Using Old First Generation Firewire iPod With Laptop USB

I was hoping that someone could help me out here.
I have an old 1st generation iPod that I bought back in 2003. It holds 10G. It used the Firewire cable, but now I have a Dell Inspiron laptop that has only USB. I tried to plug in this iPod using a USB/Firewire hub, but the device is not recognized by iTunes and furthermore, the iPod does not seem to respond with the "Do Not Disconnect" message. It seems like there's no communication at all. My questions are the following:
1) Can a 1st generation iPod be recognized in iTunes?
2) Can I use a USB/Firewire hub to connect my iPod to the USB?
I really don't want this 1st generation iPod to go to waste! I hope I can still use it with up-to-date technology.
Anyone care to lend me some assistance as to what I can do to make it work with USB?
Thanks a lot for your support.

A firewire iPod isn't going to work with USB so you
can drop that idea. However, your notebook has a PC
Card slot, right? If so, you should be able to find a
FireWire PC Card which will let you sync your iPod
with the notebook.
Thank you Chris and dwb. Your feedback is very valuable. Chris, thanks for reassuring me that iTunes will still recognize my OOLLLDDD iPod. Dwb, thanks for referring me to the PCMCIA Firewire card.
Take care.

I have an old (first generation) iMac that I still use sometimes for the applications that are on it. I was using it yesterday and unfortunately had a power cut. I went to turn it on today, and nothing at all happens. It's as though no power is getting to it. I've checked the obvious things, changed the fuse, tried different cables, poked paperclips in reset holes, but nothing doing. I wonder if there is anyone who knows what might be wrong. I was hoping to get some of its content transferred soon, but I'm guessing that can't be done if it can't be started up. Many thanks, if you can help

    Hello,
    >It's as though no power is getting to it.
Would it be correct to assume that no sounds at all can be heard? Also, no lights, not even green or amber at the power button?
    >unfortunately had a power cut.
Was it possibly a power cut in connection with a thunderstorm? Any other evidence of higher than normal voltages (light bulbs, et cetera)? Has the line voltage been checked (measured with an appropriate voltmeter/multimeter)?
If necessary, it would be possible to remove the hard drive, and then connect it to an external IDE/ATA to USB adapter (example below). That way you could gain access to files on the hard disk from another computer.

I have to change my apple ID because I'm changing my email address. (I have a Comcast address and am switching to U-verse) I'm worried that when I do, I'll no longer be able to use my first generation apple tv unless I change the apple ID there as well. I'm also trying to find out if changing my apple ID is going to interfere with getting my itunes content on my computer and my iphone.  Does anyone know how this works??

My iTunes appleID is an old defunct e-mail address - it does not have to be functional.
Do what Winston says to ensure you keep getting correspondence related to that ID.

  • How to: Force-sync a first generation Apple TV with iTunes 12

For anyone else out there who's still using a first generation Apple TV and iTunes 12 and realized there's no longer an option to "force" the device to sync, I have a work around.
    Background
With my first generation Apple TV, I "manually" manage the content stored on the device. As well, I don't add content movie-by-movie (song-by-song, etc.). Instead, I have three playlists (Movies, TV Shows, and Music) that I then sync to the Apple TV. The problem is, even pre-iTunes 12, modifying the content of a playlist didn't trigger iTunes to offer to "sync" the device (I don't think it was smart enough to deal with the EOL first generation Apple TV in terms of playlist content changes). But, at least with pre-iTunes 12, you were able to right-click on the device in the sidebar and this would bring up a contextual message with "Sync" as one of the options. So, even though the "Sync" option was greyed-out in the main iTunes window, you could still initiate the sync via the contextual menu (thus "force syncing" the device with iTunes). But, with iTunes 12, this contextual menu has been removed (right clicking does nothing) and thus the ability to "force sync" is gone.
    Solution
After trying many different options to get the first generation Apple TV to sync with iTunes (after updating the content of a synced playlist), this is the only solution I've come up with that works:
    1. Create a playlist called "ATV Force Sync".
    2. Put a single movie in the playlist (I used a short, 10 second video, but I'm sure you could also use a song or any other media—just use something that is short and you don't care if it's on or off the device).
    3. To "force sync" the Apple TV, iTunes > Apple TV > Settings > Movies > Sync Playlist, check the checkbox beside the "ATV Force Sync" playlist. This will then enable the Sync"button and you can now force the Apple TV to sync with iTunes (it'll sync the "ATV Force Sync" playlist, but also sync any changes to any other playlist the Apple TV is set to sync with). Then, the next time you want to force sync (i.e., if you've updated the content in a playlist you want to sync), just uncheck the checkbox beside the "ATV Force Sync" playlist, and the Sync button will be enabled again (and so on, enabling/disabling the "ATV Force Sync" every time you want to force-sync the device).
Anyway, it's not an ideal solution, but at least it works. I've filed a bug report with Apple, but let's be honest, I don't think supporting the first generation Apple TV is on their "to do" list anymore. <G>
Hope this helps someone else out there!
    Kristin.

Hi minjak—I'll see if I can help?
Has the Apple TV ever been connected to iTunes at all (on that, or another computer)? From the sounds of it, the ATV has already been "paired" with an iTunes library, thus it's not (and won't) show up in your current version of iTunes.
So, here's what I'd suggest. On your Apple TV, do the following…
Go to Settings > Computers > Select iTunes Library (or something like that—I don't remember 100% what the option is called as I don't have the screen in front of me right now) and select "Disconnect".
This should remove and "synced" or "paired" computer (iTunes) from your ATV.
Then, re-sync it back up to your version of iTunes. You have to do something like this…
On your ATV, go to Settings > Computers > Connect to iTunes and a passcode should display on your screen. Then, go to iTunes, and the ATV should appear (give it about 15-20 seconds). If it does, select it and enter the passcode showing on the ATV. This should re-sync the ATV to your copy of iTunes.
Make sure both the computer and Apple TV are on the same internal network. And if possible, connect the Apple TV to the network via ethernet (rather than WiFi). Again, make sure the Apple TV is "online" and connected to the same network at the computer running iTunes.
If all works, you should see the Apple TV appear in iTunes, something like this (i.e., there's now a small Apple TV icon at the right end of the row of icons along the top)…
Anyway, have a go at the instructions above and let me know what happens, and we can go from there!
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

  • How do I control a first generation airport express with 10.8.2?

How do I control a first generation airport express with 10.8.2?
I have an old airport express that one of my machines running mountain lion will not support.  If I upgrade all of my systems to mountain lion, is there any way I can still control and configure the airport express?

You may need Airport Utility v. 5.6

It does work with Mountain Lion.

  • First generation of iPod!?!

I have a question. there are still applying for the first generation of iPod, because many application requests a configuration iOS 4.0...

Not all applications require iOS 4, I have several that only require iOS 3.
If you want to use an apllication that requires iOS 4, then you need to buy a newer iPod. Sorry, that's all there is to it.
Not sure what your question is though!

The devices are not designed for transfer of that kind.  Use Photo Stream as suggested by another poster, or transfer photos to your computer (a good idea anyway since they will be lost if your device needs to be reset), then use iTunes to sync them to the other devices.

  • Can I use my first generation iPod on a Windows PC computer?

  • Using old iPhone as an iPod

I replaced my original iPhone with the second generation Model 3G. I want to use the old one as an iPod. I have a problem with iTunes. It recognizes the old iPhone as my 3G model. How can I sync both on the same computer without getting both screwed up? (I want to give the old one to a family member to use it as an iPod). Would I have no problem on a different computer (with iTunes).
The AT&T store removed the sim card; the old iPod apps seem to work OK, even those apps that use my WiFi.

Follow the directions here to use your old phone as a touch:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3406
You can sync as many devices as you want to the same itunes account, there is no limit. You can select what content you want on each device & itunes will keep everything straight, by device on subsequent syncs.
    The AT&T store removed the sim card;
THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DONE! you will need that sim to update software or restore that phone. Go back to the store, if your old sim is in your new phone, have them deactivate it and put it back in your old phone. Get a new activated sim for your new phone. They should not charge you for this. If they give you any problems, ask to talk to the manager & refer them to the support article I referenced you.

  • Using my first generation Ipad as an Ereader

I was recently given a first generation ipad to use as an ereader. I have been trying to download apps so that I can read epubs and pdfs on the ipad but nothing seems to be working. It keeps saying that I need to update my iOS but the one that I on the ipad is as high as the first gen will go. Even going from my laptop to the ipad doesn't work. What apps could I download to read epubs? How do I get my ipad to work?

You've downloaded the current version of iBooks on your computer's iTunes ?
If you can't then download the it via the Purchased tab in the App Store app on your iPad then try closing the App Store app via the iPad's taskbar and then retry going to the Purchased tab in it : from the home screen (i.e. not with the App Store app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the App Store app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
You could also do a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Where can I purchase Firewire for First Generation Firewire

Recently a friend gave my son his 1st generation IPOD. Unfortunately, he did not give him the cable to connect the ipod to his computer (windows operating system). He has been looking for the cable for the past several months -- with no luck.
He is about ready to give up the search. I would like to get the cable for him for Christmas.
Got any ideas where he can buy the cable he needs to hook his 1st generation IPOD to his computer?

  • How to connect old 3rd gen firewire ipod to pc w/o firewire?

Just got out my ancient 3rd gen 20GB windows-formatted ipod and its Firewire Cable (6pins on each side). I charged it, and now can't figure out how to connect it to my pc. I don't have any kind of dock - only the 6pin firewire cable (identical on each end).

OK - just figured out that this is a 2nd generation ipod (20GB). It has a firewire port at the top with a cover over it. I just got off the phone with Apple Tech support and they suggested I try the forums, etc. They didn't know how to connect this ipod to a USB port. Anyone have any ideas?
