Using non AAC Formats for 'Futureproof' music archive

My music collection is currently in lossy AAC format on my Imac with 80Gb hard drive. I would like to re-rip my c.d.s to a loseless format for future proofing and store on a new hard drive with such low price / gig. The idea would be to run a script converting them to AAC for current Imac / Ipod combo, but in future may script convert to Flac and or OGG or even WMA if I ever (doubtfully) leave the Apple fold.
Has anybody done similar here? Any advice? Flac or WAV, can I store all the useful metadata against WAV files or is this held in iTunes database files? Does anybody know of such scripts of batch conversions?

I can't tell you what to do, but I can tell you my experiences.
My library still had some albums ripped with iTunes 1.0, at 128 kbps MP3.
Then there were several CDs, ripped at 192 kbps MP3 and 128 kbps AAC.
I recently replaced the HD of my Mac for a larger and faster one, so plenty of room and time to standardize my collection.
I re-ripped my entire CD collection (modest, I think, about 60 discs) in Apple Lossless, stored it for archival purposes on an external HD and converted the whole lot to AAC 320 kbps.
At re-ripping, iTunes will ask if it's OK to replace the existing files. There the first problem arose. It will only do so if the names it gets from Gracenote on inserting the CD, exactly matches those of the library.
Looking on Doug's site, I found Copy Track Info to CD Tracks.
Perfect. All artwork and lyrics eventually were automatically copied to the re-ripped tracks. Also the Date Added, Ratings and Play Counts were preserved.
Cool!
After archiving all lossless files to an external HD, I converted them to AAC and deleted the Lossless files from my internal drive.
As for FLAC. iTunes doesn't support that format and I can't tell you if and how the metadata is stored (just don't know). The same applies to OGG.
WAV doesn't support tagging and you can't add artwork or lyrics to it (options are greyed out)
AIFF (also uncompressed like WAV) officially doesn't support tagging either, but iTunes attaches artwork to the file (as can seen by the increasing file size).
Hope this helps.

  • Mirroring iTunes for sound/music archive?

    Hi,
I'm currently working in a postproduction company for a German News Television station. We have recently changed to Final Cut.
We'd like to us iTunes for our music archive and this is where the problem starts:
Basically we'd like to be able to have a shared library folder for all of our 5 editing suites from which we can work at the same time. The folder would of course be on a network drive. This is important, as we'd like to have the same library accessible to everyone and being updated instantly whenever someone adds music to it.
Why we can’t just use the ‘shared music’ – option: We need to be able to feed the Information with tags manually that aren’t provided automatically by iTunes and we would like to have ONE library rather then 5 different ones. Plus only one of the editing suites is connected to the Internet, which is necessary for automatically downloading ID3-Tags.
We were thinking about external FireWire Harddrives which are synced every other week, which then is of course more work and we'd have to tell iTunes every time that new music has been added to the library folder.
It would be fantastic if anyone knows a way how to make this happen, a way to work around it or any another feasible solution.
    Bye,
    Sandro

You can have two iTunes libraries on your computer, or more if you wish. I have four on mine for various purposes, all in the same Mac OS X user account (you can also have multiple Mac OS X user accounts, each which its own iTunes library).
To create a new iTunes library, see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
Navigate to wherever you wish to create the new library (I'd suggest having a separate folder for it so that all the files are contained) and click the Create Library button. That will create a new, empty iTunes library. You can then use that library for your background music and sound effects. To switch back and forth between libraries, just again launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click the Choose Library button, and select the appropriate library.
BTW, are you familiar with SoundByte? It's software that simulates the functionality of the cartridge players used in many radio stations. I don't know if that would be of interest to you, but I thought I'd mention it.
    Regards.

  • When will apple begin to use non us banks for apple pay?

when will apple begin to use non us banks for apple pay?

Apple have not announced any dates for non-US rollout of Apple Pay as yet. They have to negotiate agreements with local banks and local branches of credit card companies in multiple countries, ensure they are in compliance with local laws and many other things before this can happen. It is going to take months at the very least I'd guess before you will see it even in major EU countries and longer for places like Asia and the Middle East. It will probably be rolled out in stages over the next year or two (or more) until most of the world has Apple Pay available.
It took 2+ years after its US debut for iTunes Music Store to spread to many other nations, and the video store was about 12-18 months plus as I recall. Apple Pay probably makes those negotiations look simple in comparison.

I have Video camera movies that are HD format.. I am doing editing work on them using Final Cut Pro, but using DV PAL format for the projects I am editing. When I then tried to copy my work done in FCP Project that's originally DV PAL , into a new FCP Project that is HD, and tried reconnect media with original HD movies (video), the sequence project got distorted for all the text, shapes used and all.. everything changed its orientation and scale.. Is there a way by which I can preserve my work done on DV PAL and switch it preserving its proportions, scale and orientation, but on a HD project sequence?? Appreciate your help and advice..

Yes.  A couple of ways that might work.
    First Way
What you need to do is load one of your hd clips in the viewer and edit into a new HD sequence.  Does it display correctionly?
OK, select the clip in the hd timeline and copy (command-c).  Now go to the HD sequence with the material that's distorted.  Select all (command-a) and paste attributes (option-v) and choose basic motion and distort.  That should maek things work.  What won't work is anything that you've adjusted as far as basic motion or distort in your PAL sequence.  That I'm pretty sure you'll have to redo.
    Second Way.
Choose your original PAL sequence and do a Media Manage changing the sequence preset to the appropriate HD paramenters with the media offline.  You then should be able to reconnect these clips with your original HD media.

  • What is the best format for itunes music to play via Airport Exress

    Hi,
My entire music collection on my itunes was either ripped from CD or purchased from itunes store.
I currently have the latest version of itunes software.
I stream my airtunes via ethernet (Devolo plugs one plugged into my router - the other downstairs plugged into my AX via ethernet cable)connected to electricty circuit, connected to my AX (802.11g) connected to a very good quality amp and speakers (all bi -wired cabling from amp to speakers).
Not all the time but there are certain songs that sound "tinny" to me, the music overshadows the lyrics and I need to play the tune quite loud just to get any feeling for the song. Jazz music also seems overly complex for the airtunes even when purchased from itunes. I was wondering if there is a specific file type or setting that would improve the sound quality ?
I'm not an aficionado but i would have thought there was enough quality to create a decent sound and I'm sure I have not set something up properly.

The editor of Stereophile magazine has tested an AE, and found that it was capable of bit-accurate output. For example, if iTunes has a 16/44.1 file, you will get an exact replica of that file streaming digitally via the AE.
Having said that, they have also concluded that Apple Lossless Compression is also bit-accurate. As such, if you were to rip your CD's using ALC, you will get a perfect digital copy when streaming through an AE. They will of course take up much more space than AAC or MP3.
I have just added a AE to my network, and find that the sound (when using its optical output) is exceedingly good when using ALC based files.
One additional bit of information though is that they tested the analog outputs of the AE, and in terms of the lab measurements found them to be poor. Lab measurements and what you actually hear may not always agree, but since the digital output is essentially transparent to the source, that is the route I have taken.
As for your situation, music purchased from iTunes is, at best, 256K AAC. Fine for ear buds, but probably not suitable for playback over a proper stereo system. And if you have left iTunes at its default settings, you are using 128K AAC for rips from your CD's. Again, quite unacceptable for serious listening.
The settings for importing are found at iTunes Preferences/Advanced/Importing. I would suggest making some test rips of the same music at different settings, including Apple Lossless, and see how those sound over your equipment.

  • Can I only use the itunes ID for the music and my other id for my computer and Iphone

Can I just use one Itunes id for Match and another Id for my apps on my phone and my Mac?

If I'm understanding your question correctly, no. iTunes Match is tied to an Apple ID and regional store. Once you sign into an Apple ID on a device and use iTunes Match it is not possible to switch between Apple IDs for 90 days. You will not be able to regularly update your apps.

  • What's the best format for streaming music via bluetooth?

I've got a really nice car stereo that I had installed a number of years ago. I just replaced the head unit with a Pioneer unit that allows me to stream music from my iPhone 6+. It supports A2DP.
Right now I've got my music encoded as MP3 files at 320 kbps.   Should that be sufficient or is there something about the A2DP profile that perhaps would make another format (like AAC) a better choice?
I just want this to sound as good as possible. Thanks for any advice.

Then adjust the equalizer settings on the head unit.  The difference in sound quality  between the formats would be negligible.

  • How to use non-standard port for vnc?

Our Windows users who use RDC to connect to their desktops from off-site come in on a non-standard port number. Part of our security setup.
I'd like to do the same with Mac users who use screen sharing and vnc to connect remotely.
How can I specify another port number at both ends to accomplish this?
I can find nothing in the Network Utility app, or in the KB.
Surely there's a short sequence of Terminal commands that will do this?

I haven't tried this so don't know whether it will work. But I think it will. Presuming the target machine is a Mac, see if editing its /etc/services file will do it. Find the two lines that start with "vnc-server" and change the port number there. Launch Terminal.app as an administratively privileged user, sudo pico /etc/services, ^w to search for vnc-server, make the changes, ^x to exit, y to save and overwrite. Also, you will need to have screen sharing enabled in the target machine's System Preferences' Sharing, and the authorized users defined there, too. Reboot. Now, on the remote client, assuming it is also a Mac, the user would type ⌘k in the Finder (or mouse to Finder > Go > Connect to Server), and enter something like vnc://123.45.67.89:55900 where you substitute the actual IP address or host name for where I have entered 123.45.67.89, and where you substitute the actual alternate port number where I have entered 55900. Of course, in the clients' Screen Sharing's Preferences, they should choose to encrypt the entire session, not just the login. Like I said, I haven't tried this because I just tunnel my vnc stuff through ssh, but I'm thinking that this should work.

  • How to use the date format for the given req.?

I have a requirement which should fetch the datas given by user. The user parameter is the date. The date will fetch the amount of the customer code for that particular month based on the date upto given by the user of that financial year.
If the user parameter is given as 200703(YYYYMM) it should fetch the datas of the financial year from 200604(YYYYMM) to 200703(YYYYMM). The logic is the user parameter year should fetch the datas of previous year till the user given date and the month should be also do the same. Please do the needfull oracle experts.

As i am new to oracle i need help from you experts, The year and the month as seperate columns both as different data type as number and varchar2. There is no date column in the table.

  • Using non-mac address for "reply to"

I want all my mail to go via mobile me so that it all messages, sent and received, will be stored online.
