Using Palm IIIc with OS 10.4.5 on Powerbook

Hi,
I just purchased a Palm IIIc on eBay but am now realizing that it may have been a mistake.
All I want to be able to do is run a couple of games (i.e. Sudoku) on it and keep my appointments organized.
I have a 15" AL Powerbook and will be using a Palm hotsync cradle with a serial to USB adapter.
Will this work ?

Hi KMoorehouse,
Well, I still have my Palm IIIx kicking around but I've never actually connected it to my PowerBook. First, you'll need something like this to change over the serial to USB. I'm not sure which version of Palm desktop software you're using (3.something or maybe 4.0). There are some known issues with version 4.0 which Palm has posted on their site here. I guess the only thing to do at this point is install the software, connect the IIIc (after you get a serial to USB adaptor) and try it out. Good luck.

  • Syncing Palm IIIc with OS 10.4 on G4 Powerbook

I am not sure which forum to post this in but here's my question:
I recently purchased a Palm IIIc on eBay for a very nominal amount as I couldn't really afford a new Tungsten E2.
What I want to know if it is even possible to sync these older palm pilots with OS 10.4 ? I am getting a cradle with it but will need the 9 pin serial to USB adapter.
I read a few articles which showed that this could work and Palm's website shows you can download software for the Palm IIc....
BUT....can anybody here tell me if it will actually work or they have successfully been able to get it to work in OS X?
    Thanks.

  • Trying to sync Palm IIIc with Powerbook

I have been trying to sync a Palm IIIc with my Powerbook which is currently running Tiger (I cannot run OS 9 at all).
I bought the IIIc on eBay and it works flawlessly except for the fact that it won't sync. I can click on the hotsync square on the screen of the IIIc and get two options :
    1. Direct Serial
    or
    2. IR (Infrared) to PC/Handheld.
It came with a cable that has the docking connection on one and and a dual splitter on the other - one lead has the serial (female) end and the other is a USB connector. I am able to charge it on the PB using the USB but likely only because it is a powered USB port.
I have tried two different serial to USB adapters and so far, the Powerbook still is not seeing the IIIc.
A friend is giving me a cradle from his old IIIe but it has a serial connection. I expect I will have the same problem with this cradle.
Does anybody have any suggestions ?
Is there an adapter that can be used with OS X/Tiger ?
I have installed Palm Desktop 4.2.1 and have iSync.

    Hi,
I have the same problem with my IIIc and powerbook G4 (no syncing with isync).I went ahead and bought the keyspan serial adaptor and still can't get the palm to sync. I also have desktop 4.2.1, running Tiger. I can get the palm to Hotsync with a PC via the standard serial port as well as the Keyspan serial adaptor to usb.

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
It depends on the version of Vista you have (32-bit or 64-bit):
32-bit Vista: should sync with Hotsync cable using Palm Desktop 6.2 (Support & Downloads link above) along with free PalmHotsyncSetup utility from www.pimlicosoftware.com
64-bit Vista: since there are no 64-bit drivers, your only hope is to sync with Infrared beaming using an IRDA adapter ("dongle") on your computer, along with the above software combination.
Good luck, let us know how you make out with it.

  • Using Palm OS with Mac OS X

Is it possible to run an older PalmOS 3.x device and a newer PalmOS 5.x device on the same Mac computer ?
I have an old Handspring Visor Edge that runs on Palm OS 3.5x that I used to sync with my G4 Mac using Palm Desktop 4.0.
I just bought a new Treo 650 that runs on Palm OS 5.x, that required that I upgrade my Palm Desktop application to 4.2.1, which is not compatible with my Visor.
I want to give the Visor to my wife to be used on her Mac User account, but I'm unable to sync because it won't work with the Palm 4.2 application, and I can't install two different Palm OS applications in the Mac applications folder.
So is it possible to run an older Palm device and a newer Palm device on the same Mac computer ?

Each user has their own Applications folder. If you could get one of them to install there, that might do it. Or maybe manually move one of them there after installing it, before installing the other.

  • Sync Palm IIIc with online calendar?

    Hi
I sync my Nokia phone with a online calendar (google or scheduleworld or other), but I would like to share the calendar with my wife.
The easy solution would be to give her another mobile phone, but she like the one she has, and don't want another. But she has a Palm IIIc
she always carry with her, so I am looking for a way to sync it with an online calendar. Can Outlook do the job? I must admit it is not my
prefered solution, because it is a rather expensive one. What are there alternatives?
    Post relates to: Palm m515

Hello lianergoist and welcome to the Palm forums.
You can configure your Google calendar to sync with Microsoft Outlook (details) and then configure the Palm HotSync Manager to sync with Outlook.  That way, the data from Google can flow into Outlook and when your wife HotSync's here IIIc, the data will be downloaded into her Date Book application.

Another good tweak is to disable GUI boot this can be found by typing msconfig in the start panel search and in boot menu check the no gui boot and it will bypass gui for faster startup.
Also by default your system will only start using one core, once again type msconfig and boot menu tab under advanced options check number of processors to use at startup.
I notice you can commit memory on this tab as well, does anyone know if its reccomeneded or will cause instability?

    * One more i forgot for those of us that like to use the run command feature you can return to the menu like this.
To make the 'run' command appear on the start menu:
Right click the 'start' menu and choose 'properties.' Choose the 'start menu' tab.
    Click the 'customize' button.
Scroll down until you find the option titled 'run command' and check it. Hit 'ok'.
Also, the text field at the bottom of the start menu with ghost italiacs saying 'Start Search' is essentially the same as the Run command windows, but you will need the ACTUAL 'Run' command window for a few things.  I guess I am just trying to let peaople who dont already know, you CAN type cmd in the "Start Search' text field and get a command prompt window.  There's my Cliff Clavin for the week!!!

  • Palm IIIc - Trying to sync with Entourage on a G5 Tower

I am certain this issue has probably been ansewered in the past, but I would like to know the process I must follow in order to sync my Palm IIIc with my Entourage contact list.
Also, I would like to know how to send programs down the line to this device.
I tried to use the instructions I was directed to by Palm's web site. But, I keep getting the following dialog box:
    Application Launch Failure
The application "HotSync Manager" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "4<HotSync Manager><HotSync Manager><HotSyncLib.PPC>"
I used to use this device with my old G3 iMac. I bought the USB kit so I could use it then and it worked like a champ. It has not been used in a few years. I took it out the other day and thought I would use it again. But, this problem has me perplexed.
I am running Tiger (OS X ver. 10.4.3) on my G5 (single CPU 1.8GHz "late 2004") with 1.25 GB of RAM.
I probably need to update the OS version on the Palm IIIc. But, until I can get the communications working, that is academic.
If someone who has lots of experience with syncing devices like this could provide me with a sequence of events I must follow in order to make this work, I would really appreciate it.
Like I said earlier, I would like to be able to sync my Entourage contact list and appointment schedule with this device. Also, I would like to be able to download Palm software from my G5 to the handheld.
    Thanks!

    I had Entourage configured incorrectly.

  • Can I use Palm Desktop 4.2.1 with Snow Leopard?

I had a Visor Pro, which unfortunately was stolen along with my Mac PowerBook G4.  I have ordered a new Mac laptop (MacBook Pro), but I am not going to be able to replace the Visor.
I want to be able to continue using the Palm Desktop application - I had version 4.2.1 for the Mac. I have 10 years of information in that program, I don't know one better and would like to continue to use it, Visor or no Visor.
    I have several questions:
Is Palm Desktop Version 4.2.1 for Mac compatible and will run on a MacBook Pro running Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard?
If I do a "migration assistant" to move my applications to the new computer from my backup harddrive, will the Palm program move over okay and be useable? Or,---
Do I have to install Palm Desktop from scratch?  If so, can I download Palm Desktop from the website - I cannot find a page anywhere on palm.com to download the program.  Does anyone have a link?
Or, is the Palm Desktop program that would work with Snow Leopard a different version than the 4.2.1 I have?  And if so, how do I upgrade/move my data from 4.2.1 to a newer version?
I don't need to be able to HotSync as I no longer have the Palm device.  I just want to be able to use the desktop software.
    Thanks for the help,
    Tara

    Tara,
I could have been you asking a very similar question, although I'm still not sure on the solution after some of the knowledgeable answers.
Like you, I have been using Palm Desktop to store 5 years of information, and I'm getting ready to buy the new iMac who reps tell me is probably not compatible with Palm Software anymore or will not and I should find other alternatives to store all my information.
For instance, I use Palm as my date book and To Do List which I find very convenient.  Apple reps told me I could try getting used to iCal for this which I have been doing lately to try & get used to it.
Then there are my addresses.  I also use Palm to store all my basic addresses (some with E-mail, some without).  It was recommended to me to just use the address book that comes with the iMac.  I've never used it but I can see in itself, it's easy to add addresses.  My computer consultant also told me that she could easily transfer the addresses from those on Palm to my Thunderbird which I use with Firefox.  So, if all my addresses were transferred from my Palm to Thunderbird, then I would just have them on Thunderbird, but I find it easier navigating them in Palm.
The last thing I use Palm for and the most important is under the menu of "Memos".  For each category, I have created an alphabetized subject, like computers, legal, passwords, shopping (about 30 topics) and when I want to save important information, I go to that category and write as much or as little as a reference.  I wondered "which" application I would use in order to create a similar way of looking up information on subjects.
I copied/pasted it all into a simple word document but that's not really made for what I want.
The last time I went to an Apple store and explained what I wanted -- they were the ones who suggested to use iMac addresses to store my Palm addresses, iCal to use as a new calendar and to do list, and finally an application (on the dock) called "E-mail" where I could do a similar thing as I did on my Palm by creating a series of categories, and when I click on it, a memo page comes up where I can type anything I want to related to that topic.  It was demonstrated to me, altho I forgot how she did it, but although it was not meant for a function like that, it's easily done as with the Palm.  I told my computer consultant this.
She was concerned that I may not be able to use my Thunderbird G-mail system if I have all my info in iMac applications.  Yet if the addresses are in Thunderbird as well, I can't see why that would interfer.
Anyway, today she sent me this link & question and I start reading about a "sync" application and I would have no problem.  They also mentioned software called Benno, but told me to try and use Apple apps first instead of having to go out and buy a whole new application to replace the functions of Palm.
Ideally, I would love to continue to use Palm Desktop as I'm using it on this desktop, but I'm  not clear if I can.  If I can't, what might be my best solution given what I wrote.  I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Trudijane

  • Palm IIIc recharge problem

I found my Palm IIIc, and I got it recharging for a bit, but now when I try to recharge it, I put it on the cradle, it says that it recharges, but the light is not on and I have tested, without the light, it doesn't recharge. I'd like to use this Palm IIIc again. I have tried all the resets.
No, I'd like to keep this Palm.
    Post relates to: Palm IIIc

If you have tried all resets including the "in-cradle" reset which supposedly resets the internal charging circuitry, then it seems to me you are facing a hardware problem...either internally with the Palm (i.e. the connector is bad or the battery is a goner), or the charging cradle and/or AC adapter are bad (seems unlikely, but possible).
Sending the IIIc in to Palm for repair is a bad option (like, $150 for out-of-warranty repair). You can spend a bit of money for a new cradle and/or AC adapter, and if that doesn't do it, spend more money trying to replace the battery yourself (go to www.pdaparts.com ) with no guarantee in either case that you'll fix it.
By the time it's all said and done, you might easily spend nearly what it would have cost you to buy something new...or, if you really like the IIIc, a replacement IIIc on eBay.
Bottom line: You might luck out with a new cradle/charger...or replacing the battery yourself might be successful, and fun to try at the same time if you like tinkering. But as the commercial says, "you can pay me now, or you can pay me later."

  • Palm IIIc - is there any validity left?

I'm trying to resurrect this old model and make it work for my current purposes, though I'm having more than some trouble getting it to do what I want.
Basically, I'm just curious if anyone knows of any solutions to these problems:
    1. I need a note-taking program - something better than memopad - that I can type notes into, draw the occasional doodle (schematic drawings for schoolwork), and finally has the ability to transfer everything back to XP in a format I can edit/print.  Is there such a piece of software out there?  Can a guy still get it?
    2. If such a piece of software exists, it likely won't work on OS 3.5.3, and while I've been searching for a way to legally upgrade to 4.1, I've been running into wall after wall.  Is there a way I can get my hands on this OS?  Am I actually on the right track in believing that this OS will work on the Palm IIIc?
If I can make this good old IIIc work for me, that will make me the happiest Electronics Engineering student out there.  If I have to upgrade, I guess I have to upgrade, but I'm willing to give this IIIc a chance - it'll surely be less expensive to make it do what I want to do then to buy a new one, plus a keyboard, extras... etc...
Thanks for reading the long post guys - I hope some of you can help!

I'm not very familiar with the IIIc but have you checked out Diddlebug? It supports 3.5 and is free.
    http://diddlebug.sourceforge.net/
As for a better memo pad (I know you didn't ask but I thought I'd suggest it as well), check out PSMemo, which supports  3.5 as well.
    http://jove21.com/palm/palmware/psmemo/
As for converting or transferring the file over to XP, you are really stretching it.  The best I've found and use is Suntzu's MemoManager.  Not sure if it will support 3.5 (doubt it, but it's worth a try).
You may want to get a screen capture program to capture the screen of your device and then transfer the image over.  There's Screenshot Hack (not free)

Wow.  Took me a while to rack my brain thinking of what to suggest.  Hope it helps

  • Trying to sync addresses from Palm VII To Palm IIIc

I am using the new Palm One software and the same user and the addresses on my computer will not sync with a Palm IIIc.  Hot Sync works but the addresses will not sync to the Palm IIIc handheld.  I have done a hard reset and made sure both user names are the same. What am I doing wrong?
    Post relates to: Palm Pilot

Hello and welcome to the Palm forums.
When you sync for the first time after a hard reset, the computer will prompt you, "there is no user name associated with this account..." You need to select your old user name to get the old info to come back onto your palm. You should not type in the same user name in the box where they allow you to enter a new user name.

  • Use Palm Desktop 4.1.4 to sync Palm Vx to Clie

I apologize in advance if this is the wrong group/forum.  It seems to fit better than Software for the mobile PDA device.  If I am wrong, I am open to suggestions as to a more appropriate forum.
I ran into the wonky digitizer problem that seems to afflict Palms, for which there are plenty of short-term software fixes, but for which the long term fix is to reseat the digitizer cable:
    http://www.directfix.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=GHT&Category_Code=_P5TAKE
The procedure looks positively barbaric.  Frankly, it looks like the Palm Vx was not designed for ease of home tinkering.  I decided that it was time to change PDAs (or move to a smartphone -- however, data plans in my 'hood are a gouger).  Fortunately, I was able to inherit a retired Clie PEG-T665C from a colleague.  It is much bigger than the Vx, but seemed much more straightforward to disassemble for the purposes of reseating the cable; for one thing, it seems to have a screw holding it together rather than glue all the way around.  Another impetus to move away from Vx to Clie is that the graffiti area of the Vx is getting very scuffed, and stylus motions are not registering well at all.  Not good for the blood pressure.
The only unknown was the migration of data from Vx to the Clie.  This "problem" was simplified by the fact that my usage of the Vx was extremely simple: Datebook, Addressbook, and Memopad.  Absolutely nothing more.  For my purposes, the Clie offers no feature advantages, so my switch is only for the ease of reseating the digitizer cable (if it is ever needed), and a more responsive graffiti area.  Since I wasn't using any of the Clie-specific features, I crossed my fingers and hoped that I didn't need to track down Palm Desktop for the Clie; it doesn't seem to be easy to locate, and I don't want to explore the wonderful world of having two Palm Desktop apps on my PC.
Instead, I put the Clie in its cradle, connected it to the USB, and sync'd (sunk?) it to Desktop 4.1.4 that I was using for the Vx.  I noted that the Vx differed in that its cradle used the serial port, though it is quite possible that this not a significant difference.  In sycing the Clie, I was asked by Palm Desktop to create a 2nd user, which I was sure to name differently from the Vx user; the Clie manual said that having two devices with the same name was a recipe for unpredictable results.  After creating 2nd user, I copied the *.dat and *.bak files for Addressbook, Datebook, and Memopad from the Vx user directory to the Clie user directory.  (I had to be logged into Palm Desktop as the Vx user for this to work).  This seemed to migrate the Vx entries to the Clie user, and sync'ing caused the entries to transfer to the Clie itself.
The only hiccup is that the first time sync'ing after copying the files yielded error messages that not all files got copied, though I'm not sure if that was from the Clie to the Clie user account on Palm Desktop, or vice-versa.  The 2nd time I sunk, I didn't get the error messages.  However, if there were a few dropped records, I probably wouldn't notice it from eyeballing the PDA.  So I'm not sure how confident I should be.  My uncertainly gives rise to three questions.
    1. Is there any reason why I should worry about using generic Palm Desktop with the Clie, rather than *the* "Palm Desktop for the Clie" (i.e. Sony's Palm Desktop made specifically for the Clie)?
    2. What is an efficient way to check that all records match between the Clie and the Vx?
    3. Since I am unsure how much to trust the fidelity of the data on the Clie (with respect to the Vx), I would like to use both for some duraton.  Is there a way to use one Palm Desktop account for both devices without incurring the risk of "unpredicitable outcomes" that the Clie manual warns about?  Using one account sure beats copying files between the two accounts.  Copying files between two independent accounts also creates the real risk of having changes occur on both accounts -- I'm not sure how I'd reconcile that (if I was lucky enough to even notice that it happened).
I should also add that both the Vx and the Clie had Palm OS 4.1, though I'm not sure that makes any difference in easing migration and synchronization on the PC side of things.
    Post relates to: Palm Vx

Actually, I just used unix commands to compare addressbook and memopad csv files from the Palm Desktop accounts for the Vx and the Clie. This convinces me that addressbook and memopad got properly migrated from Vx to Clie.  Unfortunately, exporting to csv is not an option for the datebook app, and the dba files contain differences in the nontext characters between the Vx and the Clie.  Is there a way to compare datebooks?
    Thanks.
