Using older 500GB TC with new 1TB TC for extra storage

I recently upgraded to the duel channel 1 TB Time Capsule and was wondering if I can use the older single channel 500GB Time Capsule purely as extra storage on my network. I just hate to let the old TC collect dust when there is valuable storage on it...
I'm concerned that if I connect the 500GB TC to the new one with an ethernet cable, the WIFI functions on the old TC may interfere or confuse the the computers on my network trying to connect wirelessly to the older TC. I'd prefer not to join the older TC to the network wirelessly.
Questions:
1. If I connect the older TC to the new one using ethernet cable, will the WIFI functionality of the old one automatically turn off or will it turn on and search for devices to connect to?
2. Should I connect the two using ethernet, which I understand is a much faster connection, or do I need to connect the two using USB to use the older TC purely as additional storage?
3. Is there anyway to manually turn off the WIFI functionality of the older TC to act as an external drive only?
4. If the WIFI cannot be turned off, will it interfere with the signals of the new TC? And do I have to join it to the network at this point or will the ethernet or USB connections override and shutdown the WIFI?
5. Will this work at all without any trouble or do I need to invest in a simple external hard drive at some point and connect using USB or ethernet to gain additional network storage as the TC documentation indicates I can easily do?
Any guidance is appreciated!
Thanks.

If you previously had the older TC setup to broadcast a wireless network, then it will continue to do so unless you set the Wireless Mode to "Off" in AirPort Utility.
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Wireless tab (just below icons) > Wireless Mode = Off.
Also, if you are connecting the older TC to the new TC using ethernet, you would run an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the new TC to the WAN (circle icon) port on the old TC. The old TC would need to configured as a "bridge"
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Internet Icon > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode).
+2. Should I connect the two using ethernet, which I understand is a much faster connection, or do I need to connect the two using USB to use the older TC purely as additional storage?+
Use ethernet configured as above. USB will not work in this type of application.

See #1 above.

You haven't mentioned whether you plan to use the TC for Time Machine backups or other file storage. Can you clarify on how you plan to use the old TC?

Updated my AppleID account info.  Under password security shows an email address to be used to receive email with new password settings.  I need to update that email address, how do I do that?  Thanks!

Thanks for the help Niel.  I couldn't change the rescue email address (an address that no longer exists and is therefore useless) until I could correctly answer the security questions.  After numerous guesses, finally got them right.  Was then presented with the option to change the rescue email address. Guess the only other option was to have Apple Support make the change or reset my account info.  Have made note of the correct answers so this won't happen again.   Thanks for the fast response!!

  • Using original power adaptor with new iPod Nano

    Hi all,
I was wondering whether it's possible to use my new iPod Nano (3rd Gen) with the old USB Apple power adaptor from my first generation iPod Nano.
    Thanks in advance,
    Stu

Does this hold true for old FireWire power adapters for old iPods as well? I have an iPod Nano (3Gen), along with the USB cable that was included when purchased, but no power adapter was included. I'd really like to use an old FireWire cable and adapter from an older iPod model with this new Nano, so I can charge it when I'm away from my computer. (more importantly, I don't want to have to go and buy ANOTHER power adapter with a USB connection...)

  • Can I use old Mac Pro with new iMac?

I have a Mac Pro (Pre 2007) running on 10.6.8 that is ok for now, but experiencing some degradation in performance. I have 4 drive bays full and memory maxed out. I am looking for a desktop solution that would allow the option to have the latest OSX (such as the latest iMac) and access this old Mac Pro still. Is this possible?
If so, what are some of the caveats?
SoftwareEx: CS6 is compatible with new OSX, but will files saved on new computer still be accessible on old computer?
    Access to files
NetworkCurrently using older version of Airport Extreme for home office setup
Any insights would be helpful! I hate the thought of this old workhorse turning into nothing more than an external hard drive, but it is not upgradable to the new operating system.

It sounds like what you want to do is create a simple peer network so you can use the Mac Pro as a storage unit.
This is easy to do, just connect the two with an ethernet cable and log on using the logon and password for the system you want to access. In the general case, this is a bad idea since you you have unrestricted access but you own both machines so security is a very low priority.
    Caveats:
The OS version will determine what apps a machine can run.
Data is just data as long as both systems use HSF+ or some other common file system.
Airport may or may not work... but a hard wire will always get it done and transfers data a lot faster.
You almost never get to have it ALL your way when mixing generations of systems, but if you keep it simple it works well. I've had a peer network with 4-6 systems running in my house since the turn of the century. Most Macs support 1000 baseT (gigabit ether) so data transfers up to 80-90MB/sec are easy.

  • Using an old mac with new ipod?

I own a beige PowerPC G3 (333 Mhz) with USB PCI card and Mac OS 10.2.8. I was wondering if it's possible to use the 5th generation ipod on my aging machine? I plan on purchasing something new very soon, but I was hoping I could at least use my new ipod on my old machine for a little while. I am using itunes 6.0.1.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the response. I was hoping to find someone that has been successful with using their ipod with an older machine despite the fact that apple states a user needs more up to date hardware than what I already have. Has anyone out there had any success?

  • IPod no longer works with Older iMac (works with new iMac)

    Hi all:
First off sorry about the cross post but I got no response to this question in the other forum. Hoping for help from this group. Thanks!!!!
I have an iMac Duo (20" 2.0Ghz) running 10.4.8 and iTunes 7.0.1 which recognizes my 5g (and my wife's 4g) no problem. However when I attach either of them to my G3 (G3 500 MHz) running 10.2.8 (iTunes 6.0.5) they are not recognized.
I believe that the 5G won't work because the G3 does not have USB 2. However, I do not understand why the 4G does not work.
The 4G worked with the G3 for about 2 years. I have not tried to attach it to the G3 since we bought new computers (iMac for me, MacBook Pro for her) until today. I wanted to use it to transfer some files from the G3 to the new iMac.
I have tried forcing the 4G into disk mode and connecting it to the G3 but that did not help (I tried this with the 5G also).
I am using a USB cable with the 5G and a firewire cable with the 4G.
According to software update all of the computers are 100% current.
Thanks for any and all help!
    Gary

I'm no geek but I can say that my 5G video iPod works just fine with my B&W G3 (450Mhz processor), which I am pretty sure only has USB 1. My G3 is running iTunes 7 and OS 10.4.5. Updating may solve your problem.

  • Using older client 10201 with 11g database

    Hello,
Are there any issues with using sqlplus client 10201 with 11g database with regard to performance? I would think using the 11g client with 11g database would be preferred but what would be the disadvantage in using sqlplus 10201 with 11g database?
Also, what would be disadvantage if using sqlplus 11g with an older database 10201/10202? Thank you.

I guess the most visible and the prominent issue of using an old version client with the more latest version db would be that the older version client won't be able to display/use some of the newest features. This sounds more like a usability issue than performance issue which you mentioned but that's what which came on top of the mind. Performance should not be affected as the client doesn' do much except to pull the data so if there would be any issues actualy , they would be with the server rather than the client.
    Just my 2 cents.

  • Using older analog equipment with Logic

    Hello!
I have an excellent condenser mic and tube preamp that I used to use ten years ago with analog reel-to-reel recording. I just bought a mac book pro, however, and would love to get back into it. Problem is, the optical digital input is the size of a headphone jack, and my old cables and plugs are the older, larger 3/4 size.
Does an adapter exist to use my old stuff? Or do I have to get a solution like mbox and use the USB ports?
Once I make the connection, I'm assuming Logic will be able to record the input...
Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Great! That's the best start for vocals and acoustic instruments - depending on what this gear is.
I think you'd be better off with an interface rather than juggling cables. Get a Firewire interface: If you don't want to spend too much money at this stage, check out the PreSonus Inspire or the baby Focusrite Saffire LE.

  • Using old Airport Express with new Airport Extreme to stream music

I recently purchased the newest Airport Extreme to replace my older Airport Express. I'm running OS 10.8.5. I like the speed of the new WIFI signal for streaming to Apple TV. No long waits or buffering interruptions while watching movies. I still want to use the old Airport Express to stream music from my iPhone to a stereo in another part of the house. I plugged in the Express module and it just flashes amber. Doesn't show up in Airport Utility either.

I suggest that you first perform a "factory default" reset on your old AirPort Express, and then, check out the following Apple Support article for configuring it for streaming.

  • Brushes not working with new RAW conversion for Nikon D7000

I have always worked with RAW files w/A2 & A3.1.1 with my Nikon (D80) And now, just got Nikon's D7000 and of course, waited for the RAW conversion that just came out.
Apple addressed the Nikon D7000 RAW situation (which was fixed this month), but now when I use "brushes" on RAW pics, very little if any changes occur.
Very little affect occurs (if any) with A3.1.1 and the "new" RAW conversion for Nikon. I shot (at the same time) both RAW and JPEG (as cameras can) and put them side by side in A3. Pulled down Dodge / Burn / Skin Smoothing & Blur from brushes and they all did a great job. But on the RAW pic that was taken at the same time..... nada, nothing (maybe a minute change, but nothing to call home about).
Bottom line, the newest RAW capability that came out a couple of weeks ago, somehow messed up brushes? I don't think I am that smart or lucky to see this issue. Am I missing something here? If so, please set me straight.
I have tried the places one pulls down brushes but no affect on RAW. Using curves from bricks and luminance, etc, works just fine. Guess I am stuck with JPEG's until this is resolved by our A3 guys, or someone realigns me.

I am able to import them, but I cannot edit them as RAW files. They behave like .jpegs. So correcting exposure for example is a horrible experience. My 5D Mark II files behave as they did in Aperture, so it is the FZ1000 RAWs in particular that are problematic.

  • Using an External HD with USB 1.1 for Media (Movie files) storage?

    Many thanks for your attention.
For a Media Storage (mostly movies) HD, I ordered a Maxtor OneTouch II with Firewire and the company mistakenly sent me one with USB 1.1 instead.
I remember reading that for Media Storage, only the Firwire connection will work (for Macs). Or that there are a lot of problems with USB.
Before sending this HD back to company, just checking to see if this is so.
Also (when I get the correct Drive), I've heard that in order to store a Movie File, (a movie on Final Cut Pro or iMovie, etc.), the External Hard Drive MUST be formatted as a "Mac Extended (Journaled)" Hard Drive.
Posting here for people's thoughts, opinions (hopefully not contradictory).
    - Ross

    Send it back.
Even USB 2.0 isn't good for media. Fast transfer rate, but not a sustained one.
USB 1 won't work AT ALL.
    RETURN!

  • Using old wall charger with new iPod Classic

I just got a new 80Gb iPod Classic to replace my old original 20Gb model. Can anyone tell me if the wall charger that came wiht the older model will work to charge the newer one?

Yes, it should work just fine. I'm still using the AC adapter and firewire cable from my 60 gig iPod Photo to charge my Touch, 3rd gen Nano and 60 gig iPod with Video.

  • Older Powerbook compatibility with New iPod?

I have an older version of the G4 powerbook and I would like to get an iPod, but it doesn't appear that I can use the two together because my computer does not have USB 2.0. It does however have Firewire. Is there a built in Firewire port on the newest version of the IPod or are these two pieces of equipment just incompatible? Thanks in advance.

Todd, Welcome to the discussion area!
You just need the Firewire adapter cable (M9127G/A). The new iPod works just fine with Firewire.
