Using overset text in Indesign CS6

I'm a designer who usually works in Illustrator. However, I just created my first catalog in Indesign CS6 and all my overplaced text on photos and
text layered over text effects are all coming up as errors. Can you please let me know if I need to put the text all on separate layers. In Illustrator I simply choose Appearance and select overprint. Please help.

....just figured it out. I realized my text boxes have an extra return in them....by turning on hidden characters, I was able to view the extra return. Thanks anyway!

Make sure the Fill color proxy (solid square, upper left corner of the swatches panel) is selected and in front, then choose a swatch.

Adding a Drop Shadow to text in InDesign CS6

I have no character styles in my recent installation of Cloud InDesign CS6 and want to know how I import these effects.

Character Styles and Drop Shadow, (an object-level effect), are not related. There is nothing to import.
To apply a drop shadow to text, select (black arrow) the text frame and choose Drop Shadow from the fx menu at the bottom of the Effects panel, (Window > Effects). The Drop Shadow dialog opens where you set the parameters of the effect.

I can't edit overset text in InDesign CS4

I have spent the last several hours trying to fix the overset text. Every time I click on the little red overset text in the lower right hand corner, another text box pops up. I have deleted it at least 150 times. I just cannot get it to work. I tried editing in story editor, but I've never used it, so I can't figure out how to do it. Ready to rip my hair out. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

As Kath says, the story editor is probably the place to start since you can at least see the text. It operates a lot like a low-end word processor.
It sounds like there is a problem in a line that prevents it from fitting in a frame. One common problem is that No Break has been applied to an entire paragraph or something similar (turning off hyphenation in narrow columns can do the same thing if you encounter a long string like a URL). Another common problem is that keep options are set in such a way that a paragraph cannot break. You,ll see style tags to the left of the text which can help you identify what styles are applied so you know where to start looking if the keeps are defined as part of a style.
Tables can also be an issue. ID will break a table between rows, but not mid-row. If a cell is too deep to fit the frame height it will exhibit the behavior you see. I think I've also seen a case where an entire table was set up as header rows, but I believe that caused ID to put one row per page, not to just go into overset.

Overset Text In InDesign

I've created a wall calendar in InDesign. In preflight, there are 80 errors, all overset text. Does this mean that the overset text just won't show up in print? Because if that's the case, I don't need it anyway. So would I need to delete it or deal with it at all if I don't need it printed? Thank you for any help. I'm still learning.

However, I always delete overset text, to avoid confusion and to be safe that
a third party person/print company opening the document won't be confused.
Different people work in different ways!

Interactive PDF Form Field Text properties InDesign CS6

I am new to InDesign CS6 (upgraded from CS4) and after advice when attempting PDF form creation.
Is there a way of defining text style of text colour font for the form field,
(in the same way thay is possible if I was editing the PDF within in the text properties of Acrobat).
Or do I need to export and change the font and colour properties from Acrobat (which would be a shame).

How do I use Quite Imposing in Indesign CS6?

My employer swears his previous designer used quite imposing through indesign on a daily basis, but I can't figure anything out about this. I know its a plugin, but I can't find my list of plugins anywhere either. All I need is to find the program, and I can figure out the settings myself, I just can't find the darn thing to begin with.

How do I typeset vietnamise text in Indesign CS6. Client is saying I need to use Unicode!?

Can anyone help me. I have a word document from the client thats in vietnamise. I copied and pasted the text and used Ariel regular in CS6.
the client has come back saying:
Our Vietnamese translators have advised there is a problem with the font on the two attachments. They suspect it may be because of using VNI font instead of Unicode, and as a result they are unable to read these documents.
Does anyone know how I can solve this?

You need to have fonts with Vietnamise characters. For example Minion Pro. That is all.

You can convert this text in any good text editor, which has the option "Reopen using encoding", For example Text Wrangler.
Yu can convert every Vietnamise glyphs using grep in InDesign too. But it is very time consuming job.

Scrolling selected text with Indesign CS6 to show different font style

Hi, I recently found I could highlight a paragraph and using font character style I could scroll through fonts changing whole paragraphs, I can't remember how I did this, I know it's a new feature with CC, I'm on CS6

Select the text you want to change. Click your cursor after the font name in the field. Press the up or down arrows, and you can see the selected text change.

Finder within InDesign CS6 cannot find files

When I use the finder within InDesign CS6 to search for images or InDesign files it won't find the files. This is especially challenging when I am trying to re-link images. (When I search outside of InDesign, I find them, no problem.) I'm running Mac OS 10.7.4. Any suggestions?

My question was not well worded, but I didn't know what other way to put it. Thanks for your help. Yes, I can browse to the images, but I'm trying to avoid that by doing a search for the file name in the search field. The search field won't let me find InDesign files either. I've included a screen shot of the dialog box to explain.

Crash with Indesign CS6 and Keyboard Maestro

Anyone else experiencing crashes when using Keyboard Maestro with Indesign CS6 on OSX Mavericks? (Latest update of all mentioned apps).
Indesign crashes when I try to copy certain items in Indesign, but it is not possible to narrow down which. Happends even when there are no macros installed in KBM. Therefore it seems like its the Keyboard Maestro Engine that causes the crashes.

I see then I believe Kglad's advice is on track with starting with updating your printer drivers. I have also moved this discussion over to the InDesign forum as the Users in this forum likely have additional suggestions.

Indesign CS6 Custom Dictionary

I'm a copywriter, and I use Dynamic Spelling in Indesign CS6. I work in an industry that uses a huge amount of unconventional spellings. I cannot find a dictionary setting that checks spelling using my custom dictionary when each page is opened; but when I add a new word to the dictionary, it checks the whole page. The simplest workaround I have devised is to add a nonsense word starting with a zero to the dictionary for each page; when I do this, the whole page gets checked. I remove the nonsense words from my dictionary (where they appear at the beginning, because of the initial zero) on a monthly basis. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Yes. I had tried adding it via Preferences > Dictionary, but the same problem occurs (InDesign quits).
And there is no other formatting or characters in the txt file. It purely contains words separated by a hard return.

InDesign CS6 crashes during PDF export

I have been attempting to export a magazine design to PDF using the dialogue in InDesign CS6 (for Mac). The PDF gets to around 90% in the background tasks panel and crashes every time. I have removed preferences, reinstalled InDesign, upgraded to Suitcase Fusion 4 and am still having problems. I have even tried printing as a .ps file and it crashes during that as well. A few weeks ago I had a similar problem but found that I was opening CS5 .indd files and not resaving them as CS6 .indd files before exporting. Once I resaved/renamed them in CS6 it appeared to fix the problem. Now I can't seem to fix this one. I have exported other files and it works fine. I even packaged the .idml file and a colleague of mine opened it up in CS5.5 and was able to export it. I thought it might have something to do with corrupt fonts but I disabled all fonts and still couldn't get it to export. Any help or advice would be much appreciated as I am on a deadline. Highlight text using conditional text

Hi,
I need to highlight text using conditional text in InDesign. I can highlight text using the below code.

Trying to update Indesign CS6 for DPS

Want to use DPS with my InDesign CS6 and Cloud membership. Am told I need an update by my Folio Builder but Updater tells me that there isn't an update to have. Want to start to use Single Editions. Any help available? I'm in the UK if that helps.

Remembered that when I had trouble downloading Acrobat Pro a month ago, you downloaded it and it wasn't there and you couldn't download it again for some reason. Forum help suggested that I alter the media_pb files in the caps folder which allowed me to download Acrobat again from the Cloud. Of course I forgot to change those files back to the original so the installer didn't recognise me or some such. Just changed back to original media_pb files and the installer was successful. Panic over I think. Thanks for your wisdom...
