Using Pages on a mixed network
Hi -
I have about 250 networked accounts on a Snow Leopard server.
Pages and all of iWork is fine, works well. That is, until Pages 4.03 has been used on a workstation with Mountain Lion.
Thereafter, on OS 10.6.6 workstations, Pages 4.03 cannot open new or existing documents.
Also, the user's Library folder is rendered permanently invisible on all OSs.
Any ideas to help anyone?

On Lion an Mountain Lion the user Library is hidden. In Finder click on the Go men while holding down the option key and you get a Library option.
Read up on what is new in Lion and Mountain Lion. There many new features.

Problems using Time Capsule in mixed Network.
My NAS started to play up so I invested in an Apple Timecapsule as we have several Macs and the beast is supposed to support other OS's, including Linux and Windows.
Mac side words like a dream. Mr Apple's stuff generally does in my experience.
I can mount the disk in Linux (Ubuntu) but the operation is most odd. I can copy files from my Linux machine to the Time Capsule but not all types of file can be "seen" by my Mac. In particular, jpg files don't show up at the Mac end. They do show as being there to Linux.
I've not tried Windows yet, that gets minimal use here.
Has anyone mastered using a Timecapsule as a simple NAS under Linux and can offer some tips, please?
I've pretty well Googled this to death, there are conflicting versions of what are claimed to be working fstab entries (including the one I'm using) but no examples of what I am observing.
This is my fstab entry:
//<ip_address>/Data/Files /media/macnas cifs uid=brian,credentials=/home/brian/<credentials_file>,iocharset=utf8,sec=ntlm 0 0
The aim is to use the Time capsule as a back disk for my Linux machines as well as my Macs.
Any assistance greatly appreciated.

PS: Previously I was using on of my Linux systems as a Time capsule server for my Macs, that was easy to get working in comparison going the other way!What Mac OS are you running?
There can be some interesting issues with Mavericks.. it might simply have permissions wrong.
Or the files are hidden.

TC is really not suited to NAS duties. So good luck with backups on it. -

As of June 2010 I no longer maintain this FAQ. I’ve migrated to Lightroom 3, which I use for all my organizing and most of my editing (I still use the Photoshop Elements Editor for more involved editing). Question about Mac OS X Sever on a mixed network...
We're looking to upgrade our network, specifically in security, and are considering using Mac OS X Server to run the Open Directory and Network Authentication over a mixed network of mainly Windows XP machines, a few Macs running Tiger and a couple of Ubuntu Machines and File Servers.
I was wondering if anyone here had some experience with running Mac OS X Server as the Open Directory Master on a mixed network?
There are several features of OS Server that I was wondering if they work on other client OS, specifically Windows...
• Can I restrict Windows machines to not be able to burn from their optical drives?
• Can I restrict Windows machines to only be able to mount external disks as read-only?
• Can I use the printing restrictions on Windows machines?
• Can I use the password perimeters, such as length, character content, password expire and change password on first login on Windows machines?
It would be helpful to know what real-world experience people have had with this.

For printer restrictions, you can.
You might want to use the Mac OS X server for managing your clients with any OS, but to setup restrictions you could use a third party utility..

I wonder if the good and the great here would mind giving a little bit of advice.
Where is it at when it comes to NAS or shared drives on a mixed network. At home we have PCs mostly but I have just bought a new MBP which I think is fantastic.
I would like to use Time Machine to back it up and ideally do that over WiFi to a NAS or cheap server. I know that I have to use a Mac formatted drive to use Time Machine but is there any way to set this up so that PCs can use the NAS.
Alternatively is there a way to let the PCs see a folder on my MBP and back up to that and then from the MBP to a NAS.
Finally any suggestions of a suitable NAS. I want it headless and able to connect over WiFi because I want to hide it away in a loft or something to avoid being robbed.

RAs I suggested there are some NAS systems compatible with AFP shares that could work for you, but not with TM. There are many excellent backup utility options that work across networks:

Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility.

Leopard, Linux and Windows mixed networks
Oh oh so funny. I installed Leopard on my mac. I have a mixed network, with PCs, Macs and Linux machines.
I discovered that Leopard networking is a nightmare, something back like Windows 95. Is not a joke!
After installing with an upgrade from 10.4.10, all the Windows machines of my network disappeared. )-: . No way to see in the finder. But ok, using the terminal I can manage to use. But...
My real problem started when I tried to reconnect the drives from the Linux machines. The new networking act like Windows, Iit doesn't allow me to choice different passwords and usernames from each drives in the same server. Ok, I say myself "for the moment, I mount one volume, I use it, then I unmount, I mount another volume etcetera". Not so useful, but manageable. And here the second nightmare begin: Finder isn't able to disconnect my disk! I use the eject button, or the "disconnect" button and the disk remain mounted. I rebooted the machine. Same, the disk is mounted. I restarted both mac and linux machine. Same, it reconnect the drive )-: . So I'm locked to one drive of my server and I can't do nothing else.
If someone with a mixed network is experimenting the same issues, please help!

P.S. I'm really disappointed. Before making jokes (with the PCs of the network displayed with the blue screen of death icon) they must use the time to test their system... and hey, please don't display the BSOD icon when the machines connected to the network are Linux computers (-: !!!Read the hint is this blog about the Mac to Linux SAMBA fix.
Did you go to System Preferences->Sharing pane and turn on File sharing on (hit the 'Advanced' button to choose the kind of sharing protocols)?
Also do mix and matching from the articles File Sharing With OS X 10.5 - Introduction to File Sharing With Your Mac (for XP sharing) & File Sharing With Snow Leopard: Sharing OS X 10.6 Files With Windows 7 (for 10.6.x sharing). Mixing these two articles can help you share as long as you are in the same IP subnet.

I don't want to use it as a wireless network as I have the modem supplied by Optium. I want it to back up my computers.
Plug it into the main modem which must also be a router.
Put the TC in bridge mode..
Then go to the wireless page and either turn it off.. but I recommend roaming.. as the TC is much faster on the 5ghz band and backups can drag down wireless performance of the whole network.
Roaming setup thusly. ...just give the TC the same wireless name= SSID as the main router.. same security.. WPA2 AES= WPA2 Personal and the same security password.. and then the computer will simply pick the best wireless to connect to.. without creating a second wireless network.. although it is not really such an issue to do so. -
Why would I use Pages if I have to buy Endnote when Word will let me cite for free?
Since buying my first Mac, I am trying to switch to all Apple software. I have Office 365, but wanted to begin using Pages. However, the only way I have found to cite sources for my reseach papers is to purchase an Endnote program which is like $300. Why would I do that? In Word, I can create a Works Cited library and cite while I type the paper. It is included in Word. Pages is usless to me if I cannot cite sources. Am I missing something?
Word/Pages issue aside, your new MBA should NOT have difficulty connecting or staying connected to the Internet. If you have an opportunitiy, you should make a genius bar appointment if you have an Apple Retail store nearby to have them look at the MBA. If you have had the computer for less than 90 days, it still has phone support- Call applecare. If you Purchased Apple Care protection, you have phone support for 3 years. Use the resources.
I won't comment on software, but the MBA SHOULD reliably connect to a WiFi network (assuming the network isn't the issue).

What I want to use this groups to restrict the access of some users to some pages that I don’t want them to see, that’s is why I want to create these groups…
So the question will be, which one is the difference between page groups and groups of users, if there is one… as I understand page groups “groups” pages that are assigned to a cluster of pages, but do not restricts user access… and groups of users, says which user that belongs to a specific user group.
As I mentioned before I think I am mixing concepts, and what I really want to do is to restrict the access of some users (that are assigned to a group) and to let some other user group go to every page on the application.
I will appreciate if you can help me out with this.

I am changing from Word to Pages. I have created my custom template with all my styles etc and that is what comes up when I go for a New Document. Fine. How do I get it to use the same Custom Template when I use Pages to open a Word document?
The template is a document in itself, it is not applied to an existing document whether it is a Pages document or a Word document converted to a Pages document.
You would need to either copy and paste content, using existing styles, or apply the styles to the converted Word document.
You can Import the Styles from an existing document and those imported Styles can be used to override the current document's styles:
Menu > Format > Import Styles
The process is simplified if the styles use the same names, otherwise you will need to delete the style you don't want and replace it with the one that you do want when asked, then the substitution is pretty straightforward.

Haven't been able to use pages for a while. Keep getting following message. Have tried reinstalling iWork, but no luck. Same problems with Keynote and Numbers/
Have you moved Pages from its installed location? Or just dragged a copy to your current system?
It can't find some of its resources apparently.

I created a newsletter using pages on my IPAD 3. All of a sudden I can no longer open that document. When I click on it, it throws me out of pages all together. I can open other pages documents, but not that one. It is very frustrating to be able to SEE the file, but not open it.
I rebooted and I do have icloud back-up on but am not sure how to restore an older version. I also made sure there are no updates for pages. Until the IPAD I used a home PC which I still have but am trying to wean myself off of. I wish now I had used MS Publisher on my PC for the newsletter even though I hate it.
Please don't tell me I have lost my Newsletter and 20 hours worth of work.Try resetting your iPad. Hold the on/off and home buttons together for 7 or 8 seconds till the Apple logo appears.
I'm assuming your default is to save Pages documents to iCloud, and that you had a good WiFi connection when you closed Pages the last time you tried to save the document. -
I have an mac air and an iMac 5k - pages runs on both. I use pages on my air and save all my documents to iCloud drive. I can see the documents on my iMac but some won't open in pages which is bizarre? They will open if I change it to open with preview but then all I can do is read it - I can't add to the document - All I want is to be able to see all my documents on all my devices and to be able to have them sync so I can add to the documents from any of my devices. I also have an iPhone 6 and an iPadair2 but I would be happy just to have the iMac and macair sync for starters. I have folders within folders in my documents,. The folders which contain pdf's and individual files open OK . The one I am having difficulty with is the file which I use for ongoing correspondence - in other words it is quite long - I keep adding to it ( by copying letters in and letters out so I can see a sequential history of what has been going on by scrolling down ) in date order so that it could be 1 - 100 pages long - but I don't think the size is a problem. I don't understand why some folders can open and others not . Has anyone any suggestions please. I have been trying to get this to work for months since iCloud drive came in. It has got much better but it is still not good enough - or maybe it's me?
All I can suggest is that you open that file on the MBA and save it as a new file, then see if you can open the new one on the iMac.

High Virtual memory usage when using Pages 2.0.2

I was just wondering whether there had been any other reports of unusually high memory usage when using Pages 2.0.2, specifically Virtual memory. I am running iWork 06 on the Mac listed below and Pages has been running really slowly recently. I checked the Activity Monitor and Pages is using hardly any Physical memory but loads of Virtual memory (so much so that the Page outs are almost as high as the Page ins (roughly 51500 page ins / 51000 page outs).
Any known problems, solutions or comments for this problem? Thanks in advanceI don't know if this is specifically what you're seeing, but all Cocoa applications, such as Pages, have an effectively infinite Undo. If you have any document that you've been working on for a long time without closing, that could be responsible for a large amount of memory usage.
While it's good practice to save on a regular basis, if you're making large amounts of changes it's also a good idea to close and reopen your document every once in awhile, simply to clear the undo. I've heard of some people seeing sluggish behavior after working on a document for several days, which cleared up when the document was closed and reopened.

I use pages to draft forms that i repeatedly edit and use in my business. Ex: letterhead, envelopes, and legal forms. I recently drafted a legal form
for a client. saved it and then reopened and printed the next day. now when i try to open that form, ( or letterhead or envelope) i get a message that
it wont open and that i need a newer version of pages. but my pages software is up to date. Whats up with this??You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Note: Apple has removed over 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.
