Using PackageKit in Arch

Hi I was interested in using PackageKit on Arch for notification of updates and would like to know if anyone else uses this feature?
I found this topic https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=118936, but it is very old and I believe that nobody else monitor it. I know many will say that this is not legal, it is best to use the terminal, etc.. I know that and do not disagree, the fact of using PackageKit is just by way of curiosity. It works well for installation, removal, verification of updates, but the automatic notification service that does not work, and the key to the topic indicated, no longer exists in gnome 3.
Thanks

I apologize if the location for this post is not ideal, I did in this area for two reasons.
1st. Follow the same as the original that even posted the link.
2nd. If someone is doing a search, you can drop this topic and see each other.
If it is better to move it to another location, ask the moderator to make this change we'll be very grateful.

• Keep getting "finder quit unexpectedly while using PackageKit Plug-In" intermittently after install of 10.9.2 Mavericks, what should i do?

When i restart, reboot, power down or power up i keep getting (intermittently) an error window pop up saying - "finder quit unexpectedly while using PackageKit Plug-In" - this has only been occuring since after install of 10.9.2 Mavericks. Also powering down or restarting in anyway now takes much longer than normal despite not having any 3rd party apps scheduled to open at startup! - note i also upgraded the memory of my early (2011) 13 inch macbook pro from 4GB to 8GB, but hadnt caused any issues prior to install of Mavericks 10.9.2.
What should i do, can anyone help with a fix other than suggesting i take it into an apple store (as i'm out of warranty) or without having to do a software re-install from the recovery discs? Thanks.

Hello vajrabairava,
This may be the result of a damaged system component. I would recommend reinstalling Mavericks in order to replace any damaged components. This should not affect any data on the system, but I do strongly suggest ensuring that you have a good backup in place prior to reinstalling Mavericks.

• How to use xvkbd in Arch + ratpoison

if I run xvkbd in terminal or exec xvkbd, xvkbd graphic keyboard appear full screen.
It doesn't pop up when an application which concern with text typing, Eg. leafpad or even terminal open.
How to use xvkbd graphic keyboard in Arch+ratpoison?
Edit 2014-01-24 : No one reply to this thread. I think I need to edit it.
Actually, I have Arch + ratpoison installed on Asus EeePC 900.
It has only 1GB CPU and 1GB Ram and its keyboard is not working well.
I mean some key doesn't print any character at all.
but its trackpad (mousepad) is working perfectly.
So, I need a on-screen keyboard working well to avoid those keys not working.
Please anybody help !

Try the following:
const char *nameVal = "русский";
XmlData data((void *)nameVal, strlen(nameVal));
XmlQueryContext qc = mgr.createQueryContext();
XmlValue nodeName(XmlValue::STRING, data);
qc.setVariableValue("name", nodeName);Lauren Foutz

Oh yeah, running Arch 64 which had everything updated just a few days ago.
EDIT: Ok, I found a patch used when debian compiles the package to update it for gcc 4.3  it compiles but the errors are still there, the process just doesn't error out.

• Packagekit for Arch project ?

Hello,
I'm new to Arch and was looking for that old thread : http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=36575 about creating a packagekit mookup for Archlinux
I posted some proposal but some moderator asked me to create a new thread for this.
I said :
I'm new to ArchLinux and I find this idea great, also let me present me :
I'm a french IT student and I've some projects to validate and the end of my studies. These projects may be personnal or with any enterprise or community.
If you agree, I could contribute to that kind of application. I don't really know how does packagekit works, but if someone does, we could work together. I know well C(++) and common tools ([auto]make, cmake, etc.), particularly Qt and KDE frameworks (KPackagekit ?).
Thus I could present this work as a project supervised by someone from the Arch community.
If my keyboard may help you, leave me a PM

IIRC,    Valeriy Lyasotskiy (onestep_ua)  is responsible for alpm backend, so you can mail him (see git logs).

• Dd, gzip using split under Arch and FreeBSD ?

Hello Archers,
Not sure where to post this question so I'll try here.  Would anyone know the FACTS why the command below runs super fast under Arch-2009.08 and Fedora-12 but runs very slow under FreeBSD 8.1?
Notice; I did not not specify a block size for neither OS, so according to the DD documentation it is reading/write 512 blocks at a time from an unbuffered device and as you see ARCH runs like a bat-out-of-hell, regardless.
The only thing I figure is ,,, ARCH-LINUX must be bumping up the default size with-out the user knowledge when no size has been specified by user.  Would this be true?
I notices this tooooo many times in the pass but this time I documented it for proof because I thought it was my imagination most of the time.  I use all three OS by dual-booting when needed, and I use the same code below so they can backup each other when I make configuration changes in either OS.   Machine don't matter... old or new, P3 512MB RAM or Phenom-II-965-QUAD - 8GB RAM, same results.
Same Command:
dd if=/dev/sda3 | gzip -c | split -b 3500m - /12/File-Name-dd-By-Arch-Linux.gz.
ARCH-2009 - 1,504,432,145,920 bytes - 150GB = 2118sec = 35min = 1/2 hour - 71 MB/s
dd if=/dev/ad4s3 | gzip -c | split -b 3500m - /12/File-Name-dd-By-FreeBSD.gz.
FBSD 8.1 - 1,504,432,145,920 bytes - 150GB = 16652sec = 277min = 4 1/2hour - 9033694 b/s
293,812,785 + 0 record in
293,812,785 + 0 record out

I learn that it's a BLOCK vs CHAR thing.  Linux use BLOCKS.
I use ARCH to control all my HDD's ... Running GRUB and dd'ing to backup all partitions with Windows Vista, Windows-7, FreeBSD Packet filters and routers.  If you use the command I posted it may have an issue if you turn on top during dd'ing a large partition.  I been dd'ing with ARCH with success for over a year and will not be cash out any time soon.  I just learn what to do and what not to do until it is fix.  Don't mean to cross-websites but maybe the author would like to know.
Here's the story ...

• How to use a .dmg file in Arch Linux

I have a file a friend gave me from his Mac computer with a .dmg file name. I haven't been able to pinpoint exactly how to use this type of file... I believe its an Apple raw disk image or something like that.. sort of like an iso. I need to use this file in order to start an application and download it onto Arch Linux. The problem is that I can't figure out how to use it on Arch Linux and burn it onto a Cd. Has anyone had experience with this sort of thing? I am completely lost.

• MAME box using Arch Linux

Hi.
As explained in my introduction, I want to set up a MAME box for my arcade cabinet, and I think that Arch Linux will be the best way to achieve it, since I want a barebone system with the sole command line, the goal being that each time I fire up the system, it directly ends to the SDLMAME front end without having to go through such a thing as Gnome or KDE, and without having to use a physical keyboard at all, just the joystick control.
Also, I like the fact the system will autoupdate itself, especially since it will be connected to my network and that I will be using SSH for setting it up from my desktop computer and accessing it when needed.
So, I will use:
1. Arch Linux
2. SDLMAME
3. A front end, but I don't yet which one, maybe Wah!cade.
I would especially need help with the front end, to choose the right one for my needs, and also to know which components will be needed.
Also, if ever I would like to program my own, any guideline and suggestions are very welcomed. :-)
TIA!

qmc is a Qt based frontend for sdlmame, and aur has several packages for frontends.
If you want to write your own launcher, you'll also have to implement a way to select the games.
That basically suggests you have to design something, and probably need an IDE to develop it.
Best seems to choose a programming language you are familiar with.

• Installing Arch using larch-8 from LiveCD to HD

Hi there,
as you can see from the subject, my problem is so, so easy... but really, I can't understand how to do it. What I supposed to do? Using larchin-archin? I can't find 'larchin' on my LiveCD, neither from terminal.
For the rest, my LiveCD distro works fine, really fine... I love it, I want it on my HD I can do whatever you want, I can format the whole disk, install arch and then copy all my folders from the CD, I really don't know: I read the documentation, I read topics on this forum... sorry for the newbieness of that question
Thank you in advance

Maybe you should read more carefully and slowly
Installation to hard disk
The larch hard-disk installer larchin may be used to install Arch Linux to hard disk (or similar). ***+ Or, at least it will be possible to use it when I have updated (rewritten?) it for larch-8. -*** larchin deals with partitioning and formatting of hard drives, placing Arch Linux (primarily a copy of the live system on which it is running) on the newly formatted partitions, and installation of a bootloader.
As mentioned above the main approach to Arch installation covered by larchin is to copy the contents of the live system to a hard drive. Those (few) bits peculiar to the needs of a live system are removed and the result is a completely normal Arch Linux installation. I should perhaps mention the file 'delarch' in the 'larch/data' directory on the boot medium). This script (if it exists) is run at the end of the installation and allows custom installation actions to be performed (the main reason for its existence is to allow features of the live system to be removed, because they would be out of place in a normal installation).
'Live' installation to hard disk
This is sometimes called a 'frugal' install and means that the system as it is (compressed, running in an aufs file-system) on the USB-stick or CD is installed as a live system to a hard-drive partition. This might be useful if you want to run from a flash device, for example, as it minimizes write operations to the device (normal access is read only). This is actually no different from copying a larch system to a USB-stick, so the normal copying procedure can be used.
You should see the config inside your profiles, also the overlay options before you can do an install to HDD.

• REFInd using initramfs-arch-fallback.img

I am not exactly sure how initramfs-arch.img differs from the fallback image but when booting from rEFInd the kernel parameters always use initrd=\EFI\arch\initramfs-arch-fallback.img.
UEFISYS partition is mounted at /boot/efi and contains \EFI\arch\{vmlinuz-arch,initramfs-arch.img,initramfs-arch-fallback.img,linux.conf,refind_linux.conf}
\EFI\arch\linux.conf
root=/dev/disk/by-label/root ro rootfstype=ext4 add_efi_memmap initrd=\EFI\arch\initramfs-arch.img
\EFI\arch\refind_linux.conf
"Boot to Terminal" "root=PARTUUID=3b62f380-9d11-41d2-b3ee-b0720125036d ro rootfstype=ext4 add_efi_memmap systemd.unit=multi-user.target"
As I said, I don't know how they differ, when I would want to use one or the other, or if it is an issue to fallback instead of the regular ramdisk, but I am trying to figure out how to set it up to use the normal image and/or set up a menu like grub has to select which ramdisk to use at boot. Would this require using refind stanzas to add entries to the boot menu?

srs5694 wrote:
cfr wrote:I don't suppose this works if you specify the loader as well, does it? That would make it possible to specify options for the LTS kernel as well.
I'm afraid I'm not quite parsing your question. Could you re-phrase it? To what loader are you referring?
What I meant was that that means you can specify the initrd option in items listed in refind_linux.conf. Could you do the same for the loader option? Arch has 2 initrd for each kernel and 2 possible kernels. None have version numbers but it is nice to have them all in the same directory. I managed this by specifying them in refind.conf and disabling autoscanning for the arch directory but I just wondered if this would make it possible to manage that automatically.
Version 0.6.0 adds this feature. It's enabled by default, although you can disable the hints by adding the "hints" item to the "hideui" token in refind.conf. I need to refine it a bit, though; the hints for the information screen are inaccurate, for instance.
Good to know this is happening - thanks!
I just set this up. I got rather confused and screwed up the first time. In the end what I did was specify everything in refind.conf, copying config over from grub.cfg, and disabling auto-detection for the arch stub loader directory. This works although the menu entries get descriptions like "Boot Arch Linux With" which struck me as a bit odd.
The usual form for the prompts is "Boot X from Y," where X is a description or filename and Y is a filesystem label. If the filesystem label is blank, that gets left hanging. I have a fix in the work for this. It's up in rEFInd's git repository, but if you're not up for using git and compiling yourself, I've just put a test binary up here:
http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind-bin-0.6.0.2.zip
In this version, if the filesystem label is empty, rEFInd tries to find the filesystem type and size, so you get something like "Boot foo.efi from 217 GiB ext4 volume". Some of that information could get dropped, but in a worst-case scenario, it should now say "Boot foo.efi from unknown volume".
Of course, another approach is simply to give your filesystems names. You can do this with tune2fs (for ext2/3/4) or GParted; but if you're loading your kernel from your root filesystem, you may need to do this from an emergency disc. GParted's pretty conservative about modifying mounted filesystems. I just checked with a USB flash drive, and tune2fs let me do it on a mounted filesystem, but I'm not sure if that's really advisable.
Is this something different from the "name" gdisk shows for partitions? These show up correctly on my system:
$ ls /dev/disk/by-partlabel/
boot efi lvm
I guess refind doesn't pick up on labels for physical partitions? (Right now kernel is being booted from efi although I'll probably switch to boot when the ext4 driver arrives here. Obviously that means it is on a vfat partition - fat 32 now.)

• Polkit permissions for packagekit

Hello,
I have a question regarding polkit permissions. In my special case it's about packagekit, but I think it is a general problem with my understanding of this subject.
The specific problem is the following: I use packagekit with apper in KDE to update my system. By default, I can do this without having to provide any password. But I don't like this behaviour. I would prefer having to authenticate as root to update packages.
Now I understand I have to use polkit rules to change this. The arch wiki article on polkit says that it is a bad thing to change it directly in /usr/share/polkit-1/actions.
Considering that these files might be overwritten in an update of polkit and that they are impossible to read xml files, I totally understand that.
As an alternative the wiki article suggests to use .pkla files in /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d
So I tried that (I had to create the folders localauthority and 50-local.d, though) and created the file /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/org.freedesktop.packagekit.pkla
Identity=unix-group:users
Action=org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update
ResultAny=no
ResultInactive=no
ResultActive=auth_admin_keep
The way I understand polkit, this should do the trick. Unfortunately, it does not change anything. I can still update packages without a password.
Does anyone know where I did a mistake or how I can solve this problem?

What the frell? Are the developers of polkit completely out of their mind? Do they really expect users to learn Javascript?
This makes it really hard for normal users to change the rules, if they are not programmers.
Anyway, I think I managed to get it done:
polkit.addRule(function(action, subject) {
if (action.id == "org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update" &&
subject.isInGroup("users")) {
return polkit.Result.AUTH_ADMIN_KEEP;
I hope this does not do anything that might compromise the security of my system.

This is almost certainly related to another post where I was struggling to create logical partitions from Windows. Basically, Linux and Minitool Partition Wizard agreed that there were no logical partitions, but the built-in Windows disk utility said there was. I ended up using fdisk from Arch install media, and Minitool and Arch now both saw the logical partitions (Windows shows a big extended partition of free space). I installed Arch just fine, can boot to it and win7... life is good.
Not so much. A key to my setup is having an encrypted partition to share data between OS's. I used TrueCrypt with great success on my former laptop and am now having great difficulty!
Some preliminary information:
# fdisk -l /dev/sda
Disk /dev/sda: 238.5 GiB, 256060514304 bytes, 500118192 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x1e6513b3
Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sda1 * 2048 2101247 2099200 1G 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda2 2101248 172433407 170332160 81.2G 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda3 172433408 390537215 218103808 104G 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda4 390537216 500118191 109580976 52.3G 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 390539264 391587839 1048576 512M 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 391589888 500118191 108528304 51.8G 83 Linux
I also went partition by partition to check Minitool's agreement on sectors (they match perfectly with the exception that it doesn't show the extended /dev/sda4 container). I triple checked the Minitool partition info properties as you can't copy and paste from it's window, and pasted the fdisk output to minimize errors. I'm showing a column for mini/Arch for both start/stop sectors, and just subtracted them to make sure I got 0. Appears to be perfect alignment:
| part | start (mini) | start (arch) | diff | | end (mini) | end (arch) | diff |
|------+--------------+--------------+------+---+------------+------------+------|
| sda1 | 2048 | 2048 | 0 | | 2101247 | 2101247 | 0 |
| sda2 | 2101248 | 2101248 | 0 | | 172433407 | 172433407 | 0 |
| sda3 | 172433408 | 172433408 | 0 | | 390537215 | 390537215 | 0 |
| sda4 | 390539264 | 390539264 | 0 | | 391587839 | 391587839 | 0 |
| sda5 | 391589888 | 391589888 | 0 | | 500118191 | 500118191 | 0 |
- Screenshot of how Minitool sees my disk
- Screenshot of how Windows disk utility sees my disk
I used TrueCrypt 7.1a on both OS's. I created a non-system encrypted partition using the GUI on Arch with the AES cipher/sha-512 hash, with filesystem as "none." Once created I did:
$ sudo cryptesetup --type tcrypt open /dev/sda3 vault
That worked fine, which I followed with:
$ sudo mkfs.ntfs /dev/mapper/vault
It initialized the device with zero's and then gave me the success/have a nice day message. Closed the volume and rebooted. When I tried to open the device from win7, I got "Incorrect password or not a TrueCrypt volume." Hmmm. I guess I'll try in reverse. I duplicated the procedure exactly as above from win7, this time having TrueCrypt automatically format with NTFS. All succeeds and I can open the device. Reboot into Arch and I get the same message from TrueCrypt! If I try with cryptsetup, it's "No device header detected with this passphrase."
Next, I tried just doing NTFS with no encryption. From Arch:
$ sudo mkfs.ntfs /dev/sda3
All goes well and I can mount it. I boot into Windows and it's not even listed! I used Minitool to issue it a drive letter, at which point clicking that pops up a windows dialog box asking me if I want to format the disk. Format the partition with NTFS in Windows, reboot into Arch and I get:
[jwhendy@arch_zbook ~]$ sudo mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/scratch/
NTFS signature is missing.
Failed to mount '/dev/sda3': Invalid argument
The device '/dev/sda3' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS.
Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a
partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around?
Doesn't matter if I add "-t ntfs" or "-t ntfs-3g." I get the same result.
Just to add a couple more oddities... when I created the NTFS partition in Arch, I also created a file called vault.tc as a TrueCrypt file-based encrypted container. My thinking was that the issue was with TrueCrypt full-partitions and that I could get around it with a plain partition containing an encrypted file. Reboot into windows and the partition isn't shown (as stated above). From Minitool, if I right click the partition and choose "Explore," it lists the partition contents and there is my vault.tc file. Windows thinks it's unformatted!
I noticed the option to backup/restore a TrueCrypt header, and gave a shot at backing up the working TrueCrypt setup on windows to a flash drive, booting to Arch, and then restoring the /dev/sda3 header from the flash drive file. Arch still couldn't open it.
Lastly, I noticed when I go to select a device to encrypt in TrueCrypt, my logical partitions aren't showing up (just like Windows only sees the end of the disk as free space). I just can't help but think something is tweaked in the partition table... basically:
- TrueCrypt sees what Windows sees
- Arch sees what Minitool sees
How could I go about diagnosing further or fixing the issue. This is driving me crazy!
I'd hate to do this given that I already setup my wm, configs, packages, etc... but my last resort attempt would be to wipe my logical partitions and see if I can at least get the win7 disk utility, minitool, arch, and truecrypt to like each other with respect to /dev/sda1-3... and then try to re-add the logicals afterward and re-install arch? I honestly don't know why this would be any different, but was just a thought. The issues from the other post seem to arise with logical partitions not being recognized the same between win/linux.
Or figure out how to just use primaries (like dedicated boot on a USB drive or something). Or fiddle with growing/shrinking windows to see if I can undo whatever is telling windows where/what things are? Really grasping at straws here.

Hi Ramesh,
Please install the hotfix package and test the issue again:

In addition, try uncheck the option “confirm open after download” per:

• How to fix Grub after moving arch to new drive [SOLVED]

I moved my Arch install (/ and /home partitions) to a new drive and I was wondering how to fix Grub so that it knows /boot is on the new drive.  What I've done thus far is
create partitions on the new drive and dd my current / and /home partitions to them.  The new partitions are bigger than the current ones, so I also re-sized the filesystems to fill the new partitions.  My disk/partition setup is the following
/dev/sda1        2048 488392703 488390656 232.9G  7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT   (Storage)
/dev/sdb1  *         2048    206847    204800  100M  7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT   (System reserved)
/dev/sdb2          206848 102402047 102195200 48.7G  7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT   (Windows 7)
/dev/sdb3  *    102402048 141472127  39070080 18.6G 83 Linux   (Current Arch /)
/dev/sdb4       141472128 250069679 108597552 51.8G 83 Linux   (Current Arch /home)
/dev/sdc2  *       206848 105064447 104857600   50G 83 Linux   (New Arch /)
/dev/sdc3       105064448 234441647 129377200 61.7G 83 Linux   (New Arch /home)
After I resized the filesystems, I then created a new grub.cfg file (on /dev/sdb3) that is aware of the new Arch system.  I can boot to both my current and new Arch installs and run them fine, but ultimately I want to remove the current Arch install so I can make more room for my Windows 7 install.  What do I need to do to grub, so it knows to use the new Arch system.

@Xyne - Thanks!  Installing grub on my /dev/sdc did the trick.  Because I dd'ed my old setup to a new drive, /boot/grub was already populated, so all I had to do was install and configure grub on the new drive via the following.
grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck --debug /dev/sdx
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
I used os-prober to find the other OS's (Windows 7 and my old Arch).  After some testing, I will wipe my old Arch setup and then resize Windows into the free space.
