Using Pacifist to clean up IDVD

Hello,
Is anyone familiar with "Pacifist" and how I can use it to help put the missing files back to idvd and some of the other iLife '08 applications which have been giving me issue since I archived & installed Leopard? I purchased it and want to use it for ilife '08. I have ilife '08 installed now, but I want to clean it up since I think there are some parts missing - I don't even show an ilife '08 folder in my applications, the way I do say for iwork '08 (although, maybe there isn't one - could be all separate?) I haven't dowloaded any of my own projects on any part of ilife '08 - blank iphoto library, blank itunes etc. so I hope it won't be too complicated to get everything in place before I start putting my stuff back. I really appreciate any tips and advice. Thank you so much.

Apple suggests a reinstall of iLife'08 after an archive and install of Leopard if you have problems. I don't recommend you try to fix things"picemeal" with Pacifist.
See iLife '08: Reinstall iLife after performing an archive install at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306407

How to remove preinstalled files of adobe photoshop from my mac mini so that i can install a new version of the same software. The previous version was removed using the app cleaner software.Could not continue installation of the new version because of the existance of files from the previous version.plz help

What "app cleaner software" ? I ask because installing Photoshop over a previous version has never been a problem. Perhaps your difficulty stems from another source, eg. "cleaner software" ?
If you look in your hard drive, at the root level there is a Library. In there is a folder called Application Support, and in that you will find a folder called Adobe. Files from your previous version are there.
However, I urge you to call Adobe support to make sure you are not doing anything that would mess up other Adobe applications.

How can I download itunes when I get the following errors  ..ituneshelper did not install correctly error 7..I .have installed and uninstalled a dozen times with various fixes...b noir for example and used Revo to clean up.
This has been a problem for 6 weeks now, I retry when I have time and patience and use my other laptop which is also Windows 7 and runs with no problem.
Every attempt fails when all seems fine on the desktop and I try to log on to Itunes I get the errors.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features(Later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (If this won't uninstall press on)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
See also HT1925: Removing and Reinstalling iTunes for Windows XP or HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
Should you get the error iTunes.exe - Entry Point Not Found after the above reinstall then copy QTMovieWin.dll from:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
    and paste into:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes
The above paths would be for a 64-bit machine. Hopefully the same fix with the " (x86)" omitted would work on 32-bit systems with the same error.

  • Using Pacifist and OSX 10.6.4 Combo updater to restore old CUPS file

I am planning to update to 10.6.5, but am anticipating printing problems with Adobe programs (after reading posts on this discussion board and at MacFixit). I have heard one solution (after updating to 10.6.5) is to replace the new pstops filter in the CUPS system with the old one in 10.6.4 by using Pacifist to extract the old filter from the 10.6.4 Combo updater. When you go to the Combo updater page, there seem to be 2 ways to download it, one from the main page, but then there is another page where it offers to download a different kind of package for use with multiple installations, etc.. Which one should I download? I just want to have the installer package sitting on my desktop so I can extract the pstops filter from it; I don't want it to go ahead on its own and reinstall 10.6.4. Also does anyone have any other advice on using Pacifist to extract the pstops filter? Thank you.

Thanks, Kappy. I did upgrade to 10.6.5 and decided to go ahead and extract the CUPS file from the 10.6.4 updater using Pacifist. The file was indeed in the 10.6.4 combo updater, which I had no trouble downloading (with your reassurance), although it took quite a while to download. I actually used instructions given by MacFixit (which had alerted me to the printing problem in the first place) to do the extraction. All now seems to be working fine with printing in 10.6.5.

  • Can anyone tell me how to install logic 8 on lion using pacifist step by step in simple terms please

can anyone tell me how to install logic 8 on lion using pacifist step PLEASE

Both psd and tiff are the two formats to use for your master file. Saving as a jpg will flatten the layers and remove any trace of transparency. Tiff has an option in the save as dialog box to compress the file.
If you find it necessary you could zip older files for archiving.
Once the raw file has been opened in photoshop, it is no longer considered a raw file, as photoshop has no way to save to that file. Which is why you need to save as a psd or tiff.
That said, camera raw dialog box and Lightroom will save its edits to a sidecar file, which is why they are considered to be non-destructive. Since you can delete the side care file and start again. It is the combination. Of the raw file and the side car file that ends up in photoshop. Which is one reason why it is recommended to do as much as you can in camera raw or Lightroom first. But the latest version of photoshop allows your photoshop filets be loaded into camera raw as a filter. So that recommendation is not as important as it once was.

how to install logic 8 on lion using pacifist for dummies Please

    Hi,
You don't need to uninstall it, but you can drag the old application to the trash when you're sure you're through with it.
I hope you have the full Logic 8 - if you have bought the upgrade from 7 to 8 you would still need the XS key to install it.

  • Crash/lock when use special symbol palette in iDVD 6

I tried to use the special symbol palette to try to insert special language characters in the comments on a picture in a slide show. On choosing special symbols from the menu line (Edit) all seemed to be fine until I tried to choose another category of symbol from the palette.
At that point the symbol palette goes blank or only part of the information is visible and I can not close or move it. Often iDVD also locks and I have to force the application to quit.
After that, the blank symbol palette keeps popping open (then closing) when working with other applications. Cold restarts do not cure the problem. Only solution I have found to stop the annoying pop up of the palette is to delete the file in user preference (com.apple.CharPaletteServer.plist)
I try to do the same operation again with the same results. Do not know if this is a new problem or long standing since I had never used the palette before with iDVD. I can clear the created problem with the hanging palette, but the palette is esentially unusable. Character palette seems to be ok when using it from the international keyboard menu.
(The reason to try to use the palette was I could not paste names in a language that do not use Mac's standard diacriticals. Why is there no font menu choice or ability to paste a name from another application that has font menus?)

Wow-totally missed that-sorry. I guess i assumed that you didn't do that because that is about the only thing that I know of to fix it.
I guess you could try Validating fonts

I'm out of ideas...but, I am certain that others will show up that have other ideas though.

  • I somehow lost i-sight, how do I use Pacifist to recover it?

What is the procedure to recover i-sight using Pacifist?  Is this the best way?  Thank you

As repeated, iSight is the camera, iChat or PhotoBooth are Apple's software that takes advantage of those.
You might have a problem in OS X, which if your running 10.6, you have the option of re-installing 10.6 over your 10.6.x with the 10.6 install disks.
Simply stick it in and reboot holding the c key down and select your boot drive and install, reboot holding the Shift key down, log in and immediatly Software Update to 10.6.8 and reboot.
Some third party software might not function as their kext files were kicked out of OS X, so reinstall from fresh sources.
Just so happens when you do this, you also replace OS X, iChat and PhotoBooth at the same time, so it should cure all your potential ills in one shot.
I think with iChat and I know with PhotoBooth it has to resinstalled with a new OS X, something to do with special rights to access the camera, there was a pretty nasty home/school spy scandle in Phillidelpia a few years back.
(You can also do this with 10.7, command r boot on a fast internet connection and re-install Lion from Apple's servers.)
As always backup your data off the machine before proceeding.

  • SOLUTION: Are you having problems with using HDV, FCP X and iDVD?

If you edit HDV (TAPE) in FCP X and want to burn the video in iDVD you will find the following problem  .  .  .  iDVD squashes the image as shown in the screenshot below.
Whether you export as ProRes or H.264, iDVD will see it like this as a squashed image.
This is because iDVD does not recognise HDV anamorphic images unless they are in the Apple Intermediate Codec.
There are 2 solutions to this problem:-
    1. Create a ProRes 422 Custom Compressor Preset with a frame size of 1920 x 1080.
The only downside to this is that the conversion process in my 2008 iMac takes about 5 times realtime.
    2. Create an Apple Intermediate Codec preset for HDV.  This encodes on my iMac in around realtime, so it is at least 4 times faster than the ProRes solution.
Unfortunately, if you have Compressor 4 you cannot create Apple Intermediate Codec presets, but Compressor 3.5 will and what is more important, that preset can be installed in Compressor 4.
So you can export your HDV project from FCP X using Compressor Presets in either ProRes or AIC and use the resulting file in iDVD to get a correctly proportioned image like this.
I prefer to use the AIC preset as it is 4 times faster and there is no quality difference on the final DVD.
What do you do if you haven't got Compressor?
Well you can email me for a 12KB copy of the preset as I believe FCP X can use it even though you don't have Compressor.

    Ian,
    Thanks for the tip!

  • How to reinstall photobooth by using Pacifist?

I lost my photobooth and want to reinstall by using pacifist. But I can't find any files related to photobooth. So how do I need to do to reinstall photobooth?

How to Use Pacifist to Replace Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
    B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.

    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.

0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.

    9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
    10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
    11. Type in your password, click “OK”

    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes.....
    • Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
    Stop
    Leave original alone
    Update ..... Default selection
Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages

  • Reinstall bluetooth using pacifist

can anyone advise on how to reinstall BT using pacifist + install disk?
regular system profiler shows BT "No information found"
but when I boot from OSX install disk it shows up just fine in system profile.
hence I'd like to reinstall the BT alone.
I've got pacifist but it shows a bewildering array of files for BT - I don't know where to begin...
    thanks

    Barry and RonL,
thanks both for your suggestions. I had already been through PRAM zap and preference farming per suggestions on another thread re. bluetooth decay.
Further to above, threads suggested limited reinstall using pacifist - and while that may work for some sections of the OS, bluetooth seems to sprawl through many different areas of the disk making it far from straightforward.
So, rather than cause more damage and headaches, I did a full reinstall and archive a few days ago. Pita for apps, but Bluetooth came back smiling, as expected.
One piece of advice to others in similar predicament: don't assume it's a hardware problem if/when BT disappears. System profiler can be a useful tool in this situation on several levels.

  • Trying to use pacifist to reinstall mail and textedit

I am trying to use pacifist to reinstall my mail application and textedit, however I can't seem to find either application when I search for it on my disks using pacifist. All I come up with is mail.applescript which doesn't seem like an application to me. Am I looking for the wrong thing, can someone tell me where to find these to applications so I can install them. Obviously I am not good with computers so step by step would very helpful.

It may be easier to insert the Installer DVD and open the Optional Installs folder then double-click on the Optional Installs. mpkg file. You can then locate Mail in the Applications section. Check the box then click on the Install button.
TextEdit can be found on the Installer DVD here: /System/Library/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg. Open the Essentials.pkg file with Pacifist and find TextEdit in the Applications folder. Select TextEdit then click on the Install button in Pacifist's toolbar (far left icon.)
To go directly to the folder select Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste in the following: /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/.

  • Using Pacifist - doesnt see any files on ASR disk #2

Im trying to reinstall Garageband 3 onto a MBP CD system. I have both ASR disks that came with the purchase of that Mac. Like vinyl records from antiquity, these disks are scratched and the Superdrive isnt being so super anymore.
The installation halts around the 55-67% area and always errors out. You can hear the Superdrive cycling back and forth, servo motor winding up with each new attempt.
To recover from this problem Ive got two lines of attack:
    a. read from .dmg I created (so long ago) of each disk. Dont have that .dmg file handy, wouldnt you just know it.
    b. try to use Pacifist to read the package which installs the whole Garageband enchilada. I believe the actual app is installed, but it tells me it cant find a valid instrument library.
I would prefer to attempt to use Pacifist but it sees nothing on the ASR disk (white text on grey background). I also tried using Toilminal to ls and cd around and it doesnt allow this either.
Anybody with an idea how to read the package contents of ASR disks ?
    Cheers TIA

Found it. I Relaunched Finder, and problem solved. Doesn't make sense, but it worked this time.

  • Using Pacifist to solve media problem..please help

I captured a lot of footage and ended up with many files with the extension -av. Now I know that that is bad, but at the time of capture I had no idea. I have been working for months with these files. I just opened my project and they are now all offline. The files are in my drive, but they won't open in quicktime or reconnect through fcp. The only thing I did before opening my project file was install software updates. People are mentioning major problems with Quicktime 7.4.1 and recommend that I downgrade using Pacifist.
Does it sound like the downgrade will solve the problem?
Has anyone ever had other unforeseen problems after using Pacifist?
    Thanks.

Check to see how that drive the media is capture to is properly formatted as "Mac OS Extended." It sounds as if it may be formatted as "FAT32."
