Using PhotoShop CS2: should i adjust my display colours?

I've never had to consider this before, but seeing my images on a pc made me wonder:
I have a lot of slides that I used to teach a course in photography, about 15 years ago. They are photos of images in books, mostly taken on tungsten slide film because of the lighting I used. The colour of the slides themselves is still very good.
I scanned the slides with my Epson (Perfection 3490 photo scanner). The scans of slides of black and white images are fine (probably because I set the scanner to grayscale), but most of the colour images have a reddish cast to them.
I opened them in PS CS2 and did some colour correction (levels, curves, replace colour, whatever worked)... did some at home on my iMac, and others at school on the pc (don't know what kind, but a flat screen monitor). I noticed that some of the ones i had opened at home, but hadn't corrected, looked much better on the pc, and didn't need as much correction as I thought.
Then tonight, i opened up (on the iMac) the ones i corrected at school and they look washed out and wimpy. Yet, the contact sheet that i printed (Epson stylus colour 880, on glossy paper) shows almost the correct colour, but not at all like the wimpy image on screen.
Should I be making some changes in my display, in System Preferences? I have it at the imac default, with 1.8 gamma and D65. Or should I make some changes to PS's colour settings?
(FYI, when i upload pictures off my camera, what i see on screen is pretty much what i get on the paper, but I don't print very often)
(and: when i open these scanned images I get the 'no colour profile ' message and i tell the app not to colour manage)
More FYI: i need these images for a new photo course I'm teaching, adding them to powerpoint instead of projecting slides, and would really like the images I show to be the correct colour, but if what I see at home isn't what i show at the school, I'll have problems. (The school i'm presenting this at is not the one I'm teaching at currently so I can't check it out ahead of time)
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you
Eliz
iMac 17", Intel Core Duo , 512 Ram, 160 GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have it at the imac default, with 1.8 gamma and D65.
That's the main issue with the images looking washed out on the Mac. In Windows, the default gamma is a much darker 2.2. Change your Mac's display profile to match that gamma setting and the images should look much closer to how you see them in Windows.
The scans of slides of black and white images are fine (probably because I set the scanner to grayscale), but most of the colour images have a reddish cast to them.
Your scanner needs to be profiled to get the correct color for items you scan. Check to see if your scanner came with any. Although I don't know if the Epson software supports ColorSync. If it does, using the correct input scanner profile will give you much better color. Assuming you have accurate profiles.
when i open these scanned images I get the 'no colour profile ' message and i tell the app not to colour manage)
That's an issue. Profiles are very important in RGB. They let color management software (Kodak in Windows, ColorSync in the Mac OS) know what to do with the image when you open it. That is, when the source and destination profiles don't match (both the monitor and image profiles), the software knows how to alter the image values so the picture looks close to the same on one computer as another. With no profiles embedded, ColorSync can't determine the original color spaces used when you created them in Windows.
If you can, you could set up an action in Photoshop on the Windows side to open each file and save them with an embedded profile. Which would be whatever your current working color space in Photoshop is. When you then open them on the Mac, Photoshop will know what to do with them to make the color appear the same. A second benefit is that some (not all) web browsers are aware of profiles. Safari is one. So even if your files have a gamma of 2.2, and a person visiting your web site has their monitor set to a 1.8 gamma, Safari can adjust the color of the images on the fly to have them view correctly by knowing the difference between the embedded image profiles and the user's monitor settings. It's not perfect, but works pretty well.

I take photos of clothing for a on-line seller.  I have been using a Nikon D-200 which seems not to like the various blues of jeans. When I adjust the color of the the jeans, it of course changes the skin color. How could I isolate the skin for color correction. Any ideas would be much appreciated

Hi John, Thank you for the tip, I will practice the methods you suggest.

You've almost answered your own question.  You'll need to "isolate" the skin areas in your photograph(s).  This is a tedious process that takes some getting used to.  I tend to use the "lasso" tool, but you could use something like the "magic wand" tool.  If it's the jeans you want to manipulate, you'll have to "select" them separately.  I'd get the selections and then save them separately ( Selections > Save Selections ).  You might want to post this in the Photoshop section of these forums and see what they come back with over there.  Up until now, it sounds like you're color correcting the entire photograph, so nice blues, but not so nice skin tones.  Makes sense to isolate them from eachother, no?

There is no free version of CS2.  There is only a special version of CS2 available for people who purchased it and need to reinstall it.

  • How do I straighten images using Photoshop CS2?

Can someone please tell me how I straighten images like horizons and buildings using Photoshop CS2?
I run the software under Windows XP
    Thank you.

What I do is press Ctrl-T which activates Free Transform. I press Ctrl-" which turns on the grid. I can then rotate the file to correct a drooping horizon, or I can Right-Click on the image to activate the contextual menu, and select Skew. In that mode, I can grab a corner and drag it up or down, right or left, to shift or tilt the image.
Another way to level horizons is to use the Measure tool and from the menu, <Image>, <Rotate Canvas>, <Arbitrary>. You use the Measure tool to draw a line from one part of the horizon to another. When you click Arbitrary you'll get a little dialog. Click <OK> and the image rotates. You'll need to deal with cropping next since your image no longer fills the corners.

  • I work for a funeral home that has used Photoshop CS2 for years.

I work for a funeral home that has used Photoshop CS2 for years.  Within this program, we were able to upload a background "file" with themes - i.e., spring flowers, fall leaves, etc.  We would scan in pictures given to us by the deceased's family and "place" these on top of the background slide.  We then used a software program, Nero, to create a slide show with music to play during the viewing.  I've spent some time looking over the products and do not see one that will allow us to continue this very simple practice.  I would appreciate the opportunity to speak to someone about this.  Thank you.

Newer versions of Photoshop have new feature that CS2 does not have. However CC 2014 like CS2 does not have a slide show with sound feature.  I have a Windows 7 Pro system. Have CS2, CS6, CC and CC 2014 installed.  You need and Updated CS2 Installer to install CS2 on windows.  CS2 is a 32 bit Photoshop there is no CS2 version that will run on new Mac computers their 64 Bit OS offered no 32bit options.
A $10 a month subscription will keep up to date with the latest Photoshop.  Your other option is to buy CS6 for $700.  CS6 is no longer supported it just marketed as is.

  • I use photoshop cs2 - When i use the sketch filter - photocopy on a jpg/psd it comes up plain white (most of the time)

I use photoshop cs2 - When i use the "sketch filter - photocopy option" on a jpg/psd it comes up plain white (most of the time). Once in a while it works..   Can anyone give me a hint on how to fix this or a hint on what I'm doing wrong.

Those filters work best when the foreground and background colors in the toolbox are different.
Try pressing the D key on your keyboard to set the defaults of foreground Black and background White and then try the Filter>Sketch>Photocopy.

  • Anyone having problems using Photoshop CS2 in emulator mode?

I am about to purchase a new iMAC 20 and I'm concerned about being able to use Photoshop on this machine.
Anyone having a good experience with that setup?
    Thanks,
    Lou

Thanks really appreciate the response. I will be getting mine with an additional 2GB so I'm hoping it runs as fast as possible given that RAM limitation. I'm disappointed that there is a 2GB limit since I was hoping to buy a machine with at least 4GB. But my only other option was a G5 and I couldn't see spending the money for a fully blown G5 when the newer iMAC may serve me just fine. The higher end PCs are just as expensive anyway and I don't want to stay with PCs - need a change!
Most of what I do is photo editing and presentation. I'm a photographer so I need to have lots of good processing software for working on photos and creating slideshows, albums, etc. I have been a little concerned as to the ability of the iMAC for this kind of work. But, so far the people I know who have them really like them.
    Thanks,
    Lou

  • How to edit existing gif file using photoshop (CS2)

    Hello Forum,
I have some gif images that I have used for creating tabs on a
web page. I downloaded these images from somewhere, and did not create them
myself. I would like to change the color of these gif files.
They are a nice image, with a gradient applied at the top, and I have a left side gif for the tab as well as an "over" image set for the tab(s) as well.
I use the images in a css file to display the tabs on a web page.
The gradient is across the top of the tab, which is a lighter color, almost going to white, and the rest of the tab is a light blue, with left and right top a slight rounded corner. I would like to preserve the gradient appearance, but change the light blue theme to an almost black (#333333) color.
How can I do this in photoshop?
    Thanks,
    eholz1

    Hi All
I would like to create an action in CS2 to resize an image to e.g 600 x ? pixels and then save for web at max 149kb .
Any clues? I've tried a few different files of different file sizes?(possible cause here) and always end up with different results when using my actions or the image processor.
Is this at all possibleto accomplish in a single step?
Let me elaborate more. On a particular forum where post we are limited to 600 x? pixels and file size no greater than 150 kb. When creating this action in CS2 with different file sizes one lands up with files ranging from 70kb (not as good for viewing) to 149kb(perfect size)or 357kb?(way too big). I'd like to have as close to <150kb for ALL files in the "action"
Is this possible without getting into scripting?
    Thanks
    Don

  • Hello guys, could some one please explain the best process using Photoshop CS2 to cut out the picture from a background?

    Hello,
My name might be photoshopking, but I am still a newbie trying to learn
I am trying to present footwear on my website and the problem is all of my images need a white background. Because of this, I have to constantly remove the background detail from photos on the net which I currently just use the Magic Wand Tool which isnt great. I seem to find the edges are pixelated and blurry.
Would someone on the forum please be able to give me an example using a photo from my website about how to remove the background properly? This would massively help.
I am really struggling with this image: http://traineraddict.com/wp-content/uploads/nike-fragment-design-roshe-run-ld-1000-sp-692x 461_c.jpg

when ever I have to change the background i usually use the pen tool and that always seemed to work well  for me i just have to take my time and it turns out fine and there is always YouTube if you are a visual learner hoped i helped

  • Using LR2 w/ Photoshop CS2 and Camera Raw 3.7

    I am using Photoshop CS2 and Camera Raw 3.7 on a Mac G4, OS X 10.4.11.
I am about to install my upgrade to Lightroom 2. Is this a bad idea?
I have read about some compatibility issues re Camera Raw, and I have also read about how to solve the issue of exporting the keywords.
Will this keyword issue fix work on my system?
What are the real-world practical implications of still having Camera Raw 3.7? I usually adjust images in Lightroom, then any further adjustment is done in Photoshop (not CR). So is the only downside going to be that if I revisit the image in Camera Raw, the adjustments will not show up? Or will it also not show up in Bridge?? And if it is only in CR, is it that the image does not have the adjustments; or does it show the adjusted image, but has just all the sliders zeroed out?
I am hot to install LR2, but I want to make sure that I am not going to open a can of worms. And yes, I could buy PS CS4 (which would get me CR 4.5), and I would like to, but I don't have a G5. And I cannot afford to buy a new desktop computer right now.
Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks.
    Dean Abramson

    >so is the LR version of RAW as good as the one in CS3?
It's far better as it has local adjustments and such. Lightroom is more equivalent to the ACR in CS4. To make changes you make to images in ACR outside Lightroom show up in Lightroom, you need to sync the metadata. ACR does not write the changes to RAW images to the Lightroom database, but it writes it into xmp sidecars either right next to the RAW file or embedded into it. So Lightroom has no idea you did anything until you specifically ask it to check for updated metadata.
Note that trying to work with both bridge/ACR and Lightroom on the same set of data will inevitably make you lose data or edits at some point as you're dealing with a synchronization issue, so be careful.

  • Photoshop CS2 not working after 10.6.7 update? program error!

Could not complete your request because of a program error. I opened an image RGB and wanted to save it as a CMYK.
Save as and entered new name... thats it! Then the error popped up. The only thing that has changed is the update!
    Please help.

If you updated to 10.6.7 then you should (go to your Apple menu at the far left and) check for updates.
There was a problem with some types of Fonts that has been fixed by the Snow Leopard Font update:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1377
However, always wait after an OS update (true of Windows too) and see if it causes any problems with 3rd-party software, etc. - PRIOR to updating your system   And always, always have a full, known-good backup before you update. Especially for any computer that is used for business purposes !
Last but definitely not least, you should know that Adobe CS2 is a Power-PC only application (circa G4 and G5 processors, before Apple moved to Intel processors), and requires Rosetta (PowerPC emulation).
So you should consider any CS2 application running at all, as fairly miraculous.
CS3 was released four years ago, and provided the first Intel-native ("Universal Binary") versions of the CS-suite applications.
Mac OS 10.6 only runs on Intel-based Macs (ie: Intel processor required).
If you are using Photoshop CS2 for any revenue-generating purposes, then it is (and was) incumbent upon you to properly allocate and budget for
upgrades and you should - nay, must - be running a more current version of the software. If your budget does not allow for newer Adobe CS, then you should have kept a legacy system that can run an older Mac OS, and understand that your workflow is living on borrowed time - and you had best keep several old Macs that can still run an older Mac OS and run your CS2 natively.
In no way shape or form is CS2 supported under Mac OS X 10.6 - certainly not in any official way by Adobe !
You could also be irate about not being able to use your 8-track tape player in your brand new car. I'm exaggerating but not too much.
Please read Adobe's response regarding CS3 (not CS2) and 10.6/Snow Leopard:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2009/08/adobe_snow_leopard_faq.html
With all of this in mind, you should know that your frustrations with Apple and the unsupported and not-recommended interaction of CS2 and 10.6 are misguided. Best of luck to you !
