Using only web safe colours speeds up site download

I have found that using the 'web safe' colours facility in the colour picker speeds things up.
In the colour picker switch on it's toolbar and click on the third icon from the left. Then choose the 'web safe colors' from the drop-down-menu, this will only list the colours that can be directly coded in HTML.

When you shot the footage, what was the camera set to record? 60p or 60i?
How are you importing the footage into FCP-7?
Did you use some third party conversion software?
Click on a source clip you imported from the camera in the FCP browser, and once selected, type Command + 9 to see the item properties for the clip. Either report those properties, or post a screen shot of them here.
Next, click anywhere on your timeline and type Command + 0 {zero} to see your Sequence Settings. Either report your Sequence Settings or take a screen shot and post that screen shot here.

How are non iWeb sites able to use non "web-safe fonts?

I know there is a list of "x" number of "web-safe fonts" that we should stick to. However, we all see incredible fonts all over the internet on non iWeb sites.
What is it that makes the non-safe fonts work for them. Is there anything we can do to make those fun fonts work for us? I don't have specific examples (sorry). . .just looking for a general answer

The type of file compression to use for web pages is dictated by the number of colors required. Since graphics slow down a web site, your mission is to get the best overall appearance, with the smallest file sizes. The most popular forms of graphic compression are .gif and .jpg
.gif files are limited to 256 colors which work very well for non-photo types of graphics (logo's, etc) and .gif also supports transparency, where you can actually make a graphic appear to be 'cut-out' against a different color background. Gradients do not work well with .gif files.
.jpg files are more suitable for photo's due to the thousands or even millions of shades of colors in skin tones, vegetation, whatever. Jpg's do not support transparency or animation.
Photoshop Elements would be a very good program to pick as an overall web and photo retouching program. The "Save For Web" feature is sweet. You can even continue to use iPhoto to manage your photo library and choose a program like Photoshop as an 'External Editor' to actually work on the pictures.
Adobe Illustrator is probably not where you want to start. There is a learning curve to work with shapes (vectors) instead of actual dots on a page, and it's native format is not compatible with any web browsers. It's really not suitable for photo's at all. It is very powerful when working with commercial graphics that need to be sharp at all sizes, but probably more than you want to deal with.

Change to web safe colours

I have made a logo for a customer in Photoshop CS5. After finishing it I realize that all the colours are not web safe. Is there a simple way to convert a certain colour (in one separate layer) so it becomes web safe without starting all over again?

But how do I "fill" specfik parts of the logo with the new colour... If I use the Magic Wand to make selecions, these parts will lose their sharp/fine edges
What I desire is a way to input a specific color code and then convert it to another... Is this possible?

Web safe fonts - Baby Theme site 1.0

I'm using the Baby Theme template from 1.0, does anyone know why my content font is being displayed in IE in the Times New Roman font when I have specifically changed the content font to Copper Black in iWeb.
Can I change the buttons (for blog, albums, movies) font which is defaulted to Hoefler to match the font I'm using for the content.

why would Apple create template with non web safe font if my users want to view this using IE
Probably to make things a bit nicer for Mac users, since they will have all these fonts on their machine and it will look the same for them as it does to the author. Apple doesn't always restrict its templates, either regarding fonts or other features, to what works best for Windows users.
The basic principle is that the viewer must have the font installed on his machine in order to have it display correctly, unless you convert your text into an image (normally done by adding an invisible degree of shadow to your font).

My MacBook Pro can be used only in Safe Mode

Dear gurus and hackers
My computer was working just fine before the last upgrades. Then in the last days something happened and now when I use my MacBook pro in normal mode the spinning beach ball cursor keep spinning and nothing I can do about it.
In safe mode the computer is slow but I can use it. The audio doesn't work and some things (like the background automatic change thing) are very slow.
but at least I can use the computer.

I have problem with the speed of sites downloading

All the sites very slow download in FF browser

Since updating to V27 *ALL* internet access to any site, secure or normal is extremely slow. Prior to the update (V26) things were running fine. This is happening on 2 different PCs and one install has no add-ons installed and is Just as slow as the install with add-on. Running a 12 MB connection So slow it's impossible to shop on Amazon as responses take minutes.. Normal email (not through FF is running fine so it's definitely FF27.

Use of non web-safe fonts during in-browser editing

Hello.
I'll looking into setting up in-browser editing so allow others to update the site without me.
However, the site uses non-web-safe fonts from my computer's font library. Can they update text that uses non-web-safe fonts that they might not own on their computers?

So, just to clarify...
Even though my website uses a non-web-safe font throughout, it can still be edited in browser mode? (My concern is your mention of "editable region" as my text is saved as an image rather than as text due to the fact the font is a non-web-safe font - does this matter?)
And lastly, you're saying even though the font won't be installed on the user's own font library, it can still recreate the edited text in the existing font? This seems surprising, but pretty amazing if true?

VPLS (ATM-Ethernet) using only one circuit in the main ethernet site

We are needing to connect the following topology in our MPLS net:
The main site connects to the net through an Ethernet circuit and the remote sites are connected through ATM circuits. we need to use only one vlan in the main site. It is possible to connect this topoligy using only one vlan in the main site through VLPS? or pseudowires? which other solution can we use to solve this problem?

I understand your best option will be to run AToM/L2VPN internetworking and have a PVC from a remote locate to be "internetworked" to a sub-interfaces (representing a vlan) at the central site which have an Ethernet connection.

Adding Web safe Japanese fonts to muse

I'm having the same problem as Richard Grehan

I'm working in both Japanese and English but i use an english operating system, I'd like to add some websafe japanese fonts to muse via Typekit, Abhishek.G suggested the following:
- Temporarily switch to Japanese
- Create some sample text and cycle through the Japanese web-safe fonts you want to use so they appear in your "Recently Used Fonts" list
- Revert to English
- Use the Japanese web-safe fonts from the "Recently Used Fonts" list
However this method doesn't allow you to add new fonts and you can only use the web safe fonts already on your system. When you try to search on typekit you are confronted with the same list of non-Japanese fonts see above. Using the fonts already on my system gives me a choice of one font, not really ideal. I know many people out there who have to design bilingual sites so if you could suggest another method to access websafe Japanese fonts in muse I'd be most grateful. Ideally I'd like to keep my operating system in English.

Are you not seeing ヒラギノ角ゴ Pro W3, ヒラギノ明朝 Pro W3, Osaka－等幅 in the Web Safe fonts section in Japanese version of Muse?
If so, please post a screenshot.
As for using Arial, please note that Arial does not include Japanese characters. The browser/OS will use a fallback font, which is why it appears to work. However, different fallback fonts may be used for different site visitors, so your won't have a consistent look-and-feel.

Chinese Web Safe Fonts

Is that correct that there is no way to use Chinese web safe fonts in Muse?
I've been looking around and found only a few references but no solutions. It's quite surprising because it's not only a deal-breaker for me, needing Chinese fonts for a lot of my projects, but I believe also for an ever growing number of designers targeting Chinese speaking audience. And it's not like that there are no web safe Chinese fonts out there (to name just a few: Hiragino Sans GB (冬青黑体简体中文) Microsoft Yahei (微软雅黑) Simsun (宋体) Simhei (黑体)).

Unfortunately you cannot use Chinese web safe fonts , you can try self-hosting if you can find Chinese fonts that can be licensed for use on the web.

Web Safe Colors for iTunes U interface

I am running into problems with changing the look and feel of my iTunes site. When I try to change the color scheme, it is telling my that my color choices are not web safe. I am trying to use color schemes that fall within our university's identity standards. Is there a way around the web safe colors within iTunes U, or am I stuck with what?

There are 2 colors which must be web safe - Section box heading background color and Section box heading text color.
The tools mentioned above can help you find a near match. Photoshop/ImageReady can do this in the color picker if you use the "web safe" colors checkbox.
You can also calculate it based on the fact that the R,G,B values for web safe colors are always based on the values 00,33,66,99,CC,FF. If you have a color, for example #4000D7, you can "round" each value to the nearest match. 40 rounds to 33, 00 rounds to 00, D7 rounds to CC. This means the closest web safe color is #3300CC.

The problem I've encountered is that text generated by a variable will only display as a web safe font and not always the same one across machines. Also different developers are seeing different font options. For instance on my machine, Helvetica LT 75 Bold is listed, but no other Helvetica options. Another developer has Helvetica LT 77 Bold Condensed instead.
My questions are:
Is there a list of web-safe fonts that CP8 will use?
Can this list be expanded somehow?

Web safe fonts really doesn't have the same meaning as something like web safe colors. While you will generally be OK with selecting a web safe font, it's only web safe in the concept of a font then defaulting to a font on the end users computer that they actually have installed. The default types are serif, sans-serif, and monotype, but then you have more distinct variations which you can see here, CSS Web Safe Fonts.
You'll need to keep in mind that not every person has Arial or Times New Roman installed. Because of this you may have someone that has Helvetica or Times. Both fall under their same respective font families, but will look a little different depending on what the user has installed.

Accordion control CSS styles only support Websafe colours?

I'm experimenting with styling controls using CSS by messing about with the style for my Accordion control. Here's my current CSS

If I change the selectedFillColors to #f5f5f5, #f5f5f5 or some other non-web-safe colour, the Accordion selected fill colours revert to the Flex default. Same seems to apply to other colours too.
I have a project coming up that has specific colours; is there a way for me to use 'any' colour in the CSS style? Am I just going crazy? :-)

I have read the white paper that you have referred to in your response and have included the following in the Header section of my Reports Region -- I am using a custom CSS to format the Table Headers <th> and the table data <td>:

The table data is working based on the CSS but the table headings are still not working correctly and the substitution string #HEAD# is sending the #HEAD# as output on my report at the top. I understood that by placing the reference to the .CSS after the #HEAD# that it would bypass the classes from the core.css file. But obviously this is not working. I also tried the same code above in the page html header to see if it worked but received the same results.
Any ideas?

Unfortunately you cannot use Chinese web safe fonts , you can try self-hosting if you can find Chinese fonts that can be licensed for use on the web.

I use a web site called ACRIS- up until yesterday I could access all parts of the site, including calling up images of deeds. Now I can no longer get the images via firefox, but can them via windows explorer. Why? How do I fix this?

I use a web site called ACRIS- it allows me to access NYC Finance dept records- specifically images of deeds. Up until yesterday I had no problem. Then without any apparent reason I could access all parts of the site, but could not access the deed images. First I thought it was a problem on their end, which sometimes happens, but after waiting 24 hours I was still having the problem. Then I tried windows explorer and it worked without any problem. How do I fix this?

First question I would ask is what has changed recently? Did you add any new extensions or add-ons?
I'd try starting Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If you don't have the issue while all of your add-ons, extensions, and themes are disabled, you can try adding them back in one by one until you find the culprit. You should look at the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting-extensions-themes Extensions and Themes troubleshooting guide ] and the [[Troubleshooting plugins]] article as well.
