Using old Base Station for Printer??

Just upgraded to a new AEBS so I can plug in a HD for back ups.
I'd like to use my old Base Station to plug in my printer (it needs to be in another room to keep the wife happy)
Is this possible or do I need an Airport Express for that?
Thanks,
David

The round 802.11b/g AEBS supports a single compatible USB printer.
The AEBS can not join a wireless network as a client. You will need to use WDS to wirelessly connect the 2 AEBS. This will force your new AEBS to operate in 802.11g mode. Also the WDS link will cut your available bandwidth in half. So the best wireless bandwidth you would see is 27 Mbps. Quite a lot less than the maximum offered by 802.11n.

  • Problems swapping out old Base Station for New ABE802.11n

I purchased a new AirPort Extreme w/ 802.11n to replace my old dome shaped base station extreme but have been unable to get new AirPort to work. Network is set up as follows: DSL modem connects to base station to create a wireless network. Ethernet port out of basestation connects to wired network. An AExpress located in another part of house connects to network via ethernet and is also set to create a wireless network with identical name, password as one created by Base Station, thereby extending the range of the wireless network (and allowing streaming of iTunes over in-house stereo system).
This set up worked perfectly with the old dome base station, but I have been unable to get new AirPort to create a functioning wireless network. It creates the network, but is then unable to connect to the internet. The wired network is working, and the AExpress portion of the wireless network is working, so I know its not my DSL connection.
Things I have tried: setting up the new APExtreme with the configuration file from the old base station (fail), setting the new APExtreme up as a new network, with new name (fail), turning off the AExpress and creating a new network with the APExtreme (fail). In every instance I get a network, but am unable to connect to the internet. The DSL modem is assigning IP addresses, so I've set the APExtreme up in bridge mode, although I tried the other DHCP settings and using PPPoE option, also with no luck.
Any guidance or insights would be appreciated.

Nevermind - I got it to work by changing from bridge mode to having the Base Station assign IP addresses. Airport Utility says that this is a problem, but I now have a fully functional wireless network.

  • SBC dsl wireless modem talk to my Base station for printing?

I have no problems just printing through my Apple base station. I also use a wireless SBC dsl modem for Internet service. My problem: When I'm using my SBC dsl on the Internet, I have to print by switching from my "2wire175" network to the Apple network, print my page, then switch back, hoping I'm still on-site.
How do I either: attach my HP550 to the SBC dsl modem OR get my Base station to talk with my SBC modem. Or ........???
    Charlie

To get your Base Station to "talk" to your 2Wire wireless router, you will need to:
    - connect to the Airport Base Station's wireless network, run the Airport Admin Utility, then (1) under the Airport tab, turn the transmitter power down all the way since you don't really need to have two base stations running, and (2) under the Network tab, uncheck the box to "Distribute IP addresses". Then update settings to the Base Station.
    - cable the LAN port of the Base Station to one of the LAN ports on the 2Wire router
    - then restart all wireless Macs, and connect to the 2Wire wireless router. The printer connected to the Base Station will now be accessible.

  • Using a Airport Express Base Station for wireless printing.

Using a Airport Express Base Station for wireless printing. Got a new DSL router yesterday. Our old one we did not have password protected. The new one is. I can't figure out how to get the base station to connect with the new router.

thanks for the reply,   I couldn't connect with the base station.  The solution (thank you apple genius bar) was to do a soft rest of the unit which allowed and ethernet connectiont to be established.  Took the genius bar gy about ten min (and 2 attempts) to get the base station reconfigured.  Got home and it worked like a charm.  Would have never known what he knew.  Thank you genius bar.  Thank you for taking time to respond.

If you mean the hexidecimal equivalent of the alphanumeric password, then you can find this via the AirPort Utility, as follows:
AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup
On the AirPort Utility's menubar select Base Station > Equivalent Network Password

  • Combining old base stations to strengthen network?

    Hi
I recently purchased an Airport Extreme base station for my school. We currently have two old base stations.
I'd like to set up a triangular network using the three of these. Is this possible? Will the old base stations work with the Extreme?
Can someone point me to some documentation to achieve this --
Won't the older base stations cause the Extreme to default to a slower speed?
    Thanks for any help

Daniel, If the older bases are 802.11b compliant (Slower) then the newer 802.11g compliant (Faster) like the Airport Extreme and Express which happen to handle either protocall.
You can extend your Network if your older Routers are WDS compliant.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108040
Deepending on several factors will determine exactly what your network is capable of. I will give you a couple of links that should help you sort through and decide the way you want to extend.
    http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/
The link above shows you another way to extend your Network with Airport Extreme Base and Omni Directional Antenna.
Like I said there are several options for you to decide which way to go.
    http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/
Toward the bottom of the above link you will see another option to extend.
Last but not least is another option that Apple gives for Schools.

    Good Luck on your choice.

  • What do I do with my old base station?

I am getting the new base station so I can have network storage - at the moment I have the current base station. What should I do with the old base station when I get the new one? Is there some way I can use it? Is it possible to use it to boost the signal in my home (which is a little erratic from time to time when using Airtunes with my airport expresses)?

Currently it looks like the new AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does not support WDS so your only option is to use Ethernet to link the 2 base stations to extend the wireless network. Of course any devices connected to your old AEBS would be limited to 802.11g speeds.

  • I have an iPad 2 and used old Apple ID for iBook app; now it wants to upgrade but I have a new Apple ID, how can I make certain I don't lose any data in my iBooks?

I have an iPad 2 and used old Apple ID for iBook app; now it wants to upgrade iBook but it is "stuck" on my old ID, yet I already created a new ID but it won't let me update the App.  I have everything backed up on my MacBook so if I delete iBooks on my iPad and retrieve the App under my new ID and then sync with my MacBook, will I still have all of the books, etc.?

Your purchases are tied to your Apple ID. If you bought all of the books with the old ID then AFAIK you will have to continue to use that ID in order to continue to sync those books to the iPad.
You have to update the app with the old ID so I don't see how you could keep the books with the new ID. Maybe I am wrong about this, but someone else will chime in I'm sure and correct me if I am wrong.

  • Use dot matrix printers for printing text reports in Reports 10g

In Forms 6i, customers had the option to use dot matrix printers for printing text reports.
I believe, from 9i onwards, text based reports aren’t supported and instead HTML/PDF,DOC,RTF reports are supported which are not text based and use modern day printers.
Is it still possible to use text printers ??

  • Using a Base Station (Graphite) to receive signal

I have a Graphite Base Station and was wondering if anyone knew of a way to use it to connect to a wireless network, essentially using it as an Airport card. We have wireless access in our community but I have a bit of trouble connecting inside our house sometimes and would like to connect the Base Station to our computer using Ethernet and then use the Base Station to receive the signal in a better location. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry but that is not possible.
The graphite AirPort base station (ABS) will not operate as a wireless client in any way.

  • HT3728 I do not need another wireless network but want to use the airport express for printer access only.  Can this be done and how?

You can configure the AirPort Expess to "Join a wireless network" and enable the Ethernet port so that Ethernet devices will be able to connect.
In order to print from the iOS devices, you will need to have an application like Printopia installed on your Mac. The Mac must be active when you want to print.
More details here: Printopia - AirPrint to Any Printer - Print from iPad - Print from iPhone ...
There is a free trial available for Printopia, so make sure that it will work before you buy the AirPort Express.

You don't have to do anything to the netgear.. the Express cannot wirelessly extend non-apple networks. You must plug the Express in by ethernet and create a new wireless network.. this can be the same name (SSID) and security as the netgear so it can become a roaming network.

  • What is the best wireless base station for a clamshell?

i want to purchase a wireless base station for my clamshell but am unsure on which apple product to buy. do you recommend the airport extreme or just the original airport. i've heard from some people that the extreme doesnt' work that well.

The perks of the airport extreme base station are Wireless B/G/N compatibility as well as a USB port for sharing external harddrives, printers, etc.
Your ibook is only compatible with Wireless B networks, so there is no sense in paying for G/N compatibility unless you really need it. The same holds true for the USB port in my opinion. Unless you need it why pay for it.
The original airport base stations are cheaper, and they do exactly what you need them to do.
    That's my two cents

  • Using apple base station now, but the other 3 windows based computers couldn't find the printer connected to apple base station

When I am trying to add a new printer on my iMac, the search result will show:
    HP Photosmart C6200 series
and there is no problem to add this printer to the iMac.
But when I am trying to add a new printer on my other windows based computers, the search result will show nothing. So I shared the printer on my iMac, and the search result will show:
    HP Photosmart C6200 series @ XXXXX's iMac
and there is no problem to add this shared iMac printer to the windows based computers.
I just don't understand. Can anyone explain this to me?
    Thanks a lot.
    Karen

You and at least one other that I know of locally. All this happened after the latest Airport update.
Interestingly, last week, three of us who use Mac laptops were unceremoniously dumped from our small office network's wireless router (non-Apple). When we tried to reconnect it kept asking for a password - none of the PC users are having this problem - and I HATE that!! Before this we all connected immediately with no problems.
I'm still running my home-based Airport Extreme Base Station and Airport Express on a non-passworded network - the only way we can get online, still.
Hope Apple wakes up and realizes there are a few problems with this release.
    Rachel.

  • Using 2 Base Stations (old g and new n versions)

I have an old g version base station and would like to know if it can still be used in the network if I purchase the new n version to act as the main base station?
I intend to plug the g version by cable into an old PowerPC G4 (in another room) and connect it to the new n base station wireless network. Will this work?
    Thank you.

Yes, but because of the older AirPort unit I believe you'll have to configure your network in a "WDS" configuration. By default AirPort Utility won't show you that choice, but if you hold down an "option" key when you pull down the "Wireless Mode" list, you'll see it.
