Using Photoshop CS with iPhoto 5

I recently added Photoshop CS to my PowerBook. Can I use this application to edit photos that are in iPhoto? I know it sounds like a basic question, but I don't know where to start. I tried to import a photo from iPhoto to Photoshop to no avail. Can Photoshop be used directly through iPhoto. Any direction would be appreciated. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hi KLH1,
You can open up prefs for iPhoto and choose "when double clicking on
photo ..do" choose "other" and select Photoshop. Now you can edit all
pictures in your iPhoto library in PhotoShop by double clicking. If you save the photo with the same name and as a flattened file it will be saved right into iPhoto and you will see the changes. If you don't want to save it into iPhoto then do a "save as" and save to the desktop. You will then have the original photo still in iPhoto and your new edited photo on the desktop. If you want you can then import the photo on the desktop with the changed name into iPhoto by dragging it in the iPhoto library viewing window.

You might want to check this thread. Some have had success with CS5 on Windows 8, others not so lucky.

  • How can I use photoshop elements with photos

Title says it all.  I would like to use Photoshop Elements to edit my photos--how do I open them in PSE?

Yes your edits will be there if you import the edited version. Yes it will go to the Cloud with the edits. What you read is that edits made in iPhoto and Aperture after the library has been migrated will not be available in Photos. But you could still export from iPhoto/Aperture to the Finder and then import to Photos, like with PSE.

  • Automatic link to photoshop element with iPhoto 7

    I just bought an iMacG5 to replace a iMacG4 and I have a question about iPhoto 7.
With iPhoto 5, I was able, by a double click on a photo to open Photoshop elements. This was an option in rhe preferences of iPhoto.
With iPhoto7, I have not the same option. I tried many questions in the iPhoto help, without any positive result.
Is it possible to get an automatic link to an external software, photoshop for instance, with iPhoto 7. If yes, how?
Thanks in advance for your help

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.

This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Issue using Photoshop together with Lightroom - "Could not save because..."

I have a really annoying issue with Lightroom and Photoshop CS3. When I use Photoshop as my external editor for Lightroom, Photoshop opens up nicely and I am able to edit. However when I go to save I get the following message "Could not save because the file is already in use or was left open". The only way I'm able to save then is to shut down Lightroom. Then I can save in Photoshop and after that I launch Lightroom again to continue working in there.
I don't know if this has anything to do with this issue, but I do have all my images on a network drive which I access exactly the same way as any external drive.

Online chat with Adobe staff member helped solve the issue.
A corrupted preferences folder was removed, a new one automatically created solved the issue.
New folder was then deleted and old folder reinstated with the original name (if that makes sense).
    Sorted.
    THANK YOU Gokul!

  • Using kodak C360 with Iphoto

Has anyone used the Kodak C360 with Iphoto? The camera is not on the "approved" apple list, but it seems some people in the discussions have still had luck with some cameras working.
    Thanks

    appledesire:
I don't think it will work with iPhoto even if you use a card reader since it uses the Smart Digital memory card. It seems that support of that card format has slipped based on all of the users reporting problems with cameras using that type of card.

  • How to use Photoshop CC with Elements Organizer 12

    Hi!
I have Photoshop CC and Elements Organizer 12. However, whenever I choose to edit my photos with Photoshop CC, they don't show up as "Edit in Progress" in Organizer. When I save the photos from Photoshop CC, my changes don't update in Organizer. However, Photoshop CC is an option in the Editor menu in Organizer, so Organizer knows that Photoshop CC exists.... Whenever I edit using Elements Editor, everything works as normal. I'm paying money for CC and I can't use it, so I really hope there's a solution!

    Hi Balin,
Did you ever find a solution to this.  I'm using Elements 11 with CC 2014 and having the exact same frustrating problem.  It's so bad I revert to using Elements editor most times now.  I rely heavily on organiser for my 50k catalog.

  • Using Image Shack with iPhoto '08

Hi, I just recently purchased a MacBook Pro (will be doing up-to-date; I was fully aware ) and I have a question about iPhoto '08. When I go to upload pictures to Image Shack I used to (iLife 2005) go to finder, then pictures, the iphoto library, then 2007, then to the file, select it, and upload. With '08 it is no more. I only have the option of selecting all 11 GB of iPhoto. Surely there must be a way other than searching the file name to find a photo in the finder!! (I was also wondering if there is a way to use iMovie HD with iLife '08. It is really a huge pain using the new iMovie).
    Thanks a lot!!

See TD's treatis on file access. It describes several methods of accessing files for use outside of iPhoto. There's a 3rd party application,iMedia Browser, that interfaces with iPhoto, Aperture and any folder on the HD for viewing and selecting photos, i.e. Option-drag the photo to copy it to the the desktop.
    Do you Twango?

  • Using photoshop elements with aperture

I recently purchased and installed Aperture 1.5. I have yet to import my photos. I plan on keeping my photos on an external drive. The drive is shared with a windows laptop. I have about 5k of photos. Most of the time, the edits I make will only be colour correction and cropping, so Aperture will be the software of choice. For some photos I need to manipulate backgrounds, or cut out shapes, etc and drop them into other photos. I don't believe Aperture will do this.
So I'm wondering how to handle the photos I need to use Photoshop Elements 4.0 (Windows). Can I make the background changes, cut outs, etc. in Photoshop, save the changed image on the external harddrive and then import the reference to this image into Aperture?
    mac mini

It seem to me that you have two separate issues to deal with.
First, using PSE4 as editor. The whole power of Aperture is in its digital asset manager. In other words, if you edit files in PSE4, then it will need to be imported into Aperture (referenced or otherwise). While it can be stacked, it will be a separate file, whereas if a version is created within Ap, then it is not a separate master file. Nothing wrong with it as long as you know that, and are willing to live with multiple masters of the same image.
Second, sharing an external drive-based image with XP laptop. Clearly you will need to make your Ap library a referenced master library. This also means that you will have to back up the file separately from using Vault (Vault will backup your referenced previews and versions but not your master files). Do you have this connected and working now? If not, pay attention to the external disk format for compatibility issue. I have MBP and Dell desktop that shares an external drive.
All that said, did you consider creating a logical directory/folder structure on your external HDD and use the Organizer that comes with PSE/XP? It is a quite nice program and will allow for PSE editing in an integrated manner. Not sure what you are gaining by using Ap, other than stacking feature.

I restarted the macbook pro and i didn't resolve the situation.  Is anyone else having this issue?

Are you getting that message window after clicking on the "+" button to access your Contacts?
That's what happens to me.  I know of now way to fix it.
My workaround is to create a new message in Messages and drag the photo from the iPhoto window into the message section of a new message and use the "+" button there to get the address to use

  • Trouble using Photoshop CC with Surface Tablet with Pen input.

I installed Creative Cloud in my Windows Surface Pro 8.1 Tablet. The software works well, but I am unable to use Photoshop with the pen input device provided with the tablet. I'm trying to draw freehand using the Pencil command in Photoshop, but the pen only draws diagonal lines from the left edge of the drawing. This does not happen when I use the computer's mouse, with which I can draw freehand as usual, no problem. The pen device also works well with Adobe Illustrator. I installed all the available updates. I would appreciate any help.

There are supposed to be new software announcements tomorrow...  I'd watch to see whether what you're hoping to do will be better supported.

  • Why can't I use Snapfish anymore with iPhoto 08? I cannot see the library.

I recently upgraded to iPhoto (iLife 08) now when I try to upload pics to snapfish it cannot see the folder. I know it is there cause I see it in Finder. It shows all other folders but the iPhoto folder is invisible. Does anyone know a setting or a way that I can utilize photo developing other than the proprietary ones for Apple?
Please help. I feel like I've been swindled. (Seems Like something Microsoft would do)
    Jeff

    Jeff
You haven't been swindled, no one is forcing you to do anything.
With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
It has never been the correct procedure to root through the iPhoto Library Folder - in fact on every version the documentation has expressly stated that you should never do so.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
All of these are faster and safer than rooting around in the iPhoto Library Folder
You might also check if Snapfish have updated their plug-in for iPhoto yet? If Snapfish haven't bothered to update their plug-in, you might want to check out many of the other services that have. Or are supported by an app like PictureSync. So, nothing proprietary there.
    Regards
    TD

  • Anyone use Time Capsule with Iphoto or Itunes

    If so any issues.
What is the overall consensus with Time Capsule...good bad.

I'm using a 1 TB Time Capsule to run my wireless network and for storage as well.
Honestly, it *****. I came on here to post about if anyone could help me and saw your post. For storage it's incredibly slow, especially with iPhoto, it's completely ridiculous. Other things aren't that bad, like documents and such things. I think it runs my wireless network pretty good, but iPhoto and iTunes not so much.
If there's anyone that has some ideas as to why it would run so slow or what the problem is that would be some greatly appreciated help. I thought TC was supposed to be this "all in one" deal...
