Using old Ibook g4 won't run websites that use scripts
I am using old ibook g4. Many websites that run scripts will no longer load or run properly. any suggestions other than getting a new computer.

You didn't indicate if it ever worked. If it NEVER did, the problem could be caused by a firewall in the router. For reasons that I do not understand, that will affect IOS (iPod/iPad) communication but will not affect computers or other devices.
You will need administrative access to the router. If a firewall is present, turn it off and test the iPod again. If it works, turn the firewall back on but weaken it a notch and test the iPod again. Repeat as required. -
My iBook seems to come up with some code and the this that tells you to shut down your computer in different languages thing, when starting up and holding "c" to install tiger. WHY WON'T IT LET ME INSTALL TIGER!!!!

The 500 MHz iBook came with OS 9 as its default operating system, and that's where I keep mine.
Most of them came with a tiny 9.31 GB hard drive. This makes upgrading to OS X and running iTunes problematic, since it's generally recommended to leave 5 GB of free hard drive space in order for OS X to run smoothly.
She will be able to use iTunes and AirPort in OS 9, but if you are talking about using a newer iPod with it or buying music from the iTunes Music Store, that will be a problem.
How big is the hard drive? (Some were custom builds and may have a larger hard drive.) Were the original software CD's included in the purchase?
10.0.4 is as high as you can go without buying system software.
Some people are running Tiger on them (256 MB of RAM required for installation; I recommend upgrading with a 512 MB RAM module placed in the one user-accessible slot), but not with an eye towards using iTunes (at least in any major way) with that small hard drive. -
Old Ipod Software won't run iTunes 7
So I am getting ready to fly home and I had gotten a brand new ipod ( I had an old 80 gig video and got a new one!)
so I install the new Itunes 7.1 ( after uninstalling the old iTunes of course) and it tells me that it cannot update iTunes because of the Ipod software and to uninstall the software and try again.
I have uninstalled everything but when I click to uninstall the Ipod MAIN thing off of my add and removes programs.. it won't uninstall.

if Add/Remove won't let you remove a version of the iPod Software, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to remove the installation configuration of any entries called "ipod for windows [date]" or "ipod updater [date]".

I have an iBook G4 that has been sitting around for about a year. I have completely charged the battery. When I turn it on, the screen turns grey with a small folder image in the middle, blinking a ? In the center of the folder. What can I do to open it up?

This could indicate the following
1. There is no OS installed, which would require you to install Mac OS X
2. You have a faulty Hard dDrive, in which case would require replacement
3. Your boot volume is not set to the hard drive so its not going to boot into the OS
First thing to do is hold down the option key while booting and see if the hard drive volume is selectable. If so then select and it should boot to Mac OS X. If nothing is shown, then your going to need your original restore disk or a retail version of Mac OS X 10.4
Incert the first restore disk or retail disk into the drive and hold own the 'C' key.
Start the CD and at the option screen select utilities. Go to disk utilities and check the hard drive ( normally named Macintosh) check the repair option and after its finished try restarting the iBook without the disk in the drive.
If utilities did not show a hard drive (macintosh) then you need to look at a replacement hard drive.

Media Manager 9.6.12 won't run; insists that I "upgrade" to same version, refuses to run
Every time I run Media Manager, an Upgrade window appears with the options to "Quit" or "Upgrade".
I can't use Media Manager because I can't dismiss this upgrade box without selecting one of those two buttons.
- Clicking "Quit" exists the upgrade application and Media Manager completely,
- Clicking "Upgrade" closes Media Manager and launches "Verizon Media Manager-9.6.12 Setup", with the options to Repair or Remove.
I've repaired the installation several times with no errors, but every time Media Manager launches, this process starts again (with the modal Upgrade window). I've completely uninstalled Media Manager (both through the Upgrade app and via Add/Remove Programs) and reinstalled it from a fresh download. I've rebooted at every opportunity along the upgrade and remove/reinstall paths. The results are always the same: double-click Media Manager, it loads, it says I have to upgrade or quit.
I'm running on a fully patched XPsp3 machine. The only other apps on this box are Panda Cloud Antivirus, TRENDnet SecureView (IP camera montior), PerfectDisk (defragger), and an [inactive] installation of Cerberus FTP Server. The machine also serves as a VPN gateway into my home network (via built-in XP services, nothing 3rd party). Besides periodic updates, no programs have been added or removed in at least two years.
The problem likely started sometime within the past few months; I just noticed it I recently when I went to check the PC's status.
Suggestions?I haven't other reports of this happening. Are you able to successfully install and use it on other machines in the house? It sounds like there is something interacting with it causing problems which we would need to isolate programs one by one to find which is the offending program.

Itunes won't run now that i've updated to 7.1
I installed the update to 7.1 and now the itunes will not start due to "detection of a problem with your audio configuration"
That's what's throwing me. I don't use iTunes and don't even have it installed. I just plug the phone in via a USB cable, or did anyway before iOS 7.1 and it worked fine. I manually pulled my photos and videos off to my hard drive. Now I'm trying to download iTunes and it just keeps saying "thanks for downloading iTunes" yet it hasn't even begun to download. All my own fault. I didn't listen to myself "if it ain't broke don't fix it" i.e. don't always rush to update to the lastest iOS. Heck I still use Windows XP on my desktop and have for 13 years. It works fine and I see no need to change it.

Safari 5.1.6 won't run on my Pro. It was Safari 6 on the MacBook I transfered the data from. Could this be the problem, and if so, how do I up grade to Safari 6? I can't seem to find any help.

When trying to update Apps in iTunes on my computer my old Apple ID appears, which is no longer in use and has no password; even when I try to create a password for this Old ID, Apple won't let me. When I go into see my Account settings My new Apple ID / iTunes ID are listed and the passwords are correct obviously so why can't I update my Apps? Why does my Old apple ID keep appearing and how can I get Apple to change this?
I have the same problem - it is maddening. I rely on this iPad for work so this is not just an annoyance! The above solutions of changing the appleid on the device or on the website do not work.
The old email address no longer exists - I haven't used it in a year probably and I no longer have the account. I logged into the appleid website and there is no trace of the old email address so there is nothing that can be deleted or changed there. On the iPad there is no trace of the old email address so nothing can be deleted there either. I have updated the iPad software and the same problem comes right back. Every 2 seconds I am asked to log in using the old non-existent email. The device is currently useless.
The only recent change to anything was the addition of an Apple TV device, which was set up using the correct login and password.
Does anyone have any ideas? The iPad has been backed up to the iCloud so presumably it now won't recognize the current iCloud account? So restoring may notbe an option? -
The office I work in uses a very old version of ACT!, an accounting package. This package has a component called SwiftPage, an antiquated email system that enables us to email from the ACT DB. SwiftPage runs via the web browser.
Firefox just did an auto update (that I will have to find out how to turn off) and now SwiftPage won't run as it is not compatible.
Can I "roll-back" my version of Firefox or do I have to uninstall and try to re-install an older version?

Many add-ons do in fact work if you force them to run. The procedure to roll-back is given in this article: [[installing previous versions of firefox]]
Unfortunately the official Firefox policy is that you downgrade to 3.6 which is supported for a while longer, and not the now unsupported Firefox 4. If after installing and running the ''add-on compatibility reporter'' you still have problems there are ways around the official policy.
I think it is absurd that Firefox 4 may be used by tens of millions of users one day and a few days later those that upgrade to Firefox 5 should be not only told not to use a now unsupported browser, if they need to revert due to problems, but are actually obstructed in attempts to do so. I have chosen to fil migrate from old ibook to new MacBook Pro using Time Machine after establishing admin account. I now have two admin. accounts and wish to delete the later one and transfer files manually. I am worried I will loose both accounts. ??
Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant. If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

How do I transfer files from an old iBook when it won't recognize the external HD?

Subject says it -- I'm trying to transfer the contents of an old iBook onto a Seagate external hard drive to upload into a newer computer, but the iBook "cannot verify" the external hd (which is in fine shape -- works with both a MacBook Pro and an iBook G4), and cannot locate it in disk utility.
Any help would be appreciated -- seriously, all I want to do is copy files out of the computer so I can keep the data and recycle the computer.

NathanIt could be that the external drive requires USB 2.0, whereas the iBook's USB ports are USB 1.1.
Which exact model is the Seagate drive? Do you have a link to it so you can check out its requirements?
If you have a FireWire cable and your newer Mac has a FireWire port, you can connect the two using FireWire Target Disk Mode, with the iBook as the Target Disk and the newer computer as the Host and transfer your files directly without using the external drive as an intermediary. (This is one reason I won't buy a Mac that doesn't have a FireWire port.) -
Hi. My iMac hard drive is running Mavericks. I have an old version of Quark Xpress (3.32) which won't run in Mavericks. Can I partition my hard drive and run an older system on one partition, so I can access my Quark? Is that possible?

QuarkXPress 3 is a Classic Mac OS application, so you need a version of OS X that still supports Classic. I believe 10.4 was the last one.
So if you have an iMac that boots with 10.4, then yes that is possible. I doubt though that newer Macs boot with OS X 10.4.
So why don't you upgrade QuarkXPress 3 to a newer version? I am not just asking that because I want you to spend money with us.
Typically using software that was released almost 20 years ago is just feasible when you keep an environment that was current at the time of release or a few years after, so an older Mac with a operating system present at that time. 20 years in IT is a lot.
So my opinion is that on a new Mac with a brand new operating system you need to use something a bit more current.
How about QuarkXPress 9 (released 3 years ago) or QuarkXPress 10? You are better off with v9, as QuarkXPress 10 only opens v7 and higher (whereas QuarkXPress 9 opens v3.1 and higher).
Or - I am even happy to make an exception - upgrade to 9 and we give you 10 for free? Let me know please.

Using an old iBook as a file server...
Okay. So, right now I'm using an old Apple iBook G3. It's a Dual-USB 800 MHz version. It's running Panther 10.3.9...
In the near future (Two months, maybe) I'll be purchasing a new Macbook. I don't want to just pawn off my old mac, or throw it out (Everyone I know has new PC's. Giving them an old mac would be useless).
Plus, I know that once I move all the files I think I need on it, and toss it out, BAM! I'll realize I forgot a folder or something else on it. So what I want to know is...
Is there any way that I can use this old iBook as a file server in any way? I've seen such things as "Back to My Mac" which does what i want it to, but (of course) is a leopard-to-leopard only feature. Is there any way that I can let this iBook sit on my home network (Wired in, if need be) and reach it from... say... Rochester?

When you repost, it will help if you describe what sort of "file server" you are thinking of; how many users, what types of files, etc. so that people have an idea of what your needs might be.

Yes, it's certainly possible. How easy will depend on large part on your ISP and your home network setup.

Old Flash in new Firefox won't run, no warnings.
Opened my laptop using a current version of FF but with Flash 11.9. Viewed one of my pages with Flash content and.... nothing, just an empty div. No warnings that Flash was out of date, etc. So if I have this right FF won't run out of date Flash for security reasons. Fine. I've always seen warnings in these cases. But apparently if Flash is old enough FF just doesn't bother. Visitors have no idea what is happening. It just looks bad.
Is this correct? What is the recommended way of dealing with this from a developer's viewpoint?We strongly recommend that users always run the latest version of Flash Player. Running an old version puts users at risk for malware infection. The vast majority of users are opted in to background update and are kept updated automatically, but there are users that for whatever reason have chosen to stick with an old, vulnerable version of Flash Player. While this is a bad idea, people are certainly free to do it. The upside is that the affected population that you're describing is pretty small.
The upgrade story will actually get better over time. The latest versions of both Google Chrome and Internet Explorer include Flash Player as a built-in component, distributed with the browser. Users are always updated with the latest version of Flash, and new updates are delivered inline via the Chrome updater or Windows Update respectively. Mozilla has spent a few years talking about how Flash needs to go away, while the other browser vendors have been investing in modernized plug-in interfaces and improvements in plug-in security, and unfortunately the prioritization is showing in the user experience. We're hopeful that Windows 10 will pick up the majority of the WinXP and Vista stragglers as well as many of the Win7 - Win8.1 users, which means that the whole Flash update problem for a very large population of people will be solved in IE once people upgrade.
It's hard to say what's at the root of the specific issue you're describing. With the major browsers on 4 or 6 week major update cycles (we publish monthly to ensure we can catch and address any new injections in the browsers that might come up in nightly/beta versions before they hit the general population, and to align with Microsoft patch tuesday), so you're talking something like 18 months worth of changes between the Firefox version you're running and the version of Flash that you're running. Everything at Mozilla gets done with bugs, and we'd definitely encourage you to file a bug on the user experience that you're seeing. They've been operating from a reactive place lately, and some of the changes that impact Flash definitely appear to be a little slapdash. It's ultimately good for them to hear from the developer community and not just me all the time, but feel free to add me to the CC: list in the bug.
We ultimately have no control over the longevity of a particular build of Flash -- there are way too many external variables -- and we're also investing a huge amount of effort in proactive security work (and it's been our top engineering priority for years). So each build usually includes large numbers of changes designed to either harden the player or address responsibly disclosed issues from researchers, the larger security and computer science communities and whatever the latest auditing and testing tools we can get our hands on are. The continuous stream of innovation and ingenuity in the offense space is impressive, but keeps us pretty busy. Browser-side changes can easily break older versions of the plug-in, and running an old version is just a bad idea.
So we've really streamlined the installation process to keep people on current versions, and Windows 10 will hopefully be a massive shift away from older, more vulnerable versions of Windows. The landscape is so different than it was even 4-5 years ago.. the days of running anything for years (or months) in your browser are long gone. The pace isn't going to slow down anytime soon, either.
