took me 12 hours to figure it out.  I hope this helps someone else who is struggling with a Netgear Router.

  • Netgear Router DGN2200

    Hello,
I have just set up the BT Vision Box. I had to connect to the BT Hub to do this , but it will work with the netgear router until you want to Record  or watch anything on demand , then I have to  reconnect to the BT Hub .
It is not practical for me to use the BT Hub as it is too slow and keeps on dropping wireless connections .The issue is the  netgear router not allowing internet access for the BT Vision box . Is there a MAC address for the BT Vision or is there another way to resolve this issue.

On the netgear it says Dynamic DNS. There is nothing set here

Not that setting. On the WAN settings it should say something about getting the IP address and DNS server automatically, or it may have the DNS server already filled in.

  • Can I use my router as an adapter?

I want to use my router as a wireless adapter for my dvr. Can I do this? And if so, how? My primary dsl modem/router is in a seperate room and I really don't want to move it into the living room or buy a gaming adapter for the dvr. Please help.

Considering you have WRT54G, you may want to explore DD-WRT firmware which can be setup in Client Bridge configuration. I do not believe Linksys firmware supports that configuration.

  • Connecting Powerbook to Netgear Router using WEP

I am trying to set up a wireless network in my house using WEP Password protection. I have Netgear wireless router (WGR614 v5) that supports both WEP and WPA protection, but I am trying to add my dad's laptop to the network with a Netgear WG511 v1 network card, which only supports WEP protection. My PB connected fine when I had it set up with WPA, but since I switched to WEP, the Powerbook says "There was an error joining the AirPort network...". I also have one windows desktop wired to the router, as well as my PB, right now. Any suggestions

Here are a few more methods of solving this problem:
    - try entering the same 13-character alphanumeric passphrase on both the Netgear router and the Mac
    - try entering the same 26-digit hexadecimal passphrase on both the Netgear router and the Mac
Make sure the Netgear router is running the latest available firmware version available from Netgear's web site.

It's not that simple. You need a "smart" device to connect a hard drive to, like a Time Capsule, or another computer, or an Airport Extreme/Express that was made to share a drive, or some other brand router that has a USB port for sharing a drive, etc.

My pc is down and I'm trying to put a wep for this router so no one can use my internet but me. Is there anyway I can set a password with an iPad as I don't have a desktop or a laptop. Please help.

The AirPorts, unlike routers provided by other manufacturers, do not provide a web-based administration interface ... so the PS3 or any browser would not work.

  • I have an IMAC that runs OS 10.6.7.  I use Netgear for wireless. My computer keeps losing the network, so I can't use wireless.

I have an IMAC that runs OX 10.6.7. I use NEtgear for wireless. I have a laptop and Ipod that I use on the wireless. Recently, my desktop computer shows that it is searching for the wireless system (on the router). I contacted Netgear. They talked me into buying another router and their technical contract. Nothing is working. I can plug my  5200 modem directly up to my desktop , and the  network is fine, but the wireless, of course, is not plugged in. When I go to connect the wireless, it doesn't work. This is not a computer program per se, nor is it a router program because sometimes it will work. It seems to me that the computer and router are not working together to hold the settings.
I have attempted to download the latest software for my computer, i.e., Imac graphics fireware. Each time I try, it says that the extensions are not valid for my computer.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Vicki

    Imac graphics fireware.
Did you mean to say firmware? You should only install firmware updates when offered to you via Software Update; other than that, whatever is offered is not appropriate for your model.
As for your Netgear router - I have a Netgear and set it up manually on their web interface setup site (the address should be in your manual). Did you call your ISP so they will recognize that there is a router involved? Sometimes my iMac also does not want to communicate with the router; however, my Macbook and printer have no problem. I solved the problem by connecting things this way:
cable from wall to modem > cable from modem to router > cable from router to iMac. The other things are wireless.

  • Can I use Netgear powerline range extender with Actiontec router M1424WR-D?

We have been using FIOS internet happily with an Actiontec router (M1424WR-D) since 2008, but we have a 'dead zone' in a remote part of our home. I am attempting to install a Netgear Powerline AV 200 Wireless N-Extender kit in the dead zone room, but have not been successful. If I give a unique SSID to the extender, and do not set any encryption, I am able to have wireless connection in the room, but having unprotected wireless connection is unacceptable to me. If I use the same SSID for extender and Actiontec router, and use the same encryption key for the extender as is used on the Actiontec router, then I no longer have wireless connection in the room. I hope someone can provide some help in understanding what it is I'm doing wrong in setting up this powerline extender. Should the extender have the same SSID and encryption key? Should it be a different one? Thanks for any help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Great news! At last I finally have been able to get a Netgear Powerline AV200 Wireless-N Extender Kit to provide wifi in the 'dead zone' in our house, and I was able to secure the network with an encryption key which I set up wirelessly, instead of relying on the 'wired' security option offered by the kit (a push-button on the side of the extender box). None of the phone techs at Netgear were able to figure out why we could not get the kit to work properly to begin with, and I finally gave up on the phone techs.
For anyone interested in using this product and who needs to set it up with a non-Netgear router, or a router that does not have a WPS button on it, please be aware that the resource CD in the box may be out of date. You will need to go to Netgear's website and download the Powerline Utility software for your device directly from the website. You will need to supply your product serial number in order to get the download. It is important to have this up-to-date software. I discovered that the up-to-date software downloaded from Netgear functioned more smoothly and allowed me to set up my encryption effortlessly. After forcing a factory reset on the extender and removing the device IP addresses associated with the initial unsuccessful attempt to create a secure network, I was able to set up the extender and secure it with absolutely no problem. The up-to-date software seemed to be the critical factor. The product seems to be working really well now and so far we are happy with it.
A word of caution when dealing with Netgear's phone techs. On some occasions when I phoned into Netgear my case was farmed out to a company called i-Yogi. I had a disturbing experience with one of the techs at i-Yogi. One of the i-Yogi techs said he could help me to set up encryption on my network using the AV200 extender, but that he needed first to gain remote access to my laptop. He also wanted access to another laptop in our house in addition to the one I was working from. This seemed odd and I refused to allow access to the second laptop. After gaining remote access he noted that I was using Norton 360 and he claimed that it was not working with my XP operating system and attempted to sell me a copy of McAfee security software at a reduced rate. He became very pushy about this. I refused to engage in this purchase and insisted that he return to the task of troubleshooting my encryption issue. At this point he still had not once attended to the configuration of the extender settings at all, but even so he refused to assist me, saying that it was not his problem that my network was not secured. It was not a good experience, and I believe he had a totally different agenda than dealing with my technical issue.
