Using old powerbook with mini

I'm considering getting a mini. I have an old black powerbook. Is it possible to use my old powerbook as a screen and keyboard while using the mini as the startup disk and as the harddrive thus allowing me to use all the capacities of the mini with the powerbook keyboard and screen? Or will it only work as a slaved computer and not what I'm looking for and will I have to get an external monitor, mouse and keyboard?

If you only wanted to run X11 applications and command line "Darwin" applications then the answer is "Yes", you can run those on the Mini with the display/keyboard exported to the power book over an network connection. However you likely want to run things like the finder, iLife and other "mac applications" so in that case the Answer is "no".
UNIX has had the abilty to export a screen and keyboard over a network connection for 20 years now. All the "UNIX stuff" in Mac OSX retains that ability but new applications don't. Well not without some help. You can buy Apple's "remote desktop" for $$$ of download the free version of it (Google for VNC) But even with VNC you still need a monitor/keyboard to do the initial setup and software install. CRTs are cheap as are USB K/Bs and Mice
You may want to hold off, next week there may be a new Intel based Mini and a new version of Mac OSX

Can i use old machines with PXE to boot VDI Operating Systems using Windows Server?

Hi,
I would like to know if it is posible to create an architecture with Windows Server 2012 R2 configuring VDIs and use these VDIs with my old hardware. I would like to boot my old machines using PXE directly from the VDI images so i dont need to install any
operatig system in my old hardware.
The situtation i have,  is a computer room we use for trainings. I have all these machines with Windows XP and 2Gb RAM and i dont want to replace all machines at the moment. I was thinking to use VDIs to solve this situation.
The reason for booting up using PXE is that i dont want users to start up computers in Windows XP and then run RDP to start up the VDI. I would like a solution where users should not be able to do anything and machines boot up directly to
the VDI environment.
I would appreciate any suggestions to my requirements based in your experience.

I have not heard of people PXE booting to a VDI deployment, normally something like a thin terminal or wise terminal is used to boot to a basic RDP connector.

Is it ok to use your powerbook without the batter in, but the AC power plugged in?

I don't mean to pick, but are you sure about that? I'd be very interested to read where it says that, or understand what the reason for that is. It doesn't sound very logical to me.
If you have a fully charged battery the power supply doesn't send any power to the battery anyway, so it may as well not be there. The only thing you risk is losing all your unsaved data if the power goes out (unless you connect to a UPS) and reducing battery capacity if you don't use it much.

Can I use old drives with Mac Pro?

Can I transfer the IDE drives from my Gigabit Ethernet G4 into empty bays on a new Mac Pro? If not, what would be the best way to continue to use them? I currently have 3 internal drives in the G4, including one 120G Seagate Barracuda.

Hi,
You can only add one ATA IDE drive in the free optical port under the dvd drive.
I've done it with an old 5400 drive and it works fine. (I'm running windows on it).
Beware though - as noted in other posts - the IDE cable is very short for the free bay - take an angle of 45• when reslotting it, and go gently, or you may scuff the cable. If it seems too tight back out and try again.

Using pc keyboards with mini

What kind of difficulties will I encounter if I purchase a pc keyboard for use with my new mac mini. Does if make a difference whether wired or wireless?

The only difference I found with a PC KB is the Windows logo key is the Command key on the Apple KB. The Alt key is the same as the Option/Alt and the Ctrl key is the same as the Control key on an Apple KB.
I have only used a USB PC keyboard on a Mac Mini and have not had any issues.

Using old accesories with 5th Gen?

hi, i had a fourth gen that somehow disappeared-long story. anyway, i now have a 5th gen 60 gig and was wondering if some of the old stuff would work?
specifically the wall charger with firewire cable? it seems to be the same size on the bottom. Also i had the belkin battery pack, would love to know if this will still work. thanks for any help.

The charger/firewire cable will work. Can't use the cable to sync but it will work for charging.
Dunno about the battery pack. Plug it in and see.

Trying to use old Iphone with IOS 3.1.3 as Ipod

My kids are trying to use an old Iphone Gen 1 as a Ipod. We have successfully loaded music, but now of course they want games. All games need a newer version of IOS. Can I upgrade somehow? Itunes says the IOS is up to date with no opportunity to upgrade.

Well they are apps and games in the app store which are supported with the iPhone 3G or iOS 3.1.3. Old games of course. BTW remove the sim so your kids cannot make phone calls and send SMS.

How to use old TC with new TC for storage only?

Bought a 2TB TC and I still have my older 1 TB. Is their any way to use the older time capsule as a hard drive only and have that TC backed up along with my iMac on the new TC?

Basically the answer to this is NO!!
You can set it up but not the way you are thinking.
The TC is now and forevermore a network drive. You can therefore bridge the TC and plug it into your network. The obvious place being your new TC. You can also turn off the wireless in the old TC.. it is now a network accessible hard disk.
But Time Machine has a huge limitation.. it cannot backup network drives. So your TC cannot be backed up with your iMac to the new TC. Not by Time Machine. You can buy a different backup software.. eg CCC is excellent and use that.
Overall the TC is slower and less reliable than a USB drive plugged straight into your iMac.. especially if the iMac is newer type with USB3 ports.
And the USB drive is local and so it can be backed up by Time Machine. (Must have HFS+ format and be included in the backup).

Your "old HD" is P-ATA (IDE), right?
Theoretically it should not be a problem, if there is still room for a second drive on the JMicron IDE-port.
However, you should install a fresh XP SP2 onto that drive using JMicron Drivers (F6). Just "reparing" the existing installation might not work properly.

Using Griffin iMic with mini

I just installed an iMic on my mini, and right now I'm only using it for audio input, and leaving the output set to the mini's built-in headphones jack. Does anyone know if there is a difference in performance and/or quality when switching audio output to the iMic and letting it handle both? Should I just leave the output assigned to my mini's jack?

The speakers and power amp (Either extenal or built into the speakers) have the greatest effect on output sound quality. Most powered PC style speakers are not good enough to show off any difference is things like the quality of the DAC in the iMic vs Mini. If the speakers cost less than $1000 they are the weak link in the system. Also the iMic is not intended to be, nor is it marketed as a profesional quality device for either recording or playback.
For critical listening an industry standard is the AKG K240 headphone. These might show up a difference in two DACs but you'd still need a good and well trained ear.

Drop Zones shows correct image but previews using old photo with same name

Everyday I do my customer DVD's in the same format. I capture, then edit, take eight screen shots (as jpeg's) to use in iDVD for the title screen. Then after I have checked the completed DVD I delete the Jpeg's and the iDVD project. I also delete the iMovie project as I use a standard template with promo at the start and credits at the end.
After upgrading to iDVD 6 (i did upgrade iMovie 5 to 6 but had to go back because of bugs) I have noticed that when I add my jpeg's to the drop zones they appear correct but the preview in the background shows another jpeg. Looks like a previous jpeg used for another project that I have since deleted.
Has anyone else had this problem. I found that if I go back and rename the latest images I want to use (i normally just use a generic name like c1, c2, c3 etc) it works fine until now. But I am sure this problem will resurface with time even using full names.

I had the same issue.
In my case, Blob Cache was enabled for the web application in which the image issue was occuring.
I cleared blob cache, and after doing a hard refresh of my browser, the correct image was then displayed.
To clear blob cache, do the following:
Navigate to:
http://yourwebapp:port/yoursite/_layouts/objectcachesettings.aspx
Select: "Object Cache Flush" and "Force all servers in the farm to flush their object cache" check boxes
Click the OK button

How to use old library with new computer?

I keep all my music on an external HD. Recently, my main computer died, so I had to start using another iMac. It's running Tiger and iTunes 6, but I have never used the iTunes before. How do I get this computer to "see" my old iTunes library (on the external)?

You are welcome. One thing that comes to mind is that I believe when you use an external drive to hold your library, it is important that the external is on and mounted when ever you start up iTunes. My understanding is if you start iTunes and the external drive is not available, then iTunes reverts back to the default location on your internal. You then have to reset it back to the external, but I think you also have to re-add everything all over again.
So be sure you always have the external up and ready whenever you open iTunes.
