Using Overwrite, snapped PC files from Vegas are 1 frame off in timeline!

Perhaps someone here can offer some help...
I was given a 30 minute piece of video that someone else created and started in Sony Vegas on PC. I have to finish the project in FCP. I personally did the final Audio soundtrack myself in Pro Tools. I am syncing that with this video, that had a "rough" early version of the same audio.
The person who gave me the files delivered them in AVI format. As many editing programs do, Vegas apparently split the 30 minutes of video/audio (around 6 gig of DV-NTSC 29.97 video) into multiple 1 gig pieces. So I have 6 (1gig) .avi clips that should snap back together frame accurate to get the 30 minutes back in the timeline in FCP.
So, I setup a standard DV-NTSC FCP project and I imported my audio first, so I could verify time cues, etc.
I import the AVI files, then Snap them in the timeline front to previous end, carefully, using Overwrite.
However, all of the video files are exactly 1 frame off at the end of each clip. As if either the Vegas splitting chopped off a frame at the end while splitting, or FCP is losing a frame as I import and then snap it in the time line. I can determine that it is exactly 1 frame, because of my "final", non-split audio track that is sync'd just underneath it. At the timeline area where each new clip gets snapped in, I can zoom way in and determine that the rough audio from the video track, is off by a frame with my final audio track.
It's not a drift problem, because if I line up each single clip on it's own with my audio, it stays perfectly in sync until the final frame. Then it's 1 frame short.
So by the time I snap in 6 clips, my video is exactly 6 frames off at the ending with my audio track (which I know is correct).
Sorry for being a bit lengthy, but it is hard to explain otherwise...
Is there something I am overlooking? Shouldn't FCP handle the AVI files okay? The person who gave the files to me from Vegas states that they should be frame accurate regardless of the split.
I am going to try them in another program to see what I discover, but I am stumped right now in Final Cut Pro? (That is assuming the Vegas splits were correct? Maybe that is the culprit?)
Thanks for any thoughts!
Wade

Thanks David...
I was able to finally conducted a test. I went to a friends studio that runs Premiere Pro 2.0. I checked the files there and the split AVI files do line up frame accurate perfectly and there were no frames cut off. (No surprise as it's PC files used in a PC format
Also, I first mentioned that I thought it was the end of the file that was missing a frame. It actually looks to be the opposite. It's at the front of the file that is off and missing 1 frame.
So, shouldn't I be able to use the AVI files in FCP frame accurate? Is there some dummy setting I am missing? Lastly, since AVI files are not the best format to use in FCP, can anyone recommend a conversion method for me to use for these files in FCP?
Thanks again!
Wade

  • How can I use JAVA to copya file from a location to another location?

    Hello all,
    I am planning to design a web page (let say an HTML has a form that post fields to a jsp page) that allow me to select a file and then copy it to another location like what we see in email attachement.
    Is the any related java class that i can use for this matter or ready JavaBean?
    Thanks in advance

    look for package named com.jspsmart.upload.
    Very easy to use to pull a file from a person's pc up to where the form is posted to. You will need to setup your form to type to be multi-part form. Use an input type of file to generate the file browse button.

  • Using scp to copy files from remote server to mac from a newbie

    Hi am a new poster to this forum and getting (re)acquainted with the unix world using terminal on the Mac. I am part of webteam for a large website run by a nonprofit where I have administrative access. I hope that this forum is the correct venue for my question.
    The other day I used terminal tsch to logg onto a remote server where I have admin privaleges. One of the other admins and I were in the process of experimenting with using either rsync or scp to "backup" the server. We are experimenting with different backup strategies over and above those supplied by our web host. After finding out how to open port 22 on my modem and setting services in sharing to allow for remote log on, I logged on to the remote server and ran this command (suggested by another admin):
    scp -r -p -v /remotefolder [email protected]:/Users/drktyler/Documents/serverBU/
    Unfortunately I had severely underestimated the amount of time it would take to perform scp and needed to terminate the scp job. For example, I only got 100 MB onto my Mac in one hour (normally takes about 6 mintues to download a 100 MB file from the internet) I tried to kill the job by doing:
    ctrl -z
    ls ps
    kill (scp pid #)
    This did not work. And I forgot about trying ctrl-c <blush>
    I was able to exit my session on the remote server which "exited" the scp job.
    Oh, before running scp, I did try rsync and it did not work. Unfortunately, I had not set my terminal session to an unlimited buffer size, so the early part of my session rolled off the terminal screen. This means I have no idea what the error was.
    This morning the other admin was performing some backups on the remote server and noticed that there was a an unexplained directory on the remote server named:
    mymacuserid
    It had what he called some rpms. I am not exactly sure what a rpms cache files are, but I think that rpms has some relatationship to the RPM package manager used by many linux systems. I could not account for how the mymacuserid directory got on the remote server because I did not put it there and my log in id to the remote server bears no resemblance to my Mac user id.
    We don't believe that this directory did any harm to the remote server, but I sure as heck would like to know how it got there.
    My question is if there was something about my scp command that
    (1) created this "temporary" mymacuserid directory on the remote server
    (2) did the way I ended the scp job by exiting the terminal mean that this temporary directory was not "cleaned up."?
    (3) what other options might have been available to me to kill the job and clean up after the job? ctrl-c while logged onto the remote server? opening up a second terminal window and killing the ssh job?
    (4) is scp normally that slow?
    My Mac: Mac Mini, 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo, Memory: 1.5 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, Mac OS 10.4.8
    Remote server: CPU AuthenticAMD, AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2600+
    Version psa v8.1.1_build81070716.12 os_CentOS 4.2
    OS Linux 2.6.9-55.0.2.EL {CentOS is built from Red Hat Enterprise Linux}
    Respectfully yours,
    treehugger from nj

    J.V. Thanks so much for your very helpful response!
    The other admin who was trying scp over the weekend also reported that the job ran very slowly, so I suspect the slow response time may be on the remote server end. I do appreciate knowing that you have gotten 80% of your advertised DSL speed with scp.
    Thank-you for being so polite and gentle in your response. No I did not know that if the remote patname has white space in it, that I need to quote the whole path and escape any white space with preceding backslashes as you showed in your rsync example.
    Finally, as for the rogue elements being left on the server, I figured out that these rogue elements were left on the server the day before I did the aborted scp job because I had to quit the terminal in the middle of an active rsync job while logged onto the remote terminal. When I went onto the server this morning, I checked the timestamps on the rogue files and the timestamps match up.
    The other admin has finally succeeded in doing a full server back-up (in addition to the back-up using the back-up utility provided by our web host). So, for the moment we are in pretty good shape. Of course, I'm not sure that I could replicate what he did. <shrug>
    Thanks again. I'm glad I posted on this forum as I have always learned a lot by reading the apple forums I suspect that I will be posting again.
    T.H.
    P.S. Please forgive me for not including copies of your original message in my reply. There is probably a setting that I need to change.

  • Files from LR are not returned when saved, why?

    Hi, export files from Lightroom 5.3 CC to Photoshop CC, edit them and hit control /s but they don't return to Lightroom. They are saved in the catalogue.  Adobe agent suggested my error was to convert all my Raws to DNG, but this is common and it is Adobe's own format. Also said use synchronise folder command, but this also returns deleted pics and is not the way things are supposed to work.
    I have re-installed both programmes.
    Fault only found with raw files, JPEG is fine. Also round tripping to Elements with raw files is OK. Agent gave up after more than an hour tinkering with my computer and promised to "escalate my report" saying I would be called back. Week later still waiting.
    Fault might have been caused by last update as was working before.
    Don't think I will be renewing CC contract. Anyone else out there?

    Hi, step one: yes using edit in command to send file to Photoshop. Step two: edit it in Photoshop. Step three: used save command in menus or press Ctrl. S, (this is supposed to send the file back to Lightroom where the main action is, and does so with JPEG but not DNG files). What happens is they disappear from the work flow. They are saved to the catalogue on the external hard drive where they have to be re-imported to Lightroom (Adobe agent confirmed this not supposed to happen and I am doing the right thing. He suggests using syncronize folder command, but this is not just an extra step, it also brings back all the other files that have been deleted from Lightroom.)
    Something that used to work smoothly and as designed, is not, and the agent seemed to have given up after one and a half hours in control of my computer.
    Someone else has the same problem, hence the post. Thanks for your attention.

  • What path to use to access network files from Java app running on Mac

    I have a Java app running on a Mac with OS X that I'm using to check for files that exists on Windows servers within our network.
    Using a path like /Volumes/<Share>/ works because I've already connected to the drive using Finder. If I try to use a fully qualify the path with "smb://<Server>/<Share>" then my app doesn't see anything. Is there any way that I can get Java to connect to a directory without first having mapped or made the connection via some external tool like Finder?
    Here's the code I'm testing with:
    package FileImports;
    import java.io.File;
    import java.util.Arrays;
    public class Dir {
    static int indentLevel = -1;
    static void listPath(File path) {
    File files[];
    indentLevel++;
    files = path.listFiles();
    if (!(files == null)){
    Arrays.sort(files);
    for (int i = 0, n = files.length; i < n; i++) {
    for (int indent = 0; indent < indentLevel; indent++) {
    System.out.print(" ");
    System.out.println(files.toString());
    if (files[i].isDirectory()) {
    listPath(files[i]);
    indentLevel--;
    } else System.out.println("Directory not accessible!");
    public static void main(String args[]) {
    // this path works where <share> = the directory where my files exist.
    listPath(new File("/Volumes/<share>"));
    // this path returns a null result in files
    // listPath(new File("smb://<Server>/<Share>/"));
    Thanks,
    Alex

    Thanks for the response. I'll have to dig a little deeper into JCIFS. It looks like it would work great windows to windows. I haven't been able to find in the documentation where it would work on OS X without having to mount the targeted file system first. Has anyone had success creating a connection to a windows file system from OS X with JCIFS?Since jCIFS is written in pure Java and implements the entire SMB/CIFS protocoll on it's own it doesn't require any support from the OS (apart from a normal JVM runnig). Thus it should work exactly the same in OS X and Windows (and Linux and Solaris and ...).

  • Using robocopy to copy files from a network share over a WinRS command line session

    Hello,
    Preface: Using server 2008 enterprise.
    I can't seem to get robocopy to function over WinRS and I'm not sure where the problem actually lies.  Running robocopy locally on the computer does work fine, but as soon as I try to run it through a remote command prompt through the WinRS client or directly with the WinRS client I get an access denied message (error 5).
    I've tried using runas while logged into the remote command prompt as well, thinking that it could have been some sort of permissions inheritence issue.
    I've checked the permissions on the remote file share, I've even given 'Everyone', 'Anonymous Logon' and the computer's active directory account full control over the folder and the file I'm trying to copy, but still get the access denied error.
    I've tried using /COPY:DT since I read that usually resolved error 5 issues.
    None of these things have worked.
    I'm kind of out of ideas, I've read some blogs of people who have written powershell scripts which use winrm/robocopy so I figure I'm missing something stupid.  Or maybe I've stumbled upon a bug?

    Yep, I verified permissions on them all :(
    To maybe complicate the issue, I looked at the environment variables for myself while logged in locally to the computer and through WinRS and they look to be the same.
    EDIT: Out of pure frustration I wrote a quick console application which impersonates the currently logged in user and copies a file from the network share I'm trying to access to the local computer.  The application properly impersonates the user - but does not copy the files while it's run through WinRM.  When you run the application as a locally logged in user it works just fine.
    WinRM must be behaving goofy :(

    When I import the VOB files from a DVD, they are automatically cropped to 540x480, which strangely is 9:8 aspect ratio, instead of maintaining native full raster of 720x480. Inside of Windows Media Player, Quicktime, Streamclip, and DVD-Lab Pro, the DVD's VOB files open with the correct aspect ratio, and the resolution is indicated to be 720x480.

    The answer is to move to Pro Tools Adobe is not concerned with you anymore. They are only concerned with their profits.

    Hi,
    I'd suggest you to use PNG format to save the images of your intensity graphs. You get sharper images than JPEG format.
    I made some modification to your program to save PNG files, anyway you can try to save in JPEG and see the difference.

  • Using archivelog and control file from other Oracle server

    I am still bothered with my backup process.
    I have 2 AIX boxes (same model, say A and B); both have BAAN 5 and Oracle 10g R2 on. Right now my colleague insists to use the export pump (cold backup) from Prod Oracle server (A) to restore the Oracle server on Box B. The Prod server has the archivelog mode turn on. But it will miss any transaction data from import pump till the crash point of Box A. So this is my confusion.
    Can I pass the control files and archivelog files form Box A (prod server) to Box B and use them to restore the Box B as the latest Prod server? How?
    I tried to convince them to use the RMAN backup? But not successful?
    I think the best way is probably to use the Oracle Data guard. However, there is always one concern to my manager and colleague, that such process will cause the data on the restored server (failover, Box B) not recognizable by the BAAN, which define the objects (tables).
    Thanks

    Performing a logical backup is not useful to restore to the point of failure. The only valid and available option is a hot backup/archivelog mode. Your recovery manager backup perform a controlfile and redologfile backup, so those can be restored at the destination. You must take care of the way you perform the backup, and ensure the paths where your backup is being deposited are visible by the second node. A shared storage with same mount points is suitable in this case. A tape robot configured at both nodes is also a suitable solution.
    Recovery manager perfoms a controlfile and spfile restore, too. This rman command perform the action:
    SET DBID <DBID of the database,for which you want to restore the controlfile>;
    RESTORE CONTROLFILE FROM <name_of_backupiece_which_contains_the_controlfile backup>';
    I don't see any problem on the recovery manager side, and technically speaking, on the Oracle side it is perfectly possible to restore your database at a remote location. I don't know what happens on the BAAN side, if you are required to have it configured to be operative on the target node. You could try to clone your database at the node B, configure BAAN and prepare the proceduere in case of failure.
    Configuring a dataguard is also a recomended action. So it is to think about Cold Failed Over clusters. I have recently performed a CFC configuration with BAAN. No problem it works smoothly.

  • Problem using CLIENT_HOST to FTP files from forms 10g

    Hi,
    I'm trying to use forms 10g ODS & webutil on NT to allow a user to select a file on their machine or the network and transfer the file to a DB server. I want to transfer the file to the file system on the server NOT to a BLOB column on a table. I've used webutil (client_get_file_name) to display the dialog box and allow the user to select a file. This works fine. However, when I try to use CLIENT_HOST to FTP the selected
    to the remote server it fails. I'm issuing the following
    command from within forms:
    CLIENT_HOST('CMD /C ftp -n -s:C:\test_ftp.txt');
    Something tries to kick off and a grey area the size of a dos window flashes on to the screen for a couple of seconds but the FTP does not happen. The test_ftp.txt script is a simple ftp script that transfers one file and I know it works as I can run it successfully from DOS or NT command prompt.
    Questions:
    (1) Does anyone know how to pause the DOS window so you
    can see what is actually happening ?
    (2) Has anyone implemented FTP functionality
    successfully using CLIENT_HOST in the same way that's
    I'm trying ?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Declan.

    Okay...
    Try this. For testing put your command in a .bat-file. In this .bat-file spool the output to a text-file. I'm not sure about the spooling syntax under Windows, check the Windows documentation for that. Like:
    ftp.bat
    start spooling to ftp.out
    cmd /c .... (your ftp commando line)
    stop spooling
    Perhaps the problem is that it doesn't find the ftp commando? Try hardcode the path like c:\windows\ftp ... etc!

  • Can Time Machine Be Used to Back Up Files from An External Hard Drive?

    Please let me provide a little more information to clarify the question.
    The hard drive on my computer is not large enough for all my photo and video files so I am planning to purchase a new external hard drive and move my "Pictures" and "Movies" folders to the new external hard drive as a way of freeing up space on my computer. A different external hard drive is now used for backup of the computer's hard drive.
    My question is about how backups will be handled if I upgrade to Snow Leopard.
    I understand that Time Machine will take the place of the software now being used to back up the MacHD, but back up is still needed for the photo and video files which would be moved off of the MacHD. Will Time Machine back up those files too? That is, will Time Machine back up specified folders which are being stored on one external hard drive and place the backups on a different external hard drive? And, will Time Machine do that in addition to backing up the MacHD? If so, are separate partitions needed for the MacHD and the Photo/Video backups, or will Time Machine put everything in the same partition?
