Using one Itunes database across two macs

Using one itunes database across two macs
I currently run a 2010 MBP (500gb hd) at home and on the road and a 2013 Imac (1Tb hd) at work. I have a large lossless itunes library of about 300gb and would like to increase the library further.
My MBP started running slowly and I realised that my iTunes library was choking the whole computer. I started to explore ways to store my library on a remote disk and bought a G drive 1Tb portable drive.
My efforts to carry out the transfer were only partially successful with most of my library transferring but a significant number of tracks displaying the ! sign which means they couldn't be located.
I have also got an Imac at work and what I had hoped to achieve was to have my iTunes database on the 1tb portable drive and use the portable disk on both my MBP and iMac.
Our technical support company are dubious about whether this will work because the local specific itunes library data on each machine will differ and each machine will not operate correctly with the underlying data on the portable drive.
I am not very technical and I am finding it difficult to follow the various posts on this board and elsewhere. Many seem to comment on splitting their library across multiple disks but I cant really seem to get to the bottom of storing my library on one disk and using it across multiple computers.
Is what I am trying to achieve practical?
If it is, can someone point me to an article/post please? Or alternatively could someone explain how I might achieve my goal.
Thanks in a advance for your help.

Here you go.

  • Sharing Music: using one iTunes account for two users on one MacBook Air

    I'm trying to set up my parents on their new MacBook Air and I have set up an account for each of them. To keep their music collection simple & compact I want them both to use one iTunes account on the one machine. Can two separate users work off the same iTunes account on the one machine?
    I have tried the Home Sharing function but this seems to be for separate machines rather than accounts.
    I have also tried putting the music into a shared folder but this hasn't worked properly for me as the secondary account is able to purchase (but not download) the music correctly from iTunes.
    Any help appreciated. Thank you.

  • How do I use one iTunes account with multiple macs?

    I have a Mac mini and am getting a MacBook Pro.  I want to use my iTunes library that currently resides on my mini on my MacBook as well without jacking up anything.
    I have an iPhone, an iPad Air and a classic iPod that are all sync'ed to the iTunes on the mini.

    Hello blcampbell
    There are many different ways to handle this and the easiest way is to migrate you data is to use Migration Assistant. It will migrate not only your music but also other content from your Mac Mini. If all you want is music, you can always just select that as an option. The article below will guide you through that option plus a few others if you are unsure how you want to proceed.

  • Can I use one itune account with two iphones

    I now have two iphones can you have one itune account and keep your contacts separate, I dont care about apps

    Yes you can, iTunes will identify your phone by serial number and phone number.
    Best if you can to set different name to your phone under SETTINGS/GENERAL/ABOUT/Name and to name like e.g. iphone3G and the other iPhone 4s.
    So everytime you sync, itunes will backup your phone's contents and data and you will be able to identify from the backup files correctly in future.

  • Sharing ONE iTunes Library on TWO Macs (Mac and MacBook) Using Airport Extr

    I did put this thread in the Airport Extreme forum, but I have moved it here on advice.
    I realise that this has probably been answered a million times on this forum, so I apologize in advance. I recently bought an Airport Extreme and connected to my wireless home network, my internet speeds have increased (don't ask me why because I don't know) and I am really happy with the results, I have just one issue which I am hoping to resolve.
    I have a iMac in my study, and a MacBook which I use all around the house. I have an external hard drive connected to the AEBS which has all of my files on, including my iTunes music. The problem is, I download music on both computers, and if I download a track or a movie onto the itunes library of one, it doesn't appear on the other computer, even though both iTunes apps are pointing to the same folder on the external hard drive.
    The question I have is, how do I make both itunes libraries share the same library, so if I add a song on my mac it will automatically appear on my macbook when i use it next.
    Both macs are fully up to date, and running Leopard
    Many Thanks
    JC

    This is really an iTunes question. How do you configure a remote library which updates properly for all clients?
    I suggest that you ask in the iTunes discussion area.

  • Accessing one mail database across multiple macs

    I am not too familiar with the mac yet, I'm getting there, but I have an issue I can't figure out...
    I convinced my parents a long time ago to get macs, imac and macbook pro, and both have windows on them, and that's what they're using. I have imposed a deadline for them of tomorrow to finally make the switch, and remove the windows installation. They're using Outlook for their email, and I want to know if it's possible to
    1) Import outlook pst into Mail without going through entourage first
    2) Access the mail database on the imac on the macbook pro.
    Thanks in advance...

    ZooCrewMan,
    I may be wrong about their support of IMAP. I just checked the Earthlink support site myself, and I cannot find anything about it.
    Mail does not store in a "database," but rather stores each message as a separate text file. Attachments are stored separately, but linked to the associated message. This is handy for several reasons. One, it avoids the problems associated with monolithic database files. It also aids in the backup process, making each incremental backup that much smaller. Finally, it is instrumental in the ability to index and search all messages by content.
    It is not possible to "point" Mail on one machine to the stored emails on another, at least not without serious advanced work and headaches, and it is not necessary. By telling Mail on each machine to use the same address, servers, etc., but to leave the messages on the server until they are either moved to a local email folder or deleted, the results you need will be achieved. In this configuration, Mail essentially works as an IMAP client, only using the POP protocol. When Mail is launched, it downloads all new messages from the server, but leaves them there. The server is told to remove the message only when that message is deleted and/or moved to another local folder.
    When Mail is launched on the second machine, the same new messages are there on the server for downloading, minus those already deleted by the first machine. The only thing that is not duplicated on both is "sent" mail.

  • Can I use one TimeCapsule to backup two Macs that are in two different locations.

    Hello, I have one mac on a recording studio and one macBook pro. Is it possible to use the sametime capsule to backup the Mac in the studio, by bringing the time capsule in the studio, for let say, one week. Then the next week take the time capsule at home to backup my own MacBookPro, and so on... ?
    I know it's a basic question, but I can't find a clear answer...
    Thanks.

    It's possible, but the fact that it is possible does not imply that it would be practical.
    You will have to completely re-configure the Time Capsule each time that you change locations, because you are changing networks.
    It would be much, much easier to simply add a hard drive at home and backup the Mac to that drive.

  • How do I use one external HD for two Macs to play music files?

    I have an External HD linked to my iMac with all my music files. I want to use that same portable Ext HD to use with my MacBook.
    Changing the location from MacBook/iTunes Preferences doesn't work, nor does File>Library>Organize Library. The music files don't show up in iTunes. I'm on iTunes 10.6.1.

    On each computer:
    Open iTunes. Select Preferences from the iTunes menu and click on the Advanced icon in the toolbar. At the top you will see a box showing the path to your iTunes library. Click on the Change button, navigate to the location for the library on your external drive, select it and click on the Open button. Note this permanently changes the library's location on that computer. That means you cannot access your music unless the external drive is connected.
    If you don't want a permanent change, then press the OPTION key and hold it down while you launch iTunes. iTunes will then prompt you to select the library you wish to open for that session.

  • Using one itunes library on two computers

    I want to have a master itunes library on my home computer using an external hard drive and then when I go to work, use the same library, adding new music, artwork, organizing, etc. at work and see those changes on my computer at home. I only want to sync my ipod at home...just want to see everything merge together at home, regularly.

  • Using one Content Switch across two secure DMZ's

    I'm currently trying to configure an 11503 to loadbalnce 2 groups of servers that are located in 2 separate DMZ's. Each DMZ has to be completely secure from one another. If I configure Circuit ip address's for each of the 2 VLANS (each VLAN is separated by a firewall). The CSS will automatically setup routing between them. I have looked at the two commands "ip uncond-bridging" and "no ip opportunistic" but feel these will not be sufficient to separate the two VLANS.

    why don't you move your CSS to another vlan so the firewall is between the CSS and the servers ?
    example
    .......CSS
    ........|
    ......Firewall
    .......|....|
    .vlan1-+....+---- Vlan 2
    Like this the CSS can do loadbalancing to the different servers but the firewall is still there.

  • Can I purchase music using two AppleID / Passwork using one iTunes on computer and sync all purchased music on to one iPad

    Can I purchase music using two Apple ID & Password using one iTunes on one computer and sync purchased music to iPad 2?

    After having thought about this, I realized, sometime later, that I gave you bad information. You can NOT sync to multiple iTunes libraries with one iPad. I was thinking about using one iPad with mulitple computers and you have to set you device to manage the music manually to do that - you don't sync.
    Sorry about the incorrect information,

  • HT204053 The entire family has used one itunes account for years. How do we all set up separate iCloud accounts now?

    The entire family has used one itunes account for years. How do we all set up separate iCloud accounts now? Or should we? 5 macbooks, 2 ipads, 4 iphones, 2 itouch, 2 imacs.   How does one decide what to sync, share and what not to? Green Jeans.

    You need to start by understanding the distinction between iTunes and iCloud - Apple confuse the issue by referring to 'iTunes Match' as part of iCloud. It isn't.
    You don't have to have the same login (Apple ID) for iTunes and iCloud; many people don't and there's no problem about it.
    Your iCloud ID gets you email, calendars, contacts, iWork documents and PhotoStream syncing between devices.
    Your iTunes ID gets you the iTunes Store, the App Store for iOS, the Mac App Store for OSX,, 'iTunes in the Cloud' (downloading of purchased items to any logged-in device) and 'iTunes Match' (uploading of songs not purchased in the iTunes Store).
    Your family members can easily each get their own iCloud account to keep email etc. separate - in each case they will need a different non-Apple email address (a free one from Yahoo etc. would do) to set up the ID. If they are sharing a Mac they need to be using a separate user account.
    They can have their own iCloud accounts and still all sign into the same iTunes account: or they can open their own iTunes accounts using their new iCloud Apple IDs.
    BUT they cannot transfer items purchased under the present iTunes ID to different iTunes IDs.

  • How to use one commandButton to execute two tasks in JSF

    I have a form in JSF page which contains different faces components. These faces bind to ADF BC to insert one row in the database when the user press commandButton. Also I need to bind the value of one inputText in that form to managed bean to execute another task in the application when the user press the same commandButton.
    The code of the inputText:
    <h:inputText value="#{bindings.ProjectNumber.inputValue}"
    id="pn"
    size="10"
    required="#{bindings.ProjectNumber.mandatory}">
    The code of commandButton:
    <h:commandButton actionListener="#{bindings.Commit.execute}"
    value="Save"
    disabled="#{bindings.Commit.actionEnabled}"/>
    The managed bean is findInspector. I tried to insert inputHidden inside commandButton tag and assign the value of the inputText to the inputHidden as follows:
    <h:commandButton actionListener="#{bindings.Commit.execute}"
    value="Save"
    disabled="#{bindings.Commit.actionEnabled}">
    <h:inputHidden value="#{bindings.ProjectNumber.inputValue}" binding="#{findInspector.project}"/>
    </h:commandButton>
    But it was not work
    Please how can I write the code to use the value of the inputText more than one time in the JSF(one to insert one row by using ADF BC and another to use the same value to bind to a managed bean) and how to use one commandButton to execute two tasks in JSF.
    Thank you

    Just dopublic void execute() {
        anotherAction(inputValue);
    I guess those articles might be interesting about passing params and the usage of inputHidden and also about using datatables:

    Yes I did
    <managed-bean>
    <description>The bean for get project No</description>
    <managed-bean-name>projectBean</managed-bean-name>
    <managed-bean-class>
    mcscm.model.ProjectBean
    </managed-bean-class>
    <managed-bean-scope>request</managed-bean-scope>
    <managed-property>
    <property-name>bindings</property-name>
    <value>#{bindings}</value>
    </managed-property>
    </managed-bean>
    Also I changed the method in the managed bean as follows:
    public String commandButton_action() {
    FacesContext fctx = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
    ValueBinding vb = fctx.getApplication().createValueBinding("#{bindings}");
    DCBindingContainer dcb = (DCBindingContainer) vb.getValue(fctx);
    OperationBinding operation = (OperationBinding) dcb.get("projectNumber");
    operation.execute();
    return null;
    where projectNumber is my method in the java class of the application module "TaskInformationImpl". I made this method to be accessed from outside of ADF BC.
    I just create a sample code for projectNumber method for testing only as:
    public void projectNumber (String data){
    System.out.print(data);
    In the page Pagedef file I added this :
    <methodAction id="projectNumber"
    InstanceName="TaskInformationDataControl.dataProvider"
    DataControl="TaskInformationDataControl"
    MethodName="projectNumber" RequiresUpdateModel="true"
    Action="999" IsViewObjectMethod="false">
    <NamedData NDName="data" NDValue = "#{bindings.ProjectNumber.inputValue}" NDType="java.lang.String"/>
    After I did all of this I get a new error like:
    javax.faces.FacesException: #{projectBean.commandButton_action}: javax.faces.el.EvaluationException: java.lang.ClassCastException: oracle.adfinternal.view.faces.model.binding.FacesCtrlAttrsBinding cannot be cast to oracle.adf.model.OperationBinding
    Is it very difficult to do this in JDeveloper?. yes ADF BC provide me a lot of facilities, but when I want to do a specific task I face a lot of troubles
