Using powerbook install disk on g5

I just bought a new powerbook that came with the latest version of TIger. I'd now like to install tiger on my G5 desktop as well... Can I use the same disk or do I have to purchase a different upgrade package for my G5? Right now the G5 is running 10.3.9

Hi Benny;
I am afraid that I am unable to answer your question about ISync with any certainty because I haven't used it that way. I would think that you can. Hopefully someone a bit more knowlegable will ccoma along here soon.

  • Can I use the install disk on two computers?

I haven't actually installed it on my computer yet, I just allowed whatever was going to install itself to come up. If I have another computer, can I use the install disk to put OSX on there or not? If so, can I still use it in case I need a backup load of my computer?

Only if you get a family pack license newer than the installer disk which came with the computer(s) can you install it on multiple computers. Check your license agreement.
You can't use the disks which came with another computer on a second computer. These articles explain more along those lines:

As for backup, I recommend looking at these various procedures:

  • I think my hard drive crashed. How can I get data off via firewire before the HD completely goes? I was stuck on the BSoD and now I can't even use the install disk. Utility Disk said HD was okay. Please HELP ME

    Safe mode did nothing.
Safe mode with verbose seemed to make it worse.
Before continuously trying new things, I could use the install disk to check the disk utility and clear
the hard drive from there but now the screen won't even load to that.
I really need the data on the hard drive especially if it can't be salvaged.
    How can i transfer files?
Am I better off physically taking my HD out or will it damage itself without
    leaving the system.
    I tried command r
    resetting the pram
    safe mode
    jumping out a window
    nothing has helped.
I am stuck on the blue screen of death and it flickers.

No. In order to use FireWire Target Disk Mode you need to use a FireWire equipped Mac. Other than that the only other way I can think of to even attempt to access you files would be to remove your hard drive and install it in a case and connect it to another computer.

  • I am using OS X and am trying to set up a HP ENVY 5660 e printer and the drivers are not listed.  I read somewhere not to use the install disk.  What do I do?

I am using OS X and am trying to set up a HP ENVY 5660 e printer and the drivers are not listed.  I read somewhere not to use the install disk.  What do I do?

Your suggestion was a good one and what I found was that to use this and any other printer I looked at is that I need to update the operating system to a later version.  I have been reluctant in the past to do this after reading update horror stories and since this computer does what I need and very well.  Was glad I moved over from windows and this is the first problem I have had.  Thanks for your help and any other suggestions you may have.

  • Can I use new install disks for older computer?

I have a new MBP (which I'm very excited about!). I am going to pass my two-year old MBP to one of my college kids. I would like to wipe it clean as he will be transferring all of his own info onto it from his current MBP (which will then be passed down to another college kid). I can't find the original install disk. Can I use the ones that came with the new machine?

No. The install disks are specific to the model they ship with.
I've read that a Retail copy of Snow Leopard will allow you to essentially do a 'fresh' install of the OS, but it does not include the diagnostics and configuration features of your original system disks.
You can call Apple and order a replacement set of disks for a nominal charge (around $40, I think I've read.) Since you're keeping it in the family, that would be an important thing to have with the Mac in case you cannot locate the originals.

  • How to use Leopard Install disk as bootup disk?

I have not tried this, but exactly how is the original Leopard Install disk used as a bootup disk? Is there a way to exactly duplicate this disk in case the original becomes unusable?
    Thanks

To duplicate the disc you will need a dual-layer DVD-R and a Mac with a DL burner (check System Profile to assure you have a compatible optical drive.)
    Duplicate a CD or DVD
    1. Insert the DVD/CD;
    2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
    3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
    4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;
    5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
    6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.
It is also possible to create a bootable partition on an external drive that functions exactly as the DVD. You need an external drive partitioned using the GUID partition scheme and formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) You would then clone the DVD to the partition on the external drive as follows:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the external volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the external volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive and wait for it to mount on the Desktop.
    7. Select the OS X Installer DVD from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    8. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

  • Using iBook install disks with Titanium

    Greetings,
The hard drive on my Titanium died and I'm replacing it. I can't find my set of install disks. Can I use a set for an iBook. They are early 10.2. After I got the OS installed, I planned to use my Tiger update and download the various updates. Will this work. If not, are there other suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Steve
    Dual Processor G4 & G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hello Steve.
Generally, the install package that ships with a Mac purchase is model and build specific and cannot be used on a different Mac model. You can try and if successful, it may not work correctly.
When you say use a Tiger update, do you have a Tiger retail install package? If so, you can use the Tiger retail install package to install Tiger on the TiBook but it won't include all software that shipped with the TiBook.
If you have a Tiger retail install package (non-family pack) that is currently installed and being used on another Mac, technically using this install package on your TiBook is a violation of the single use license agreement so something to keep in mind.

  • Can I use Dell install disk containing Windows for Bootcamp & Mac?

The only Windows disk I have is what came on the Dell install disk with the Dell PC. Can I use this copy of Windows after I perform the BootCamp division? I have one small prgm (PC only) and need to figure out a cost effective way. Can I mess up BootCamp or the division easily? I've been warned that it can be tricky dividing up the hard drive. Is this true?

    Hi Donna,
for PC-to-Mac switcher Apple provides a great tutorial with Switch101 http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/ and of course Mac101 http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/
I used both when I made the switch myself 3 years ago.
Microsoft has a so-called runtime version of Access, which can be used if the complete Access program is not needed to run a Database file.
Seems like the program you use comes with this runtime file, so you don't have to use/buy Office.
Since VirtualBox is an OSX application and the installation of Windows is done inside VirtualBox, your OSX system/computer is in no danger, when you try it.
But with all Windows computer, you might consider using a Anti-Virus program when running Windows, regardless whether you use the Internet with Windows or not.
Just the fact that you are im-/export files from/to Windows computer can be harmful, if these files are infected.
    AVG has a good freeware AV-Scanner http://www.avg.de/us.product-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
    Take care

  • Using Windows Install Disk

This is probably a stupid question, but I have not used a PC in a while.. Can I use the same install disk as the one my wife used on her PC? Or not because of the serial encryption...any help would be appreciated. I just don't want to shell out $200 for an OS.

    EDIT:
Below the wrong reply I was composing, before I learned the news (thanks Red Dwarf)
and after I recovered from syncope...
    Sorry for the confusion.
    Hi jgraphix,
Windows and Mac OS are completely different operating systems, that cannot be installed on the same machines.
There is no way you could achieve such installation.
I don't understand why you would do that?
If you need to reinstall Mac OS X, which is a better OS anyway, just use the install DVD that came with your computer?

  • Use same install disk on two computers? (have 2 legal copies)

Here's the thing: I have a MacBook Pro that came with Leopard and I also have another copy. I used the other copy (not the grey disks that came with the MBP) to re-install the OS on the MacBook. I have a Mac Mini on which I want to install Leopard. Can I use the same disk I used to re-install on the MacBook to install Leopard on the Mini? I'm planning on selling the Mini and I don't someone to get in trouble.
Another question: Since the Mini only has 512MB RAM, would it be better to install Tiger?

If you are selling the Mini with OS X installed, be sure to include the OS X install discs with it. Remember that the SLA forbids you from transferring the software license to another user unless you include the install disc(s).
I recommend reinstalling Tiger on the Mini (if that is what came with it) and include the Tiger install discs with the sale. If you want to sell Leopard too you can try to upsell the buyer on it, or sell it separately to someone else.

  • I have a mac pro 2007 model. It appears I have a corrupted sector on my the hadrive tha has my operating system. If I use the install disk that came with is (Tiger) can I still get my lion back.

I have mac pro 2007 model given to me, I updated it to lion about six months ago, and I do not have a time machine.
Lion stopped loading before I get to the login screen,
I tried all the tips, doing a option/shift/v. I noticed several fsk_dsk errors that it could not fix on my boot drive.
Restore would not work either. The only physical copy I have is the install disk that came with the mac. I think it is Tiger.
If I put this operating system on will I be abel to upgrade it to lion, and if so will I have to pay again?

The Lion Recovery Partition has its own index. Your Macintosh HD partition is the one with the troubles.
If Disk Utility cannot fix it, you may need to apply different Utilities, such as Disk Warrior.
Some readers suggest that the best disk repair is to erase the drive and restore it from your Backups.
This might be a good time to consider getting a new drive to have on hand. This would allow you flexibility in copying, fixing, and (if needed) replacing the drive with the problems.

  • Upgrading From Final Cut Pro 5 to 6 - can you use full install disk?

    Hi,
I have one MacBook Pro running Final Cut 6 (with Final Cut Studio 2), and another one running Final Cut Pro 5 (with Final Cut Studio). We're looking to upgrade the second one to Final Cut Studio 2.
Does anyone know if the upgrade can be done with the disks from the full install box of Studio 2, using the product key from an upgrade? We happen to be in the middle of East Africa at the moment, so shipping is an issue...
    Thanks

You CAN install Final Cut Studio with only the upgrade disk set BUT you will need the product key for BOTH the Final Cut Studio 2 AND the previous version.
After you insert the Final Cut Studio 2 upgrade installation disk you will first be asked to input the product key for the upgrade version and then after you will be requested for the product key of the previous version.
After this, the installation process does NOT require any disks from the previous version of Final Cut Studio.

  • Lightroom 5 upgrade, using full install disk - will it properly upgrade version 4?

Just want to make sure that I won't lose settings, catalog, presets, or anything else if I upgrade using the full version DVD (not an upgrade disk). Thanks!

The program on the disk is exactly the same program as the upgrade. It's just licensing differences. If you install from the disk, the first thing you will be prompted to do after the installation is complete will be to update to version 5.3. You would do just as well to download and install the trial version which is presently 5.3, and then just activate it with the serial number in the box.
The first time you run Lightroom 5 it will find your previous catalog and give you the option to upgrade it. You want to choose that option, and then Lightroom will create a new copy of that catalog that will include all of your images, all of the adjustments and all of the presets that you have already created. Your previous version will be left completely intact and usable as it has been in the past.

  • Missing powerbook install disks

I bought myself a G4 powerbook in november and now I want to partition my hard drive and reinstall Tiger, so I went looking for the box which still had the software and manuals in it.
I didn't even notice that the box wasn't in the bedroom until a few days later and even then I stupidly assumed that she had beat me to it and put it away in a cupboard or even the loft for safe keeping.
How wrong was I, my wife who was doing some housework thought that the box was empty and therefore was to be thrown out..... so in the bin it went.
Thank god that my applecare box was already in my desk drawer and not in the powerbook box
What I would like to know is how to go about getting replacement disks, I really dont want to have to buy a retail OS X disk as it (as far as I know) doesnt have some of the bundled software that came with the original software disks.
Many thanks in advance for any help or advice offered.
    15inch Powerbook G4 1.67ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

You will need to contact AppleCare about replacing the software restore discs. I believe they will do so for just the media and shipping charges.
