Using .otf files on Mac and PC?

I understand you can use the same .otf files both on Mac and PC.
1. Is this trouble free creating a document using these fonts on one platform and then opening the document on another platform and performing tasks with it... printing, creating PDF etc?
2. Is there any difference using Quarkxpress and Indesign with Opentype fonts?
3. If creating documents in Indesign and I need to convert these to Quarkxpress documents using a conversion plugin such as ID2Q is there any issues with these fonts.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Tim

Some answers:
1. I used OT fonts on Mac and PC and in InDesign and Quark with no font issues. They all showed up and worked in each program.
2. I can't remember what Quark was like in it's OT support (of ligatures, etc.), but it should be the same. You will notice differences in the kerning. Using ID's optical kerning or Quarks kerning tables the differences will be more pronounced, but either way expect some differences. Getting a handle on the differences can take some time.
3. Try to avoid moving between programs. If you can work all the way through in one, then you should. I have only ever moved files from Quark to InDesign, and it isn't pretty. Moving from ID to Quark sacrifices too much (no native psd files, no ai files) so I wouldn't think of it.

A .exe file is a Windows executable. OS X does not run Windows programs. If you need to use .exe files then you will need to install Windows on your Mac:
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Share files between Mac and Windows in same iMac with boot camp

    Hello,
I am new in using Mac and recently I buy a IMac 24" model.
I used to use PC a long time with a lot of old document.
I want to install Windows XP with boot camp.
But I also want to share my documents, music, video files between Mac and Windows in same iMac.
    How can I do this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Eric

Hi Eric and welcome to Discussions and the Apple world.
Mac OSX can read and write from Windows partitions (like the BootCamp Windows partition you are about to create) when using FAT32 as file system for Windows.
However with FAT32 you are limited to a partition size of 32GB.
Mac OSX can also read from Windows partitions that uses the NTFS file system, but it can not write to them unless you use a third-party helper like either Paragons NTFS for Mac http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ or NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/
Windows can not even see or use a Mac OSX partition without additional help by MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

  • Sharing linked files between mac and pc

    Dear Community and AI Support,
My team is trying to share AI files between Macs and PCs.  That works fine until we have Linked assets.  Once we have linked assets, AI either forgets to, or is unable to, let us relink more than one of the linked files.  We can't edit the links or even delete them.  The linked files are just ignored, leaving the file half empty.
We've tried hacking the paths directly in the .AI file, hoping to eventually write a perl script to help us switch back and forth. but no luck.  We assume there is a checksum or crc code or hash, etc..., as AI won't even try to open the file after that.
But to clarify the issue. here is an example of the Mac and PC links we need to switch between using an excerpt from the AI file.  These are valid, working directories on both platforms.

ooohhhhh very interesting.  I did a find and replace on all the strings, but no dice.  I didn't think to look at those types of data.  But now that you have mentioned it, perhaps I'll do a diff on the same file saved on both platforms to see what has been changed.  Should have already thought of it, but your note has made me check my assumptions.

  • Can I use iTunes in my Mac and also on my virtual machine in Parallels?

I have iTunes in the Mac and am totally happy with it. However, my library allows downloading of books, and some of them are only available in wma format. I have Windows XP in Parallels 5, and was able to download a book successfully in Parallels, using the software provided by the library. However, when I put my iPod in to try to transfer the files to it, iTunes in the Mac kept opening, and the software in Windows said it couldn't find the iPod. I tried designating the USB port for Parallels, but that didn't help. My iPod happens to be formatted for PC, so I think that wouldn't be the problem. So, my only way to get this book out of Windows would be to burn it onto 30 CDs.
My question is, is it possible to do what I'm trying to do--if so, do I need to open an iTunes account in Windows, and would it have to be a different account, or is it not possible to have two accounts in the same computer? If it's not possible I'll just give up on this idea and stick with mp3 formatted books, but if it is possible, could someone tell me how to do it? Thanks for any help you can provide. Barbara

Thanks, but please explain. I can't download wma files into Overdrive Media for the Mac, and had to install another version inside Parallels, and that's where the downloaded files are. How could I get those files into the Overdrive software on the Mac? Thanks, Barbara

  • Problems saving on a travel drive used for both my mac and pc

I have both an ibook and a pc laptop, so I use a Memorex travel drive to store many of my documents that I use on both computers. Since I have MSWord for Mac and MSWord on my PC, the majority of the files are Word files.
However, here's my problem: Many times, I will save a Word document from my Mac to the travel drive, and the next time I open the travel drive (whether on the Mac or PC), there is a 1kb file of whatever the saved document was, with the same name as the actual document, but with a ._ before the text. For example, a 45 kb file named "CrimSummary" is saved as such, but a 1kb file named "._CrimSummary" shows up on the travel drive as well. When I open this 1kb document, it is just 5 or so lines of symbols and such.
This whole ordeal happends with about half of the documents I save from the Mac onto the travel drive. It usually (maybe always) saves a functional copy of the document, so it does not seem to be saving this 1kb file instead of the actual file, but it makes me feel that there is something wrong with this situation. At first I thought I was ejecting the travel drive incorrectly, but I do not think that is the case - I eject both the travel drive icon and the "U3 system files" that came along with the drive - then pull the drive out. The drive is still lit, but I do not get any error messages, so I believe I am doing it correctly.
Further, I have a few strange files on the drive that are appearing: ".DS_Store", "Bootex", and a folder called ".trashes".
I really just want to iron this out, as I save very important documents on the drive and hope that this is not indicative of a larger issue with either laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

What you are seeing are hidden resource files which in OS X tell you how the folder/drive will look in Finder.
In OS X you don't see them, though Windows does pick them up.
You can safely ignore and delete them without worry.
It is normal behaviour to see these files.

  • Sharing Files between Mac and Windows XP PC

I have an small office with three computers. There is a new Mac that basically acts as the server. There is a shared folder on the computer. The other 2 computers are PCs. All permissions have been set on the Mac. The other 2 users are set as Administrators on the Mac and have the ability to Read and Write. The other 2 users can access the files, but they are not able to make any changes. The shared folder has may sub folders. Any ideas?

huh, i used migration assistant to create a user with all my old data. now i have 2 users. anyway, i was putting the old data i wanted (i plan to wipe out the old user) into the shared folder...and it was working fine. all of a sudden, i put files into the shared folder, and when i log in as the new user, i can't use the file. won't give me access.
i've enabled file sharing, the files and folders are marked as shared, and well...it seems like file sharing is broken.
    ...ideas?

  • Using same files with PS and Iphoto?

Again, I'm sure this one has been discussed b/4, however can't seem to find it.
When using PS on the Mac, can you use the same files with Iphoto? IE, are the files in the Mac OS file structure available to both applications? And if so, are there problems using both applications?
I like the ability of Iphoto to retrieve my IPhone photos, but prefer using PS for organization and managing.
    Thanks.

iPhoto has a preference to use PS as an external editor.
All photos will be saved in the "modified" folder in iPhoto.
    Hope this helps!

  • File organizing Mac and Xp

This could be a very simple question but I have not found my
answer anywhere. I have recently moved over to a Mac operating
system from Windows XP, and on my old XP machine my flles which I
kept in pertinant folders were organized alphabetically first and
not by extension. I have just started to use Dreamweaver on my Mac
Book Pro and find that all my files are first organizes by
extension then alphabetically and I was wondering if there was a
place I could tell Dreamweaver to organize only Alphabetically?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Using TimeMachine with one Mac and two HDD

    Hi
I was wondering if the following can be done with out loosing data and with out confusing TimeMachine:
Using one mac and with time machine going back and forth between 2 external HDD ?
in order to have 2 TimeMachine HDD (one at home and one on the move)
Did one of you did try this ?
If yes is it working fine ?
Thanks for sharing your feed back
    Regards

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
    Yes, that works fine.
The first backup to each drive will, of course, be a full one.
Thereafter, each backup will be an "incremental" one, of all the changes that have been made to your system since the last backup +*to that drive.+*
Of course, if you create a file at home, run a backup, then change the file and run another backup, your "home" backup will have both versions of that file. If you then do a backup to the other drive, it will only have the new version.
The more changes you make between drive swaps, the longer the first backup after the swap will be, since there are more changes to "catch up" with. In some cases, the volume of changes may cause Time Machine to do a "deep traversal," with a longer than usual "Calculating Changes" phase, to figure out what's changed and needs to be backed up.

  • Opening Powerpoint files in Mac and PC

Hi. I sometimes have to create presentations on my MacBook using Powerpoint (I know! Keynote is better and I love it.). I am using Powerpoint 2004 for Mac version 11. I recently discovered that I can't open some powerpoint files on Windows-based computers with Microsoft Powerpoint 2003 Professional Edition, but could open them with a 2002 version. Does this have something to do with the windows version or my Mac? Since I have to share the files with my colleagues, I often have to open the files from someone else's computer (which has a 2002 PPT version) then save the file to a PPT 97-2003 & 95 version just so my colleagues with a 2003 version can open the files. Is there a simpler way to solve this compatibility problem? Hope someone can help me. Thanks!

    Hi Orange Girl
I have tried to replicate your problem using two different versions of PowerPoint 2003 on two different computers and have managed to open the files without any problems.
Which specific versions of PowerPoint do you have on the Mac and the PC.
    On the Mac
    From the menu
    PowerPoint > About PowerPoint
    Example
    Version 11.0 (104441)
    On the PC
    From the menu
Help > About Microsoft Office PowerPoint
    Example
