Using PhotoStream

I'm having trouble using PhotoStream.    I've used it 3 times to copy photos to iPhoto, but don't have it right.
Today I took some photos with my grandchildren.    And my grandson accidentally took a bunch of screen shots.    I went home and opened iPhoto, and clicked on PhotoStream.   It asked me if I wanted to use Photostream. (It didn't ask me the 2nd time I used it, I wonder why it did this time).     I tried selecting individual photos to move to an event.    As I selected one, the screen refreshed and I saw that I selected a different one.    After about 5 minutes of this nonsense, I had the photos I wanted to select, and I dragged them to events.
Except there was an event with all of my photostream photos, not one with just these photos.    Some of those photos were from previous days.    So I went through and selected individual photos and deleted them.     I have no idea which are the high res photos from my iPhone, and which were the duplicates, so I went to my iPhone and told it not to save the duplicates.   (There must be some way to tell).     Googling, I found that I can delete every photo on PhotoStream, but not individual ones.    I have to decide which of these poor choices is better.    If I have work photos, I'll have to delete all of them.
Then I went to my iPhone and tried to select all of my photos to delete them.   I didn't figure it out, so I tapped on each one individually until they were all selected, and deleted them.    Or maybe I should have plugged my phone directly into my computer and run image capture.
I'm wondering if I should rename the "Jan 2012 Photo Stream" event so I don't add to it next time I have photos in January, it will leave that event alone.   I don't want all of the photos I already deleted from it to show up again.
Do you recommend any different procedures to make this "just work"?

Check your iPhoto preferences, you likely already have Photostream set to add its photos to events, Photostream creates an event for each month. A Photo can be in only one event, but as many albums as you wish. It sounds as though you may not fully understand events.

How did the photos that you want to copy off get on the iPad ? To copy photos to your computer that were taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites then see this page - on a Mac you should be able to use iPhoto, Aperture or Image Capture
To copy photos that were originally synced from a computer you will need a third-party app on your iPad such as Simple Transfer which can copy them off via your wifi network. But as photos are 'optimised' when they are synced to the iPad, any that you then copy back to a computer may not be exactly the same as they originally were on your computer.

I currently have 1,177 photos on my iphone (4s) but it takes up 4.9 GB of space. Why is it so large? I do not use photostream - this is simply within my "Camera Roll". Other than deleting the photos, can someone tell me another solution?

My friend has over 2,000 photos on her iphone and it only used 1.7 GB of space and I know I had at one point over 3,000 photos on my phone and still had space left for more.
Any tips are greatly appreciated!

When you open your camera app, does it say "HDR on" at the top?
HDR photos are better quality but take up much more space.
Also, go to Settings>photos and camera. Scroll down to "keep normal photo". Is it on? This feature saves a normal copy and an HDR copy of every photo you take.
I bet your friend has this feature turned off along with the HDR as well.

Correct.
On an iOS device, new photos you take will be automatically uploaded to your photo stream when you leave the Camera app and are connected to Wi-Fi. Note: My Photo Stream does not push photos over cellular connections.

So far as I am aware, there isn't anywhere you can see a list, but you might get more information from the info feature in iPhoto, either on a Mac or on your iOS device.

Do I have to upgrade iPhoto to use photostream?

Being a bit lazy (and poor) I don't constantly upgrade my software. I upgraded my iMac OS either last year or late 2011 and it is now operating on OSX10.8.4. It is running iPhoto 8.1.2. I bought an iPad later on that year and it looks as if I have to upgrade the iPhoto software on my Mac if I want it to be compatible with Photostream. I would have thought, having essentially purchased iPhoto along with my operating system and given that iPads were selling like hot cakes at the time, that I would get my iPhoto software updated as well. Oh well, looks like I'm wrong and I have to fork out another £11 to get it all working together. Is this correct?

You have iPhoto '09, and Photo Stream requires iPhoto '11, so you have to upgrade. Purchase iPhoto in the Mac App Store and then, open System Preferences > iCloud, and mark Photo Stream.
Finally, open iPhoto, and after upgrading the library, select Photo Stream in the sidebar and enable it. You can use Photo Stream. Make a backup of the iPhoto library before upgrading the application, or at least a copy of the library on a different folder

You sound like you're in the high-school debating club.
This seems to be an issue of semantics - when I say "Full screen photo editing (using the full screen for the photo with no compulsory sidebars)", I mean "Full screen photo editing (using the full screen for the photo with no compulsory sidebars)". When you use that phrase, you seem to mean "Not full screen photo editing (not being able to use the full screen for the photo with no compulsory sidebars)".
While you're perfectly free to define black as white, don't be surprised when it causes confusion. Let me spell it out for you as clearly as I can:
In iPhoto 09, you can use the full screen to see and edit your photo.
In iPhoto 11, you cannot.
That is a loss of functionality.
To be honest I have not looked at it in a couple of month - I am genuinely interested in whether the bugs in 11 have been fixed - I'm excited that they have fixed the 10 photo limit - that's certainly progress - the same for the side-by-side comparison editing - although I presume the toolbar bug is still present there?

Why can't I add names when I attempt to use Photostream on my newly updated 4s?

When I try to add names it won't let me. Bear with me I am new to "Photostream"

They used to have a free version that only did complete clones, the paid for version does a diff, much quicker apart from the initial backup.

After using Photostream, I cannot import photos taken by itouch when photostream is off

Before having photostream, I import photo to mac from ipod using iphoto. But after updated photostream, ipod nolonger apprear in iphoto!
Then all photos that is not uploaded into photostream cannot be imported to mac. For PC it may probably be done in the folders, but for mac, no way.
So do I only have one choice: to send them one by one by email? Thanks.

Hye zhwilla, mabey you should sign out of icloud on the devices selected. then turn back on.
Also something to remember, iPhoto automatically downloads photos to events called photostream dec. 2011, etc. so when you do try to copy photos, iPhoto will say it already has downloaded them. Also make sure itunes is running. I assume you have everything updated.

I organise my photos in iPhoto on my iMac and use Photostream to put them on myiPad for a presentation. But they appear on the iPad Photostream in a different order. And I cant seem to be able to then reorder them on the iPad. What's wrong please?

Photostream keeps photos in the order they are added.
Photostream wouldn't be my ideal choice for adding photos to your device for the purposes you mention, since it is intended for sharing your latest photos. I'd be inclined to add the photos as an event or album from iphoto by syncing them either by USB or by wifi.

Images on iPhone don't make the jump to iCloud using Photostream

This has more than likely been raised before, but I need to know why some images just will not get pushed from my iPhone to iCloud via Photostream.
The last couple of days I have been out & about and on each day I have taken approx 35 photos. When I get home, it sits around waiting for a while, then eventually, through the wi-fi, it starts to push the images to iCloud. However, out of say, 35 images, it might push just 30. But it won't be the last 5 that it misses, it will be random images throughout the 35.
This means I then have to upload the missing images (not easy if a lot of images are pretty similar) to Dropbox and add them manually - pain in the a*s.
There seems to be no reason for this. Is there a limit on how many images will upload at once? Why does it miss some and not others? Do you need to be plugged in to the mains and charging fro it to work properly? Or is this just another Apple glitch which will hopefully be resolved in the next iOS update??

You can try resetting it to see if that turns it on, but if it does not work, the iPhone is probably damaged from the fall and you should take it to an Apple Store so that they can have a look and determine if it is repairable. An out of warranty replacement will cost you money but much less than if you had to buy a new phone.

Problems using Photostream on iPad and iPhone.

I'm hoping someone can advise me and solve this problem easily. Not a massive techie so please use layman's terms!
I've had a similar problem to others in that photos on my iPhone were appearing as blank white... Both in the Thumbnail and full screen. I corrected this by using the rotate function and re-saving each photo. The photos now appear correctly in the camera roll but not in photo stream which syncs to my iPad. For obvious reasons I'd really love all the photos to appear correctly on both devices...
Can anyone help?!

Multiple apple IDs with one PC... can we have separate PhotoStream folders/locations?

There are six iphone users in our household. Four are still using the family PC. I have been using PhotoStream ever since it became available (ios5 update?) and I like using it. Can my children also use PhotoStream from their iphones without mixing all of our photos together on the PC? They each have their own Apple ID.
