Using objects with one fill to cut through another

Sorry for the clunky-description in the subject line. Not sure how to search for a solution to this, though it's probably pretty simple.
This is Illustrator CS3 on a Mac. Everything is on one layer. I used the white shapes as alterations to fine tune black objects beneath. I'd like to have them permanently intersect so I can be left with only the black shapes (for a single color screenprint). Is there a way to "collapse" the objects and instruct Illustrator to eliminate the white? I've tried everything in the Pathfinder palette without the results I'm after.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Brad

Hi Tman.
Thanks for the reply.
1. Yes, it'll be a 1-color silkscreen, ultimately.
2. Yup, all vector.
3. No, the gray background was simply there to show you guys the white objects I'd used to fine tune the black brushstrokes. It'll be deleted.
I see what you're saying. Because the white areas disappear without the background, their existence is inconsequential - once it becomes a PDF, it's just black and white anyhow.
I just didn't want to worry that *any* object was going to wind up on the screen, or that I had to blend the objects and erase the white ones.
Thanks!
Brad

  • CS3: Make mask using group with strokes, fills, multiple objects, etc

I am currently using CS3, and I have created 2 objects with gradient clipping masks on them, to go over a group (my logo). I am hoping to create a glass effect with these gradients over my logo.
The problem I am running into is that I cannot use my logo as a group to mask the gradient objects. I have attempted joining, combining, etc my logo group and making it a mask, but there are strokes inside that then mask as the fill shape.
Is there a way to mask, not unlike the clipping mask tool that is so easily used in Photoshop CS3?

    Is this any help?
To clarify this is what I want to achieve:
So that all the grey area is transparent.

  • Blend tool to objects with no fill (transparency)

Is it possible to create a blend using the blend tool with one of the objects to be blended being transparent (having no fill or outline)? If not, could someone please suggest an alternate solution? I know I can do something somewhat similar with gradients but I really like the level of control blend provides.
    Thanks much in advance
    Joe Stavitsky

You mean, opacity of the object I'm blending "from"? But the, wouldn't the object I blend "to" still be opaque?
    Thanks again
    Joe
    EDIT
Never mind, you're quite right - thanks so much!

  • Possible?Multi-Entity View Object with one Entity Object that is Read-only.

I know this sounds crazy, but I would like to create a multi-entity view object, where one entity object is based on a table in my application (we'll call it "Users", which basically stores the primary key for the person from the institutional people database), and the other table is a entity object based on a view of the institutional people database table (read only access), which we can call "People".
I know that since no updates will be done to the People table, it really should be a read-only View Object, but I would lose the ability to sort on attributes like Last Name, Hire date, etc, since those would be transient attributes in my ViewObject for the Users. By having People as an entity object, I can then create a multi entity view object and have the ability to join Users to People and be able to sort on the above mentioned fields (like Last Name).
The problem is that when I use the JDev (I'm currently using 10.1.2.1) AppModule BC4J tester, when I click on the multi-entity view object that I added to the AppModule it gives me an error:
oracle.jbo.RowCreateException) JBO-25017: Error while creating a new entity row for People.
    ----- LEVEL 1: DETAIL 0 -----
    (java.lang.InstantiationException) null
I have tried to change all the attributes to updateable in my entity object, but no create method, and I have tried to make them all read-only, but no effect, I get the same error (probably because the People view is read-only in my schema).
Is there a way to change the entity object so that it will not try to create a new row when it runs the Tester? So that the multi entity view object behaves more like a view link, but gives me the added bonus of being able to sort on the Last Name column from the People table?
Thanks for any help on this subject...at worst, I will have to use the view link method to get the job accomplished, but it would be "cooler" if this would work!
    Jeremy.

Steve, thanks for your quick response to my question.
To answer your questions, I was trying to create the Multi-entity View Object to give me more flexibility when working with my User table, and my People view. The flexibility I desired was that I would be able to sort my Users based on attributes in the People view. This is not possible when the there is only one Entity in my VO, and the People view data are all transient attributes, because they are not in the SQL statement.
Ultimately, after working with one of my colleagues, we decided to use the approach that you mentioned by creating a read-only VO with the SQL query we want to display to the user (contains both User and People data fields), and then use a different ViewObject when performing other actions on the User Table (such as inserts/updates/deletes). By using the setWhereClauseParam() method in the handleLifeCycle() for the JSP page, we should be able to navigate between the different View Objects, so that the user does not see any difference.
Thanks! Oh, and by the way, I have read your article you included before, and I have used it many times before to tune my View Objects! Thanks!

  • Can i use iCloud with one apple id but app store with another; especially on iOS 6?

My household has multiple devices.  I own iPhone and iPod, both on iOS 5.1.1, and iCloud (used for apps, iMessage, and backup.)
I almost never buy music, but I buy some apps.
My SO has iPhone (also on 5.1.1), and she uses my apple id for purchases (mostly kid apps.) She does not (yet) use iCloud (paranoid about it
She uses iMessage (with her own apple id.)
Anyway, I suppose at some point she would switch to iCloud too.  It is also likely that we would move to iOS 6 once it is released (me first, likely.)
I know that Apple does not allow transferring app ownership from one account to another, as well as splitting or merging accounts.
Question: would she be able to use her own ID for iCloud (photo stream, backups) but my ID for app purchases? (I like it, let me control app expenses.)
If any of you are using IOS 6 preview, can you try this scenario (different IDs for app store, backups, and iMessage.)
Unsure if iOS 6 feature set is already public - if not, let me know 5.1.1 situation.  Thanks!

    thank you, @randers4!
(sorry for using twitter notation - hope you would not mind.)
for other commenters (especially Tawnii) - I view Apple ID (which was before essentially Store ID) as a purse with money.  Money is shared in our family;  I don't like "get your own milk license, and mark your bottles" approach.
Currently my spouse uses her own ID for iMessage (and she does not use icloud for mail, calendar, reminders, etc - pretty much iMessage and iOS Store are only apps she uses), but we use same set of apps (mostly kid apps) on all of our devices (including iPad, which is used by our little daughter).  It does feel a little weird when purchases on one device appear on another (but this is an option which can be turned off.)  We almost never buy music or books from iTunes store.
iCloud backup for my devices uses my ID (which is same ID we use for Store.)  My spouse does not use iCloud backup.  I suppose Mountain Lion can give her incentive to use shared Photo stream, and perhaps bookmarks.
Just so you guys know, we live in a country which did not have App store permitted until recently, so it was not possible for my SO to obtain her own ID for purhasing apps, even if she wanted (my ID is U.S.-based, where I used to live before.)
I feel that Apple model works fine for individuals but does not work well for family environments - for example, I want to listen to music from both of our computers on our Apple TV, but it is not easy: I can share iTunes collection or iTunes Match music set to Apple TV, but only from one account.
And I also suppose our two-year old would not be able to use her own account, even though she is iOS user for about a year already (iPads work great for kids, we tried 50+ different apps and have our own set.)
Again, thank everybody for quick responces, this is my first time using Apple forums and I am very happy

  • Help using one path to cut/trim another

I haven't done much work in Illustrator, and I'm currently using CS4.  I'm trying to figure out how to do something simple, and AI is so counter-intuitive that I'm about to rip my hair out.
This is all that I'm trying to do:
I have two lines intersecting, and a circle (just a path, not a filled shape) smaller than the length of the lines, and centered on where they meet.  I'm trying to use the circle to cut out the portion of the lines within the circle, so I'm left with what's outside the circle.
That's it, that's all I'm trying to do.  I've clicked every button on the Pathfinder palette, I've tried making a compound path, I've tried making a clipping mask, I've tried using the scissor and knife tools, etc...  There's no guarantee I did these things correctly, but as I said, Illustrator is so counter-intuitive that for someone new to the application, they usually end up wanting to set the install discs on fire.
So, how can I use the circle to cut the lines?  I'd appreciate any help.

    Wade,
You're the one who jumped in here and, unprovoked, lambasted me for my comment.
My post was succinct and makes a strong point: Such a simple operation as that described causes untold confusion for a new user. Somewhat experienced users make suggestions, each exposing ridiculous caveats which render the "solutions" insufficient. It's a case-in-point demonstration of the weakness of Illustrator's Pathfinder features--for what is such a common and straightforward function in other drawing programs.
I'm not interested in your incessant personal attacks and insults that have nothing to do with the actual subject of the thread. Go find someone else to follow around like an attention-starved puppy.

  • Two View objects with one Entity object

    Hi
I have such a requirement that, I need to take some mandatory attributes of one table in one page and the remaining in following page. After clicking Submit in the second page, i need to insert data in to the table.
How to proceed with this ? When i click on next button of first page it is validating for all mandatory fields.
    Regds,

Use custom DataAction for the first page:
    package controller;
    import oracle.adf.controller.struts.actions.DataAction;
    import oracle.adf.controller.struts.actions.DataActionContext;
    public class Class1 extends DataAction
      protected void validateModelUpdates(DataActionContext actionContext)
         //super.validateModelUpdates(actionContext);
// put you custom validation here

  • How do I use icloud with one mac and two iphones

I have just got an iPhone 5.
My wife and I share a macbook pro
My wife has an iphone 4s and uses iCloud to sync photos etc.
I want to use iCloud too, so.....how do we use iCloud so:
    - when we each take photos on our phones they sync to our mac
    - our contacts sync (can we set preferences on our individual phones so we only get the contacts we want on our iPhones from a shared address book on the mac)
    - we have individual calendars
    Any advice much appreciated.
    Thank you.

If you want to share the same photo stream so both your photos sync to your mac via iCloud you'll have to share the same primary iCloud account.  Set this up in Settings>iCloud on both phones using the same Apple ID, and in System Preferences>iCloud on your Mac; then turn photo Stream to On.  If you want to also using iCloud to sync with your shared Address Book on your Mac, but keep your contacts separate, you'll have to create two contact groups in Address Book on your Mac - one for each of you - and drag copies of the appropriate contacts into each group.  Then turn iCloud syncing for Contacts to on on all your devices.  To view just your own contacts you'll have to open the Contacts app on each of your phones, tap Groups, then check only your own contact group to view.  When you add contacts on either phone, you'll have to add these contacts to the appropriate groups in Address Book on your Mac as you can't manage contact groups on your phone.
If you want to maintain your own calendars, the easiest thing to do is not to syncing your calendar with iCloud.  If you did, your calendars would be merged in iCal on your Mac and the merged calendar would appear on both phones.
The important thing to know is that when you share an iCloud account any data you sync with the account will be merged and appear on all devices sharing the account.  This will happen with your contacts too, but since you already have a shared Address Book on your Mac, it will stay up to date as you change/add/delete contacts on your phones.  And by using contact groups you can filter your view to just your own contacts.

  • HT5622 Two Apple devices, how can I use FaceTime with one ID?

I recently purchased a new IPad as I will be traveling. The reason for the new iPad was to be able to connect with my family through FaceTime. I have an Apple ID, can I use the same id on the new iPad and still connect through FaceTime? To me it sounds like I will be trying to connect to myself. Not sure hoe it will work? Any suggestions on how I can use my Apple ID without creating a new id?

You can't. It's like calling someone in another room using the same phone number from which you're calling.

  • How do i use objects from one class in anohter?

    Hey
I have two GUI classes ShowWhiteGUI and BasketGUI and then a control class ShowWhite. The control class calls all the method from anohter class's which the GUI classes are gonna use.

  • My Eye Dropper STILL does not work in CS5 while using Lion with one monitor. How can i fix this?!?

    Hello everyone!
This is my first post because i have grown very disgruntled at the fact that my eye dropper does not work my Premiere CS5. I would use the Ultra Key a lot but now I obviously can not really use it too well because of no eye dropper. I saw that this problem existed after the Lion update but this really should have been fixed by now. I am using only one monitor also. Is there a way to fix this or is this still known to be broken? I paid good money for CS5 and would be very upset if the only way around this is to pay MORE money to upgrade to CS5.5. Thanks.

Thanks for the response Stephen! I find this very bad on Adobe's part though if they do not feel obligated to fix CS5 for Lion. Eye dropper is a major part of Premiere and i am going to be very dissapointed if they do not fix that. With the amount of money the Suite costs, they definitly should make sure it runs well for quite a few years. I would expect a copy of CS4 to be able to work too. If they do not fix CS5 all because the OS has changed basically tells me that every 2 years or so, they stop caring about their product.
Sorry i sound so bitter about this but it has really hurt my workflow. Ultra key is great and something that FCP does not have so it has the edge in that respect, but now i can not even properly use it. I have to go into After Effects with the same clip, use that eyedropper to get the correct color # and then copy and paste the # into Ultra Key in Premiere which is very very annoying and slows down my system quite a bit.
So basically, they are probably not going to ever fix this? Thanks again

  • Using TimeMachine with one Mac and two HDD

    Hi
I was wondering if the following can be done with out loosing data and with out confusing TimeMachine:
Using one mac and with time machine going back and forth between 2 external HDD ?
in order to have 2 TimeMachine HDD (one at home and one on the move)
Did one of you did try this ?
If yes is it working fine ?
Thanks for sharing your feed back
    Regards

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
    Yes, that works fine.
The first backup to each drive will, of course, be a full one.
Thereafter, each backup will be an "incremental" one, of all the changes that have been made to your system since the last backup +*to that drive.+*
Of course, if you create a file at home, run a backup, then change the file and run another backup, your "home" backup will have both versions of that file. If you then do a backup to the other drive, it will only have the new version.
The more changes you make between drive swaps, the longer the first backup after the swap will be, since there are more changes to "catch up" with. In some cases, the volume of changes may cause Time Machine to do a "deep traversal," with a longer than usual "Calculating Changes" phase, to figure out what's changed and needs to be backed up.

  • Overlap Buttons? Can you select 2 objects with one click?

Hi I am trying to create a menu of a map for a client. They would like a text list of cities down one side and also dots over each city on the map.
I have set the highlite groups to change the colour of the text but I would like to also set the menu so that when selecting the city in the the text area the coresponding dot over the city changes as well?
As the cities are all ove the place and some quite close together i keep getting the buttons overlapping. Ive tried merging the layers so text and dot are together but it keeps overlapping and im not sure how, if i can, get it working?

    Hi Dave,
The only way to do this with Encore that I know is to use a series of duplicate menus and the auto-activate feature.
So when the audience navigates to a particular city's text, the auto-activate feature automatically executes a link to an exact duplicate of the menu they were just navigating, and displays the highlighted city text and a highlighted city dot. The dot won't actually be part of the button on the new menu, but it will look like it is.
This technique involves careful pre-planning and a lot of linking work. It is easy to get lost in the links if you don't have a proper flowchart drawn on paper and if you don't use good menu-naming conventions.
