Using "Photo Stream" option with "Photo Library" enabled

Hello,
Since iOS 8.1, I enabled the "photo library" option, but the "photo stream" option is still there in the settings app.
What's the use of this option now that the library is enabled ?  I'm not understanding why the two options can co-exist.
Thanks
Phil

Hey pcarrier80,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, you want to know how both features would work together. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ
After you enable iCloud Photo Library, all your original photos and videos are organized in one library. My Photo Stream will upload recent photos to share with your other devices, but iCloud Photo Library stores your originals.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Have a great day,
Mario

  • I used to see a monthly "Feb 2014" photo stream category in my library for each month.  Now all of my photo stream photos (from my iPhone) are under "iCloud" under "Sharing" and I don't know how to get my pix out of there and separate them into libraries

My computer has changed how it accepts photos from my phone.  They used to post into a library by the month and year, e.g., "Feb 2014 photo stream," but now all of the photos from my phone for the past year or so are lumped together into the "Shared" section under "photo stream." I did not put them there (that I know of) and now don't know how to get them out and into a library where I can categorize them.

The monthly events "Feb2014" will show you all photos that have been imported from "My Photo STream", if you have enabled "Automatic Import" in the "Preferences > iCloud" tab.
The albums you are seeing under "iCloud" are the "Shared Photo Streams" and "My Photo Stream". To import from your "Shared Streams" drag the photos frommthe Shared Streams album to the Projects in the library panel.

  • Photo Stream import directly into Library (consolidated)?

I have just started using Photo Stream with Aperture and it's a wonderful feature, however something prompted me to look for the original photo and I couldn't see the usual "Open in Finder" option, which said to me it was Consolodated. Now, I don't mind, because I Consolidate my Library anyway, but was wondering if this actually happened.
It seems that the guide here is a little out of date now as Adjustments can be performed on the streamed photos without "importing" them, however that's achieved?
    ref: http://www.tuaw.com/2011/11/06/deep-dive-aperture-and-photo-stream-how-do-they-w ork/
I was able to export the photo, as one normally would with a Consolidated Library, but I am wondering if that was from an online supposerty or not?
Anyway, if the Photos are Consolidated then that is yet another step taken care of and I am certainly greatful for that, not least because all iOS devices capture GPS info too, things just get better!
If someone can clear this up for me that would be great, thanks.

The confusion is due to your use of Photo Stream image : When you (auto)-import from the Photo Stream you have two different image versions -  the Photo Stream copy of the image and the imported image, that is no longer in the stream.  And as Frank Caggiano says, you can only edit the imported image version in your Aperture library, not the Photo Stream image. Trying to edit a Photo Stream image will result in this message - at least, that is what I see in my library:
"This photo is in Photo Stream and cannot be edited. You may edit the last imported version in your library."
A photo Stream image is not part of the Aperture library - it can only be browsed using Aperture.
To convince yourself, that the imported image is truely managed and not referenced, select the monthly imported project and set a filter in the search field with the rule: "File status is managed".
All images in the project should still be showing and not be removed by the filter.
Frank Caggiano I think you're confused. The images are in the Stream, they are always there, but they appear (as in William Lloyd's photo example) in Aperture, yes I do have them set to be imported, but they very well couldn't be seen within Aperture unless I did so.
It is still not clear from your post, where you are trying to view the Photo images:
In the "Web > Photo Stream"  section of the library inspector, where the Photo Stream can be viewed,
Or in the "Projects" section, where you can browse the images that have been imported to Aperture.
Are you saying, that the "Web > Photo Stream" section of the Library Inspector did not show your Photo Stream images, until you enabled automatic import?

  • Photo Stream images deleted from library!

Recently, on launch, Aperture reported that Photo Stream was not enabled (even though I had not changed settings since enabling). I (re)enabled it, but after doing so, only the most recent photos (for the past month or so) were recognized as being in the stream (even though aproximately an additional month's photos are still indicated as being in my stream on all my iOS devices — at least for the time being). More importantly (and clearly a SERIOUS BUG): all the missong photos that had already been downloaded to my Aperture library ("automatic import" is checked in preferences) were gone, not only from the library, but also deleted from all the albums (e.g. flickr, facebook) to which they had been published.
Is Photo Stream working? Automatic deletion of photos, including shared photos) seems like a big problem!

Yep, I and others have noticed it too.  There's another thread here on the issue.
I am not talking about the Photstream shutting itself off issue (which IS happening for some people, but not me), but the situation wherein photos that have been automatically imported into "Oct. 2011 Photo Stream," "Nov 2011 Photo Stream," etc., disappear when their Photostream counterparts disappear.  This essentially negates the entire usefulness of Photo Stream.
I have used one workaround, albeit a cumbersome one: rebuild your Aperture Library (hold down on command and option while double clicking on your Library to open Aperture).  Your lost photos should show up in a "Recovered Photos" folder.  I think this works because the masters that have been auto-imported from Photo Stream aren't really deleted from Aperture.
I hope Apple recognizes the problem and fixes it.  There doesn't seem to be a big uproar about it, though. :-/

  • Shared photo stream option missing iphoto 11

In Iphoto / preferences there is a missing option to check
    Shared photo streams.
    Iphoto 11 - upgrade
    OSX 10.7.5
Anyone know how to resolve ?

Upgrade your OS - shared PhotoStream requires OS X version 10.8.2 or later and iPhoto '11 version 9.4 or newer and IOS 6.0 or later
What do I need to use Photo Stream?
To use Photo Stream, including Shared Photo Streams, you need an iCloud account, compatible devices, and up-to-date software:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6.0 or later
Mac with OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 or later and iPhoto 9.4 or Aperture 3.4 or later
PC with Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) and the iCloud Control Panel 2.1 or later for Windows
Apple TV (2nd generation) with Software Update 5.1 or later
You can still use Photo Stream without Shared Photo Streams if your devices meet these requirements:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5.1 or later
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and iPhoto 9.2.2 or Aperture 3.2.3 or later
PC with Windows 7 or Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) and the iCloud Control Panel v2.0 or later for Windows
Apple TV (2nd generation) with Software Update 5.0 or later

  • TS3989 Photo stream option is not coming in my icloud homepage, let me know how to configure it

In the icloud page i could find very few options,
    No photo stream option,
    need suggestion

That is correct, you are not able to access PhotoStream using a web browser.
To enable Photo Stream on your computer you need to install the iCloud control panel:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1455
Then you need to set up iCloud and enable Photo Stream on both your iPhone and PC:
    http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
After enabling Photo Stream on your computer, a Photo Stream folder will be created in the "Pictures" folder.
    Photo Stream FAQs:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4486
Note: Photo Stream is a syncing service, not a storage service, and only photos from the last 30 days will be present in your Photo Stream. This is to give your devices enough time to download your photos.
    Hope this helps.

  • Aperture 3.4.3 - shared photo stream option missing

Shared Photo Stream option missing from Preferences in Aperture 3.4.3.  When I move photos over to "Shared Photo Stream" under Recents, it seems to import the images, but I'm not sure where they're going....i.e. I never specified a Shared Photo Stream name to associate them with.  Thoughts?  I'm running 10.7.5.

Where do you see "Shared Photo Stream" under "Recent"?
The Photo Streams are supposed to appear in the "Web" section of the library, not in the "Recent" section. Are you seeing a recent project there, accidentally named "Shared Photo Stream"? Then you are dragging your images to a project, and not to a stream.
Look in the "Web" section of the Library inspector for "Photo Stream". If the stream is hidden, hover with the mouse to the far right of the title "WEB", until the word "Show" appears.
Selecting a stream and opening should make the "PhotoStream" button appear in the footer of the window.

  • The Photo Stream option dissapeared from the left side-bar in iPhoto.

Hello everyone, just to let you all know, I'm new to the world of Mac. As I was setting up Photo Stream in iPhoto, I accidently clicked on the "No Thanks" option instead of clicking on the "Turn on Photo Stream" option. Now the link has disappeared from the side-bar in iPhoto, I am affraid I might have ruined my ability to 'photostream'. Is there anyway I can redo the entire process? Any input will be greatly appreciated. By the way, I enabled photostream in iCloud from system prefences. Will enabaling it in iCloud make Photo Stream work even though it does not appeare in the iphoto side-bar?

  • Why can't I share a photo stream album with all of my contacts?

I have been able to share one photo stream album with my sister who has an iPhone. When I try to share another album with both a friend who has an iPhone and another sister who does not have an iPhone, their names are greyed out in my contact list. Looking over my contact list for sharing photo stream albums, half of my contacts are normal, and the other half are greyed out. Any suggestions on how I can remedy this nd share with everyone in my contact list?

For users who have iOS devices, they get a direct connection to the shared stream.  For others, they need to get an email with a link that they use in a browser.  Not too clear on the details myself, but the following link should provide the answers you need.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Try disabling photo stream on your device (settings > iCloud), restarting your device and then re-enabling photo stream.
If this doesn't help you may need to reset photo stream. You can do this at icloud.com by clicking on your name in the top right corner and then the advanced settings in the pop-up dialogue box that appears.
