Using Photoshop in layered menu
Fellow DVDSP menu builder: please advise.
In Photoshop, I built my menu with background with several layers with text, and a light blue START (text) to act as a button. Another layer, when selected START (activated) the word START should turn white. When looking at the menu in photoshop, I see all my colors as I built them. When importing into DVDSP as assets (using a layered menu), the photoshop file I built does not show the light blue START but it shows only white START, why is this? Is there a lost in translation while importing? Please assist.

You're welcome, k chen, but be careful. Some clients are very picky about fonts.
The layered menu method lets you basically use any graphic element you want, which can then be replaced with any other graphical element, of the same relative size, for the selected and activated states. So, for example a blue frowny face can be replaced with a multicolored happy face. Or, more specifically to your project, a nonstandard font can change colors. But, you lose reliability, player compatibility, and responsiveness, not to mention audio and video motion background capability.
An overlay menu, which is the standard for commercially produced dvds, is best used to add a graphic element to your menu, rather than replace or alter one that's already there, e.g. an arrow that appears next to a menu item to show that it's selected. What you lose in graphical flexibility, you gain in performance speed, reliability, compatibility. And you can have a video background and audio.
That's why overlay menus are the industry standard.

Photoshop CS2 layered menu compressed by DVDSP4 problems....
Oh wise ones,
I've made a layered menus in PS CS2.. i have also imported them into After Effects 7 to make transitional clips (through the colour white) between the different menus. The problem i have is that DVDSP4 compresses the video and the PS file differently. So that they don't match exactly when the videos run into the layerd menus. The compression has lost it's sharpness in the layered menu but it's perfect in the video clip. :-$
I have changed the encoding settings to max in DVDSP4 with no joy. Any ideas on how to matchup the same file in the video and layered menus?
thanks in advance...unfortunately the design doesn't allow for standard menus at present.. although i like the concept of a still frame as a video in the background. The problem seems to be that the text (flattened) in the layered files (I'm using 18 pt Eurostile) ends up being compressed and missing some of the font.
I have tried different fonts and sizes up to 20pt. But still the problem exists.
The PSD has to be 8 bit.... text objects aren't allowed in layered menus nor are text with the buttons... i've run out of ideas :-$ -
Using Photoshop images as menu tabs
I have created a design of several hands in Photoshop. I would like to use each hand as a menu tab that will 1). change color on rollover, 2). show new graphics for subpages, and 3). link each to the respective pages.
Any suggestions on the best way to accomplish this?

You can use default menu or create manual.
With Default Menu :
- Change Menu type > All Pages
- Select Individual Menu Item > Fill with image > Define states
- Select individual sub menu item > Fill image > Define states
With Manual Menu , it would be similar steps with only difference that you would need to create the menu items and sub menu items , then link them to pages.
You can link them by selecting the pages to link from hyperlink drop down.

Are there any problems using transitions with a layered menu
I am creating a DVD using layered Photoshop files for the menus. I know there are many issues when doing this.
I have 2 questions.
Will creating a 3 state button (normal, rollover, select) cause more problems than a 2 state button?
Can I use the menu trasitions with a layered Photoshop menu?
ThanksI don't know of many "issues". In fact i think using photoshop files is a standard practice.
The only issue i can see from having a 3 state button is using an overlay in the normal state might create some distortion in your button, but other than that there can be some great advantages to using all three states like an overlay mask.
Yes you can use the transitions. One of the best ways to find out is to give it a try. -

For two days in two different locations that only happens in some documents when you reopen the job done no more .. Example 6 channels on the facts I see only one ..

Photoshop hangs for nearly 15 seconds when using Layer > Group Layers or Layer Palette > Group from Layers commands. NOT on creating new group and creating layers and drag-n-dropping layers into group manually in Layer Palette. Got a UI design file with nearly 800 layers and lot of groups. This doesn't occur in smaller files. Using OS X Mavericks, Photoshop CC 2014.2.2, Mid 2014 15-inch Retina Macbook Pro.
I understand that the solution would be just to cut the file into smaller files and design each UI view in a separate file but that would be painful. And it does not seem to be a very hard task to just group layers.Does the document also have a lot of layer comps?
And can you post that document or send me a copy of it so we can see exactly why it is hanging? -

Working in iPhoto
Want to edit image using photoshop elements
Did the following
IPhoto>Preferences>Advanced>Edit Photos: In drop down menu chose in Photoshop Elements
Also control click and chose edit in external editor
Drop down menu edit photos in external program>photoshop Elements
Go to to the image I'm working on --- selected the image, the clicked on edit. When nothing happened I double clicked the image. Still elements didn't open. Then I opened the Elements editor, went back to iphoto and tried the entire process again. the photo still didn't open on Elements 13 for editing.
I have 3 Elements 13 books as well as looked on line--all my references say the exact same thing ---- iPhoto>Preferences>advanced>edit in external program>photoshop Elements
I uninstalled and reinstalled both iPhoto as well as Elements.
I spoke with application technical support. There appears to be nothing wrong with my copy of iPhoto. However there is no support from Adobe. I waited for over 1.5 hours for chat support several days ago, and finally gave up.You are probably choosing the obvious file rather than the correct file as the PSE editor. The actual editor is hidden away inside the Support Files folder. The PSE file at the top level of the PSE folder in Applications is just an alias for the welcome screen and what you're describing is exactly what happens when you choose that. You want this one:

I am using Photoshop CC2014 15.00. In the pop-up menu for the Fill command there is a place for Scripted patterns. Within that part, the tree and the picture frame are grayed.
Why? I've seen demonstrations on how to use the feature but mine doesn't work. I checked the updates and I have the current version.
Thanks. LMI am running CC 2014.2.1 and I've updated to Yosemite. Not seeing tree or frame as an option in the menu. Coworker still on Mavericks has it.

I have been using Photoshop Elements 11 photo merge function. However, the Photomerge panorama function is no longer accessible - it is visible but greyed out on the "enhance" menu. I have tried to reinstall software, but no change.
Click on Expert and the Enhance>Photomerge>Photomerge Panorama should be available

Photoshop freezes when using Auto-Blend Layers - Stack Images
I used to have CS5 on my computer, after which I used the CS6 trial, and I never had any problems when stacking images using Auto-Blend Layers -> Stack Images. However, I recently purchased a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud and after uninstalling the old PS versions and installing Cloud, Photoshop freezes every time I try to stack images.
My computer has very good specs, runs Windows 7, and both the OS and PS are up to date.

I'm working through the Apple Pro Series DVDSP 3 and the lesson requires me to create a layered menu. The picture in the book shows how the rollover is supposed to work--a new image appears when the user rolls over the button. But that doesn't happen. It doesn't even work in the file created by the author. Very frustrating. I've tried restarting DVDSP and that doesn't work. Can anyone help? I'm wondering if my using files from DVDSP 3 is the problem. Shouldn't be since they're just updated automatically I think.

Not sure what may be going on with what you are using - when you say it is not working, in siumlator, in a build file in Apple DVD Player or a burned DVD? (See if the above link and items works) -

You could probably use the 8 point garbage matte in this situation. I personally think the 8-point garbage matte is a bit cumbersome, but it should get the job done.
1. Use the Razor Blade tool to place a cut before and after the shot with the bottle.
2. Select the bottle clip.
3. Press and hold Shift + Option, then drag the bottle clip up one track. This should create a duplicate clip directly above your original clip. (I'll refer to this duplicated clip as bottle2.)
4. Locate the 8-point Garbage Matte filter and apply it to bottle2.
5. Locate the Gaussian Blur filter and apply it to bottle2.
6. Control click bottle1, and uncheck the "Clip Enable" setting from the shortcut menu. This will disable that clip.
7. Double click bottle2 to load it into the Viewer. Then select the Filter tab.
8. For the Garbage Matte filter, you'll notice 8 rows of numbers, these are the current locations for the control points, which you should be able to see in the Canvas. Start with point #1, and click the "+" button in the filters area, then in the Canvas click and drag to move the point. When you release the mouse button, you'll need to reclick the "+" button in the filters tab. Repeat these steps until you've isolated the bottle.
9. Feather the edge of the matte.
10. Adjust the Blur amount.
11. Reenable bottle1. Playback the clip and make any necessary adjustments.
Depending on your experience with Motion, you might also want to try sending bottle1 to Motion, then use Motion to control the layering. -
How do you apply a Motion Video Asset as a button on a layered Menu?

I am trying to create a layered menu with 2 x Motion Video Asset's as buttons (toggling between the two buttons for selection & activation).
When I add a menu - The motion video asset is perfectly displayed as a button in the menu screen. But when I add a Layered Menu and drag my motion video asset across, it does not show the video...it shows an empty square/button in the menu screen. When the drop-down menu pops up when dragging the video asset across, I choose 'create button & track' as when I choose the other option, the 'templates' window pops up and I have my own layered menu created by Photoshop, so I don't want to use the templates. I created a Layered-format DVD for my feature film last year. I really dug the simplicity of exporting full Photoshop files/layers straight into DVDSP, but the delayed response in navigation is absolutely agonizing.
I am retooling my DVD design for a second edition and, while I'm at it, am considering converting the menu from a Layered to Standard format. Approximately how impossible is this to accomplish?
Any advice/tricks/warnings are greatly appreciated!

SeanAs well as Shawn's link (good article, btw), you can also use a layered photoshop file and create a standard overlay menu from it. You may only need to add a menu and use the photoshop asset that you've got, if it is set up correctly.
DVDSP has three ways of making a menu - the standard overlay, the photoshop layer and this hybrid kind of method which lets you use a layer based psd file to create a standard overlay.

Essentially, you'll be using a series of layers designated to become the menu background, and a single layer to be the overlay. This is very different to using a layer based menu, which allows you to set different layers as the various button states, adding different information on each layer as you see fit.
Using a layered menu (as opposed to a layer based menu... sigh... see how hard it is to find the right words sometimes?) will give you a standard overlay menu when the disc is built - the navigation is fast, you can have audio. As you have already found, using a layer based menu is slow, and can;t have audio or video in it.
Now, whether or not you'll need to do much work in Photoshop will depend on how you've created the original asset. -

Yes, you can create layered menus.
I find doing it in Photoshop best.

But DVDs use highlghts, with their limitations, so I wonder what you intend? Are you doing bluray?
