Using Oracle SE RAC 10gR2 or 11gR2 on NetApp NAS

Hi,
I'd like to know if Oracle certifies Oracle SE RAC 10gR2 or 11gR2 on NAS storage like NetApp FAS2552A dual controller, 24 x 900 GB SAS, 8x 10GbE + 4x 1GbE, 7-
mode, iSCSI, CIFS, NFS, FCP.
I have read some documents by Oracle and, in my opinion, it seems that the best approach is: NetApp NAS with iSCSI.
Reading NetApp documentation it seems that NetApp NAS has a proprietary protocol to manage storage (ONTAP ?).
Is the NetApp approach to manage storage for Oracle RAC a certified solution ?
Thank you very much

I run Oracle RAC on NetApp without any problems. I suggest you work with NetApp. They will be able to answer questions about their specific hardware. They also have documentation on how to configure their disk solution specifically for Oracle RAC databases.
HTH,
Brian

  • Does managing Oracle 10g RAC with ASM require full root access?

    We currently have three entirely separate support areas, Unix, Storage and DBA. We're now considering using Oracle 10g RAC with ASM and as part of the assessment trying to work out if we can still draw similar support boundaries. I know that installing RAC and configuring ASM requires root access but will DBA continue to need root access to manage & support RAC? If so, does anyone know if the commands they need can be RBAC'd or if we just need to share root access going forwards. I've had a look at a number of docs including http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/rac.102/b14197/toc.htm. which is fairly informative but none of them seem to mention the requirement for root access on Solaris. I'm guessing they just assume that it's available, but that's not generally the case in our environment.
    All advice / info welcome!

    I would have thought that the only reason you would need root access once RAC and ASM had been set up would be to add more disks to the ASM configuration. This would be needed to change the ownership on the raw LUNs or to make additions to metasets (SVM/Oban) or diskgroups (VxVM/CVM). Beyond that, I can't imagine needing root access.
    I'm sure others will chime in if they can think of other reasons!

  • Differences between oracle 10gr2 and 11gr2 warehouse bulider

    Hi All,
    Could you please let me know the main differences between Oracle 10gr2 and Oracle 11gR2 warehouse builder.
    Also , it would be great if anyone point me to the document where i can see the major differences.
    Thanks,
    Naveen.

    Hi Naveen,
    The major difference between OWB10gR2 and 11gR2 is the target RDBMS.
    In 10gR2 you have to use ORACLE as your target RDBMS (unless you are going for DB Gateways, that is a complete different story).
    Where as in 11gR2 allows you to use any RDBMS as your target system . This is achieved by Code-Template mapping.
    All is needed is that proper jdbc driver for the target system.
    Also 11gR2 supports OBIEE RPD creation and etc.

  • Can we have separate 10gR2 RAC CRS and 11gR2 RAC CRS homes on  same Unix s

    We'd like to test the upgrade of our 10gR2 RAC databases to 11gR2 RAC.
    We have six databases on the same server and want to install a separate 11g RAC stack (11g CRS, 11g ASM, 11g RDBMS) and upgrade each 10g database from 10g RAC stack on same server (10g CRS, 10g ASM, 10g RDBMS) . Is it ok to have 10g CRS home and 11g CRS home same server? If not, how best to upgrade without buying more hardware?
    Thanks in advance,
    Lou

    In more detail, the main issue/question is whether there can be 2 Oracle CRS homes on the same server i.e. separate 10gR2 and 11gR2 CRS homes residing on the same server for the purposes of (gradually) upgrading all Oracle RDBMS homes from 10g RAC to 11g RAC.
    Can there be? What would be the implications for the OCR and voting disk? In our case 10g CRS has OCR and Voting Disk on raw devices. In 11gR2, these would need to be migrated/upgraded/stored in ASM, right?
    We have 6 10g rdbms homes in addition to the one 10g CRS home and one 10g ASM home. To upgrade can we
    - Install 11gR2 CRS in a separate home (this would now include ASM as well)
    - Install 11gR2 RDBMS home
    - Upgrade one of the 6 10g databases while leaving the others untouched as 10g databases in the separate 10g CRS, 10g ASM stack?
    Any ideas, pointers greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Lou

  • Java application (tomcat) and Oracle RAC 10gR2

    Hi, I have an Oracle RAC 10gR2 (10.2.0.3) on Suse Linux Enterprise Server (3 nodes).
    I have several application running on tomcat 5.X and tomcat 6.X with java 1.5 and java 1.6. Sometimes, because of hardware fail, network problems,... one of the nodes fails, and then the other 2 nodes still working and my database is up. However, the most of applications lose the connection with the database, and I must to restart the tomcat. I want to have a system more reliable and robust, and I want to prepare the tomcat's and java application for prevent it. I have read the http://drdobbs.com/java/222700353?pgno=1 and http://db360.blogspot.com/2007/01/is-your-java-application-failoverproof.html. I've been tried the example of the first url, but I don't connect with my database. However, I've probe the sample on another oracle rac (10.2.0.4) and it works. In the samples, it use the ucp.jar (11g) and ons.jar (10g) and ojdbc6.jar (11g driver).
    Anyone can help me how can I configure my application for I must not to restart the tomcats??
    Thanks you very much!!.

    The best solution for your problem is ORACLE SUPPORT.. Please raise an SR and coordinate with them.. GoodLuck!

  • Oracle 10g RAC using ASM - Storage Issue

    I’ve an issue related to Oracle 10g RAC.
    I’ve 2 node cluster each being Dell 2850 Server with RHEL 4.0
    I’ve EMC CX300 SAN storage with following partitions
    /orasoft     10 Gb          OCFS2 File system
    /oracrs          2 Gb          OCFS2 File system
    /orabackup      100 Gb          OCFS2 File system
    The datafiles are on ASM which is not directly visible in OS.
    I’ve common Oracle Home installed in /orasoft/db_1 which is shared by both nodes in cluster.
    I’ve faced an issue recently related to EMC storage.
    The /orasoft partition displays 1.4 Gb space available using df command.
    With both nodes sharing the common Oracle Home (/orasoft/db_1), when ever I try to touch a file I get an error as No Space left on device. I’m unable to start any service with the same reason.
    Is this setup correct ??
    Can anyone help me with this storage issue ??

    Need a clarification here...what do you mean by "Storage System"...do you mean a server/node or the SAN storage system. If you are referring to a server/node's local storage, then it would NOT be possible for use by RAC, since the disk space has to be shared among the nodes.
    Here is what you can do:
    - Create two partitions/devices (for example Disk_1 and Disk_2) in the SAN storage
    - Create a ASM disk group which would mirror Disk_1 to Disk_2.
    Again, please note that the partitions have to be visible and be accessible read/write from both the nodes/servers.

    Thanks

  • Using Clob with TopLink 9.0.4.5 and Oracle 10g RAC

    I am trying to store an XML file in a Clob type field of a DB table using TopLink 9.0.4.5 and Oracle 10g RAC and need some guidance about how to do it. I got some directions to start it with the Tip "How-To: Map Large Objects (LOBs) to Oracle Databases with OracleAS TopLink" but still need some more helps.
    When using the Oracle JDBC OCI driver, the tip gives the code block for a Clob field:
    DirectToField scriptMapping = new DirectToField();
    scriptMapping.setAttributeName("script");
    scriptMapping.setFieldName("IMAGE.SCRIPT");
    descriptor.addMapping(scriptMapping);
    As I understand, TopLink creates instances of the Descriptor class at run time for each of the descriptor files and stores them in a database session, where is the proper place (in SessionEvent of TopLinkSessionEventHandler?) for me to get a reference to such an instance of my Descriptor class in Java code so that I can add the above mentioned additional Mapping? Are the above String values of "script" and "IMAGE.SCRIPT" predefined in TopLink API? Can I accomplish the same thing just using the TopLink Workbench tool instead? If yes, please advise the detailed steps to do so.
    The tip also states to call the following code in case of using Clob:
    DatabaseLogin login = session.getLogin();
    login.useStringBinding();
    Should the above 2 lines of code be called after the following lines of code?
    SessionManager sessionManager = SessionManager.getManager();
    Server serverSession = (Server)sessionManager.getSession("MY_SESSION_NAME");
    Besides the above extra coding for the Session and Descriptor Mapping, is there any special handling in between Data model and DB table mapping? Can I map a Java String type to a DB Clob field using the Direct-to-field mapping?
    Appreciate any help.

    Never mind ....... I had already figured it out .....

  • PATCH Oracle RAC 10gR2 DB on Linux

    Hello,
    I want to patch 2 node RAC 10gR2 DB (Standard Edition) on SLES 11. I have patched signle instance DB with OPATCH, but never patched RAC DB, kind of very nervous. I am not able to find generally and also from MOS regarding step by step process to patch RAC 10gR2 on SLES OS. In the readme of the Patch, I do not find step by step detail of how to ....regarding RAC. Following is the information regarding the current setup, please have a look and suggest/help me, as it's a production DB and I'm little afraid to Patch it.
    I've also other general questions please, like:
    - In RAC, how many homes are normall there to patch? DB,CRS, Grid?
    - Clusterware (CRS) and ASM has same home?. Are they same?. Pathing any one means pathing both ASM and CRS, right?

    Hello,
    Thanks for the reply.
    What I noticed before that as ASM-GI has same home, so I need to apply one patch for that. After your reply I am planning to do it like that only.
    As I have posted in my main post the versions of patches to apply for Oracle Home. That seems somehow clear to me what to apply and,etc. Can you please suggest which Patch or how to find/select next patch version to apply to ASM/GI home please?
    When we select PATCH ADVISOR from MOS, for example in case of DB home, I select DB,Enterprise,Standard editio,9i,10g,11,d, OS Linux-x64,10.2.0.4. DB,OS version etc is OK, but I am confused what to select from that first drop down menu in order to select patch version for ASM/GI ??
    @onedba
    I am planning to Patch not upgrade.
    Thanks and regards.

  • Use Oracle RAC Database 10g on SunOS nova 5.9

    Hello!
    We use Oracle RAC Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.1.0.5.0 - 64bit that consist of two nodes on SunOS nova 5.9 Generic_117171-17 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V440.
    Connection string as follows:
    jdbc:oracle:thin:@(DESCRIPTION=(LOAD_BALANCE=ON)(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=host1)(PORT=1521))(ADDRESS=
    (PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=host2)(PORT=1521))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME=proddb))).
    Clustered Java application performs direct JDBC INSERT of record into database throw oracle.jdbc.pool.OracleDataSource.
    Table got the following fields:
    FIELD1 VARCHAR2(100 BYTE) NOT NULL,
    FIELD2 VARCHAR2(100 BYTE) NOT NULL,
    FIELD3 VARCHAR2(100 BYTE) NOT NULL,
    FIELD4 VARCHAR2(100 BYTE),
    FIELD5 VARCHAR2(100 BYTE),
    FIELD6 VARCHAR2(100 BYTE),
    FIELD7 INTEGER,
    FIELD8 BLOB,
    FIELD9 BLOB
    Approx in 60 milliseconds another application node performs SELECT of that record, which return void result. However next SELECT returns needed result.
    Defect is occurs with 50% probability.
    Whether problem is connected with defect in Oracle RAC/JDBC Driver?
    Thanks in advance!

    RAC propogates commit messages using a method which piggy-backs on the next available inter-instance message. I think it's called the Lampart Method, but anyways .... it means you have an uncontrollable delay between committed data in your two instances.
    Look at the init.ora parameter max_commit_propagation_delay, and consider setting it to 0. The parameter is briefly described in the Oracle Reference Guide.

  • How to use oracle servcies in roacle 10g rac

    hi all,
    I want to know how to use SERVICES in oracle 10g rac.I know how to create servcies i.e using srvctl create servcies or DBMS_SERVICES.
    I know servcies can be used with JOBS using DBMS_SCHEDULER but i wat ot know besides jobs what are all the things we can used with services.

    Yeah.That's right.
    But in my case mwe are having a ERP applicaiton that has been build on oracle forms, so here we are having aeprate forms.Lets suppose that one form name is MEMBER.
    and i have also created on servcie using
    srvctl add service -d DB -s MEM -r RAC1,RAC2 -a RAC3
    now my question how do i integrate this MEMBER form to services i.e MEM.
    Like we can use in case oj create scheduling jobs using dbms_scheduler, we are having one prameter job_class where er have to specify the name of the parameter
    but in my case how do i integrate it.
    I hope you understandb my question.

  • Using Oracle RAC VM tmeplates - Oracle Virtual Box

    Greetings - can any one guide me to use Oracle RAC vm templates using Oracle Virtual Box?
    Appreciated!

    There is no need to burn a DVD because Virtualbox can directly mount and boot from the .iso image you downloaded. It is usually a good idea to check the md5 checksum of your download with the number provided by the download page to verify your download is not corrupted. There are no problems installing any version of Oracle Linux under Virtualbox provided you have the right hardware. I suggest to check the Virtualbox documentation.
    Note: This is not a Virtualbox forum.

  • OWB 10gR2 and 11gR2 integrate which with oracle database versions

    I request a clear definite reply as I need to suggest the client to upgrade their production databases. I did try searching on the oracle sites, but did not get any sure answer.
    Question:
    The client has databases on 8i, 9i & 10g. Will OWB 10gR2 support these data sources?
    If not, either I will have to ask clients to upgrate 8i & 9i to oracle 10g or have them upgrade the same and also have them upgrade to OWB 11gR2.
    So, please confirm support of database versions for both OWB 10gR2 & OWB 11gR2.
    Thanks much!

    I already had the 'Release notes' link for both 10g and 11g which you provided.
    The issue is when I launch the URL, I am taken to https://support.oracle.com/CSP/ui/flash.html.
    Here I've to submit and register Sun Contract Number or Oracle Support Identifier. I don't have these details.
    Isn't there a simple way to get the valid information on platform-specific requirements?
    I mean this should be given easily on Oracle site.
    Thanks much!
