Using POP/IMAP Mail inside company firewall

The IT at my work place blocks all ports except 80 and 443.
Can I use POP/IMAP accounts over HTTP or HTTPS?

I take it that you want to get personal email while at work which may or may not be okay with your company policy - but that's for you to decide.
A way around it.
I use Oceanic Time Warner RoadRunner as an ISP and it has an option that allows me to access and send email when I am on the road called Web Mail that is accessed from my browser home page (RoadRunner). Mail won't allow you to access your normal mail except for viewing not sending messages when you're not in your local area, so Web Mail takes the place of using Mail. I access it through http.
Your email provider should have something similar with a web address as long as you can access it through your computer at work.

  • Using pop e-mails with BB curve 8530

Hello I need a little help. Had a BB in the past but never needed to use it with my 4 pop e-mail accounts. Just switched from HTC Snap to a new BB curve 8530 and it does not seem to do what I need it to. On the snap it would check for new messages from all 4 pop accounts hourly and when doing so any new unread messages on the pop server would go to the snap phone and any deletions that were made on the pop server were removed from the snap phone also. I am sure BB has a way to do this but I am not seeing where or how to set this up. So far it seems I have to delete it on my BB to delete it off both but it will not take deletions from the pop and remove them from the BB. Please help, I have so many e-mails I have to manage and it is making me want to go back to the Snap since this is causing a lot more work.
Also, is it normal for PDF files to take a while to load and become clear to view as e-mail attachments? I seem to be waiting a while in comparison to the snap I had prior.
    Much thanks!!!

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Concerning reconciliation between server and the BB, that will be governed by this KB. In nearly all cases, it sounds like you should be able to have 2-way reconciliation of deleted items...the KB includes a link to another article that discusses how to properly configure for that.
Concerning how long it takes to open and render an attachment, your prior device was likely downloading the entire attachment at the time it downloaded the email. BB's do not retrieve the attachment until you request it, so you must wait while it performs that download. I would guess that the actual time it takes either device to obtain the attachment is the same -- it's just that with the BB you are there watching it and therefore noticing it.
    Best!

  • Eliminating Junk Mail on Iphone using an IMAP mail server

    Hello!
Doesn't sound like there is a fix for this, but its always worth asking...,
I currently have my own IMAP email server with my company on an XServe. When I receive mail on my Iphone it bypasses all my post-server junk mail rules on my powerbook Apple Mail app, and loads up my inbox. I don't keep my powerbook on all the time to filter it before I open it on my Iphone, although I do use Apple Mail as my mail client.
Is there any way to echo the junk mail rules from my Laptop to my Iphone. The volume of junk I receive after makes the Iphone's mail app cumbersome. I also need to filter out web order confirmations for my business, which normally go right to a selected folder using a mail rule.
    Thanks!

Is there any way to echo the junk mail rules from my Laptop to my Iphone.
Yes, by leaving the Mail.app on your PowerBook launched and running actively accessing your account for new messages where a junk mail filter and any rules are available. With an IMAP account, all server stored mailboxes are kept synchronized with the server automatically with each email client used to access the account. In order for your account accessed with the iPhone's Mail client to have access to the junk mail filter and the rules with the Mail.app on your PowerBook by proxy, you need to leave the Mail.app on your PowerBook launched and running actively accessing the account for new messages while the Mail client on your iPhone is doing the same.
If you receive that much junk mail with this account, more than likely you have inadvertently added to the problem. Do you have display remote images in HTML messages selected with the Mail.app on your Mac? If so, when a junk message that is not marked as junk when received includes images that must be rendered from a remote server to be viewed and any images are rendered, this confirms to the spammer that your email address is "known good" causing even more spam to be received. Selecting any links included with a junk message will do the same. Selecting a "remove me" link to remove your email address from the spammer's circulation list also does the same.
Providing your email address publicly for any reason - when making an online purchase, for website access is required, provided when filling out customer information, etc., etc., can cause more spam to be received.
My primary personal email address is used to exchange email with family and friends only. I never provide this email address publicly for any reason.
I use a free account with webmail access only for an online purchase and/or to be provided publicly.

  • Mail & notes. POP, IMAP?

I use POP for Mail on my MacBook Pro. I want to be able to delete emails from my phone without deleting them from the server, so I use POP on my iPhone 5S, too.
After I finished setting up my email accounts, I noticed that after each account name, Settings says "Mail," rather than "Mail, Notes."
Will my Notes sync across devices with POP email setups?

Yes, I am doing just that, but earlier when I would press START, it would give me the menu seen in the image above.
    1] OVI by Nokia
    2] Yahoo!
    3] Gmail
    4] Hotmail
    .... etc.
    Now I get only
    1] Mail for Exchange
    2] POP / IMAP
    3] Lotus notes Traveler
No Yahoo, Gmail, options. So even if I fill the username and password, I can't download the mails.

  • HT4864 Is there any way to use POP mail with iCloud?

Hi newbie here, so be kind!  Just trying to set up iCloud on my new iPad, my iPhone 3G and my oldish Windows PC running Vista.  I have managed to get the iPad and iPhone running relatively well, but the real reason I wanted to synch all my devices was because I am buried beneath all the emails that I receive each day and cleaning them off three devices was a real hassle (1st world prob I know).  My PC is running Windows mail because I couldn't get Yahoo mail to run on POP or IMAP settings. So I have been happily downloading Yahoo mail (via) POP into Windows mail for a few years now.  However I have hit an Apple Support doc saying that I cannot use POP settings in iCloud (if you know what I mean), I have to use IMAP.  Can anyone help me with what settings I need to put in Windows Mail to make it sync with the mail client on my phone and iPad?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Gmail and all POP systems are not iCloud mail. iCloud mail ends with @mac, @me or @icloud.com, Gmail and POP systems are not handled by iCloud mail systems.

  • Using POP not iMap for Gmail in Lion

I set up Gmail using iMAP and I find it utterly unusable. It's trying to download all 100,000 messages onto my new MacBook Air. NO!!!!
I want to use POP—as i have on all my other machines—to access my Gmail, but I can't seem to get the new version of Mail to cooperate.
Can anyone please step me through how to set up POP access to Gmail? Just changing imap.google.com to pop.google.com does not work. If I try to create a new account, the moment I enter gmail.com it automatically set up as IMAP.
    So frustrating!

    THANK YOU BARNEY
Words almost fail me regarding why this option is not only hidden from view, is not explained in the help text accessed from the '?' button, and needs secret knowledge to get to (or did I miss something basic somewhere?) but thank gawd I found your answer, albeit after an exasperating significant amount of wasted time...

  • Using POP Mail With Two Macs?

Is it possible to use two Macs with Apple Mail? I use Mail on my iMac, and I would like to set it up on my PowerBook as well. The only problem is accessing the same mail on both computers. It seems like if I were to open a message, it would store it on the respective computer that I open it with, and I would not be able to access it with the other. Is it possible to set it up where I can see the same messages on both? I use GMail. Thanks.

Like Kappy said, it's a hassle if you are using pop mail. But no problem with imap because the "master" copy is always maintained on the imap server, and your two computers are, essentially, nothing more than mirror sites.
I don't know if GMail is pop or imap.
What you would have to do for a pop account is set up account prefs to leave message on server after downloading on at least one of the computers, if not both of them. If you do that with both, I expect you will be hearing from your pop provider real soon about excessive disk space use. If you only do it to one computer, make sure that it is the one you will always be downloading mail from first. Plus, I can't remember whether that would cause multiple copies to download or not, on subsequent mail checks, when mail is left on server; it has been so long since I have had to play that game with pop servers.
Again, imap is no problem, because imap was designed to address this very problem.

  • IMAP & POP E-Mail on two devices?

I have a quick question, mostly for those who understand the inner-workings of the two systems fairly well. I am using IMAP on my laptop to connect with my personal E-mail account. I am also using it on my iPhone, but you can't sync subfolders in IMAP on the iPhone without navigating to each individual folder.
If I am still using IMAP from my Mail.app, and I have server-side rules set up on my E-Mail server to route mail to the appropriate folders, when I use POP, will I only get the E-mails that are remaining in the Inbox, or everything that has arrived, regardless of what folders it has been placed in using the server rules?
Part of my problem is I have a ton of mail that is not critical to be read constantly. However, some I do want to read on my iPhone when I am remote. So I was hoping to be able to use server rules to filter E-Mail to the appropriate folder, and use POP on the iPhone (with the setting set to never delete from the server) to get everything else.
Will this work, or am I going to still get everything that has been sent, regardless of the IMAP rules on the server?
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • MobileMe and Using POP mail access

    Hi guys and girls
I currently use .Mac with Mail and have set up Mail to access .Mac email using the POP.
I assume that MobileMe and it's push eMail feature is based on IMAP but it doesn't actually state what settings we need to use.
Does anyone know? Should I set up my Mail.app to use the IMAP in readiness for MobileMe?
Any help or guidance you can give would be greatly appreciated!

Why can't I set up POP/IMAP emails for my Muse website in Business Catalyst? I don't have the option 'use this service for email as well as hosting the website' under Advanced options.
Is this due to my Hosting Plan? Appreciate any answers.

Your site is a CCM site which is on a WebBasics plan (This plan does not provide hosted emails on Business Catalyst).
If you want to create email addresses on this site, you would need to setup your email server elsewhere and configure the MX records on your site to point to that external mail server.
If you want to use Business Catalyst's hosted email services you would need to use a WebBasics+ or higher siteplan. To upgrade your CCM free site, Access your site's admin area  -> Site Management -> Upgrade Now -> choose the desired site plan and billing frequency -> Add personal and credit card details -> Submit.
Please refer this article about setting up email accounts on your BC site: http://docs.businesscatalyst.com/user-manual#!/site-settings/email-users
For setting up records to point to external mail server, check out http://docs.businesscatalyst.com/user-manual#!/site-settings/email-users/creating-inboxes- for-your-users

  • Mail not working on older Macs using POP

Something happened to the POP support under Mail in the last few days. FWIW, Apple says they don’t support POP. However I have been using this to get my .mac mail up until the last 3 or 4 days.
Now, if you are using a pre Snow Leopard machine (my old G4) you don’t have iCloud. In this case setting up a new IMAP account is the way to now get mail.
Apple support was sympathetic but couldn’t help.
Steps that worked for me. (Obviously, I have an iCloud account already.)
    1- open Mail preferences.
2- click “+” to make a new account
3- put in name for the account, mac address and password.
4- UNCHECK the set up account automatically.
    5- click Continue
    6- change type to IMAP
    7- use any description
    8- mail server is imap.mail.me.com
9- add user name (NAME) and password
10- on the next pane make sure outgoing server is smtp.mac.com:NAME
11- at this point should have account pretty much created.
12- move all your old messages to this account and delete the old .mac account.
13- check in the preferences/accounts/advanced that “enable this account”, “include…” , “compact…” are all checked.
14- If you want to keep copies on your computer (as you have been doing under POP) select the “all messages and their attachments.”
    15- IMAP path = empty
    16- Port = 993, use SSL ,  is checked
    17- Authentication = “password”
    18- Use IDLE is checked
Worked for me on a G4 running Leopard

    Hi Roger,
For better or worse...and it is mostly worse, lately...I run a variety of systems on a variety of machines. It used to be .mac worked to tie all the machines together, but that has all but gone away. And I am sympathetic to Apple about not trying to support my semi-ancient hardware with their newer technologies, but it makes the transition harder when features just stop working. I can plan for June when various MobileMe features go away, and I was aware that Leopard wouldn't support Classic and Lion wouldn't support Rosetta. I wasn't counting on .mac's POP support going away, yesterday.
Unfortunately, Mail.app is not the venerable email client I have been using all these years. I tried setting Mail.app up yesterday on a machine running Tiger and was unsuccessful. I think with both Marhk and your posts I should be able to get it running, now.
    Thanks!
    -Tom

  • After HD crash and reload of both Gmail and Thunderbird using POP mail as before now, randomly some messages on the Gmail server do not move to Thunderbird.

I think it's all said above. Always have used POP mail for moving my Gmail to Thunderbird and it worked flawlessly. Now seemingly random emails rec'd into Gmail server do not move to Thunderbird. Most do, some don't and it seems so random.
I've checked every setting I know of and matched it exactly to the setup I have on another computer set up with the same POP mail/thunderbird setup, which continues to work flawlessly.
Any explanation other than switching to IMAP which I do NOT want to do?
    Win7 64, Dell XPS 15Z laptop
    Thanks is advance.
    -Neil

I think I found the solution christ1. I found some help using Thunderbird's Help function and I think the problem was the Google user name I entered while creating the account in Thunderbird. Somehow the user name I entered was just the first part of my Google email address without the @gmail.com. After adding that the problem ceased to occur. I have no idea how/why, but since I did it there has been no more problem. Thanks for your reply.
