Using Photoshop layers in InDesign?

Hi all, I'm having much more difficulty finding a solution than I thought I would.  Any help is greatly appreciated!  I have a designer that has put a magazine spread together in Photoshop.  It has the background, graphics, and text.  I'm looking to place or import the psd file into InDesign and have the layers be available.  I know that I can turn the visibility on and off, but I want to be able to use InDesign to modify the text that was a text layer in the psd file, and to move individual layers around without needing to go into Photoshop each time.  With all the propaganda on Adobe's site about integration, I thought this would be easy to accomplish so I'm probably missing something obvious.
To save people looking for the same answer in the future from reading unnecessary posts, let me just state:
Yes, I did search other forums and yes, I did Google it
I know I can edit it in Photoshop and update the link in InDesign, but that's not what I'm trying to accomplish
I know Photoshop isn't desktop publishing software, but let's pretend
TIA for any help.  BTW, using CS6.

There could be plugin or script to achieve this but can't be done natively with InDesign and Photoshop.

  • Slow Using Photoshop and InDesign

We have several 2GHz C2D Mac minis with 2GB RAM running Leopard. The users are complaining that using Photoshop CS4 and InDesign CS2 is slow. Is this to be expected? Would it be better to upgrade the PowerMac G5's we also have to Leopard, and use the software on that instead? Thanks.

Photoshop and InDesign both need a lot of room in RAM to run at a decent speed. Between just what the OS and Photoshop need, 2 GB of RAM isn't enough. You're getting a lot of page outs to disk in order to run these apps. Even worse if you have both PS and InDesign running at the same time. You really need at least 4 GB of RAM to see good performance.
So yes, since the Mac Minis can't have more than 3 GB of RAM installed, you'd be much happier with the performance of these apps on the G5s. But you'll still have to have more than 2 GB of RAM installed, or you essentially won't see any difference. You would want to have at least 4 GB of RAM installed on the G5s.

  • I have CS4 and use photoshop, illustrator,

I have CS4 and primarily only use Photoshope, illustrator, and Indesign running on an iMAC 10.8.5.   I want to upgrade to Apple's OSX Yosemite, but am reluctant to do so, as I keep reading that people are incountering "error" issues with the CS4 version.   Has Adobe addressed these problems?  I don't have the need to migrate to the Creative Cloud and CS4 does everything I need.

Adobe hasn't addressed those "issues" and never will. Nobody goes back to 8 year old software just because it's no longer compatible with whatever Apple have gotten in their heads with Yosemite. Simply stick with what you have.

  • Photoshop Multi Paths on different layers in Indesign

Mac OSX Indesign & Photoshop CS4
Might be a dumb question but...
Is there a way of using a single placed photoshop file in indesign so that the paths can be moved to different layers. Or do you have to duplicate the image onto the different layers and then turn on the paths you wish to use on that layer.
Say for instance if you have a photoshop file with say 3 layers or 3 paths can you tell indesign to put each of those 3 layers or paths on separte layers in indesign without making 3 copies of the image in indesign.
If this can be done does anyone know of a good tutorial for doing this.

I’m nor sure what you want to do with the Photoshop paths, so I’ll leave anything path specific alone until you clarify.
But if you want different layer comps of the image to appear on different layers you will need three instances of the file in your Indesign file.
I think we’ll be able o better understand your question if you tell us what you want without assuming anything about how to get there first.

Generally this should work, but of course there may be occasional compatibility issues across the different programs and their different versions.

  • Using Photoshop in layered menu

Fellow DVDSP menu builder: please advise.
In Photoshop, I built my menu with background with several layers with text, and a light blue START (text) to act as a button. Another layer, when selected START (activated) the word START should turn white. When looking at the menu in photoshop, I see all my colors as I built them. When importing into DVDSP as assets (using a layered menu), the photoshop file I built does not show the light blue START but it shows only white START, why is this? Is there a lost in translation while importing? Please assist.
    Many thanks in advance.

You're welcome, k chen, but be careful. Some clients are very picky about fonts.
The layered menu method lets you basically use any graphic element you want, which can then be replaced with any other graphical element, of the same relative size, for the selected and activated states. So, for example a blue frowny face can be replaced with a multicolored happy face. Or, more specifically to your project, a nonstandard font can change colors. But, you lose reliability, player compatibility, and responsiveness, not to mention audio and video motion background capability.
An overlay menu, which is the standard for commercially produced dvds, is best used to add a graphic element to your menu, rather than replace or alter one that's already there, e.g. an arrow that appears next to a menu item to show that it's selected. What you lose in graphical flexibility, you gain in performance speed, reliability, compatibility. And you can have a video background and audio.
That's why overlay menus are the industry standard.

J3liu1 I would recommend reviewing the installation log files for the specific error message which you are facing.  You can find details on how to locate an interpret your installation log files at Troubleshoot installation with install logs | CS3, CS4.  You are welcome to post any specific errors you discover to this discussion.

  • 'Paste remembers layers' between Indesign and Photoshop (CS5)?

    Hello,
Is it possible to preserve layers from Indesign to Photoshop and copy them all in one copy/paste rather than copying each layer individually?
Thanks in advance for any help on this.
    Cheers,
    Leah =)

Not as far as I know.
Should no one else have better info and if the task is a frequent one you may want to look into Scripting for automating it.

  • MISALIGNMENT PROBLEMS USING "LOAD FILES INTO PHOTOSHOP LAYERS" FROM BRIDGE CC

I'm having a persistent problem which technical support was unable to resolve after being on the phone with them for 1.5 hrs. I was told the issue would be escalated... That was five days ago, and I've heard nothing.
Here is the problem: In ACR working on a bracketed group of five images shot from a solid tripod in Bridge CC. I carefully synchronize all parameters incl. crop, transform, exposure, etc. Then I go to Tools / Photoshop / Load files into Photoshop layers, and the images open in photoshop in a layered file..., BUT some are knocked out of alignment. Actually they have been cropped slightly smaller than the original file, always by the same number of pixels. Sometimes all layers are affected, sometimes not.
Photoshop CC & Bridge CC are both up to date, as is the camera raw plugin. I’m on a new iMac i7 4-core, OSX 10.9.4. All software was newly downloaded from Adobe two weeks ago. I have reset preferences, reset tools in Photoshop, even uninstalled and reinstalled Bridge CC 6.1.0.115 all to no avail. Any suggestions? I am desperate for some help.

I run Windows 7 Ultimate, I have 2.00GB of RAM with 1.74 usable, and I selected 40 images, each about 2MB.

  • Need to use Photoshop/InDesign on a laptop. Can you recommend one?

I am trying to by a lap top but can't find my way in the djungle. I already have a computer. The lap top is going to be more of a vacation computor, but I need to use Photoshop even during my vacation. I want a small lap top with DVD reader/writer (that isn't the most expensive one).
Some one out there who is using a lap top for Photoshop use and is satisfied with it?

One thing to watch out for:  Get a laptop that has an ATI or nVidia display interface.  A lot of laptops come with Intel graphics accelerators and Intel's display drivers (upon which the Adobe software relies heavily) often cause people problems.

  • Cannot open Photoshop CS4 files using Photoshop 7

Hi - I would be very grateful if anyone has solved this problem before and can help me.
I am trying to send a smallish (5 Mb) layered CMYK Photoshop file from my version (CS4) to someone who is still using Photoshop 7 but they are completely unable to open it. I have saved it using 'Maximize Compatibility' and there are just 3 layers, no fancy layer effects, no layer sets, and each layer has a transparent background. Every time the other person tries to open it (via File -> Open), their Photoshop hangs and they have to force quit. It will open in Graphic Converter but it is then saved as a flattened image which is no good. I'm at my wits' end what to do to get this to open in PS7 - does anyone have any ideas?
    I am using Photoshop CS4 on a Mac Pro, OS X 10.6.3; they are using Photoshop 7 on a G4 867 DP, OS X 10.4.11.
    Thanks very much -
    Deb.

If anyone else should come across this sort of problem, here's the scoop:
It's a metadata parsing bug in Photoshop 7 and CS/8 (version 3-6 no problem, version 9-12 no problem).  It is caused by the history metadata in the file, possibly because of the length of the history, possibly because of the InDesign history bits.  I don't have a MacOS 10.1 system avaialble to debug Photoshop 7 any more, so I can't be positive about the exact cause.  But we know that Photoshop CS2 and later work just fine.
If you wait 30 minutes, Photoshop 7 does eventually load the file.  But that hurts productivity.
The history metadata can't easily be deleted in Photoshop (or ImageReady, Fireworks, etc.).  But if you copy the layers to a new document, the history metadata won't be carried over.  Save the copy, and that copy will work just fine in Photoshop 7 and CS/8.
