Using old Extreme as Wireless Extension

Have the new Extreme & have it setup as wireless base. Planning to use old Extreme as extension. I understand I need to enable the new Extreme to be extended before I can configure the old one. Cannot find the selection in Aorport Utility to allow the extention.
Wondering if this is changed on the new Express.

The question I have is how to enable the new Extreme to allow the wireless network to be extended regardless of which device (an Apple Express or the 2 year old Extreme) I decide to use.
This is not necessary. The setting that you remember is no longer required.
With the old AirPort Extreme powered on, hold in the reset button for 7-8 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear.
Just below that, click directly on AirPort Extreme.  The example below shows an AirPort Express. You will see AirPort Extreme in your case.
AirPort Setup will open up automatically and take minute to analyze the network, then announce the old Extreme will be configured to extend the new Extreme network
Enter a device name that you want to use for the old Extreme and click Next
AirPort Setup will take a minute to configure everything. When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.
Move the old Extreme to a location that is about half the distance between the new Extremes and general area that needs more wireless signal coverage and power it up. You should be all set.

  • Using older Extreme as a wifi extender with new tower extreme

Howdy.  Trying to set up extended WiFi and having a terrible time.  Have new extreme tower as base station as plugged in to cable modem.  Trying to use Los Extreme as extender.  Took both to Apple store and asked for help.  Tech guy said no problem and configured it.  I put in same wifi password and hoped I would have plug and play but to no avail.  Have used utility to rename old extreme the same as new new extreme and with the same password.  No luck.  Problem is I do not know enough about "advanced" settings in utility to make this happen.  Have 2 iPads and two iPhones (wife and I) plus a LENOVO DESKTOP.  any suggestions would be helpful.  Thanks.

Trying to use Los Extreme as extender.
Is this another "tower" version of the AirPort Extreme, or a previous "flat, square" version, or an older "round' or "dome" shaped AirPort Extreme?
Trying to set up extended WiF
Will the old Extreme "extend the network by connecting too the new AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection? (highly recommended for best performance).......or......are you planning to try to use the old Extreme to wirelessly extend the network?
is the "new" AirPort Extreme that you have set up and working correctly at this time?
If your old Extreme is compatible with new version of the Extreme, it is easier for most users to use an iPad or iPhone to configure the setup.....but a Mac could  be used as well.
Do you know what operating system the Mac is using?  If not, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen and then click About This Mac. Post back with the OS X Version that you see there.

  • I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use?

I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use? Essentially having two wifi connection off the same network? If so how do I set this up?

Extending using a wireless connection always results in a performance compromise.
If the Express is going to extend using a wireless connection, then the Express will need to be located about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the general area where you need more wireless coverage. The more that you have line-of-sight between the Extreme and Express, the better the network will operate.
Remember......the Express can only "extend" the quality and signal speed that it receives, so it needs to be located where it can get a very good signal from the Extreme. Although Apple cleverly uses the term "extend", a more accurate term for the Express would be "repeater".
If the Express will extend by connecting to the Extreme using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection......highly recommended for best performance.....then the Express can be located exactly where you need more wireless coverage. There is no signal loss at all through the Ethernet cable, so the Express gets a full speed signal no matter where it might be located.
Post back to let us know which way to you want to go.

  • Can't print wirelessly with HP 7410 printer using Airport Extreme

I've got 3 Macs (2 laptops, one desktop) that I was using successfully with my wireless HP 7410 all in one printer using my old Airport Base (snow) Station (822 b & g). Just upgraded for a variety of reasons to the new Airport Extreme Base station and I have NOT been able to get the printer to print wirelessly.
I have tried all available normal methods, including, but not limited to:
    1) resetting and restarting the printer and computer
    2) installing new printer software, including driver
    3) deleting and reinstalling printers using the "print and fax" system preference
    4) using the printer on a non-secure network
    5) setting up the printer to connect via IPP and LPP
The end result of all of this is that the printer is attached to the network, but the computer (any of the 3) cannot connect to the printer. When I run the HP setup assistant, it cannot "find" the printer.
Everything was working perfectly before I "upgraded." Why am I not able to print with the new base station?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same proble trying to print. I have a Mac and 2 PC laptops. I tried to print to three different printers and it will not work. I called Apple support and I was told that it was set up and configured correctly, that it ust be my firewall blocking the printer. I'm at a loss after $179.00 and three hours of trying to get it to work.

  • HT4145 Airport Extreme wireless extension VS. TP-Link PowerLine Network extension

I can install either an additional Airport Extreme to extend my network or a TP-Link PowerLine extension. I currently have a DLink network extender with moderate success. Does anyone have experience with the power line extension technology? Does it beat the connectivity of two wireless devices? With the current DLink method it does allow 2.4 and 5g but we end up with 3 SSIDs and thats confusing to the family. Or maybe I should leave the whole mess alone? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, Mark

You are always better sticking to one brand for wireless repeater.. since apple cannot extend dlink wireless nor the dlink the apple wireless, you are far better keeping wireless just apple or dlink.
Powerline adapters are a good method to avoid the issues with wireless repeater.. namely extremely slow wireless.. since repeating wireless adds huge amounts of latency into the wireless connection.
Problem with powerline (EOP) is they are dependent on the house wiring and it varies from house to house. Just like wireless it is not able to give guaranteed throughput (only ethernet can do that). It some cases eg wiring on different circuits that passes through a set of breakers.. will simply not work at all or so poorly as to not fix the problem. But if you have the two points on a ring main where there is a direct wired connection it can work extremely well. It will end up far more robust as it is not subject to the same level of voodoo and gremlins as wireless. ie if it works well the day you install it.. it tends to keep working the same thereafter.
So there is just one way to find out.. buy a pair and try them. You must use a power point.. no powerboard as the current breaker on the power board kills the signal. Some models come with piggy back connectors.
At the other end you can setup another wireless router in bridge and create a roaming network using the same SSID as the main wireless.. this then stops the confusion. Albeit roaming does not always work as well as the name suggests. Some devices swap "towers" with ease .. just like your mobile phone.. whereas others attach themselves to the AP they first connect to and refuse to disconnect. (without a swift kick at least).
Your Dlink could be made more home friendly by using roaming as well.. to prevent having multiple SSID. But the quality of repeated wireless is still poorer than single point AP with wired connection.

  • Can you use airport extreme as a bridge to netgear wdnr4500 wireless router

can you use airport extreme as a bridge with a netgear  wndr4500 router.I need to extend my wireless connections to the other side of the house

can you use airport extreme as a bridge with a netgear  wndr4500 router.
This is extremely unlikely. The AirPort Extreme can provide this function with other Apple routers, but as far we know, it is not compatible with products from other manufacturers for this purpose.
Suggest that you use a Netgear product for the best chance of compatibility.

  • Using a wire connected mac as wireless base-station by using airport extreme card

Is it possible to use a mac as wireless"base-station" for a iPhone by using an airport extreme card , if the mac is connected only by wire?
I created a network on my mac and my iPhone is connected to it, but it says the network is not connected to internet.
So can I connect the airport extreme card on my mac to the ethernet of my mac by changing the network settings on my mac?
If not, is there another way?

ok, i got the answer from another discussion. http://computers.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-share-your-macs-internet-connecti on--mac-60309

  • Used Airport Extreme Show Old Location

I bought a used Airport Extreme 802.11ac on eBay. Now using any location services on Safari or Apple Maps shows me at the location of the seller. I have tried going into Skyhook and giving them its MAC address and my correct log/lat, but it has not helped. They say it should take effect immediately in most cases, but so far it has had no efffect.
Our iPhones pick up the correct location, so I have tried connecting my MacBook, and iPads to an iPhone's personal hotspot and also tried leaving both of our iPhones running both Apple and Google maps all day, and again this has not helped.
Is it just going to take a very long time for the databases that have that used Airport's MAC listed at the old location to finally pick up the new one?
Thanks for any and all advice.

Well, after waiting 4+ weeks I called Apple Support. (Luckily the Airport Extreme I bought on eBay was new/open box and with my dated proof of purchase Apple let me register it for the remaining warranty period. I mislabeled the original question as Used) A really helpful support person (like nearly every one at Apple I had encountered) worked with me.
We reset it again to factory settings, checked that my ISP provided Arris cable/WIFI router 's network showed my correct location (which it did) without the Airport connected,  then reconnected the Airport Extreme. But as soon as we reconnected it, both the Arris and Airport WIFI networks showed me back in the completely incorrect location. My support person consulted with another and they concluded that they needed to swap it out for a replacement, that this was not normal behavior after a reset to factory specs.
The replacement arrived today, and after setup immediately reported my correct location.

  • I am using an Airport Extreme for wireless and a Netgear VPN Switch for wired connections.  How do I get the two networks to connect?

I am using an Airport Extreme for wireless and also have a Netgear VPN Switch (FV5318) for internal wired ethernet connections.  How do I get the two networks to connect to each other?

Tesserax, I would like to keep the Airport Extreme in nplace before the Netgear FVS318 switch because I am using all of the 8 ethernet outputs distributed to 8 differerent locationsl  This way I can just use one of the LAN outputs from the Airport to feed the FVS318.  Here is what I think I am hearing you say:
Tne reason why the wired and wireless devices are not communicating is because the FVS318G is also a DHCP server and in conflict with the AEBS.
To remedy the situastion here is probably what I need to do in order:
    1. Change the LAN IP Address of the Netgear FVS318G to be the same subnet of the Airport Extreme.
    2. Then, disable the Netgear FVS318G as a DHCP server.
    3. Make sure the ethernet cable from the LAN port of the Airport Extreme connectis to the LAN port of the Netgear FVS318G.
    4. Restart everything.
Can you provide me the steps I need to take to get the right IP addresses from the Airport Extreme to put into the Netgear to fix the conflict?  I have the Airport Utility.  I also have two airport express hot spots, and two Apple TVs in addition to computers attached to the 8 ethernet lines.
    Thank you.
    Steve

Thanks for the info.  On your Mac......
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the picture of the AirPort Extreme
Click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window that appears
Edit/backspace out the Wireless Network Name and type in a new name that you want to use
Click Update at the lower right of the window
Wait a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart
    Close AirPort Utility
The new network that you named will use the same network password that you set up originally.

  • Use old express and extreme inside of "n" network?

I currently have an old extreme and express that connects my house to my parents so they can "share" my internet. The connection is ok but I plan on purchasing a new extreme "n" and express "n" to replace them mainly for range and better speed so I can utilize a time machine air disk. My mom's pc uses "g" only so I still need to maintain a "g" connection but I'm afraid I'll lose the speed and range of "n" if I enable "g". I have the old extreme and express to work with, can I plug the old extreme into my express at my parent's house and run a smaller "g" network inside of my n network? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tom

...can I plug the old extreme into my express at my parent's house and run a smaller "g" network inside of my n network?
Since the AirPort Express (AX) only has a single Ethernet port, this is not possible.
However you can connect the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to the ISP's modem and then connect the AX to one of the LAN ports on the AEBS.

  • HT4259 Q: Can I use an older Airport Express-g router (not -n) to extend my Airport Extreme-n wireless network? If Yes, are the instructions the same as for adding an Airport Express-n router?

Q: Can I use my older Airport Express-g router (not -n) to extend my Airport Extreme-n wireless network? If Yes, Are the instructions the same as for adding an Airport Express-n router?

If you want to extend, using wireless only, the 802.11g Express doesn't support this.
However, if you want to use bridge mode over Ethernet or Powerline adapters then this is supported.

  • Unplugging the old extreme and plugging in the new 802.11n

I had trouble getting the new exteme to work like the old one. I got WPA2 security to work but not the old extreme. I spoke with an apple tech. We reset both stations, established the new network, then joined the extreme to that and everything works fine now.
    Two caveats:
The new 802.11n will not support extending the range and joining a wireless network (as in using the extreme for Itunes) at the same time. It is either one or the other and not both as before. This might be fixed in the future.
The 2. is this- is the old airport extreme base station just a paperweight now or is there a some useful thing it can do in the new setup (maybe extend the range of the network?)
I definitely notice faster internet connections with the new extreme base station.

You could set up a Dual Band network.
    It means that there is one big network but with two base stations;
I have one supporting 802.11g 2.4Ghz clients and another running as 802.11n only on 5ghz.
You actually get more network bandwidth. It is backwards compatible too. So Airtunes and WDS are supported.
    There's a thread on it.

  • HT4199 libratone live set up using airport extreme

The instructions for setting up the Libratone live speakers to the router, asks that you press the WPS button but there is no WPS button on the Aiport Extreme. Therefore does anyone know how I set up the Libratone speaker using Airport Extreme?

It would be neat though, to be able to connect
wirelessly on my Dell WinXP laptop over this dial-up
connection at home, the few times I'm going to use
it. So I thought eBaying one of those nice "old"
hockey puck Airport Extremes with built-in 56k
    modem.
    That should work.
From what I understood, the AE doesn't have a
    web-based configuration interface, like most
broadband routers have, but one needs to configure it
    installing a software utility, right?
    Correct
    Being in a
Windows only environment, will I be able to configure
my Airport Extreme-to-be using the Windows software
    on
    <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75422>
    Yes.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport42forwindows.html
? Does anyone of you have any experience with this?
    Yes
If so, could you reassure me that this is actually a
    feasible idea?
    Yes if does work.
Does the AE dial-in automatically whenever you're
generating traffic, by the way, or do you still have
    to establish the connection manually?
You can configure it that way, but it is easier to use Jon Sevy's Java utility.
Jon Sevy has a Java Utility for this purpose.
You will need Java in order to run the utility
