Using Oracle Software Illegally
Before i start, i just want all of you guys to know i have no intention of using Oracle Software illegaly.
Anyone can download Oracle 10g Software from Oracle's website. Right?
Lets say we have a Company and we need Oracle Database software to run our business. What if our company chooses not to pay a single penny to Oracle corporation and use the oracle software which we've downloaded by hiring an expert DBA. Will Oracle Corporation, ever be able to know that we are using Oracle Database software without paying the licence unless we seek technical Support from Oracle.
Will the freely downloaded Oracle Software work for multi-CPU machines?
In general, yes, once you get past the "prototype" phase, you need to license all your environments. What, exactly, defines the end of a "prototype" phase is obviously a bit sticky, but if you have a "production" environment, that almost always means that the development environment needs to be licensed.
Of course, any licensing questions should really be directed to Oracle Sales, who are the only ones that can provide a binding agreement. There may be wrinkles here based on the laws in your country, your existing licensing agreements, your relationship with Oracle, your particular business model, etc. Should you get caught in a disagreement about licensing, explaining that "some guy on the internet" (whether or not he has a playing card next to his name) told you that something was acceptable is not likely to go over well.

Which account use to install Oracle software?
Hi!
Windows 2003 Server SP2
Oracle 10gR2
I have a question to experience Oracle database administrators...
Is there any differences between installing RDBMS from "Administrator" account and installing RDBMS from separate account with administrators privilege?
I'm not asking about procedures of installation.
I suspect that creator in file system will be different.
There will be any other differences? In registry hive? In files of installed software?
If Oracle software will be installed from "Administrator" account and after that I will create "other" account with administrator privilage and member of "ora_dba" group and use this "other" account to managed installed software I will have any problems?
Thanks for any advice.Hello,
No, I've always installed Oracle with an "Administrator account" and, I don't remember
having a specific problem.
Anyway, if there's a problem which can prevent the installation, OUI will send you a
popup (for instance to stop a Service).
More over, you can check the installation "logs" also.
Best regards,
Jean-Valentin -
Is anyone using the Oracle Software Configuration Manager (SCM) feature?
I would like to provide version control over my forms development process (check in, check out, etc). I see that there is a built in Oracle Software Configuration Management tool. Has anyone used it?
Any pros?
Any cons?Hi Daniel, it looks like Bruce has succinctly and accurately described configuration of the ImportManager step above (8/13).
One thing I could add is that the Key Field for Manager ID field should be set to the LDAP attribute that contains the 'pointer' to a given person's manager.
For example, given John Smith's sample LDAP record with the following attributes and values:
givenName = John
sn = Smith
uid = jsmith01
mgrUid = mmartin51

Installing oracle on Linux using the SAP version of oracle software
Hello All,
I am trying to install 32bit oracle software on Linux 32 bit os using the SAP version of Oracle Install Software downloaded from marketplace. I have downloaded the required exe and rar files and unpacked them on my PC. The unpacked folder is uploaded in bin mode to the respective server under a common mountpoint. In the folder i have 4 .SAR files with other label files etc. I want to unarchive these .SAR files to get the runInstaller but running in to issues.
Here are the steps I tried:
1. I copied the SAPCAR exe from exe directory and tried to unpack the 4 .SAR files but got permission error. All these 4 .SAR files are owned by ora<sid> user id. I tried to do all these under root user still it fails.
ora<sid>@xxxyysapdbXX:/sapdata//Oracle32/51031674> SAPCAR -xvf OR110232.SAR
-bash: ./SAPCAR: cannot execute binary file
what am i missing?
Any help is greatly appreciated.If you have a 32bit OS then you need to use the 32bit binaries of SAPCAR - yes.
And:
Usually those SAR files are unpacked by the installation program sapinst, why do you unpack them manually?

I am new to using OracleWelcome to the forum: please read the FAQ and forum sticky threads (if you haven't done so already), and ensure you've updated your profile with a real handle instead of "938319".
You'll get a faster, more effective response to your questions by including as much relevant information as possible upfront. This should include:
<li>Full APEX version
<li>Full DB/version/edition/host OS
<li>Web server architecture (EPG, OHS or APEX listener/host OS)
<li>Browser(s) and version(s) used
<li>Theme
<li>Template(s)
<li>Region/item type(s)
With APEX we're fortunate to have a great resource in apex.oracle.com where we can reproduce and share problems. Reproducing things there is the best way to troubleshoot most issues, especially those relating to layout and visual formatting. If you expect a detailed answer then it's appropriate for you to take on a significant part of the effort by getting as far as possible with an example of the problem on apex.oracle.com before asking for assistance with specific issues, which we can then see at first hand.
Thanks for posting the complete code, it makes it so much easier to understand the problem, but always post code wrapped in tags<tt>\...\</tt> tags to preserve formatting and special characters.
and I am trying to create an add/insert stored procedure for a table.Does this have anything to do with APEX, for which this is the forum? General SQL & PL/SQL matters should be directed to the {forum:id=75} forum.

commit;

rollback;

Commits should be issued by end user/client software on completion of a transaction. This means <tt>commit;</tt> should almost never appear in PL/SQL code. The main exception to this is in <tt>dbms_job/secheduler</tt> scheduled processes that have no client or UI. If this code is executed from APEX, then APEX issues more than enough commits anyway.
exceptions are just a way of ensuring your code is buggy.<tt>when others</tt> exceptions are just a way of ensuring your code is buggy.

Looking for some help with using Oracle stored procedures in vb2010
First off thank you to whoever lends me a hand with my problem. A little background first I am in a software development class and we are currently building our program using VB (I have no experience in this), and Oracle(currently in a Oracle class so I know how to use Oracle itself just not with VB).
I am using vb2010 express edition if that helps. Currently I have a stored procedure that takes a 4char "ID" that returns a position (ie, salesperson,manager ect). I want to use the position returned to determine what vb form is displayed (this is acting as a login as you dont want a salesperson accessing the accountants page for payroll ect).
Here is the code I have currently on the login page of my VB form
Imports Oracle.DataAccess.Client
Imports Oracle.DataAccess.Types
Public Class Login
Dim conn As New OracleConnection
Private Sub empID_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles empID.Click
End Sub
Private Sub LoginBtn_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles LoginBtn.Click
conn.ConnectionString = "User ID = Auto" & _
";Password = ********" & _
";Data Source = XE"
conn.Open()
Dim sq1 As String = "Return_Position" 'name of procedure
Dim cmd As New OracleCommand(sq1, conn)
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
cmd.Parameters.Add(New OracleParameter("I_EmpID", OracleDbType.Char, 4)).Value = Emp_ID.Text
Dim dataReader As OracleDataReader = cmd.ExecuteReader
dataReader.Read()
Dim position As New ListBox
position.Items.Add(dataReader.GetString(0)) 'were I am getting an error, I also tried using the dataReader.getstring(0) to store its value in a string but its a no go
If position.FindStringExact("MANAGER") = "MANAGER" Then
Me.Hide()
Dim CallMenu As New Menu()
CallMenu.ShowDialog()
End If
LoginBtn.Enabled = False
End Sub
I have read the oracle.net developer guide for using oracle in vb2010 and have successfully gotten through the document however they never use a stored procedure, since the teacher wants this program to user a layered architecture I cannot directly store sql queries like the document does, thus the reason I want to use stored procedures.
This is getting frustrating getting stuck with this having no background in VB, I could easily do this in c++ using file i/o even through it would be a pain in the rear....Hello,
I am calling Oracle 11g stored procedures from VB.Net 2010. Here is a code sample (based on your code) you should be able to successfully implement in your application.
Please note that you may have to modify your stored procedure to include an OUT parameter (the employee position) if it doesn't have it yet.
Private Sub LoginBtn_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles LoginBtn.Click
Dim sProcedureName As String = "Return_Position" 'name of stored procedure
Dim ORConn as OracleConnection, sConn as String
Dim sPosition as String, sDataSource as String, sSchema as String, sPWD as String
Dim cmd As OracleCommand
'please provide below sDataSource, sSchema and sPWD in order to connect to your Oracle DB
sConn = "Data Source=" & sDataSource & ";User Id=" & sSchema & ";Password=" & sPWD & ";"
ORConn = New OracleConnection(sConn)
ORConn.Open()
cmd = New OracleCommand(sProcedureName, ORConn)
With cmd
.CommandType = Data.CommandType.StoredProcedure
'input parameter in your stored procedure is EmpId
.Parameters.Add("EmpID", OracleDbType.Varchar2).Value = Emp_ID.Text
.Parameters.Item("EmpID").Direction = ParameterDirection.Input
'output parameter in your stored procedure is Emp_Position
.Parameters.Add("Emp_Position", OracleDbType.Varchar2).Direction = ParameterDirection.Output
.Parameters.Item("Emp_Position").Size = 50 'max number of characters for employee position
Try
.ExecuteNonQuery()
Catch ex As Exception
MsgBox(ex.Message)
Exit sub
End Try
End With
sPosition = cmd.Parameters.Item("Emp_Position").Value.ToString
'close Oracle command
If Not Cmd Is Nothing Then Cmd.Dispose()
Cmd = Nothing
'close Oracle connection
If Not ORConn Is Nothing Then
If not ORConn.State = 0 Then
ORConn.Close()
End If
ORConn.Dispose()
End If
ORConn = Nothing
If UCase(sPosition) = "MANAGER" Then
Me.Hide()
Dim CallMenu As New Menu()
CallMenu.ShowDialog()
End If
LoginBtn.Enabled = False
End Sub
If you need further assistance with the code, please let me know.

Can anyone suggest what could be the reason behind this?Dear user13295317,
Here is the error explanation;
Oracle Error :: TNS-12533
TNS:illegal ADDRESS parameters
Cause
An illegal set of protocol adapter parameters was specified.
In some cases, this error is returned when a connection cannot be made to the protocol transport.
Action
Verify that the destination can be reached using the specified protocol.
Check the parameters within the ADDRESS section of TNSNAMES.ORA.
Legal ADDRESS parameter formats may be found in the Oracle operating system specific documentation for your platform.
Protocols that resolve names at the transport layer (such as DECnet object names) are vulnerable to this error if not properly configured or names are misspelled.Hope That Helps.

Using Oracle Text in Oracle XML DB .
Hi all ,
The idea is simple ,i need to index all stored files in Oracle XML DB and the index should stay in Oracle DB . Using some 3 party index software is also possible but you need to write a mapping to move the index file in Oracle DB .
So i thought of using Oracle Text but i am not sure about how to retrieve such a document from Oracle XML DB , let me say over ftp or http ? . And if these documents are password protected -> how can Oracle Text allow this ?[11gR2 XMLDB Developers Guide -- Full-Text Search over XML Data|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/appdev.112/e10492/xdb09sea.htm#i1006756] would be the first place to start.
For document display, there a bunch of potential solutions, you can look at [XML DB Repository|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/appdev.112/e10492/xdb03usg.htm#insertedID18], or the Text Application Developers Guide [Presenting Documents in Oracle Text|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/text.111/b28303/view.htm#i1006687] .
Password protected documents can't be indexed using the auto_filter. -
Error in installing Oracle Software while adding node in RAC
Hi All
Oracle Version: 11.1.0.6.0
Linux
In the RAC environment, I am in the process of adding a node to the existing rac environment.
I have succssfully installed cluster software in the new node. all gsd, ons and vip services are running perfectly for new node in the existing and new nodes.
Next step, I started installing oracle software by executing the script $ORACLE_HOME/oui/bin/addNode.sh.
Here after specifying the the new node information (public host, private host and vip details) and when I pressed next,
OUI is giving following error - "Error occured while retrieving node numbers of the existing nodes. Please check if clusterware home is properly configured".
I ran olsnodes -n, it is giving proper node number.
Can somebody help me in identifying the problem and solution.
ThanksI am hitting the same issue, my problem was when I added the new node initially it fails because of the hint8-priv1. I followed the link below to remove and cleanup the last install. olsnode show only my existing nodes NOT including the new node.
http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B12037_01/rac.101/b10765/adddel.htm
then I ran
./addNode.sh -silent CLUSTER_NEW_NODES={hint-8} CLUSTER_NEW_PRIVATE_NODE_NAMES={hint8-priv1} CLUSTER_NEW_VIRTUAL_HOSTNAMES={hint8-vip}
I am getting this when use command line:
Error ocurred while retrieving node numbers of the existing nodes. Please check if clusterware home is properly configured.
SEVERE:Error ocurred while retrieving node numbers of the existing nodes. Please check if clusterware home is properly configured.
also run addNode.sh via GUI, the new node name still listed and can't continue.
BTW, adding new node should support online, shutdown is not required -
Has anyone ever created an iWeb site and used Olive Software to show a catalog or book?
Just wondering if it will work.

thanksI think when you purchase music you buy it for your personal use. Also, many of the casual uses of media may be "illegal" but the cost for coming after someone using a song as the background of a video may be more than they'd get in recompensation. And, if you ever get "popular" enough to get noticed (hamsterdance you'd have to either give up your hard earned work, HOPEFULLY for some money, or remove the audio from your video, possibly changing the feel of it.
As an example of this, Drawn Together has music that they licensed for use when shown on TV. When they produced the DVD, since the license didn't include DVD use, they had to produce alternate songs. Now, Drawn Together isn't exactly a small time internet phenomena, but it does illustrate that not only do you need a license, you need a license for "specific" uses, especially if you're going to be making a good deal of money. Today any of us may be small, but definitely something to think about if a site or video "catches on".
I've got one song on one of my pages that is unlicensed, but I low-fi'd the music because I like the artists and I'd rather people who like the song go to the site and purchase it (the video even has a link to their site!). However, if they contacted me and told me to remove it, I wouldn't put up a big fight about it. Just because technology enables me to do something doesn't mean it's legal -
Using my software to convert videos for another user - how do I sync it ?
I have been using a software to convert dvd for ITouch with great effect. now I want do do same for a friend - but am worried that when I syn i will loose all that's currently on her iTouch. How can I do this?
Before someone points out that we cannot discuss of even act like converting a DVD is possible because it is allegedly illegal, you are not asking that. You, by magic we assume, can do this. You are asking whether you will lose what is on her iPod.
I am not sure you can sync her iPod from your system but if you did you'd want to set it to only sync what you checked and then only check that one movie.
I wonder... is there a reason yo cannot just move the converted file from your computer to hers and let her import it?

Using Oracle Database Express Edition in development environment
Hi All,
I have doubt regarding the usage Oracle Database Express Edition in Development environment. I am not sure weather I can ask a non technical question here or not. Pleas forgive me if I have done any thing wrong.
I am working in an IT company where we take up projects outsourced by our clients. As part of our current project we are making some modification to a web application used by an institution. Our client is using Oracle Data Base standard edition. Due to budgetary constraints of our Company we can not set up a Oracle standard edition data base in our development environment.
So would it be illegal if we use Oracle Database Express Edition in our development environment? We can guarantee that only our internal development team which comprise a maximum of 10 people will have access to this development database and this development data base will never be opened to our Client for their business purpose(Who have their own Oracle standard edition in their environment). As part of the project we delver only table DDL script and stored procedure to our client and they put it in their environment.The sole purpose of a internal Express database will be development only.
Could some one please tell me if it would be violation of license agreement if we install Oracle Database Express Edition in our development environment.Hi Paul,
Actually I have already gone through the Oracle Technology Network Developer License Terms for Oracle Database 11g Express Edition . But was not quiet clear about the content. It says in the license terms that "We grant you a nonexclusive, nontransferable limited license to use the programs for: (a) purposes of developing, prototyping and running your applications for your own internal data processing operations". Does the term "your application" includes an application we are developing for another company. Since the Express database is installed in the development environment only and is not opened to any one else not even for Our client it definitely falls under the term "internal data processing operations" right? -
Trying to use Oracle Locator for latitude and longitude proximity searches
I am prototyping using Oracle Locator to do proximity searches and other spatial operations within the database in our software products. I’ve got it working fine in SQL Server, where geodetic is built in as well as geometric features, but with Oracle we’re trying to restrict ourselves to the Locator features so our customers are forced to buy the add-on. I am getting perplexing results, as you can see if you run the little test program I wrote.
I am using lat and long as the point coordinates. I am inserting the data using
SDO_GEOMETRY(2001, 4326, SDO_POINT_TYPE(?, ?, null), null, null
Then I am doing the search with
SELECT pointname, SDO_NN_DISTANCE (1) distance_in_miles
FROM geotest g
WHERE SDO_NN(g.geopoint, sdo_geometry(2001, 4326, SDO_POINT_TYPE(38.683, 123.083, NULL), NULL, NULL), 'distance=1000 unit=mile', 1) = 'TRUE'
ORDER BY distance_in_miles
I am getting distances from 56 to 86 units, whatever the units are.
Am I attempting the impossible with Locator, to use lat and long and then expect the sdo_nn function to work in miles?

21 rows selectedCouple of things that we found out using sdo_nn here...
It works...but the knobs need to be turned in the right order...
You may have done this already...but here is what we have...
a. we create our table containing the location sdo_geometry column ..( in our case the column is called location )
b.We loaded the data..If you elected to use a partitioned table for your spatial data and created the corresponding spatial index as local...your sql will need to account for that.if your index is global ..don't worry about it
c. We inserted the metadata...this needs to be done once per table...by either the dba or the schema owner...
INSERT INTO USER_SDO_GEOM_METADATA (TABLE_NAME, COLUMN_NAME, DIMINFO, SRID)
VALUES ('<YOUR TABLE NAME>', '<SPATIAL COLUMN NAME>',
MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ARRAY
(MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('LONGITUDE', -180.0, 180.0, 0.5),
MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('LATITUDE', -90.0, 90.0, 0.5)
8307);
COMMIT;
If this is not done before the spatial index is created...stuff won't work...
d. create your spatial index
e. our query looked something like this...( I changed the table names )
This returns the top 30 results sorted by distance in feet...
SELECT LOCATION_KEY,
result_center_distance
FROM
SELECT LOCATION_KEY,
SDO_NN_DISTANCE(1) result_center_distance
FROM LOCATION_OWNER.D_LOCATION dlocation
WHERE SDO_NN(dlocation.LOCATION,
MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY(2001,8307,MDSYS.SDO_POINT_TYPE(-97.07845,33.138006,null),null,null), 'SDO_NUM_RES=31 unit=FOOT distance=5800.0 SDO_MAX_MEMORY=50000000', 1) = 'TRUE'
ORDER BY 2
WHERE ROWNUM <= 31
We had to use this structure because our index is local...and sdo_nn will return the sdo_num_res results for each partition...so you need to get the results first..then treat it as a top-n query...
If you index is global...this should work
SELECT LOCATION_KEY,
SDO_NN_DISTANCE(1) result_center_distance
FROM LOCATION_OWNER.D_LOCATION dlocation
WHERE SDO_NN(dlocation.LOCATION,
MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY(2001,8307,MDSYS.SDO_POINT_TYPE(-97.07845,33.138006,null),null,null), 'SDO_NUM_RES=31 unit=FOOT distance=5800.0 SDO_MAX_MEMORY=50000000', 1) = 'TRUE'
ORDER BY 2
If you want the distance in MILE...replace FOOT by MILE...
good luck...
