Using New Apple Keyboard with Tiger

Hey all,
So I recently got one of the new Apple Keyboards
(http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB869LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA1Mg&mco=Nzk3NjM4NQ) for me to use with my Macbook, which is connected to an external display. However, the one problem I've been having is that it seems like the function keys are mapped differently between Leopard/SL and Tiger, so that when I press F12, which should be volume up according to my keyboard, Dashboard appears instead, which is what happens on my Tiger Macbook's actual keyboard. Now this would be fine and dandy as long as F5 corresponded to volume up as well, as it does originally, but f5 now refreshes my internet page. Is there any way to correct this? Thanks.

Check if reassigning keys in preferences > keyboard > keyboard shortcuts does anything
Not sure if this helps:

  • HT5636 I am using an Apple keyboard with numeric key pad.

I have a new Mac OSX 10.9.2. I am using Bootcamp to run WIndows 8.1.
I have just connected a new USB Apple keyboard with numeric key pad.
All works fine in OSX. But in windows the numeric numbers on the keypad wont work.
Numlock appears to work, but nothing happens when the number keys are pressed.
The keys / * - +and entre all work ok. Just not the numbers.
MIcrosoft SUPPORT REFUSED to help me because i am using a mac, they claim it is a hardware problem.

I would look for a program which would display the ascii value of typed letters
if i had the letter the key send one can assign that value to any other function one wish
    https://www.google.dk/search?q=program+which+display+the+acsii+of+typed+letters& oq=program+which+display+the+acsii+of+typed+letters&aqs=chrome..69i57.11855j0j4& sourceid=chrome&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8#q=program+which+display+the+ascii+of+typed+let ters&spell=1
if the program would get no ascii value from the num keyboard then I suppose ms were correct
if not then there are tons of free programs to reassign keys as one see fit
and even if they were not to work one can do it manually in regedit in windows

  • New Apple Keyboard with MacBook Pro

Hi - I got the new Apple keyboard today and in spite of other users opinion - I like it very much. It is small and very silent. I had a good feeling for the touch from the start. I love the new keys for multimedia, especially those for iTunes.
Only complaint I have: the keys for Dashboard and Exposé dont seem to work at all. Similar experiences or advice?
    Thanks...

I just got my MBP yesterday and immediately found Expose to be an issue with the keyboard. I did some hunting and here's the solution:
this is easy. Go to the Keyboard/Mouse setup and uncheck "Use F1-F12 for Software features". That makes the F-keys F-keys again. If you want to control brightness and volume again then press "fn" plus the corresponding f-key.
Unfortunately, you can't customize it between the 2 modes so I went withusing hot corners.

  • Hi there, can anyone give me a link to download bootcamp? I want to use my apple keyboard with my windows7 machine. I'm surprised at just how difficult it is to find this!! Any help much appreciated!

Would really appreciate some help on this one. I've had a good search around... it's not clear to me where to get the 64 bit version of the driver install files.

    Thanks for your reply CSound1.
I was using Windows7 so didn't have the stuff you mentioned. However I actually found that the keyboard pairs anyway.. apart from a couple of mappings (which I can live with) it all worked just like using any other wireless keyboard! Not sure why I thought I needed to over complicate things!
Just need to go into device manager -> Add New -> Press Keyboard power button to get ready to pair -> Select -> Enter Passcode -> Bob's your uncle!
    Thanks for the help though!

  • I can't use my Apple keyboard with my ipad.

Can you help me.  This happened quite recently, prior to which I was able to us the keyboard.

I'm certain you connect via Bluetooth. In Settings/Bluetooth, make your device is enabled. If still no go, disable the Bluetooth, then reenable it.
    Post with your results!

  • New Apple Keyboard requires 10.5.6?

I'm posting this here in the hope that someone has a new iMac with the new Apple Keyboard (sans numeric keypad) and another Mac running 10.4.11, and can try an experiment.
The new Apple Keyboard, sans number pad, is a great idea that I've been waiting for for almost 20 years. However, when I recommended it to a client (with a PowerBook G4 running 10.4.11), he came back and pointed out that it requires "Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later". Huh? It's just a keyboard, with a USB cable. Of course, it has the new set of F keys on the top row, but so do the Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad, which requires 10.4.1 (? - that's what the Apple Store page says, though I suspect it's a typo for 10.4.10) and the Apple Wireless Keyboard, which requires 10.4.10.
If someone could try the new Apple Keyboard with a Mac running 10.4.11 and see if and how it works, I'd very much like to hear the results. As I suspect would many others.

HI, I have the new keyboard and am still using Tiger (10.4.11). I found the function keys don't work as expected--the volume keys wouldn't work at all. I called Apple Care and they told me the new keyboards were designed for 10.5. For the volume keys I got something called "sizzlingkeysforiTunes" which works, although it opens iTunes. I was able to map a key for application windows, which is F13 on an extended one.
I was happy to be rid of the number pad since I use a pen tablet, but found I really really miss the home, end and pg up/pgdn keys. I use them constantly in Photoshop, and the command/control equivalents aren't working in Photoshop. I don't know if they'll work in Leopard, though.
So, I'm not so happy with it, but I like the size and lack of number pad.

  • Apple Keyboard with number pad doesn't work with Mac Pro?

I have a Mac Pro, and have used an Apple Keyboard with a number pad (not bluetooth) with it for quite a while, with no problems. But then my keyboard broke and I ordered a replacement Apple Keyboard with a number pad (not bluetooth). This keyboard doesn't work with my Mac Pro. I have it plugged in, but I can't get the Mac Pro to consistently recognize that there is a USB keyboard connected to it. What magical stuff do I have to do to get the keyboard to be fit for purpose?

It would not hurt to try an SMC Reset. (But if it does not help, it adds credence to lllaass assertion that the keyboard is not working.)

  • New Apple Keyboard Incompatible w/OS 10.4.11 is there a Solution?

I have a new Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad but it isn't  working correctly with my Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5 running os 10.4.11.
The problem is the top row of Function Keys (such as monitor brightness keys, speaker volume and on/off keys, etc) do not work correctly.
Is there any sort of software patch I can download to correct the way the keyboard is programmed so it will work correctly with my computer's OS, or is any other workaround?
    Thanks a bunch.

Hello, I consider what Apple did with that KB silly as can be.
I think Spark cured this for another person and the same problem...

What indicated to you that an update was required?
To ensure your Mac has all the latest updates, simply click the Apple Logo in the upper left corner of your screen, and select "Software Update" from the menu.
I recommend Repairing Permissions both before and after performing Software Updates.

I recently purchased an old iMac G3 Macintosh. I was wondering, is there a way where I can update it without using an external disc? I've seen the newer Apple products with the dock, if I update my iMac G3, will it have that, and if so, how can I do that?

I was wondering, is there a way where I can update it without using an external disc?
If you mean the iMac does not have an internal optical drive capable of reading DVDs, the only option requires another Mac with a DVD-capable drive and FireWire ports. Your iMac G3 will also require FireWire ports. Not all G3 iMacs have Firewire. FW started with the Summer 2000 models with 400mHz and faster processors.
With FireWire, you can use FireWire Target Disk mode to install from a retail OS install DVD in another Mac. If you supplemental info info tells us if you have another Mac with a DVD reader and the FW ports, we can walk you through the process.
If the iMac has a tray-loading drive, I'd forget it. They are very limited not only in the OS max (10.3.9) but also in RAM capability. Starting with the slot-loading iMac G3s, the max RAM increased to 1 GB (2 X 512MB modlules). Tiger likes 1GB RAM.
Understand that pre-Intel Macs are getting harder to use. Even with 10.4.11, your choice of browsers is limited (TenFourFox is the most viable option) and the G3s  rudimentary video hardware means web browsing will be choppy at best.
If you are in the USA, you can try calling the Apple Store (1-800-MY-APPLE) for an OS disk. As recently as Jan 20, someone posted here that they were able to buy Tiger by calling. It was not clear whether the disks were replacement system install/restore disks or full retail install, but it's a free call.
When you do "About this Mac" to check teh OS verion, also look at the processor speed and tell us what that says. That can help with recommendations for an upgrade path.

  • Using new wired keyboard (w/o numeric keypad) with Windows Vista

I have a 2008 Mac Pro and a Windows PC. They share the same monitor, keyboard and mouse via a KVM switch (I use the Belkin Flip DVI-D KVM Switch, model F1DG102D). My keyboard is the Apple wired keyboard with numeric keypad, which works fine with my Windows Vista PC, even with no Apple-specific Windows driver installed. My keyboard tray is pretty small, so I would like to get the new Apple wired keyboard which doesn't have a numeric keypad. I don't need the numeric keypad anyway. However, I will miss the home, end, page up, page down, and forward delete buttons. The Mac Pro has a way of simulating these keys. However, the key combinations to simulate these keys don't work in Windows Vista. My question is: how do I simulate these keys from Windows Vista? My guess is that possible options are:
    1. Use some Vista keyboard mapping software. If so, any idea what might work?
    OR
    2. Use Apple's keyboard driver for Windows Vista (32-bit). The keyboard comes with boot camp, but I don't use boot camp (since I have a separate Windows PC). How do I go about getting a standalone Apple keyboard driver without having to install boot camp?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi randman.
I have a similar problem but it seems there is no solution. The new wired keyboard is not event working properly with BOOTCAMP. Vista doesn't recognize the keyboard as Apple keyboard and even forcing the device manager to use the Apple keyboard driver is not working.

  • Startup keys with new Apple Keyboard and MacBook Pro

Upon powering up my Rev. A MBP, I hold down the OPTION key on the new Apple Keyboard to select my startup disk. Strangely, the startup went straight into the default startup disk that I have chosen previously. I didn't get to selection stage.
I tried with the old/white Apple Keyboard and my MBP keyboard and startup disk selector is A-Okay.
I hooked up the new keyboard to my new Mac mini and did the same thing and no problem.
Haven't tried with the rest of the startup keys like C or X yet with the MBP. Wonder is this a software bug between the MBP and keyboard.
    Anyone with similar experience?

Actually, startup keys sequences do work with the Apple Wireless Keyboard (the old white one). I know because I have been using it that way with my Macs, PPC and Intel ones.
I tried Command-V, Command-S, Option, T, C and Shift on the new keyboard with my Rev. A MBP and it goes go straight into the Apple logo.
Swapped back to the old Apple Keyboard with my MBP and tried the keys above and no problems whatever so.
Hooked up the new Apple Keyboard to my new Mac mini and did the same keys without problems.
So, my conclusion is there something between the new keyboard and Rev. A MBP. Maybe someone with similar setup should try wha I did and see if they face the same issues.
