Using OneStep DVD with a HDD Camera

I am a relatively new mac user (4 months) but i've navigated my way around pretty well and have used all the ilife software as well as final cut express and some other things with much delight. But I have a wife and have a 1 year old baby. The wife is intelligent but would rather not spend time editing video etc.. but would rather take our files directly off the camera and burn them to dvd.. So i noticed the onestep dvd process which would be perfect if we had a firewire type camera.. But we don't. We also don't have firewire on our new macbook. Hence the reason we bought a HDD camera that does AVCHD. Just wondering if anyone knows if iDVD could use a HDD camera with a quick process such as OneStep DVD.
thanks
Steve

Too late to edit my reply so I'll add this here .....
The only way I can think of to accomplish your wife's objective is with a FW minidv camcorder (example pictured below) and a Dvd Recorder with a FW input like this one (Daewoo DVR07):
The advantage in this is that all is done in real time (as opposed to waiting for iDvd to capture and encode a one step dvd) and includes a basic menu and interval chapters if you wish (not to mention the ability to record in sessions as opposed to write at once only thru iDvd).
Btw ... iDvd's One Step can actually take longer than using the traditional approach of iMovie => iDvd (just so you are aware).
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • Using OneStep DVD

i just made a dvd using idvd's "OneStep DVD", it worked with no problem. the only thing is, while the movie was being extracted from my mini-dv camcorder i could see it using more space, for example (before extraction:64.46Gb-after extraction:62.26Gb. oddly enough after restarting my mac i now have 64.26Gb. is the movie that was "extracted" anywhere on my mac still? nothing in my movie folders etc... please assist, thank you.

When using OneStep, nothing is saved to your hard drive (unless something crashes )
When you quit and restart iDVD, all temporary files associated with the OneStep project are deleted.
    please assist, thank you
I don't understand what the problem is.

  • Using a DVD with an iPhoto 4 library on it

When use such a DVD with about 2000 photos, a lot of time is taken up with iPhoto 5 converting the file to its newer format.
I would like to burn the photos anew, after they have been put into iPhoto 5 format, to avoid this time waste. Can someone explain how to do this?

    Hi robert,
Double click on the Cd icon to open it. Drag the iPhoto Library folder to the desktop. Launch iPhoto with the Option key. At the dialog window, choose to open another library. Navigate to the one on the desktop and choose it.
iPhoto will tell you the library needs to be upgraded.
Once that library is upgraded and opens fine, highlight Library in the source column to burn the library within iPhoto. This will give you a version 5 library that will mount within iPhoto.

  • Satellite M30: Replace DVD with additional HDD?

    Hello!
As my Satellite M30-642 doesn't offer a modular bay to switch drives and as I got an additional DVD writer for USB which I can use I am thinking of trying an experiment: removal of DVD drive and replacing it with an additional HDD/SSD.
As the SSDs are very light weight, have no moving parts and do not necessarily require screws to be installed and as the DVD slot delivers IDE and power connector this could work. The SSD needs to be placed inside an old and modified slimline cd-rom to ensure that the modification isn't visible and the notebook is safe from dust etc.
Has anyone tried something like that before? Are there any solutions to buy for Sat M30 (model year 2004)?
    Cheers, obreitfelder

    Hi
As far as I know the Sat M30 doesnt support the slim select bay and therefore you cannot use such adaptor instead of the CD/DVD drive.
    Sorry this is not possible

  • Using Mini Dvds With iMac?

Hi, I have a dell (pos) right now and I'm getting a iMac today, but i was wondering if the iMac supports the mini dvds that you use in the digital recorder cameras?

You will need an external tray-fed DVD drive for that.
That said, given the choice, you don't want to use a mini-DVD camcorder anyway. They are designed for immediate playback in a set-top DVD player, not for editing or manipulation. The MPEG-2 compression that the video undergoes substantially degrades the quality of the video, and because it stores the video in GOPs, you can't do frame-accurate editing of the video.
You want something that shoots DV (often cheaper than the DVD models), or AVCHD (mostly found on flash and hard-disk HD models). Mind you, AVCHD editing can be slow -- it's highly compressed.

  • Can I copy a DVD with software that came pre-installed?

    Lenovo 3000 J115/7387A11 Desktop.
My wife had a bunch of old movies recorded on a DVD. She would like to have an additional copy of the DVD and since my Lenovo has a DVD burner wants me to make a copy of the DVD.
Does anyone know if the software that came with the Lenovo can do this?
    Thanks for any help.

You shouldn't have any problems whatsoever copying the DVD. The supplied software can do this.

  • Can I use FCP X with a 'tape-camera'?

I am used to FCE. Now I want to buy FCP X but I still use tape. I red that I have to buy a plug in. Is there anyone who has experience with that combination? Second: what's the price of a plug in?

    That's no problem.
It's better to capture the whole tape or at least one contiguous chunk rather than try importing a bit from here and a bit from there.
Reviewing the tape in the camera and selecting clips to capture is not only time-wasting but puts a tremendous unnecessary strain on the camera's transport mechanism and the tape itself.
This method was developed when hard drives were tiny and you had to minimise the quantity of video you imported.
Now if you capture the whole tape you can access any part of it in seconds and review it extremely quickly.
With modern hard drives being measured in Terabytes, a whole tape of 12GB is insignificant.

  • I have burned a DVD using I-DVD with pictures from Iphoto and I am wondering why the metadata that includes the Faces tags are not showing up in the original files on the burned DVD?

    Request for help

Faces is not a standard and has no place to go in metadata - in iPhoto you can export including much of the metadata by chencking all of the boxes when you export - no idea at all what iDVD does - better to ask in the iDVD forum

  • Trouble burning with OneStep DVD

I've been archiving a number of my Digital hi-8 tapes onto DVD using OneStep DVD with no problems until recently. The last few hi-8 tapes I want to archive onto DVD do not start immediately so OneStep seems to think there is no information on the tape and will not burn a DVD. I get an error message as follows: "Nothing Captured. No video has been captured. Aborting OneStep DVD creation."
I've been trying to figure out a way to "trick" OneStep DVD into not rewinding the tape on my camera all the way so it will start when the video actually begins on the tape but I can't figure out how to make it work because it keeps rewinding regardless. I have too many tapes to create actual DVD projects so OneStep is the way for me to go at this point. Does anyone know how to get around this problem?

    Hi Len;
I actually tried this approach but, for some reason, I get an "out of memory" message when I take this route. It's worked fine (with other movies of the same type) when I am able to burn straight to DVD but gives me grief when I try to burn the very same movie from iMovie. Any other suggestions?
    Thanks!

  • Need OneStep DVD Help

I just used a firewire plug to connect my digital camcorder (set to VCR) to my MacBook, inserted a blank DVD, clicked on "OneStep DVD". Nada.
    What gives?

    Hi pceary,
    welcome to macbook forum.
First, check if your macbook detect and able to communicate with your camcorder, by opening iMovie, and switch the button from scissor icon to camcorder icon, and if it is connected and you can import the movie, then those two are communicate each other.
Second try again within this sequence:
+To use OneStep DVD, connect your digital video camera to your computer using a FireWire cable. Then turn on your camera and make sure it's in VCR mode.+
+Click OK and insert a blank disc. OneStep DVD rewinds the tape, imports your video, and burns it to a DVD.+
    Good Luck.

  • Time taken for OneStep DVD

I am REALLY new to iDVD. I transfered my video from the camera and created a movie using iMovie with about four transitions. I am using OneStep DVD from the saved movie on my HD. It has successfully made the DVD, but oh, my goodness, it takes about six hours to finish!! The movie is 1 hour and 45 minutes. Is this a normal time to process??
    Thanks for your help.

For a Mac Mini like you have - probably - especially if you are doing other things with the computer while iDVD is trying to work.
Creating DVDs requires lots of patience - especially with a slow machine (by today's standards).

  • Onestep dvd great video, no sound

    Hi,
I made a dvd using onestep dvd from my minidv. The video came out great, nice and clear looks awesome. The problem is there is no sound. Tried it twice on two separate days with same results. Anyone no why this is happening. The process seems simple enough I just don't know why the sound wont come through. Any help will be great.
    Aloha, Sean

    Hi Sean
Your original material from ? miniDV tape Camera or ?
    iDVD
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named: com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
