Using paths in Photoshop Elements

I want to use paths around objects in photos in Photoshop Elements. I want to select and copy the object inside the path. I can not seem to find this function. Does it not exist in Photoshop Elements, only in other Photoshop software?

Paths is a vector tool found only in full Photoshop, although you can place text on a path in PSE.

Good Morning.  I'm having a problem using both my Photoshop elements and premiere programs.  I've installed the programs, redeemed my code and entered the serial numbers, and created the adobe log-in.  I am able to open up the organizer without problems, but when I try to open up the photo editor (either by trying to open up the program from the main menu, or right-clicking on a photo in the organizer to edit in elements), the program asks me to sign in to adobe (which I can do and it doesn't give an an "incorrect password" or log-in ID error) then accept the terms and conditions.  When I click to accept the terms and conditions, nothing happens and the editor fails to open.  Everytime I click on the program, I get this same "loop" of signing in and accepting T&C's, but the program fails to open.  Any advice?

Premiere Elements 10 is now 64 bit, but not PSE10.
Take a look at your scratch disk set-up and if you have a spare volume, allocate that first before the C drive. Elements use scratch disks when it gets low on RAM.
Turn off face recognition and the auto-analyzer to improve performance.
When editing photos or videos check the task manager to see what background processes may be running and end them temporarily if not needed.

  • Using iPhoto and PhotoShop Elements together

    Hi all,
I purchased my lovely little MacBook Pro a week ago and the onyl problem I have had so far is dealing with iPhoto.
I love using iPhoto to upload and browse my photos, however I prefer editing them in Photoshop Elements.
I have found I have the following problems:
    - Cannot open a photo from within Photoshop Elements
I have got around this my right-clicking the iPhoto Library folder within Pictures, selecting the Open Selected Items (or something like that), then when I have found the photo, again right-clicking and saying Open with PhotoShop Elements.
Is there an easier way to do this?
    - Once I have edited my photo in Photoshop Elements, I can't view the edited photo in iPhoto.
    Any ideas?
    - In iPhoto, I like to create an Album of photos I would like to edit or upload to my online development company, but iPhoto doesn't seem to save albums in any searchable fashion, so I have to manually move each one into a folder on my desktop. This creates 2 copies of the same photo, which will eventually use a lot of hard disk space.
Is there an easier way to do this?
    Many thanks,

    Sascha
As Larry points out, you need to set PSE as an external editor.
The Right Click Hack is unsuported, and more importantly, is precisely why you can't see the changes in iPhoto.
You can set Photoshop as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically.
Albums are virtual entities - there is no corresponding folder of images. So, create the album, do your edits as described above, then to upload, if you're development doesn't have an iPhoto export plug in, select the Pics and go File -> Export and export them to a folder on the desktop. iPhoto will create a copy of the pics incorporating your changes. Upload from there - and after your upload is finished, trash the copies on the desktop - your pics are safe in iPhoto.

  • Using actions in Photoshop Elements from App store.

I have Photoshop Elements 10 that I downloaded from the app store - can I use actions in it? Having trouble installing them on my mac and was wonding if it was something I was doing wrong or if it wasn't even possible. Thanks!

Well, first of all, the only time I would consider buying the app store version is if you have a lot of macs you need to install it on. Otherwise, I would buy the regular retail version. While you can use your apple ID to qualify for upgrade pricing where it asks for a serial number, it's smarter just to shop around for the full version, which is usually much cheaper than adobe's upgrade price if you look around at online retailers and big box stores.
EDIT One other problem with the app store version is that you can no longer reinstall it once a new version is out in the app store. Adobe does make downloads of older versions available, but they all require a standard serial number, so the app store info won't work.

  • Is anybody use LR with Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac ?

I've just bought Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac on a PM G5 (OS 10.5.2). PSE works but LR don't find it as external editor. I have done what is the Knowledge Base, I've deleted all adobe products (and all related files in /Library an home/Library) and reinstall only PSE 6 and LR 1.3.1 .
In KB, they tell that LR uses a com.adobe.Photoshop.Elements.plist but PSE 6 creates a com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist (without a dot between Photoshop and Elements). I've tried to duplicates this file but that does not work.
I don't understand why LR does not provide a way to specify where Photoshop (or Elements) is. I don't know what to do now.

For some reason Adobe decided to change the bundle name for the PSE6 application from com.adobe.photoshop.elements to com.adobe.PhotoshopElements. This change is also reflected in the Preferences file names.
Lightroom (1.3.1 and 1.4) seem to use the MacOS core services to find PSE - but use the com.adobe.photoshop.elements (and com.adobe.photoshop for full PS) bundle names.
The immediate fix, if you're handy with a hex editor, is to go into the Lightroom application bundle, find the file AgEditExternally.lua and patch the string "com.adobe.photoshop.elements" in the file so it becomes "com.adobe.PhotoshopElements" (remember a null terminator and make a copy of the file first!).
If that's Greek to you then either live with it and wait for an official fix or set up Elements 6 as the 'Additional External Editor'.

  • IPhoto 11 bug when using external editor (Photoshop Elements)

In iPhoto 11, my iPhoto database is confused/corrupted whenever I edit a picture in my external editor (Photoshop Elements 8). I believe this is an iPhoto problem because the picture is not corrupted until I quit iPhoto try to re-open the edited version.
    Steps I take:
    1. Pick a file, and "Edit in External Editor". Duplicate of the file is made (ThisPic.jpg becomes ThisPic_2.jpg), and that duplicate is opened in PSE. I edit the photo in PSE, and hit Save - PSE updates ThisPic_2.jpg. I close PSE, go back to iPhoto, and I can do whatever I want to the file - double click to view larger, export, everything seems fine. When I pick "File | Reveal in Finder" and use either the "modified file" or "original file" option, they take me to ThisPic_2.jpg in the finder.
    2. Close iPhoto
    3. Re-open iPhoto
    4. Now, that file seems to be corrupt in iPhoto. I can see the thumbnail image for ThisPic_2.jpg, but nothing else works. I double click on the file, and I get a black screen with a triangle and an exclamation point in it. When I try to export the file, nothing happens.
The interesting thing is when I go into "File | Reveal in Finder". When I pick the "modified file", it doesn't seem to find it - I am shown the root of my hard drive in the finder. But when I pick "original file", it takes me to ThisPic_2.jpg, and I can use preview to see that my edits are still there.
I copied that file to the desktop, re-imported it into iPhoto, and I can access that photo again through iPhoto - everything works, even after I close and re-open iPhoto.
I reported this through the iPhoto Feedback option. I thought I'd share what I found in case it helps anyone else.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I get the same response when I follow your workflow. If you select the thumbnail of that photo and use the Photos ➙ Revert to Original menu option you will be able to view the photo in full size.
Evidently editing in iPhoto with an external editor puts the edits on the duplicated original file and puts that file in the same Masters subfolder as the first file was imported into. Once iPhoto is restarted the links are messed up and the Revert gets rid of the "edited" link and keeps the link to the file in the Masters folder.
It definitely is a bug. However, it's not taking up more space on the hard drive than the edit that resulted in a modified file linked to the original file. There still are just two files.
Subsequent edits to the file with the external editor result is the edits being added to the file with no problems if iPhoto is closed and relaunched. The downside is that if you make 3 edits to the file you can't go back one edit. It's non reversible. The edited version can be deleted leaving the untouched original version.
Subsequent edits to the same file with iPhoto work as usual, with a modified version being created.
So Old Toad, I have just gone from iPhoto 9 to iPhoto 11 and step by step this is what is happening for me.
In iPhoto 9 if I selected photoshop to alter an image it created one duplicate version of the image and put that into the modified folder and that edited image became the image you would see in the events viewer. All very logical.
Now iPhoto 11 is doing the same for me but is creating multiple duplicates ie. everytime I select photoshop to edit an image. One image I edited recently has now got 6 versions in the library. If that is the way iPhoto works then that will be fine as it is doing it's job for me but the caviat is have I got 6 times the memory space being used up or does it just appear that way? If the memory space useage isn't being increased then I am OK with this new way of doing things but if the memory space is being used up then it is a fiasco - especially as apple are concentrating on writing their systems to use up less space than before in line with current thinking.
Look forward to you clarifying this point if you can.

  • Using the Tools - PhotoShop Elements 6

    Software is PhotoShop Elements 6
My Tools functions seem to have stopped working.  The HAND selection stays present no matter what function I select.  I tried to use the earser function but the HAND selection is still there.  No matter what other selection I choose, the HAND will NOT switch to my chosen function.
Everything used to work just fine as I am used to working with Photoshop Elements.

You could try reset all tools - click the down pointing arrow on the left of the tools options bar.

  • Using two computers - Photoshop Elements

I live in the USA for part of the year and the UK for the remainder and wish to purchase Adobe Photoshop Elements - Does the license let me download it onto 2 separate computers (one in UK & one in USA) . I use a separate hard drive for files so I can take them from place to place

Are you the only user of both computers?  If so then yes you can install it on both computers.

  • Can Premiere Elements 9 be used simultaneously with Photoshop Elements 8?

I currently have a computer with photoshop elements 8 and premiere elements 8 installed.
Unfortunately, the premiere elements 8 program does not recognize the video output from my Sony Cybershot camera.  However, Premiere Elements 9 does.
If I purchase and install Premiere Elements 9, will it inegrate with the organizer and with Photoshop Elements 8 the same way the Premiere Elements 8 does?
Or will it create 2 separate organizer programs or other compatibilty problems?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

Thanks so much for the helpful answers, they're much appreciated.
I think I'll just go ahead an purchase the Photoshop9/Premiere9 bundle since the extra cost is probably worth it to me to have a single organizer program that will interface with both.
    Thanks again,
    Kevin

  • How do you use brushes in Photoshop Elements 10 in Windows 8?

I just got a new HP Envy preloaded with Windows 8 and it's been a learning curve trying to figure out this new OS. I used to move brushes in Windows 7 just by dragging them to the photo I wanted them on -- super easy. Now with Windows 8, it won't let me do that. How do you work with brushes in Windows 8?

For those with earlier versions of PSE without Guided Edit, try this:
    - Select and feather teeth 1 or 2 px.
    - Enhance > Adjust Color > Hue/Saturation, or add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.
    - Choose Yellows from menu.
    - Lower Saturation to remove yellow.
    - Optionally increase Lightness.
Here I moved Saturation all the way left and changed Lightness to +50.

  • Error using edit in Photoshop Elements 8

When I click on the edit button I get the following error.
Searched the forum and found no answers.
Any one have any suggestions?  I did reboot and tried again.
    Thanks

Sync consumes space on your hard disk. To begin with you can turn sync off. To do so, please launch Task Manager / Activity Monitor and kill the exe ElementsOrganizerSync.exe. Now launch Organizer and click Edit >> Preferences >> Backup and Sync >> Now untick the checkbox corresponding to Backup/Sync.
Now the problem should not recur.
Also, just fyi.. Sync has been dropped in Version11 so this issue won't be visible at all
    Thanks

  • Saving .jpg files using Photoshop elements 11

I'm having troupble uing "save" and "save as" in Photoshop Elements 11.  This just started happening about a month ago.  Appprox. half the pictures I save do not appear in the designate file.  Instead a box with "JPG" inside appears.  The only way I can see the actual picture is to use a different application and resave.  I have an Apple.  Can anyone help with this?

Then it is absolutely vital to delete the preferences. You must do this for PSE every time you do  a major OS X upgrade, like from 10.7 to 10.8 or from 10.8 to 10.9.
For PSE 11, the files you want are
    com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 paths
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 settings
and any lockfiles with the same names. If you use the organizer, also look for anything starting with com.adobe.Elements Organizer.
    General directions are here:
    http://barbarabrundage.com/2013/10/28/photoshop-elements-and-os-x-mavericks/
And take your finder windows out of cover flow view, if you've been using that--there's a known bug between mavericks  cover flow view and adobe products.

In photoshop elements 6, as far as i know, you can only change the Reference Point Location for transforms using the small grid in the left hand corner of the tool options bar with Transform enabled.

  • Using lightroom 5.6 and Photoshop elements 12

When I am using Lightroom 5.6 and want to Edit In Photoshop the picture transfers over to PS but it won't allow me to use layers.  How can I fix this?

Usually that means that lightroom sent over the photo in 16 bits/channel and you want 8 bits/channel in order to use layers in photoshop elements.
After you open the image from lightroom into photoshop elements you can go Image>Mode and click on 8 bits/channel
or in the Lightroom Preferences (Edit)>External Editing set the Bit Depth to 8 bits/component
