Using Photoshop as External Editor in Aperture

I'll be switching from PC to Mac soon. I use Photoshop to do all my editing. The database mgt tool for my PC does not have a Mac version, so I'm hoping Aperture 3 will fit my needs. I now make three versions of a photo - the original, a "working" version and the final version used for prints (I sell the prints). The PC file names are the same except for CAM or WORK or FINAL added to the end of the file name. Here is what I do. I find the original version (CAM) in the database and start PS and open the file from the DB program. I make my changes in PS and do a "save as" in PS with the WORK or FINAL in the new name. The new file will be added to the DB. So, now there are 2 DB entries - the original and the final along with 2 seperate files.
From what I read, Aperture doesn't like the "Save as" in PS. If I do a "Save" in PS, won't that just update the original file? How can I save the modified version as a new file (with all layers, etc.) and have it added to Aperture?
Looking for HELP!

When You use PS from Aperture, then Aperture makes a new version (a new file) that pass to PS.
When You save from PS don't change the name, the file will be updated with all the variations made in PS (if You want, also with layers).
This file is recognized in Aperture as a new file.
In fact You have two files on disc.
If You use directly PS without pass through AP, then You have two files, but the new file (made from PS) must be imported into AP.

  • Photoshop File Save useing Photoshop as external editor

When I open a file using Photoshop CS2 as the external editor within Aperture 1.1 I can't save the file and view it in Aperture. I get an error message in Photoshop: "Could not complete your request due to a program error". I have to do a "save as" and import the "saved as" file into Aperture. This is true whether I try to save as a PSD file or as a TIFF.
Does anyone know how I can save files in Photoshop and view them as a version in Aperture?
    Tom

These files were imported into the Aperture library from folders of pictures on my hard drive and then exported from Aperture to Photoshop for editing. When I try to save the edited files in Photoshop, (which is supposed to automatically put it back in Aperture) I get the photoshop error mentioned in my original question. Aperture may be able to read TIFF and PSD files, but that doesn't help if Photoshop is unable to save the exported Aperture version back into Aperture. It appears to me that this is a photoshop error message due to some sort of incompatibility with Aperture. That's my guess, but it still does not solve my problem.

  • Color Profile Options using Photoshop as External Editor

    Dear Folks:
When I open an image in Photoshop as external editor, I get these choices:
    - use the imbedded profile (instead of the working space)
    - convert documents colors to the working space
    - discard the embedded profile (don't color manage)
I'm using Photoshop 7 and iPhoto 5. My Camera is a Canon Powershot S410. iPhoto seems to retain the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 working space from my camera.
What choice do I want and why?
Is there something odd about my camera?
    Thanks!

  • Using Photoshop as external editor

On a 64 bit machine with the 64 bit version of LR installed, evoking Photoshop as external editor still incorrectly opens the 32 bit version of PS, not the 64 bit as used to happen with LR4. One can work around this if one remembers to open the 64 bit version of PS beforehand, but still, this is surely an easy bug to correct.

  • I am using Photoshop as external editor but can't use all the filters

    Hi,
I have just started using Aperture and have set-up photoshop CS2 as the external editor. I'm trying to add film grain to some of my images using the artistic filters. If I open one of my RAW (EOS 5D) images in Bridge once open in CS2 all the filters are available for use.
If I select a RAW image in Aperture and use the open with external editor feature, once the image is launched in CS2, half the filters are unavailable. Why is this and how do I over come the problem? Is it because Apertur opens the file in a funny format?
Many thanks in advance for your help

a few filters will (or have already) changed in cs3, however most remain the same in terms of 8 vs 16 bit. filters who are based on the rgb channels will be "grayed out" in the filters menu if an image has 16bit colours (regardless of tiff or psd of course).

  • Where does my saved file go after using photoshop as external editor

Okay, I understand that when I have a 30MB picture file and edit with photoshop afterwards, I click on Save and back into aperture i'm left with a 175MB picture (bigger or smaller sometimes), but my question is this:
Since i'm working with all referenced images that have been stored on my external hard drive, after i make the edits and the file size explodes, does aperture save that large file in the aperture library, or to my external drive?
I keep my aperture library file on my computer, but the images on an external drive.
Should I make a new library file and store that on an external drive also?
The whole point of using referenced images is to save space on the main computer, but if it's saving a file that's 6 times larger onto my computer instead of the external drive, it kind of defeats the purpose right?
Thank you all for your superior technical wizardry and support! I appreciate everything!

You can test this for yourself, but I just tested with a new Project, importing to Aperture to remain at the currently location, editing a photo with Photoshop. The Tiff that Aperture first created for PS to edit was created in the original folder, and not in the Aperture Library. The edit, when Saved, was made to that new copy in the original folder location, and thus in the external location.

  • Trouble with PSE12 as External Editor in Aperture 3.3

I previously used Photoshop Elements 6 (PSE6) as my external editor in Aperture 3.3 with no problem.  After having installed PSE12 and set it as the external editor in Aperture, something is amiss.  When I choose a photo for external editing in PAS12, PSE12 launches but the photo never opens in PSE12.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Am I missing something?  Should I just stick with PSE6?  Thanks.....

Have you selected the PSE application or the PSE folder in the settings for the external editor? When you are setting the external editor, make sure you dive into the PS Elements Support folder, where the application is hidden.

  • PSE 10 as external editor for Aperture 3 - 8-bit TIFF and what color space?

    Hi all,
I'm taking the plunge and trying PSE 10 as my external editor for Aperture 3.  I understand that I need to export as 8-bit TIFF files (not 16) because PSE can't do certain things with 16-bit files.  Is that right?  Should I specify a color space in Aperture or leave it as "no profile selected"?  (I don't know much about color spaces; I'm not a pro.)  I print on an Epson RX580 Stylus Photo printer, if that matters.
I'll be grateful for any help and advice.  Thanks.

Can I suggest you buy Philip Andrews book, Advanced Photoshop Elements 10.  he explains colour spaces and much much more very clearly and exactly what can be done with 16 bit files and what you then have to change to 8 bit to accomplish.  He's written basic and advanced guides for Elements since day one.  Usually available from Amazon for under £20.

  • External Editor in Aperture

I mistakenly selected using Lightroom as an external editor in Aperture. When I go back to preferences, I can't seem to make the Edit With field blank.
Or in other words, how can I change it such that I always edit with Aperture?

Just tried with my one, Go-to Aperture > Preferences > then when box comes up select Export, it says chose external image editor then all i done was to actually select Aperture itself. It works on my one Michael. Again dont leave it blank make sure you select itself. Hope this works

  • Photoshop as external editor

When using elements 12 as an external editor from aperture the elements opens but no photo appears. In elements 9 it worked fine. Do I have a set up issue?
It worked fine with elements 9 always worked well.

Are you sure you really got the editor itself? It's not the most obvious file. Since PSE 10 it's been buried in support files. You want this one:

  • How to remove an external editor in Aperture 3

I've searched but can't find how to remove an external editor in Aperture 3. The external editing software I was using as a trial simply didn't make the cut.

Are you sure you're talking about an external editor and not a plug-in?
When you remove the application you're using as the external editor it should no longer show up in the *Photos->Edit with* menu. There is no way, short of editing the Aperture plist file, of having it not show up in the *Preferences->External Photo Editor:* field.

  • How to I set up PSE12 to be the external editor for Aperture -  aperture is exporting the photos but they are not showing up in PSE

I want to use PSE12 as external editor for apetture .  the photos are exportd but do not show up in PSE.  Must be some adjustment I can't find?

The article below is for PSE 10, but should be relevant for PSE 12. I recently used the instructions for editing Aperture photos in PSE 11

  • How do I get Elements 12 to work as an external editor in Aperture?

I can't seem to get (my TRIAL Version) of Elements 12 to work properly as an external editor for Aperture.
Whilst I can import RAW or Jpeg images into the Elements 12 programme from my system files I can't export files from Aperture to Elements 12 from the Aperture workspace.
    Any help/suggestions would be appreciated
    Thanks

My guess would be that you chose the logical file rather than the correct file as the PSE editor. You want this one:

  • When using photoshop elements as editor in iPhoto the pic does not show up when PS opens

When using photoshop elements as editor in iPhoto the pic does not show up when PS opens

Ralph9430 offers a good suggestion.  But you may need to do this before taking his advice:
Check in iPhoto's Preferences (which you can open from the iPhoto menu).  Look in General, and make sure "Connecting Camera Opens" is set to "Image Capture").
If it is set to "iPhoto", you won't be able to get to Image Capture easily.

  • Using Photoshop elements 6 as external editor in aperture

I am new to aperture2, have imported photos into the aperture library, from a folder on the harddrive. I have set photoshop elements as the external editor. When i select a photo for external editing i get redirected to elements, do the editing, but when i close and save the edited picture and go back to aperture, i have two of the same pictures in aperture one with two circles in the bottom left corner, one with a square with arrows in, but not the edited version. Checking in finder, the edited picture is in the folder where I imported the photos from. Am a missing a basic setting?

That sounds very strange. You should have the referenced icon in the lower right corner on the edited version as well.
Just thinking; are you using Aperture 1.x by any chance? In the previous version of Aperture the edited image was stored inside the library file, and in version 2.x the edited image is stored together with the original referenced master.
You could try to rebuild your library by holding down the "CMD + OPT"- keys when starting Aperture. Choose from the dialog.
