Using Photoshop With Aperture-Flattens Layers

I am running into some slight issues when using Aperture 3 and Photoshop CS6.
I have used Aperture 3 for quite some time. As part of my workflow, I use Nik Software plug-ins for quite some time. In order to fully understand the issue, it would be best to understand a bit about my workflow.
After I go out and shoot the images, I download the images onto my internal drive so that the images are managed within the library.
I then proceed to rate the images. When the library is imported all the photos get one star.
I then go in and star photos that deserve a two star rating.
With these photos I take all the two stared photos and use the NIk Define plug-in to decrease the noise of the images. After this process this outputs TIFF files that are placed into my library.
I then make all these new TIFF files that have the noise lessened to three stars.
Previous to my new workflow, I would go from here utilizing the NIk plug-ins and then further rating the images.
New Workflow:
From here I enabled Adobe Photoshop CS6 is an external editor.
I would export the images I would want to work on in Photomatix Pro to my desktop. After using Photomatix, I would open up the file in Photoshop without importing into Aperture.
After all my work is done in Photoshop, I would reimport the photo back into Aperture 3.
While the file was in Aperture 3, I would reopen it in Photoshop.
The file would show as my layers being applied but not shown. I think it was a flattened image file.
What I would like to do:
Be able to reopen with Photoshop photos in my Aperture library but continue preserving the layers from Photoshop.
Would I need to save the files as PSD files in order for this to work? Any thoughts?
Anyhow for device would be appreciated.

Aperture does not handle layers, as far as I know. If you import an image with layers, as tiff or as psd, the layers will be preserved, but not displayed with transparency, since Aperture does only handle RGB. If you export the original (master), your layers will be preserved, but if you adjust the image in Aperture and export the edited version, then the resulting file will no longer have layers, all will be flattened.
If you Aperture only use as a database and not as editor, your approach should work, but if you want to use Aperture's editing tools and export versions, then the layers will be gone.
Sorry to revive this old thread, but I have a follow up question on exact subject...
I have run into the same issue and understand your explanation. I have confirmed that I can import a layered master to Aperture, its layers are preserved and if I export it later the layers are still there.
What I am really surprised about is that if I edit in Photoshop from Aperture, the file opens up in Photoshop, but the layers are not there. Is this right or avoidable?
Thanks

I ordered my Macbook Air with Aperture two years ago. I now have an iMac - can I use that with Aperture in any way? I appreciate that it is a different computer but I am now the end user of both devices and I was just wondering if it was possible.
    Thanks,

The answer would be in your software license agreement for Aperture. However if you cannot locate it you can ask in the Aperture forum, the link for that is:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/professional_applications/aperture
However I believe you can have Aperture installed on two machines however only one may be using it at a time.
On the new iMac launch the Mac App Store - Purchased - look for Aperture and download to your new machine.

  • Using Fotomagico with Aperture

    Hello,
Does anyone have any experience using the slide show program Fotomagico with Aperture? It has a feature where you can access your iPhoto libraries easily to create slideshows but doesn't seem to have the same access to the Aperture libraries. A
Has anyone discovered any workaround for this or do I just have to export images into a folder and use them that way.
    Cheers,

The reason you cannot drag-n-drop right out of Aperture is really quite simple.
It would involve the same steps as you exporting a version.
The photo you see in iPhoto is either the original imported JPG, or a JPG from the imported RAW file, or a modified JPG(if you have made any enhancements/cropping to the image), so dragging and dropping works well there because you are merely copying a file from the filesystem to the application.
IF you could drag-and-drop from Aperture, users would complain that it is too slow, and much slower than silly iPhoto! The reason it would be slow is it would involve a full rendering of a new JPG based on the changes you applied.. this would take just as long as exporting the image the old way.
Ever made a change to an image in iPhoto? When you move to the next it tells you to wait while it regenerates the new stored image. Imagine Aperture doing that! No thanks!
I have used Fotomagico(which IMHO is THE choice for slideshows) with images from Aperture. I make an album either at the project level or the folder(of projects) level and drag in the images I want to use for the slide show. Once I have made those choices I export them all to a folder and point Fotomagico at it. Works great!
I am sure V2 of Aperture will have some sort of slideshow tool built in, but probably not as robust as an external dedicated app like Fotomagico.

  • Using Photoshop with Iphoto

I've set the editing preference to use photoshop as the editor and when I click on a photo and then the edit icon, it launches photoshop but doesn't open the picture in photoshop. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    David

Also, after you get the problem solved, this may be of some help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Anyone using MBA with Aperture?

I'm considering getting an MBA, but (aside from the limited hd space) I'm concerned about how efficiently it will run aperture. If you are a current owner and work with aperture regularly, I would appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

Yes, it is possible. The fan will spin up, but for heavy loads use another solution.

  • Who Uses Applescript with Aperture and Why?

From time to time, I come see Applescript mentioned by Aperture Users. The Apple Support website devotes a few paragraphs.
For an amateur with lots of time. how would Applescript make my experience with Aperture any better? It automates what?

There's also an application that will give you lots of statistics on your Aperture library (lenses used, etc):

I'm pretty sure it uses AppleScript to get the data.

  • Can I use photoshop with out installing other apps for cs6?

can I use photoshop without installing other apps?

    You absolutely can
Usually, Adobe Bridge is automatically installed as a companion app for Photoshop - for example, if you download Photoshop CS6 through Creative Cloud, Bridge will also be installed. But Photoshop can definitely be used as a "stand-alone" application.

  • Using scanner with Aperture

I have just opened Aperture for the first time and I realize that I can´t use my filmscanner (Canoscan FS4000US) with the program.
So is this program really everything I need? Or must i purchase Photoshop as well?

Aperture is never meant to be a Photoshop competitor. It's a great tool for raw convertion and organization, a complete raw workflow application.
To automatically import to Aperture scanned images you can use a hot folder, which imports any image that goes into it. Check the following link for instructions:
    http://www.automator.us/aperture/example-04.html
You can use Image Capture (inside your application folder) for scaning images, and using automator create an action to automatically import them to Aperture.
With your scanner you probably got some scaning software and Photoshop Elements, which is more that enough for simple retouching/cleaning of your scans.

  • Using Macbookpro with Aperture photos on external hard drive

I have now just about filled up my macbook pro. So I am now moving my pictures folder to an external drive. I have never done this before but it looks straight forward. After the transfer I just restart aperature and help it find the library.
But here is the question. I would like to bring my laptop on trips, take pictures, manipulate them in aperture. Then when I get home I would like to put those photos into the external drive.
I am confused about how to do that?

    Bob,
I am currently using MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz with 4 GB DDR2.
Since day one I have used an external portable hard drive that has all images stored on it.
No images are stored on the MacBook.
Currently I am using a portable LaCie 250 GB running with Firewire 800.
Nearly 10,000 images at the present time.
Use a USB 500 GB portable external hard drive for the Vault (backup).
Have had no problems working this way.
I am looking to purchase a larger portable LaCie (500 GB) soon.

  • How to use iMovie with Aperture Library from an external drive?

    Hey,
    Some problems:
    1. My first video, I stored the project on my own laptop and used the library from the HD. This seems to give some problems, but I now figured out I have to consolidate the media etc. so now my files don't get missing after unplugging the harddrive. I figured it would be a better idea to make all new projects on the HD, so I have everything in place all the time. BUT. look at the picture: there seems to be something wrong with the way iMovie recognizes the aperture library: i'ts not listed in the events library under the HardDisk (named Passport) but under my own drive... ??? (+ I don't understand the idea of events when I have my aperture library: Do I need to make events for all projects I make? how is this possible when the library is not in the correct position?)
    2. I made a movie, but I'm unable to export a large/high quality version of this project. That's why I want to move my project to the HD and then open it on my partners Mac Book Pro to make a good export. Unfortunately, his macbook doesn't recognize the files and the files can't be opened in iMovie... (files stay gray and unclickable)
    To sum it all up:
I want the best way to work with this set-up: mac book air, external drive with all my files and iMovie.  And I want to be able to open the project on a different computer to make high quality exports.

First thing that comes up with videos in your 'picture' library is the videos are always under the full control of the picture library program. Which means Aperture is the keeper and master, and it decides what will be displayed in iMovie's Event Library. If Aperture is having difficulties sometimes it cannot or will not display the videos you are storing there.
Right now, I think the problem is your Aperture Library is on the internal Mac HD, not the external. You would have to move Aperture's Library to the external HD (along with all the pictures and videos). Then try to add the videos back into a project.
In extreme cases I have recommended moving the videos out of the picture library and re-importing them into iMovie Event folders to let iMovie manage it.

  • Using Messages with aperture

Am in a foreign country and have been usingMessages to connect with those back home. Is it possible to use this in Apertuure so that I can send pictures too?

Have you tried dragging an Image (or Images) from the Aperture Browser and dropping in the Messages compose field?  Works for me.
This sends (afaik) a reduced copy of the Preview.  If you want to send a full-size file, you much first create it by exporting from Aperture.  Sending files via Messages is covered in Messaging Help.

  • How do I use iCloud with Aperture?

I want to synchronize the photos I shoot and load on my MacBook in Aperture to my desktop iMac. I've never used iCloud, but the setup instructions says this should work for Aperture users. The instructions say:
"Open iPhoto or Aperture and click the Photo Stream icon in the left column. Then click Turn On Photo Stream."
Well, there is no Photo Stream icon in the left column or anywhere in my Aperture program. What am I missing? Thanks for any help.
    Maria

Maria, have you enabled Photo Stream in the System Preferences > iCloud tab and in Aperture's Preferences?
Does your Aperture version support iCloud? You need at least Aperture 3.2.3
    See: iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences. Click iCloud, then select Photo Sharing.
Turn on Photo Sharing in one of these applications:
iPhoto: Choose iPhoto > Preferences. Click iCloud, then select Photo Sharing.
Aperture: Choose Aperture > Preferences. Click iCloud, then select Photo Sharing.
