Using os9 on a laptop running OSX?

Hi Guys,
I'm new to Macs so if I saay something stupid, just slap me.
I have a Clamshell 366 running OSX Panther but a prog I am trying to use (an external hard drive gizmo) requires OS 9.
When I tried to install the software, I got a message saying that there was no OS9 on my system.
So, does that mean I have to buy a copy of OS9 and install that on my clamshell.
If I do that, will I overwrite the OSX?
Is there another way?
Thanks,
Steve

Hi, Steve -
OSX and OS 9 are designed to cohabit the same volume - neither will overwrite the other.
OS 9 (versions OS 9.1 and later) can be used within OSX as Classic - in that mode OS 9 is used as a program (not as an operating system) in order to provide an environment in which many OS 9 programs can be run.
I assume by Clamshell 366 you mean an iBook 366MHz machine - that description can be either an original iBook, or an iBook (FireWire) model.
Your machine can use OS 9 as a stand-alone OS. If it is an original iBook (which came with OS 8.6), it can use any version of OS 9. If it is an iBook (FireWire) model (which came with OS 9.0.4), it can use a model-specific OS 9.0.4 Install CD or a retail OS 9.1 or 9.2.1 Install CD.
Retail OSX packages do not include any provisions to install Classic (OS 9). You will need to acquire an OS 9 Install CD of adequate version, boot to it and install OS 9, then update it as needed via download updaters. I suggest acquiring a retail OS 9.1 or 9.2.1 Install CD - not only will that save on time when installing download updaters, but those CDs have current versions of OS 9's Disk First Aid and Drive Setup utilities. Provided that the device you wish to attach is compatible with OS 9.2.x, I'd suggest an OS 9.2.1 Install CD as the best choice.
You can usually get retail OS 9 Install CD's at sites like these -
http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/index.html - Apple Reseller
http://www.applerescue.com/
EBay is another possibility.
Regardless of the source, be sure to get a retail OS 9 Install CD - those are white, with a large gold 9 on them; the retail OS 9 Install CD's have a universal installer; model-specific Install CD's do not.
In case you need the updaters -

There can be some issues when installing OS 9 on a drive already occupied by OSX.
• The OS 9 installer may return a message to the effect that there is an unknown version of OS 9 already present. That message results from the installer mistaking a stadard OSX folder as being a peculiar OS 9 System Folder - it is not, but the OS 9 installer is not savvy enough to know that. The solution is to do a Clean Install of OS 9. Note that a Clean Install of OS 9 removes nothing -
Article #58176 - Mac OS 8, Mac OS 9: Performing a Clean Installation
• If the hard drive is not visible on the desktop when you boot the machine to the OS 9 Install CD, that would indicate that the hard drive was probably last formatted using OSX's Disk Utility, and the option to install OS 9 drivers was not selected. In the absence of those drivers no OS 9 can mount the drive. This Apple KBase article addresses that issue -
Article #106849 - Disk Is Available in Mac OS X But Not in Mac OS 9
That article mentions one possibility of recovery without re-formatting the drive - while booted to the OS 9 Install CD, run Drive Setup (it's in the Utilities folder on the CD), select the drive in the list, then choose Update Driver from the Functions menu. This is a non-destructive function, i.e. it will not erase the drive.
Most of the time that does not work, and the only recourse then is to re-initialize the drive; if that is done using OSX's Disk Utility, be sure the option to install OS 9 drivers is selected. Note - doing this will erase everything on the drive, so be sure you have backed up everythig you do not want to lose before doing it.
<hr>
There are work-arounds if you do not need a bootable OS 9 install, that is if you need it only for use as Classic.
Unlike OSX, an OS 9 System Folder can be copied via a simple Finder copy process and retain its functionality. This means you may be able to copy an OS 9 System Folder (of adequate version) from another source, and use it as Classic.
Some folk have found that copying the OS 9 System Folder from an OS 9 Install CD is sufficient. Note, though, that that System Folder has a very limited assortment of control panels and extensions, and many services will not be available.
Another possible source is an OS 9 Syatem Folder on another machine. Provided that it was a complete install of OS 9, better results are usually obtained.
Note - since a copied System Folder from a CD will not be bootable, nor will one from another machine (unless it was specifically created as a universal install), then download updates for OS 9 will not be usable to up the version of that copied System Folder (the installers on all OS 9 download updates require the machine be booted to OS 9).

I have never been able to use the Macmail feature.  Running OSX 10.4.11, and the problems appear to be related to the fact that when I originally registered my computer with apple, I used an old e-mail address which is now defunct.  Have since upgraded the e-mail address in account manger, but it still locks me out and rejects my user name and password when I try to log in.  It seems it established an account for me automatically when I first fired the beast up, but now the Macmail program is uncooperative with me.  Any assistance would be much appreciated, Thanks

Hi rbcjoker76, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Sounds like some needed System Fonts wre replaced by bad ones. Y also have Font Book in Applications for validating fonts & checking for duplicates.
Required Fonts from 10.3, much the same in 10.4...

You may have to get Pacifist...
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
then intall the Fonts what you need from your Install Disk.
Or do a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

  • How to import metadata from Address Book on external hard drive to new laptop running OSX 10.8.3?

My old MacBook died a painful death.  I retrieved the hard drive and have it in a portable enclosure that has a USB connection.  I can see the old Address Book on it, but when I transfered the Address Book application to my new MacBook Pro running OSX 10.8.3, the application will transfer, but it won't open because it is not supported on the newer MacBook.  I searched around the old hard drive for any files that could be related to the Address Book contact data.  I found metadata files for each of my contacts.  I can get the metadata to transfer to the new MacBook, but I can't seem to do anything with it.
I tried using Migration Assistant, doing it manually, trying to import the metadata using "import" feature on the new version of Address Book.  Can't seem to find anything that works.
Any suggestions?  Thank you in advance.

If you open a contacts database from an earlier version of OS X, the data should be imported automatically. Is that what you tried to do?

  • What Firefox version choices do I have for using Firefox on new laptop running Win 7 64-bit, and how do I move bookmarks from current laptop running Firefox 3.5.13 to new laptop?

Currently running Firefox 3.5.13 on laptop using Windows XP pro sp3 and will want to move my bookmarks to a new laptop. New laptop uses Win 7 pro 64-bit OS. I have read too many conflicting reports about Firefox and Win 7 and understand that Firefox is working on a true 64-bit version. What are my choices for a stable web browser for new laptop and which particular version of Firefox is recommended and the pros and cons of that suggestion? (I believe one can run Firefox 32 bit version in the 64 bit environment, but is that the best choice?) I have not installed Firefox on new laptop yet and am eager to dump IE. This is being posted from my old laptop. Thanks ...

If you go to this link you will be assured by Microsoft and Win7 "new" app checking and making sure that all drivers and software you have is compatible with Win7 64 bit. And in this article it states that Firefox version 3 IS compatible and designed for 64 bit OS, hm mm well as you know that is incorrect!! As of today Mozilla Firefox is not designed for a 64 bit computer. Thank you for your honesty and it saved me a big headache By being upnt and honest. my books!! Great job!!

  • Am using Macbook pro mid 2010 running on OSX 10.9.5. It does not read my old Seagate back up plus ITB ext hard disk which opens and works on snow leopard. The back ups were made on snow leopard and mountain lion. How do I make it work on Mavericks?

I have been making back ups on a Seagate Back up plus drive on a macbook pro running on Mountain lion. Sadly the mac was stolen and all I had was the seagate back up. I tried opening it on my old iMac running on snow leopard and after several visits to this forum managed to open it. The data was safe and sound. Now I have received a hand me down macbook pro which runs on osx 10.9.5. I'm assuming there is a compatability issue as the drive does not come on at all when I hook it up to the usb port. I checked the seagate drive once again on the imac and its light came on on that system. Then I suspected there may be a problem with this macbook pro usb port. But it seemed to work fine when i hooked my camera cord into it. Is it that I must reinstall mavericks. In which case how do I back up before reformatting or reinstalling. BTW I did the command+ R thingy and repaired my internal Hard disc which was showing errors. What do I do next, your help is most appreciated if you have had a similar problem.

Your 2010 MBP would be able to handle Yosemite, but I would strongly suggest that you get the current problem sorted out before trying to upgrade to Yosemite. I'd also recommend another backup that isn't created by Time Machine if you are thinking of upgrading. SuperDuper and CarbonCopyCloner can make bootable clones of hard drives. If you clone your existing system to a fresh external drive, you would be able to boot from that drive and recover quickly in the event that your Yosemite upgrade didn't work out. Time Machine backups are not 100% reliable.
It's possible that, if your internal HD is the one that shipped with your MBP in 2010, it may be failing. If it keeps needing repairs, that is probably a sign that it is approaching the end of its useful life.
Have you run Disk Utility's Repair tool on the external drive as well?
I mentioned the hub because some people have reported here that attaching their USB 3 drives through a USB 2 hub solved some disconnection problems. A good-quality powered USB 2 hub won't cost much.
My most recent brush with random disconnections involved a nice new OWC drive enclosure. I used the cable that came with the drive, but the drive kept disconnecting. Using a different cable solved the problem. You wouldn't expect that what appeared to be a high quality cable would be a problem straight out of the box, but it was.

My computer is saying it can't find the file 'iTunes64.msi' when I try to update or redownload iTunes how do I fix this? I've tried just about everything I can think of. I am using a dell laptop running windows 7 and have tried changing the file location to run the update in all of my iTunes files as well as when I've tried reinstalling it.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

I have an IMAC and I'm running OSX 10.9.2.  I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.  In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.  Is this possible? Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.

  • When using a Foscam FI8910W IP Camera, how do I get the 2-way audio function to work? I have VLC as a video app in my applications folder. I am running OSX 10.8

Again, I am on a 2011 MBP, running OSX 10.8.4, and I use VLC as my default player. I bought a Foscam FI8910W Pan&Tilt camera, which has 2-way audio capability through the browser. I have looked online and the only people who have this camera who can also use their audio functions are those individuals who are on a PC running IE. The Foscam website says to fix this issue I must download VLC player. I had VLC before I ever heard of Foscam. Still no audio. When I sign onto my IP camera by inputting the IP address, the user name, and the encryption password, I can then view the camera. At the bottom, it has a URL that says (audio). Clicking this does only one thing - it tells me that I need a plug in to have audio support. The plugin is the VLC player. So I am back at square one. Please help.

I just went to the IP address to access my camera's software; however, there is no mention of audio settings or anything called ADPCM. The included software (CD) does not work with 10.8 - a fact left out by the manufacturer
